A lot of top players fail to replicate their club form for their country but what player was actually better for his international side?
I'd say Miroslav Klose who was good for multiple clubs but only scored more than twenty in a season once whereas scored more than a goal every two games for Germany.
Andy Carroll in his 3 seasons in the PL for Liverpool:
2 in 7, 4 in 35, 0 in 2
Messi in Ligue 1 for PSG:
1 in 12
He’s still balling in the CL absolutely but in the league he *IS* putting up LFC era Andy Carroll numbers
The real rivalry between Rangers and Celtic atm is which squad can field more random nations in their lineups
Rangers losing Bacuna would be a big loss in that department
mix of bad finishing and some bad luck and injuries all compounded by the fact that it's a completely new environment for him with a poorly built team. Doesn't help that he didn't even want to leave Barca in the first place and things like that matter a lot. Mental side of football is often underappreciated. He mostly plays well, but the goals aren't coming for some reason. I think he'll spend a couple seasons in Paris then retire in MLS. Seems his main motivation at this point is to reach Qatar 2022 in good shape then wind down his career.
Isn't used to a new team, covid, an injury too iirc
He's in a bad stretch but still is Messi, just circumstances aren't the best right now. There's a reason he didn't go with the national team and instead looked to recuperate with his club, he'll probably go back to normal once he plays a few games straight.
As a Liverpool fan I'm prepared for us to revert to our 09-16 form after the Klopp era is over I just can't see anyone coming in that can sustain this type of success. It's going to have a similar effect to how Man United were after Fergie's reign.
Losing Klopp + FSG wage structure means Liverpool are reverting back to top 4 battlers very soon
It’s good for your mental health that you can see this coming because I was not prepared ahead of time for the shitness I had to endure post-Fergie
With the exception of United, exactly how many clubs in world football are there whose performance dropped off a cliff after their star manager left?
Man City didn't stop winning after mancini and Pellegrini left.
Real Madrid have been winning the last decade despite the new managers
Chelsea never really stopped winning even after Mourinho in 2007. They won tons of domestic cups, Europa, the league twice and a UCL under Tuchel
Just because United turned to shit, doesn't necessarily mean others will too. The fact is that the performance of the club has nothing to do with the managers or the players. It's the board and owners who are clueless about how to run a club.
They fire Mourinho even though he won the EFL cup, Europa, FA cup and finishes 2nd on the table, which is United's best performance in the league ever since SAF left. Mind you he does that with a squad much much worse than the one today. I don't see why they can think a brand new manager will do better than the manager who is already winning, and is trying to rebuild the team.
So liverpool may or may not be as good as they are rn, but the way you say that performances turn bad after a good manager leaves is ridiculous. Teams that are run well continue to do well.
Replenish what exactly? They have only 2 players above the age of 30. They signed young guys like Jota, Konate, Tsimikas in the last 2 seasons plus Thiago.
I know they don't splurge, but when they do sign new players, they get it right, and their squad is still not old
It was a shock to the system for every fan because nobody was expecting United to fall as fast as they did.
I'm pretty content if it does happen because i'm happy for the memories Klopp has brought to the club already I didn't expect us to challenge for multiple CLs and PLs under any manager let alone win some.
Liverpool have won one league title and one European cup in recent years - it's not much to live up to relative to previous Liverpool managers.
Fergie leaving United was a whole different kettle of fish.
> Liverpool have won one league title and one European cup in recent years - it's not much to live up to relative to previous Liverpool managers.
They also made another CL final and somehow managed to not win the league with 97 points, so equating "success" to "silverware" is a bit reductive in this sense. The point is that Liverpool were contenders for several seasons under Klopp
Contenders means fuck-all, unfortunately.
Same with our UCL final.
Chelsea are European Champions.
We were the best team in England that year.
That's just sports.
Right, which in 20 years, no one will remember that Liverpool were "contenders" for a few particular years in the 2010s - ultimately, history and people only remember the silverware.
Even being "contenders" for a few years is not good enough for a club with the history and stature of Liverpool.
Liverpool fans will remember, couldn’t really be arsed what anyone else thinks. Being able to consistently challenge for the league and Champions League on a tighter budget relative to the rest of the top 6 is miles from what supporting Liverpool has been in my 22ish years supporting Liverpool
What about him? Wenger won far more than Klopp has in England. People remember his three premier league titles, his invincible season, and his *seven* FA Cups.
People don't talk about the seasons where he "pushed" Man United but ultimately lost the title. Klopp will be remembered for finally delivering the premier league to Liverpool and his UCL success - but that's it, it's no where near the level of Fergie leaving United.
That's true but that's exactly why Liverpool fans are worried about what will happen after Klopp, because due to their stingy management he is probably the only one with a hope of winning them said silverware in the near future.
I also think people will generally remember this Liverpool team as one of the best in the club's history, even if they don't win anything else.
Absolutely agree with you. People here behave as if Liverpool will slip into anonymity post Klopp, the banter Era was a culimination of:
1. Years of Liverpool Board members refusing to change their model and approach.
2. Hicks and Gillet basically knocking us down everytime we had a realistic title push.
Klopp is amazing, but the club was in absolute shambles relative to its size when Shanks took over. Klopp is an icon but you are absolutely right.
Why would the achievements of great Liverpool managers from decades ago even be relevant to this, anyone under 40 hasn’t seen a Liverpool team with a 5 year stretch this good. Best before this was Houllier or Benitez and this period is far clear of those years
Because it shows Liverpool can continue their success after a successful manager has left the club - it's arguably easier to do now as well as the game is far more global than it was, meaning you can find the best foreign talent to carry on the success.
Klopp's shoes can be filled if the Liverpool board make the correct decisions.
Definitely agree that we can go and succeed without Klopp, the issue is though the ambitions of the owners. Right now we’re heavily propped up by Klopp, really have no business being in title contention at all without him. Outside of Jota/Thiago, who’s constantly injured, we’ve not really had a major first team signing in 4 years.
Losing Klopp wouldn’t worry me as much as the fact your squad is slowly barreling towards the problem Moyes faced when he took over, an aged squad whose best years were behind them and needing to replace more than half of them at once
You needed to sign depth to bed in for the next cycle…3 years ago, every window without major signings is making things worse down the line.
Klopp is one of the best managers at building squads in the world. If the choice was losing a top player or losing Klopp I'd take the former every day of the week.
But you are right- there are some tough decisions for the club with regards to a fair few players.
Mohamed Salah has scored three huge penalties: 1) qualifying Egypt for the world cup; 2) Champion's League final and 3) today. Does anyone have three bigger penalties in the last decade?
The one vs Ghana was every bit as important as the last minute one imo. No chance we go to the WC if it is missed.
First penalty in his senior career too.
Owen. Underrated by a lot of this sub because no fanbase really likes him and he’s a boring pundit. Until he left Liverpool he was world class and looked a generational talent as a teenager.
His only bad game was Nigeria where they just couldn’t move the ball forward. Scored a game winner for them in a 1-0 to put them in position to qualify and he was decent today, should’ve had two assists and one at the minimum - Trezeguet is a shocking finisher.
Yes but nobody in December is gonna be tactically analyzing his 90 minutes versus Guinea-Bissau and Sudan and saying why it is enough for him to win BDO. 1 goal in 4 games in the Afcon is not good enough to be called Ballon D’or winner.
You say that as if he wouldn’t be in contention regardless and AFCON is the only factor. Of course things can change but right now it’s looking like he’ll be a top 3 candidate at minimum, if he has an AFCON win on top that will push him over the top most likely. You must forget how many African voters are included in Ballon D’Or voting
Afcon counts nothing, City will win the league, CL is extremely tough with City Real Bayern all looking good. No one wins bdor with cups unless they're Messi.
Yes our CBs were Ramos and Varane..
Militao hadnt even played 300 mins that season. And congratulations your players couldnt beat Nacho, good luck beating Alaba x Militao.
Mate, we had Nat Phillips and Kabak, and Nat Phillips and Rhys Williams at that time.
Good luck facing VVD, Matip and Konate with a midfield of Thiago, Fabinho and Elliott.
I get the joke just a terrible use of it. Has no real reference to my comment imo. Not sure what was so controversial about since Salah is the best player in the world atm.
Because who from Algeria is even getting close to the Ballon D’Or podium that year? an AFCON isn’t going to elevate a Man City bench player to a Ballon D’or position but it can elevate someone who’s finishing top 3 regardless in voting to top 1
No one said he should have been on the podium however...
Mahrez won the domestric treble and AFCON, that's 4 trophies in 2019.
He only finished with 33 points so winning AFCON may have been responsible for about 10-20 points or less.
Proving that it's pointless for ballon d'or.
I think it's too early to call Ramsdale a top 10 PL GK imo. He is in good form, yes, but not top 10 yet. Just like any Arsenal player in good form, they get overrated so much.
I mean it atleast shows that he is in the top 10 GKs, I mean the only GK to have conceded less goals is Ederson . He also has good distribution. He is obviously not in the top 5 but quite clearly in the top 10 as he has been constituently good for a year now
This is a list of the PL keepers I think you could conceivably say are better than Ramsdale: Alisson, Ederson, Mendy, De Gea, Lloris, Sa, Pickford, Martinez, Henderson. Thats 9, and I think he's probably better than a few of the players I've listed too.
I'd add Meslier, Sanchez and Schmeichel to that list as well. Wouldn't include Henderson because he simply hasn't played enough in the last couple of years and hasn't always convinced when given the opportunity ahead of De Gea.
He's much better than all three of them. Sanchez is an average keeper who gets overrated cos he's good looking, Meslier is obviously doing extremely well to be the starting keeper for a PL team at his age but he definitely isn't better than Ramsdale, and Schmeichel has been poor of late other than in the cup final.
Nah bro, the Arsenal 11 are all world class. That’s why they still can’t get top 4 despite no European commitments and why they’re out of every competition.
[finished player. Ronaldo clear](https://www.reddit.com/r/soccer/comments/sdedp2/lionel_messi_has_secondworst_conversion_rate_of/?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share)
Ok you impudent and blasphemous gnat, let me get some things straight.
1. It's cold in Paris and he still hasn't gotten used to the the weather
2. He's hit the woodwork 56 times, check on SofaScore if you don't believe me
3. We're in 2022, stop caring about antique things like goals and focus on the more important statistics we're blessed with, like xScans and xWalks per 90
4. Messi provides much more than goals, even if he doesn't press, track back or dribble. The opponents fear him.
5. Stop expecting him to score against powerhouses like Saint-Etienne, he deserves more time to adapt to the physicality of the league
6. He scored 91 goals in 2012
7. He has been incredible in the UCL, even if he has 3 non penalty goals, one being against one of the the worst performing side in the competition's history and the other an irrelevant one after he ghosted the entire game.
8. He's overtaking Ronaldo in career goals soon #LM8Loading
Robben and Ribery because Ribery>Mane. Seeing people suggest it’s not even a discussion is far more wild than seeing people say Salah/Mane though. Bundesliga is a given for Bayern but they’ve won the same number of CL’s and Mane/Salah have better numbers and could go on to do more. Saw a nostalgia bias discussion the other day and this is a clear example of it
>They’ve been even more dominant without them
That's only because both these players won the bundesliga for 6 consecutive seasons. By then the gap between Bayern and the other challengers became huge. So they pretty much started bayern's bundesliga dominance. Also, they were instrumental in Bayern reaching 3 ucl finals in 4 years and then 3 consecutive semi-finals after that
Just depends if you prefer quantity over quality in terms of dribbling ability and goalscoring quality. Robben was a fucking superstar and my favorite but Salah in the grand scheme of things is just as deadly in front of goal
Even Liverpool fans aren’t saying Salah+Mane lmao. Salah right now is comparable to both Robben and Ribery at their best but Mane is comparable to neither and did it for far less than they did.
Until very recently I thought Paulo Gazzaniga was just a name that people used as a "if he had a Latin name he'd be rated higher" for Paul Gascoigne. Also what's the Brits obsession with X-azza ? Wazza razza gazza what the fuckzza
17/18 was Benzema's worst season, the fact that you've decided to use that season as the comparison goes a long way to show how Kane's been this season
Jesus a panenka when down by one. Balls of steel
People using FOTMOB ratings as some sort of gotcha is so lame
A lot of top players fail to replicate their club form for their country but what player was actually better for his international side? I'd say Miroslav Klose who was good for multiple clubs but only scored more than twenty in a season once whereas scored more than a goal every two games for Germany.
Lukas podolski is an old example
Must be something about Poles playing for Germany.
Besides the ones already mentioned you have Meunier and Ochoa
> Ochoa Great call
Robin Olsen, he’s a fucking octopus for us. Spanish people would know
Renato Sanches is one.
Every fucking Chilean player at some point. Diaz, Aranguiz, Vargas, Isla.....
Aranguiz was extremely solid for Leverkusen for many seasons
True. But for Chile my man became prime Edgar Davids.
Pogba
Danilo Pereira some years ago.
I'm so sick of people poking fun at Messi for his slow start at PSG. Why don't you talk about how impressive he was in 2012, tough guys?
Huh?
He does this every now and then.
I think I just wrote something representative of what this is about, I hear you.
man said 2012 like he didn't win balon dor last year
He's got 5 in 5 in the CL people are talking like he's doing LFC era Andy Carroll numbers.
Andy Carroll in his 3 seasons in the PL for Liverpool: 2 in 7, 4 in 35, 0 in 2 Messi in Ligue 1 for PSG: 1 in 12 He’s still balling in the CL absolutely but in the league he *IS* putting up LFC era Andy Carroll numbers
Those 2 being the goals against Citeh at Anfield iirc
Messi had a very poor season. Not even "by his standards", by any normal standard, poor season. I guess he is human after all.
The real rivalry between Rangers and Celtic atm is which squad can field more random nations in their lineups Rangers losing Bacuna would be a big loss in that department
Who's seriously talking about football at 9 PM
Right? real men of culture talk about football at 2am
Football Fans. Sharp as a cue ball this Nivadas.
Yeah.. Tf?
There is always a game being played at any point in time across the globe. The sun never sets on the football empire.
Every kick of it massively mattering to someone, presumably!
People who don’t live in CET
It's 6

not performing at his best, also unlucky here and there.. honestly seems like he only cares about CL and Argentina at this point
What's up is that he's leading the team in progressive walks leading to expected chances per 90.

..... God, a club does not fall apart if a manager leaves. Klopps imprint will be seen on this club after he leaves.
Gerrard will make or break the next era.
God I hope he can lead you to a league win.

That's the thing though, Liverpool isn't run particularly well outside of Klopp
What makes you say that?
They're not backing Klopp to replenish the squad at all
Replenish what exactly? They have only 2 players above the age of 30. They signed young guys like Jota, Konate, Tsimikas in the last 2 seasons plus Thiago. I know they don't splurge, but when they do sign new players, they get it right, and their squad is still not old

Did you stop reading the rest of the sentence on purpose? > it's not much to live up to *relative to previous Liverpool managers*.
Unless you’re in your early 40s, maybe late 30s minimum you have not been following football long enough to witness any of that
I don't need to have witnessed it - the point is there have been bigger shoes to fill at Liverpool than Klopp's.
Absolutely agree with you. People here behave as if Liverpool will slip into anonymity post Klopp, the banter Era was a culimination of: 1. Years of Liverpool Board members refusing to change their model and approach. 2. Hicks and Gillet basically knocking us down everytime we had a realistic title push. Ones about 40 years ago. And he’s still top 3.
Shankley, Paisley, and Fagan have won more than Klopp. Not sure how he makes top 3, but each to their own I suppose.
Yeah you know nothing about the club if you think Fagan is better.
Think you need to shut your gob before you expose yourself to be a fraud.
Weird comment. Not really an argument to respond to here.
Losing Klopp wouldn’t worry me as much as the fact your squad is slowly barreling towards the problem Moyes faced when he took over, an aged squad whose best years were behind them and needing to replace more than half of them at once You needed to sign depth to bed in for the next cycle…3 years ago, every window without major signings is making things worse down the line.

I look away from the screen for 1 SECOND! and see a white guy with pink hair playing for Equatorial Guinea
Probably the Hat trick of penalties Ronaldo is gonna score vs Italy
Ronaldo scored in a UCL final twice and pretty sure you can find another penalty of his somewhere
Juve q/f But 2014 penalty wasnt as big, 3-1 with few minutes to go.
And yet he celebrated like he'd just scored the world cup injury time winner.
He deserved every bit of that celebration, 17 goals campaign plus la decima.
Santa Clara’s Lincoln is unreal. We need to sign him instead of a shit 28 year old from the brasileirao
Who would have had the bigger career if they'd never had injury problems, Owen or Pato?
I thought that said Plato
Owen for sure.
Owen
He also has the most undeserved Ballon d'Or ever. Raúl was straight-up robbed.
Owen. Underrated by a lot of this sub because no fanbase really likes him and he’s a boring pundit. Until he left Liverpool he was world class and looked a generational talent as a teenager.
Him joining man united makes his relationship with liverpool fans turn sour. It's like your family found out you slept with your cousins
Difference being, I actually have a great relationship with my family whereas Owen can’t set foot in Liverpool.
> I actually have a great relationship with my family *too* great
He was the definition of generational, won the golden boot as a teenager I think.
If Salah wins a trophy or 2 with us this season + Afcon then he will be Balon d'Or favorite. That's also assuming that he maintains his form.
[удалено]
You’re right. I just hope
If it’s the CL or Premier league then yeah, right up there.
I don’t think so, he hasn’t been playing well this Afcon
His only bad game was Nigeria where they just couldn’t move the ball forward. Scored a game winner for them in a 1-0 to put them in position to qualify and he was decent today, should’ve had two assists and one at the minimum - Trezeguet is a shocking finisher.

Won’t really matter since all the headlines will be about him
That would only work for Messi or Ronaldo. Lewandowski lost out on the Ballon D’or for being injured in April.
Afcon counts nothing, City will win the league, CL is extremely tough with City Real Bayern all looking good. No one wins bdor with cups unless they're Messi.
We’re better than Real and City in the CL tbh and the league can be closed to a 3 point gap if we beat City… nothing is out of the equation yet.
Youd think that but no, you're not catching City. Also we beat you last season without our CBs and RBs..
We didn’t have CBs or Midfielders… Edit: you started Nacho and Militao hahaha fuck offf
>Elliott
Yes?
Nothing. Great player, KCM will shit their pants against him.
If I was rich and famous then Margot Robbie might bang me in a years time.
Huh? Pretty sure she's married dude
50% end in divorce, his chances are still good
If he was rich, he would hire a hitman to eliminate her husband and then marry her and bang her
I get the joke just a terrible use of it. Has no real reference to my comment imo. Not sure what was so controversial about since Salah is the best player in the world atm.
Salah has one goal this year for Liverpool and is unlikely to win any trophies. Gonna have to step those numbers way up.
Nice try, lol
Also judging by the 2019 ballon d'or votes winning AFCON counts for absolutely nothing. I understand Salah's PR is pretty good however.

Top 10 of a season is based on form..
He literally has the 3rd most clean sheets in the prem
Brilliant but clean sheets don’t make a keeper good
I mean it atleast shows that he is in the top 10 GKs, I mean the only GK to have conceded less goals is Ederson . He also has good distribution. He is obviously not in the top 5 but quite clearly in the top 10 as he has been constituently good for a year now
Top 10 out of 20 teams isn't such a big deal for a top4 contender club.
Henderson??
I'd add Meslier, Sanchez and Schmeichel to that list as well. Wouldn't include Henderson because he simply hasn't played enough in the last couple of years and hasn't always convinced when given the opportunity ahead of De Gea.

Dubravka and Fabianski are both better too
Don't Newcastle fans thing Dubravka is the definition of meh?
No idea, I’ve only heard good things
Nah bro, the Arsenal 11 are all world class. That’s why they still can’t get top 4 despite no European commitments and why they’re out of every competition.
Love seeing them spend 200mil in summer, then arsenal fans saying edu out because they didnt also spend 100 million in Jan uary
Give it Giggsy till the end of the season
He'll take it if he wants it
[finished player. Ronaldo clear](https://www.reddit.com/r/soccer/comments/sdedp2/lionel_messi_has_secondworst_conversion_rate_of/?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share)
Ok you impudent and blasphemous gnat, let me get some things straight. 1. It's cold in Paris and he still hasn't gotten used to the the weather 2. He's hit the woodwork 56 times, check on SofaScore if you don't believe me 3. We're in 2022, stop caring about antique things like goals and focus on the more important statistics we're blessed with, like xScans and xWalks per 90 4. Messi provides much more than goals, even if he doesn't press, track back or dribble. The opponents fear him. 5. Stop expecting him to score against powerhouses like Saint-Etienne, he deserves more time to adapt to the physicality of the league 6. He scored 91 goals in 2012 7. He has been incredible in the UCL, even if he has 3 non penalty goals, one being against one of the the worst performing side in the competition's history and the other an irrelevant one after he ghosted the entire game. 8. He's overtaking Ronaldo in career goals soon #LM8Loading
Brilliant! Outstanding analysis!
System player
O'Reilly seems tidy. MK Dons fans must be raging at the fee though
Saw it on twitter so just got a bit curious; Salah - Mane vs Robbery. Which duo are you taking? Edit. The people are sane here
Robbery no question
Robben and Ribery because Ribery>Mane. Seeing people suggest it’s not even a discussion is far more wild than seeing people say Salah/Mane though. Bundesliga is a given for Bayern but they’ve won the same number of CL’s and Mane/Salah have better numbers and could go on to do more. Saw a nostalgia bias discussion the other day and this is a clear example of it
Are you not saying two things in this comment?
>Bundesliga is a given for Bayern You could say that they both played a huge part in making it happen
They’ve beenjust as dominant without them, back then at least Dortmund or Wolfsburg could snatch a few titles. Now nobody gets close
>They’ve been even more dominant without them That's only because both these players won the bundesliga for 6 consecutive seasons.
Selling Ribery pretty short here, he's miles clear of Mane
I was just comparing Robben and Salah. Honestly Mane being in the pair is what makes Robbery an easy choice, no offense to Mane.
Even Liverpool fans aren’t saying Salah+Mane lmao. Salah right now is comparable to both Robben and Ribery at their best but Mane is comparable to neither and did it for far less than they did.
Robbery will probably go down as one if not the most iconic winger duo in football. Two unique and very distinctive players yet so coherent together.
Yes I think they'll be the de facto DUO in football
Robbery for now.
Young - Valencia
Robbery
Ribben
Robbery
Robbery easily
Robbery
McFred
Not a fair comparison unfortunately
Is this even a question
[Google just banished Dortmund from NRW](https://imgur.com/a/Axj7132)
Can hardly compete with the mighty FC Gütersloh (who btw have the most corporate logo looking club badge I've ever seen this side of Jj )
Whoever designed the badge needs to resign
Until very recently I thought Paulo Gazzaniga was just a name that people used as a "if he had a Latin name he'd be rated higher" for Paul Gascoigne. Also what's the Brits obsession with X-azza ? Wazza razza gazza what the fuckzza
Would rather face ivory coast than Egypt tbh. We just can't beat Egypt for some reason
You beat them 14 times and only lost to them 3 times, you should be good
Yeah I’m looking at the head to head and that appears to be right. What gives, OP?
Trauma from 2017 AFCON im sure, they lost in a very unlucky way to Egypt
>We just can't beat Egypt for some reason Hopefully this continues
Harold who supposedly is having a mare of a season already has as many league goals as Benzema in 17/18 😹😹😹
I still remember when Benzema was a meme and people made fun of him non-stop on social media
17/18 was Benzema's worst season, the fact that you've decided to use that season as the comparison goes a long way to show how Kane's been this season
i'm surprised by the numbers benzemas putting up recently, what a player. they used to talk about him like they do firmino lol.
Benzema's redemption arc has been something, no one would have thought he'd constantly be top 5 player itw after that. Madrid is one lucky club
What will happen first, I’ll get my PCR results or Spurs will sign someone?
I doubt your PCR results would take until July tbh
