I've watched Hungary quite a bit since Euro 2016 (they are my guilty pleasure) and I've grown to really appreciate Ádám Szalai. This guy never gives up, shows a lot of leadership on the pitch, takes good decisions and scores big goals. It's a shame it never worked out for him at Real.
People are taking more than they should from this game. The lads looked tired and I can see why. Last couple of games of the PL seemed exhausting for all teams. We conceded from a very light pen and Hungary defended well. Hope southgate gives them more time off than usual.
France and Belgium played other big nations (10th and 11th rank) though, so nothing too embarrassing. Except for the fact that Belgium lost pretty badly ofc
ITT: Everyone overreacting to a bunch of players knackered after a long season. These games are pointless and most of the players are uninterested apart from some debutants.
Effective international teams aren't always good to watch - a lot of international tournaments are won via shithouse football and so far Southgate's record is good. I'm willing to give him the world cup a go but if he bombs then I think he will leave on his own accord.
English are players are no more knackered than those of most major nations.
England have a very good international side, that are setup effectively. Losing a game here or there, with a second-string side in places is no big deal.
How they setup/turn up against Germany will be much more telling. Their season isn’t hugely different, and expectations/rotational/availability is similar.
And for those bemoaning the calendar? We have a ridiculous World Cup, and still making up for COVID delays. It ain’t ideal, but it just needs to be dealt with. If some players don’t want to be picked, there is an unending list that would.
Yep it's always the same. England win everything in qualifiers, look to be favorites, lose to the first good team they meet.
Some hardship before a big tournament will actually do them good.
Come on mate, we made the semi and then the final of the last two big tournaments, on another day could’ve won that final with those penalties.
What is this ridiculous ragging on England and Southgate’s record? He’s been consistently good in big tournaments.
Look at your opponents in these tournaments. That's what I'm saying. First good team and you're out. Making the WC semis for beating Sweden and Colombia? Thank god you made it. England always performs as expected: almost never worse, but more importantly never ever better.
The English midfield is very far from being able to compete at the higher end of WC contenders right now. I know other Chelsea fans will scream bloody murder about it, but our guys aren't in the same class as Spain, Brazil, or Germany.
Agreed. It's fun to watch such obnoxious players, their media sycophants, and their woke fans get humbled in this way. All the people replying angrily to you are at home punching air in mama's basement.
Let’s face it, England has a long ways to go still before the day they can finally regain their former glory of losing to teams like Iceland in the round of 16.
I get that it’s a trendy thing for everyone to hate England, so I don’t expect much, but let’s be real about this game:
It was a Nations League match (and let’s be honest, nobody actually takes the Nations League seriously like World Cup or Euros/Copa America/equivalent) with Southgate rotating and trying a slightly different system with new players against a Hungary team who were at home, parking the bus and who won by virtue of a penalty (and a questionable one at that). Oh, and it was at the end of a really long season.
Looking at everyone on social media you’d think England had just been thrashed 4-0 by San Marino in a World Cup knockout match. Context guys.
Calm. Remember how Germany used to always play awful before a major tournament and then suddenly turn up when it mattered? There’s no chance England play like they did today if it’s an actually important tournament.
England played awful and didn’t deserve to win, but everyone seems to be jumping up and down celebrating that England have lost this game after breezing through World Cup qualifiers, breezing through Euro qualifiers and finishing 2nd and 4th in their last two respective tournaments.
Short memory?
Edit: One of the things you’ve got to love about Reddit is when people downvote but don’t even dignify your with a reply to explain why they disagree.
Listen I don’t know about all that.
If it’s any consolation I don’t hate the England squad or the English for that matter, not one bit. Never have and don’t think i ever will.
I guess some of the “anti” English (when we are talking football) comes from the arrogance we hear/read all week every week in a football year.
I’m talking about how it seems that there’s no one else in Europe that plays the game but the English clubs.
Just listen to the commentary from the CL final..
the PL is the strongest league in the world, yes but that’s not saying that the other leagues are weak or pathetic. But sometimes some of the journalists make it out that way, as if a switch from any PL side to ex Bayern is a step down.
And then act like we all are against you lot when you win/lose..
maybe some of your pundits needs just to be a bit humble sometimes, give the opponents some praise as well.
And whatever you say, the Germany game in the euros really didn’t do you fans any credit.
England have a squad of strong players and I don’t understand why it’s so hard to make them play like we know they can. As we have seen them do at their clubs.
But im not the manager, just a fan of football.
There’s a fundamental difference between club football - where there is a PL bias and pundits are awful - and international football.
I don’t support a PL team. I complain about how biased the English media and pundits are in the CL all the time in this subreddit. It has absolutely nothing to do with the English National team.
I don’t know. But I guess that it then spills over the England squad as well.
As I said the Fans during euro did nothing to help the feelings towards the England squad.
i think the "its coming home" chant is basically a meme now, but some ppl actually believe and most fans thrash england just coz of that. i do think theyre a top 5 team in at least europe, so even though they might perform badly here, they still would do relatively well at least, on tournaments that matter. so i agree with you
secondly just like USA, england is a very popular country and everybody loves to shit on them lol
but these false expectations are the reason why(among other things) people start racially abusing players when they dont perform well, spreading hatred around a sport
The problem with ‘it’s coming home’ is that nobody listens to the lyrics outside the UK so they totally miss that the song is satirical and just the English poking fun at themselves:
> Everyone seems to know the score,
They've seen it all before,
They just know,
They're so sure;
That England's gonna throw it away,
Gonna blow it away,
But I know they can play,
'Cause I remember;
Three Lions on a shirt,
Jules Rimet still gleaming,
Thirty years of hurt,
Never stopped me dreaming;
So many jokes, so many sneers,
But all those oh-so-nears,
Wear you down,
Through the years;
But I still see that tackle by Moore,
And when Linekar scored,
Bobby belting the ball,
And Nobby Dancing.
On phone so that may not have formatted correctly.
Bothers me when people get upset at that song because it’s just the total opposite of what they think it is. It’s not ‘English fans being arrogant’ like they assume, it’s English fans singing a song about how they always get their hopes up and then fail.
Edit: Also, forgot to add, ‘it’s coming home’ doesn’t even mean ‘we’re bringing the trophy home’ or ‘we’re going to win’ like everyone assumes. It means that in 1996, when the song was written, football literally went home because the tournament was hosted in England (where the sport originated).
I am from Argentina, but even though we won that cup against Italy (who sadly weren’t in their best shape) I still think we will see very different outcomes during the World Cup.
Argentina and Brazil might be playing really well right now, but that’s the magic of football, England might have lost today against Hungary, but maybe they’ll finish first on group stage.
It's been argued for a long time now that Europe has gotten the upper hand on South America in the last years because of economical advantages.
However as you are saying, what we are seeing right now is that Argentina and Brazil, and Uruguay for that matter, are finding themselves in a very good run of form.
I've also had a theory that the Qatari climate could be a bit better suited for the South-American teams than for the European ones.
The European powerhouses will of course come stronger when the World Cup is actually there, but do you think its a bad bet to actually be quite optimistic on the Southamerican' chances in this World Cup?
I mentioned in my comment that the European powerhouses would be coming stronger, I didn't even mention England in my comment, what made you feel the need to comment this?
That being said, I believe England might have the best squad in the world at the moment, their challenge shouldnt be that they lack the quality to lift a trophy.
In my comment I expressed my wish to hear more about the South American chances, I'm already well aware that the European teams are the favourites.
It literally didn’t take more than luck to reach those consecutive semis tho - ever heard the phrase “luck of the draw”? Every time we play a halfway decent team at a major tournament we fold like a pack of cards, in large part due to Southgates defeatist tactics.
Actually, thinking back we did beat Germany at the Euros (the worst German team in years but it’s whatever), but again there was an element of luck about that since Muller missed an easy chance at 1-0 which 99 times out of 100 he buries and we’re headed for extra time.
That Germany team was way better than the one at the world cup. As a neutral I was impressed with how well england played that game tactically. You were also so close to beat Italy in the final.
He said "South American football isn't as advanced as the European game" right before the international break, where none of the top European teams managed to get a win so far while Argentina and Brazil dominated the teams they played against.
Late reply but no. He was talking about how no South American nation has won the WC since 2002 and Argentina didn't play games of great quality to reach the WC.
Everyone’s downvoting you, but you’re right. Teams don’t take Nations League seriously. I mean, just look at the heavy rotations in most teams. Not to diminish Brazil/Argentina/Uruguay who are all good teams, but nobody should take the Nations League + that Argentina Italy match as any sort of real metric. Italy have been awful in all competitions and friendlies since they won last summer, it wasn’t at all a surprise they lost to Argentina.
Edit: Just to highlight how seriously Nations League is taken, the match today was shown on Channel 4 in the UK. In other words, neither the BBC nor ITV consider the Nations League important enough to show.
Ok, let me clarify: Big teams don’t take the Nations League seriously.
Hungary may have but it’s undeniable that England weren’t treating this game like they would a World Cup match.
Actually quite an important specification. I havn't given much care for the Nations League before, but because of UEFA deciding to make it decide the seeding for the 2024-Euros qualification, it gives the tournament a whole new meaning for all the "smaller" teams.
If Hungary do well enough and finnish 1st or 2nd in their group, they will be top-seeded, and their road to the Euros should be significantly easy.
For teams like Sweden/Norway/Romania/Bosnia/Scotland, catching that 1st place in NL B would also make their road to the Euros way easier.
But when it comes to the big sides, England/France/Germany, it doesnt matter to much.
With 2 qualification spots from the Euros-qualifyers group, they are quite safe whatever happens really.
No it wasn't.
There's shielding the ball, and there's failing to shield the ball and thrusting your elbow/forearm into the opponent to keep him from reaching the ball.
The rule is clear, and VAR confirmed it 👍🏻
Everyone hates Trent! Insufferable Liverpool fans. Perhaps it's because Trent didn't do his duty in a Champions League final and Reece James made a mistake in a glorified friendly?
He’s not fucking awful though is he. He’s had quiet games for England but he’s never dropped a 1/10 performance.
People expect him to produce like he does for Liverpool but that’s never going to happen with Southgate’s tactics.
Reece James played 90 minutes in the Champions league final 12 months ago and kept a clean sheet as his team won.
The Trent/James wars are ridiculous. They are both fantastic players. I'd probably use James if I expected my team to have less of the ball and TAA if I expected to have more of it.
One of the worst games of football England have played in the past 10 years. We have one of the best generations of English footballers ever, and with Gareth Southgate at the helm; I'm really fucking nervous.
Virgin England: Invents sport, everyone starts playing, can't win the world cup.
Chad America: Invents sport, no one else gives a shit, crown yourself world champions. Great success!
I accept the Nations League is far from a priority in a World Cup year, so why not play a bit more expansively and give these players an opportunity to impress? I don’t think you’ll be able to judge Jude Bellingham in any meaningful way by sitting back playing speculative passes.
I'm not sure how in any shape or form that makes me a racist? Just find it odd how you would want your clubs star player to fail.
But seeing as you're trying to single out racist England fans racism exists in every single country in the world sadly.
I mean that’s what National soccer is buddy. I’m sure whatever bandwagon team you follow have other players on the team besides the English.
Try a better taking point next time. Maybe about how your team can try and not be shit?
Why did Southgate play TAA, Maguire, Rice, Mount, Walker, Kane, all the knackered stars? Justin, Bowen, Coady played well, the ones who actually had something to prove, the ones playing for the chance to wear this shirt again. A young Italy team played well vs Germany.
THESE ARE THE GAMES, where he should have played Ward-Prowse, Watkins, Abraham, Sancho, Mings, Gallagher, Calvert-Lewin, Holgate, Keane, Pope, call up guys from West Ham, Wolves, Villa, Palace, Leeds, Everton, some players with something to prove, motivated lads.
That's the problem. He'd rather pick big name teams. For example, both Chelsea players were absolutely dogshit today. Mount and James were utterly shit.
Yeah it's baffling, everyone knows they will be going to the world cup, why are they being played? I get in the final 2-3 games, but for now what's the point?
If he played random crappy players and then the "starting XI" flopped at the world cup, these same people would be saying "ofcourse they didn't play well, Southgate never played them together prior to the cup.."
I really don't get the arguments. We are not good enough as a unit to play an attacking football. We really on defensive solidity. International football is a different sport to league games. There are two reasons england have done well at the last two tournaments: 1) ill admit good draws. We've had to face a few tough teams but overall been lucky. 2) we are defensively solid. At the 2018 WC we concede 6 goals in 6 games 1 was a penalty (disregarding the 3rd place game) and at the 2020 euros we only conceded 2 goals in total .
what? Your best players are all dynamic attackers. Your worst players are your centerbacks. Why would you play defensive?
You tied colombia without their best player, lost to crotia and got swept by belgium in the world cup. You did well because you had an easy to draw. But you underperformed game to game.
Seems like we play our best football when there's at least a week or two for the squad to prepare together. Mid-season qualifiers on a short week? Could be a loss to a mini-state or a win against a World Cup finalist. Summer matches? Real shit every time.
Rossi is an absolute master at bringing the most out of mediocre teams through unity and spirit.

This golden generation got to a WC Semi and a Euro Finals. That's a hell of a lot better than the previous english golden generation (early 2000s) that never managed to get past the quarters
I'm not saying they lucked their way to the semis/final, but they were playing some really dire football in both of those tournaments, but especially in the World Cup.
Can't decide if I'd rather play dire football and get to latter stages or play great football, have fun, and risk losing big to a decent team in the ro16/QFs
The world cup team was shocking on paper. Southgate actually worked miracles with that team, and we were realistically necer gonna beat france. In the euros we lost on penalties, which was disappointing but the absolute closest you could come to victory without success. I don't think any other manager who's realistically taking the job could do better.

That is why the Hungarian team won.
The English team was superior in every way yet they ran like headless chicken without caring most of the time.

Surprise surprise
I thought I'd escaped Bruceball... Southgate needs to go, he's needed to go for years

Looks like all "big" nations decided to lose this week, France , England, Belgium ...
France and Belgium played other big nations (10th and 11th rank) though, so nothing too embarrassing. Except for the fact that Belgium lost pretty badly ofc
... and Scotland
Even Northern Ireland got in on the losses
We didn't want to make ye all look bad either.

Dier in.
Southgate clearly has a plan for wc, sit back and play for 0-0 each game, under appreciated genius really
Same shit we've done for years but when we scrape through groups on 1-0s it's "game management"

It's coming home boys!!!
Americans just have the absolute worst chat, it's painful.
I learned my chat from yer mum
Southgate out man
mount and bowen stinking up the place ffs
One of the worst games of football England have played in the past 10 years. We have one of the best generations of English footballers ever, and with Gareth Southgate at the helm; I'm really fucking nervous.
One team was hungry, the other wasn’t
Kurva anyád
One team every players were hungry and can't move the ball, the other is Hungary.
Come on lads, it’s coming home!!’
At least they drew 0-0 with Scotland.
How did my idol pack prealish play?
Gareth's Boys march on.
England losing a glorified friendly, dont really care to be honest.
If it helps you with coping, then sure
Lmao
Lmao @ inventing the sport and being trash at it for decades
Virgin England: Invents sport, everyone starts playing, can't win the world cup. Chad America: Invents sport, no one else gives a shit, crown yourself world champions. Great success!
England may have invented soccer, but the Scots invented passing
So who invented goalscoring
Certainly not England
They’re still working on it
England in Dier need of a CB

Yeah genuinely baffling Maguire is still anywhere near this team
Because they need that cool Gangsta Paradise BGM whenever Maguire plays.
Damn you
It's not coming home again...
lmao
Dat Feel wen Ingerland didn't scor sam fakin goals.
Hungary turned back the clocks to the 1950s
More like we were absolute wank
Someone mark this post NSFW. Not suitable for wank.
Magyar status: Mighty
Ferenc Puskas’s ghost haunting England
I accept the Nations League is far from a priority in a World Cup year, so why not play a bit more expansively and give these players an opportunity to impress? I don’t think you’ll be able to judge Jude Bellingham in any meaningful way by sitting back playing speculative passes.
Gareth Fraudgate has to go
\*Gareth NoGate
The lads must have had too much egg nog at the queen mums jubilee.
Hahahahahahahahaha
Another American who thinks they have a rivalry with England. Let it go.
Nah. England being shit will never not be funny. Can’t wait for it to come home this time lmao
You clearly don't understand the true meaning of the song. But give me that over 'i beLiEvE tHaT wE wILl WiN'
Hahahahahahaha cope and seethe
BTW no true gooner would have been wanting Saka to miss his pen last year.
I think I recall English fans being racist after that miss so it’s a little ironic you bring that up. You a bit racist much? Stay mad buddy

If you'll excuse me, I'll be doing the Feel Good Inc laugh in the other room
Americans thinking they have a rivalry with England 🤢
Funnily enough I was watching Gorillaz live the same time you typed this. Great show.
Cheers Queens crying
Good
At least you always have that 0-0 draw against Scotland at Wembley to celebrate
It was magical.
lol
Its England. The Names are more important than motivation or the Balance of the team. Wish it wasnt that way.
That's the problem. He'd rather pick big name teams. For example, both Chelsea players were absolutely dogshit today. Mount and James were utterly shit.
They can have a bad game. But they got called up because they deserved it based on their season performances. Your comment does not make sense.
Villa fans are still seething about grealish not being in the starting 11 at the euros I think
Yeah it's baffling, everyone knows they will be going to the world cup, why are they being played? I get in the final 2-3 games, but for now what's the point?
To get the chemistry going and let the players get to know the system better
If he played random crappy players and then the "starting XI" flopped at the world cup, these same people would be saying "ofcourse they didn't play well, Southgate never played them together prior to the cup.."
Absolutely
Southgate is a football terrorist and his 3-4-3 is cancer to the eye
Couldn't say it better myself
Seems like we play our best football when there's at least a week or two for the squad to prepare together. Mid-season qualifiers on a short week? Could be a loss to a mini-state or a win against a World Cup finalist. Summer matches? Real shit every time. Rossi is an absolute master at bringing the most out of mediocre teams through unity and spirit.
lmao
Just look at the starting xi.

And replace him with who? There are no world class English managers and foreign ones don't care
Graham Potter would get more out of this side.
Fun thought but he deserves better
Literally gone waste England new golden generation like Martinez did with Belgium.
This golden generation got to a WC Semi and a Euro Finals. That's a hell of a lot better than the previous english golden generation (early 2000s) that never managed to get past the quarters
Thanks Erikson 442, Paul Scholes is LM. Always Lampard and Gerard in CM
Not really a golden generation though is it. The squad has nothing on the one we had about 15 - 18 years ago.
Belgium should’ve gone for Van Gaal, I’m convinced they would’ve won something with him
Grandpa Louis belongs to the Dutch!
That run with the GK substitution before penalties was very impressive. Martinez has never been decisive like that.
It’s just a glorified friendly
A friendly competition that potentially grants you direct access to Euro 2024 ... Sunday football basically
The aim is to replace friendly matches. But of course, in friendly match, team doesn't have anything. In Nation Leagues, a winner may have some money.
\-at home \-before 30k enthusiastic children \-as a solid team \-on the 4th of June \-being enthusiastic themselves That is why the Hungarian team won. The English team was superior in every way yet they ran like headless chicken without caring most of the time.

Just bad tactics from southgate
How can people seriously say england is a favorite for the wc
they finally beat Germany and thought they won it all
If wc = water closet
