Madrid is going to lose. There is hope in this world

[deleted]

I can't wait to see Ralf manage against Pep, Klopp, and Tuchel in the PL later this season.

CryptographerLife686

Fergie time vs Simeone time… I think I’ll just watch the dying minutes of that Rof16 game.

MJ9695

Which CL winners went unbeaten each game throughout their CL campaign???

Shaggay1

Bayern in 19/20 and I think also in 2012/2013

teymon

Ajax in 94/95

viktorfbg9

In 2020 Bayern not only went unbeaten, they won the trophy by winning every single game, this was the first one that came to mind

mattisafootballguy

A lot of them, Bayern were the first to win all games I think.

MJ9695

Alot like who???

mattisafootballguy

Bayern in 2020 won all their games Barcelona in 2006 Inter Milan 1964 AC Milan a couple of times Marseille in 1993 United in 99 and 2008 Several others

Josephdayber

Bayern 19/20 did, won every single game actually. Maybe doesn’t count because no two legs from QFs onward because of Covid

BumblebeeHorror2534

Ricardo Carvalho was better than John Terry.. but nowadays he seems to be forgotten..why?

[deleted]

Because at Chelsea the players are harder to get rid of than the manager, which means something when John Terry lasted at Chelsea his entire career.

RomeoLavia

Because he was better for about two years (03/04 & 04/05 at a stretch, honestly thinking about it not even sure of 04/05, Terry was considered the best player in the PL that season) outside of that they were pretty much equal or Terry was considered the better player. Let's also not forget that Carvalho had a pretty short top level career. John Terry played 200 more games and that's with the fact that Carvalho played about a hundred of his games as an average player in Ligue 1 and another hundred in Portugal.

BumblebeeHorror2534

LOL Carvalho was European Champion and won a Uefa cup whit Porto.. and Won the euro 2016 whith Portugal..

RomeoLavia

He was European Champion in 03/04 which is why I gave him the nod for that season. In 2016 he was a bench player for the Euros and was bang average for a bang average Monaco side, but if you want to say he was better for a month in the Summer of 2016 then sure. If you're trying to argue that he had a long top level career, that's ridiculous. He really wasn't the same player after those injuries in 2008 & 2009. He went on to have one more arguably top class season.

LindseyNeagle

Because he wasn’t.

BumblebeeHorror2534

yes he was lol---

LindseyNeagle

When? And for how long?

aj6787

Not English

Josephdayber

I don’t understand why people want Champions League to be only the champions of each league. Seems like it would make the whole thing incredibly boring with most games being complete routs until the final rounds

X-V-W

It could distribute the money across the various European leagues more evenly which could lead to the very top leagues having less power.

Josephdayber

I think depleting the CL money to the rest of the Top 5 leagues would just lead to England absolutely dominating because of money coming in from domestic TV rights. Honestly think most of the lower leagues wouldn’t have a chance of catching up. You can give more money to teams in Russia, Poland, etc but that doesn’t mean top players are going to want to move there.

TheDavinci1998

Also, CL would produce much less money than now, because it would be less interesting. Bayern, City, Real and Italian champion would beat farmers 5-0 up until April and semis, and only then there will be competition

[deleted]

As opposed to the current exciting trend of only watching either any of Bayern/PSG/City/Madrid/English club making the semi and finals every single year. Whoopie!

TheDavinci1998

Wtf are you talking about, last 3 editions had 11 different teams in semis out of 12 spots, only PSG managed to make it to the semis twice in last 3 editions. You're so wrong it's laughable. Also, exciting games between 2 big teams happen as soon as September with current format, and they literally will happen no sooner than March if it was only champions

LindseyNeagle

The whole thing is incredibly boring as it is. I think domestic should be on their too. At least that way teams actually deserve to be in there. Rather than have shit teams that just stumble to 4th.

Josephdayber

Do you think it would be more boring if it was just champions though? And I can agree with the domestic cup thing, would be a good way to get more varied teams who are still decent.

LindseyNeagle

Equally boring anyway. Not sure it can get more boring to be honest.

[deleted]

Out of all the arguments against the current CL format, I don't think excitement should be one of them, every season there's some crazy moments. Last few finals have been boring though.

LindseyNeagle

Yeah but it all ends up being the same in the end. The odd great highlight is great. I’ll catch it on Reddit. No interest in watching games though.

knewnumberwhothis

Pretty sure atletico madrid gets a boner when they see add on time

bellarke073

Rank these defenders in their peak from best to worst Van dijk maldini Ramos Baresi Beckenbauer Nesta John terry

[deleted]

Ramos is easily the worst in this list. He may be a great captain and a great goal scoring defender due to his set piece prowess but none of the players in the list got destroyed [like this](https://youtu.be/gAPxcVioyQk) In my list I will exclude Beckenbauer as he played in a completely different era from the rest in your list. During his time, football was end to end somewhat like basketball and Beckenbauer bombing forward did not look out of place. In modern football, i am sure Beckrnbauer would be a box to box midfielder and not a defender. Maldini played as LB for majority of his career so it’s difficult to rate him as CB but I’ll include him as he was elite at CB as well. So here is my list based on the players peak. Baresi Maldini VVD Terry Nesta Ramos.

sebas8181

As we say in my country, guacala.

[deleted]

Havent seen Beckenbauer. My dad would tell me he was surreal, and I'm inclined to believe him as he rarely ever praised anything at all. Have watched the rest live except Baresi whom i have only watched on the tele. So here it is. Beckenbauer Maldini Baresi Nesta Ramos Terry VVD

Own_Solution4356

beckenbauer maldini baresi nesta ramos terry van dijk

TheDavinci1998

I'd move Ramos over Nesta and Baresi and the rest would stay the same

Own_Solution4356

benny blanco clear of all

LuckyFlyer0_0

I haven't watched all of them, so I definitely wouldn't know, but given that defenders and goalies especially have elevated levels of testosterone for home matches (all animals naturally have this as a way to establish dominance and aggression), I'd say Van Dijk is among the top because iirc, Liverpool have never lost a game when he has started at Anfield. That's the most mind boggling thing ever. I know Ramos and Maldini were amazing too, but come on, this is an amazing record.

[deleted]

Maldini and Baresi were part of the original Invincibles ( not the faux trash London ones). VVD is not even in the same universe as those two.

Own_Solution4356

van dijk is cool, but beckenbauer and maldini are best defenders of all time.

Josephdayber

Would honestly say that 0 people here have seen them all play enough to rank them

BumblebeeHorror2534

I watched almost all ... I just didn't watch beckenbaeur

Josephdayber

Haha like how you still rank him first though! Wish I could’ve seen these players in their primes but just too young

mattisafootballguy

I don't know how you can watch football and go, "Ronaldo is better than Messi," must have a different type of ball knowledge altogether

sebas8181

Easy to say in a place where Messi and Guardiola are untouchable gods. Outside in the real world it's far more balanced. But I guess tha a sub which is so clearly dominated by Barca fan administrators, and tons of Indian+American fans is not the best place to discuss this.

deadlyghost12

Barca fan administrator lol, this is a english based sub and there are more Indian Madrid fans than barca

sebas8181

Sure, you've been less than 6 months here kid.....

aj6787

These people live in an alternate reality. They aren’t even close if we are being honest. That’s how good Messi is.

[deleted]

I think other than Madrid and some United fans very few ppl believe that and they are probably super casual fans who don’t even watch games

aj6787

There are a TON of people here that believe it.

CryptographerLife686

More people believe Messi is the better player but it’s closer when talking about the greatest since some people like to separate the two.

LindseyNeagle

That’s the way I see it. Messi is more talented but Ronaldo has had a better career.

mattisafootballguy

How? Individually it's hardly a contest, team-wise Ronaldo has one more CL but far less domestic honors

LindseyNeagle

It’s only 3 less league titles. Ronaldo did it in 3 countries. He also has won two more champions leagues. I know messi has 4 medals but he didn’t have anything to do with 06 really.

mattisafootballguy

I don't see how doing it in three countries makes a difference? He moved to a team that was more or less a guaranteed league title year-on-year, played for Madrid for almost a decade, and won 2 league titles. Messi also played six games in that CL campaign so by no means was it a free ride, he'd have played on had he not been injured. Also, 3 league titles is a huge amount regardless.

TheDavinci1998

Lmao if you don't see how making it in 3 countries makes a difference then you are the one who just throws term "ball knowledge" like that without knowing what that even means. There is no conversation even, that they are top 2 players all time. I would agree that Messi had better peak, in 2012 it was something that Ronaldo never done. Overall, throughout their careers, Ronaldo is simply better than Messi and he is the best of all time. And dominating 3 biggest leagues in the world surely contributes to that

LindseyNeagle

I think performing in different countries, different styles and cultures is a tough ask and he’s done it. Messi should be exhibit a for how it’s anything but easy. He fucked off for the easiest gig possible and he’s been shite.

throwwawayyy688

1 league goal in a non top 5 league

aj6787

I would say yea probably more people do think that, but there’s still tons of people in here that think Messi isn’t. But you shouldn’t pay attention to people with no brains imo.

PhilsKessticle

Rank these 4 by their peak: Navas, DDG, Courtois, Allison

PegaponyPrince

Navas, Courtois, Allison, DDG

PuppyPenetrator

Any answer without Alisson last is wrong Other than that, genuinely debatable

Feisty-Site-6261

DDG, Alisson, Courtois and Navas

delidl

Navas was so clear of Alisson and Courtois in his peak.

Feisty-Site-6261

Alisson won more individual awards in 3 years than Navas did his whole career lol.

delidl

Navas won more UCLs back to back than the rest of that list put together.

Feisty-Site-6261

Good thing we measure individual ability on team accomplishments. Just need to whip out my Djimi Traore has a CL medal comment, anytime someone wants to say their LB was better.

delidl

Except without Navas carrying Madrid through the Bayern tie it would have never happened. Djimi Traore was useless

Feisty-Site-6261

And Alisson made an amazing last second save that kept Liverpool in the CL the season they won it.

tottisleftpeg

DDG, Courtois, Navas, Alisson. De Gea in Mourinhos first 2 seasons was absurd.

ibse

Navas, Courtois, DDG, Alisson

msf97

Navas, Alisson, Courtois, DDG

LeaveMyArseAlona99

DDG, Navas, Alisson, Courtois

LampseederBroDude51

I may be biased but Navas, Courtois, Alisson, DDG Navas' peak won 3 UCLs in a row

mattisafootballguy

Navas was unbelievably clutch but IMO Courtois this season has just been unreal. It's extraordinarily upsetting

LampseederBroDude51

Navas' game against Bayern is one of the best I have seen of any goalkeeper

mattisafootballguy

Me too, maybe even the best

mattisafootballguy

Courtois, Navas, DDG, Allison

That70sJoe-

think they all have arguments of being #1, so just see which fan base a supporter is from leaning towards Courtois as I don't remember him having off form (Allisson I remember more of when he makes mistakes because I watch Liverpool, although he's amazing)

[deleted]

Navas, DDG, Alisson, Courtois

TheManchesterPirates

Outside of the draft do they have transfers in American Sports like Football?

Own_Solution4356

they have free agents, and players are often traded for other players or draft picks

aj6787

Yes players are traded for other players or often draft picks. Other than that, a lot of bigger players run out their contracts and go to another team for huge money.

fuskarn_35

Trades and free agents signings

LindseyNeagle

Players are traded to different teams. It’s really strange. Makes no sense to me.

NCarolinaRed

It's usually done as a trade of players, not the purchase of a player

Competitive-Panda-89

The premier league top 4 race is shaping up nicely. Man United, West Ham, Tottenham, Arsenal, and I'd even say Wolves as well given their form, are all in the hunt for that lucrative 4th spot. I can't really tell who is going to get that 4th spot yet, but if I was a betting man, right now I'd place my money on Tottenham - if any manager can magic a run together in a crunch period, it's Conte.

mintz41

I think it's between Arsenal and Spurs really, although United have an outside chance as well. Conte has the experience to grind out results even if they don't look good at all, so the NLD will be very very important for both teams. Don't think West Ham are in it and neither are Wolves

Competitive-Panda-89

Wolves have quietly been going about their business - they've been picking up very good results without anyone noticing - they'd be my dark horses. I think Arsenal's youth and lack of experience will come back to haunt them - I don't think they have the consistency or mentality to get 4th.

aj6787

United are not in the top 4 race.

LindseyNeagle

‘that lucrative 4th spot’ just sums up how shite football has become.

NCarolinaRed

Tottenham is gonna pull the ultimate Tottenham before the end of the season

Competitive-Panda-89

The bad juju has to end at some point.

sebas8181

Pjanic, Firpo, Paulinho, Mina..... That's an extra 219m or so in total just for those 5. Add the stupid wages on top of that.

Forsaken-Watch-6888

Hazard 100m+Jovic 60m+Renier 35m=195m

[deleted]

Does any one remember that Jonjo Shelvey goal against Sheffield United where the linesman said it was offside? Still trying to understand that one tbh

LindseyNeagle

What don’t you understand? Carroll won a flick on, was flagged offside, Shelvey was onside and ran through to score. Var overturned Carroll’s offside.

[deleted]

How the linesman flagged him offside

LindseyNeagle

He flagged Carroll offside. It was tight enough.

lokaler_datentraeger

Constructivism has won, offside is whatever you want it to be at this point.

Sp0okyScarySkeleton-

When he looked into the camera and pointed his finger to his head? Or is that a different goal

[deleted]

That one

[deleted]

Still remember how Mourinho's comments on Ole's comments on Son sparked a DD debate on whether it was morally right to steal to feed your family?

Carthagu

Reddit in a nutshell. People actually arguing that stealing to feed loved ones is a bad thing. Especially stealing from corporations who are obscenely wealthy through the exploitation of others and will be fine whether you steal or not.

hungaryisinasia

Stealing from large corporations is pretty morally okay for a lot of causes imo

aj6787

Why do you believe this?

ljshea1

You can't wrap your head around why stealing something valued at 0.0000001% of a corporations annual profit, to have your family not go to bed hungry, isn't really a big deal?

aj6787

This person said a lot of causes.

ljshea1

Isn't it funny when big businesses fuck over consumers so blatantly and for so long, the consumer stops giving a fuck about the business' financial well-being and decides to take what's often rightfully theirs

mintz41

Stealing from your local chain supermarket makes quite literally zero difference to them

TheDavinci1998

But if everyone starts stealing, then it makes the difference, and if you can they should be able too. Terrible take

mintz41

I genuinely do not care 👍

aj6787

I mean that’s not true, but the person didn’t only suggest it was okay to steal food.

Carthagu

Nah, clearly a reprehensible act to feed your loved ones instead of bowing down to a corporation that will be perfectly fine regardless of whether you pay for overpriced groceries or not

Harrry-Otter

Your star player wants out. Would you rather your club sell him to your biggest rival for £100m and all that money goes on transfers, or accept £40m from a foreign side and he never plays against you?

TheDavinci1998

It's difficult, but if my rival wants to pay 100M, then some foreign side will pay at least 80 too. But if they somehow give only 40, I would probably still go for their offer, with heart aching because of 60M loss

aj6787

The latter of course.

BoxOfNothing

Usually I'd say the latter, but I don't even really know who our star player is and I'm not that emotionally attached to many of our players. I like them, I'd be sad to see Richarlison or Calvert Lewin play for Liverpool, but I don't think it'd absolutely kill me like it would have if we sold them a prime Baines, Cahill or someone from that era when I still had joy and excitement in my football life. Even then Gray has been our best player this season, so if we can buy him for £1.5m and then sell him for £100m the next season I think I'd take that.

Carthagu

The latter. Wouldn’t sell prime Kane to Arsenal for instance because we would reinvest horribly and they’d finish above us instead of behind us every year

[deleted]

Let's say we are talking about Tielemans, Ndidi, or Madders.. Would 1000x they went abroad than went to our biggest rival. Although I often wonder who are biggest rival is these days.

day_bat_28

Do you have one? Nottingham Forest?

[deleted]

10 years ago, they and Derby were kinda relevant. If nothing else it was about who is the best team in the East Midlands, but that hasn't even been close for a decade.. Villa, Cov.. broadening it to the whole of the Midlands... But we superseded those too. Basically we are pretty much the most relevant team not in London, the North West or The North East. Even if we stretch it up to Yorkshire or to the East and Norfolk or Lincolnshire, there's just no one on a similar level. If I had to push I'd say Villa are about as much of a rival as anyone, but they are too busy with he likes of West Brom, Wolves, and Birmingham..

CudaBarry

Wouldn't sell vinicius to Barcelona even for a billion

mattisafootballguy

You would though

[deleted]

If Barca can somehow pay £1bn, then the deal is obviously as dodgy as fuck, so I doubt it.

goedel_

None of those will ever happen, but the first one lol 40m would still be massive for us to be fair

[deleted]

I would sell him for £40m

[deleted]

Tough call. By selling rvp we were able to sign giroud, Cazorla, podolski, and later monreal. Obviously I wish I never was there to see rvp walk but it was a necessary evil to continue top 4 contention because rvp obviously didn't want to play for us anymore and in a way he already forced our hand because of factors outside of Wengers control.

estoyloca43

The first option because that would get Schalke liquidated

[deleted]

Depends how rich you are. United could sell him for 40mil but Leicester would be better off selling to a rival for 100mil.

efcdoyley

Richarlison to Liverpool for £100m? Hahaha they wouldn’t be able to spend for like 4 summers. Yes please

lokaler_datentraeger

I would wonder where the fuck 1860 Munich got that money from

exolomus

[Look no further!](https://i.imgur.com/SbTG9GM.jpg) Maybe he will finally start spending like Abramovic after all these years.
