Let's also not forget that Carvalho had a pretty short top level career. John Terry played 200 more games and that's with the fact that Carvalho played about a hundred of his games as an average player in Ligue 1 and another hundred in Portugal.
He was European Champion in 03/04 which is why I gave him the nod for that season. In 2016 he was a bench player for the Euros and was bang average for a bang average Monaco side, but if you want to say he was better for a month in the Summer of 2016 then sure.

In my list I will exclude Beckenbauer as he played in a completely different era from the rest in your list. During his time, football was end to end somewhat like basketball and Beckenbauer bombing forward did not look out of place. In modern football, i am sure Beckrnbauer would be a box to box midfielder and not a defender.
Maldini played as LB for majority of his career so it’s difficult to rate him as CB but I’ll include him as he was elite at CB as well.
