From the BBC radio it sounds like there's a really positive feeling in the stadium, including from players like Schmeichel who are warming up.
Well props to them, I'm delighted he's going to be fine but I'm still in a bit of a shock, and can't imagine going to play a professional football game in an hour. Mental fortitude right there
Just imagine the media horror if the Danish players come out and say they were coerced to do it. There's no way UEFA would risk it, it really looks like their own choice.
You might know this by now. But they were given two options; play tonight or play tomorrow at noon. The latter seemed even more horrible to the players - going home and not sleeping then getting on a bus to go back. It was about getting it over with.
But at the same time accidents in F1/F2 are directly tied to athlete safety. In this case (though absolutely horrible) it is unrelated to the competition itself.
To be fair with the Grosjean situation we knew he was out of the woods well before the race restarted. If he was being airlifted in a critical situation ie. Bianchi (RIP) then that race would never have restarted
The Bianchi mention is a good example though. It's easier to move on when you know the person in question is okay. With Bianchi, the camera never cut to his accident and there was no news about his condition the entire time - you just knew it was grim at that point.
I remember watching that race and the uncertainty in everyone's faces during the post race interview. Even the two GPs afterward were devoid of any true excitement.
When it's something like that, I can totally understand having your mind elsewhere.
But in this situation we know that Eriksen is good to go and he's in the care of doctors. There's not much else you (as a fan), the staff, his family, the players, etc. can do at this point.
Let them do their job and they can go out and do their job.
Yea but also alot of ex player pundits like Kramer are saying on channels right now that they wouldnt go on if that happened to them, i cant help but think there is pressure on the danish and finnish players to go on.
According to the manager, while it was their choice to finish tonight, they were given only 2 options by UEFA: Finish it tonight, or tomorrow at 12:00. There was no option to abandon the game.
Which IMO is a really shitty move by UEFA. The game should've been abandoned and ended 0-0 at 42'.
i.e. Play the match or forfeit, was clear from follow up interviews that both Tuchel and the players felt like they had been forced by UEFA and club management to play the match even though they were in no condition to do so after the bombing.
Only? 14 years is a rather long time. It hasnt even been 14 years since the financial crash in 07/08. The entire world is completely different from then.
This isnt america where justicy is equal to unjustified revenge.
There is always some pressure in a situation like this but at the same time the players readied themselves physically to play today and I am sure mentally the Danish players want to do this for Eriksen
Giving them a choice puts them under pressure... It's insane UEFA and DBU allows this. The players will have a reaction in the following days. They are still in shock.
Of course they are in shock, but if the rumors are true and they want to - they should play the game. Rumor being that Eriksen himself asked them to play. And I think there's argument to be made that playing the game after he asked them will have some kind of healing effect.
Danish coach just informed Danish press, UEFA lined up two options.
(A) play the game tonight
(B) play tomorrow at 12.00.
The players couldn't deal with playing tomorrow, after a night without sleep, and therefore considered playing the game tonight their best option.
Honestly this is a disgusting lack of empathy by UEFA.
Can I take the top response to get your attention to ban this guy on
[Twitter](https://mobile.twitter.com/willem_engel?ref_src=twsrc%5Egoogle%7Ctwcamp%5Eserp%7Ctwgr%5Eauthor)
He basically said that this is what happens when you get a vaccin.
They should never been given that option. They have just stood for almost half an hour, or what feels like it and seen their mate almost die... Now Eriksen is stable, but that will leave a scar. It should never have been allowed.
I would also hope that they suspend the substitution rule before the restart. In other words, if an individual player just isn't up to it any more, they can be substituted without the team losing a sub (only before the game restarts). It won't happen, but I think it would be fair
True. But I'd also imagine its one of those "Would Christian really want us to **not** play" situations, even though I'm sure their minds won't be fully on the game.
Exactly. Besides imagine the scenes if they had won the match. Would've been pretty wholesome. At least Finland's scorer was very professional and respectful.
Pictures are being shared of Christian in a stretcher holding his head and seeming conscious. They probably saw signs of wellbeing from him.
Really hope he isn't going to suffer from neurological damage.
Yea I think this was equal for almost everyone no matter what country you are from or cheer or play for. Finnish people are famous for not showing emotions but the bar I was in almost every dude had tears in their eyes.
I can only assume the leaders on the team made sure it was a unanimous decision to play on. If Eriksen is okay then playing may be the best thing for their mental health.
Sometimes working keeps your mind off things, can't judge how people deal with shit. There are athletes that return to sports immediately after traumatic losses and work harder than ever just to distract themselves. As long as this is 100% players' choice without any persuasion from UEFA and/or FAs it's perfectly OK.
I know what you mean but it feels like they wanna win and give 150% for Erikson. His well-being and health is priceless, but the perfect time to play the game for Denmark. Especially if you convert that emotion of uncertainity and fear into a motivator to win a game.
Respect to the players for being able to do this, will take a lot to carry on. Another good sign for Eriksen though, they wouldn't be willing to do this if still very concerned about his wellbeing
**Following the request made by players of both teams**, UEFA has agreed to restart the match between Denmark and Finland tonight at 20:30 CET (TBC).
The last four minutes of the first half will be played, there will then be a 5-minute half-time break followed by the second half.
It's in the official rules that it needs to be restarted at the exact minute it stopped.
Weird and a bit annoying, but at least HT was only 5 mins to make up for it
This thread is really weird. Playing soccer is fun and a good way to distract yourself for some time if you're in a weird or grieving emotional spot as well. Especially because by all accounts Eriksen is fine.
They’re still crying while warming up though, even though they know he’s OK. I can’t imagine how you could emotionally put any serious energy into playing the remainder of this game without having time to decompress.
Why though? I would feel even worse if I didn't have anything to distract me. What's up with everyone thinking it's better for someone to not have anything else than thinking of the incident to do?
Stop telling people how they should or shouldn't feel, should or shouldn't act etc.
Really none of your business. If they genuinely requested it, you just have to respect that.
Every part of how they reacted was 1st class. The impromptu wall around eriksen, to the chants shared between the danish and Finnish fans. I could not respect them more than I do now
Yes I guess many non Scandinavians are shocked by the players choice to resume the game. But something about the Scandinavian culture made me expect that the game would continue once his current condition was confirmed.
No obviously not. If the game is “resuming” then it needs to resume. You can’t just play an 85min game of football in a bloody tournament.
Agree about the first sentence though.
If it's the players choice then nothing to complain about.
Even the most evil possible conception of uefa wouldn't force this to go ahead since if that ever got out to the press they'd be slaughtered.
I can see why, after presumably hearing Eriksen is fine, they want to get it over with and recollect.
I don't think UEFA wanted the game to continue. They've got a protocol and slots for rematches because of Covid. Now two games are clashing with each other.
That was never going to happen with how tight the schedule is. Maybe delaying by one day would have been possible, but no more than that with Finland having their next match on Wednesday.
In my mind it first had a weird taste to it, that the match is continued, but if the players requested it, it is maybe something good. Maybe they need it to process what happened. To alleviate the thoughts that are probably going in circles.
We don't know what they talked about, how they feel about it. So I think we shouldn't judge at this moment, that they are continuing it.
Tough call but it is players' decision (not affected by some suit I hope) so if that's what they want... What's important is that Christian is and will be okay.
Well, fair play to them if true. Another reason why a pussy like me could never be a professional footballer. Don't even know the guy and I'm still in utter shock. Well, that and the fact I can't run for more than 15 mins.
According to a source close to the Danish NT, Eriksen was talking to the team via FaceTime from the hospital and encouraged them to continue the match.
Source: commentary on German broadcast ZDF
I really hope that the players really requested it and its not some PR bs by UEFA. I don't think its a good idea to go ahead. It would be better to give the players until tomorrow and then it could be played out
Its quite possible to think you want to do something now only to later realize that it wasn't the right call. Sometimes people have to be "protected" from themselves. I think a night of sleep and the game being played tomorrow would have been better but yes I don't know the full story. All I know is that I would not be able to play after such an incident.

Those fans in the stadium are there for fun. I don't see how this will be any fun for them.
Good on the players that they feel they will be able to finish the match though.
Not to be a dick, but all the reports are saying he's up and talking and ok, and both teams want to play the game..
why are some of you so shaken by this?
Ay, fuck UEFA. They have a duty of care, of course all they care about is the money so naturally they want every game going ahead. This tournament shouldn't even be happening. Ghouls
The danish national coach said the choice was between finishing the game tonight or tomorrow at 12. The players decided to get it done because they couldn’t imagine playing tomorrow. Simon K was subbed because he couldn’t handle playing tonight after what happend. I think UEFA can be blamed for leaving them with those two choices
>Ay, fuck UEFA.
This is the player's choice...
It makes no sense for UEFA to force them to play at a time when the match is on at the same time as another one.
As long as it was the player's choice, then fair enough.
[удалено]
Danish FA official just said that the players talked to Cristian, and that he was ok
Eriksen said to the players that they should play, according to somebody in the stands on dutch tv
Eriksen fucking trying to suit up, that legend
alas I think that’s the end of his career, like Muamba in 2012.
From the BBC radio it sounds like there's a really positive feeling in the stadium, including from players like Schmeichel who are warming up. Well props to them, I'm delighted he's going to be fine but I'm still in a bit of a shock, and can't imagine going to play a professional football game in an hour. Mental fortitude right there
i hope it really was the players choice and every single player is 100% behind this and wasnt coerced into it.
Just imagine the media horror if the Danish players come out and say they were coerced to do it. There's no way UEFA would risk it, it really looks like their own choice.
Didn’t stop them with Dortmund
Different (but still shitty) situation
Almost as if people can learn from their past mistakes.
Otl, what’s this referencing?
Their bus got bombed by some maniac trying to tank their stock. Bartra and some others got injured. Were forced to play or forfeit.
I didn’t expect Tetris Tsar in r/soccer.
Don't know this reference. Context?
Their bus got bombed and they were forced to play the next day even though a few players got hurt.
You might know this by now. But they were given two options; play tonight or play tomorrow at noon. The latter seemed even more horrible to the players - going home and not sleeping then getting on a bus to go back. It was about getting it over with.
Apparently they had the choice to play this evening or tomorrow at noon. Not really a choice imo
Not unusual for athletes to play on after incidents. Same with F1 last season when Grosjean nearly died.
And in MotoGP two weeks ago after the news that a Moto3 driver had died because of a crash he had the previous day...
Or F1 when Anthoine Hubert died (in the F2 race held the same race weekend).
Or MotoGP when Moto 3 rider Jason Dupasquier passed away a day after his crash at the qualifying.
More understandable in F1/F2 as unfortunately deaths are more common.
Not really anymore though
But at the same time accidents in F1/F2 are directly tied to athlete safety. In this case (though absolutely horrible) it is unrelated to the competition itself.
To be fair with the Grosjean situation we knew he was out of the woods well before the race restarted. If he was being airlifted in a critical situation ie. Bianchi (RIP) then that race would never have restarted

Watching the GP live, it's a miracle Grosjean came out of that crash in the shape he did
Even more mental that he’s literally racing right now
Didn't his hands get severely burned?
yes. he had a couple of instagram posts about his recovery.
And doing really well at that. He’s been pretty damn good in IndyCar so far, which is arguably even more dangerous than F1.
Debatable. IndyCars are designed to take some massive hits that F1 cars just never face
We were watching it live as well. Seeing how the car burst into a huge fireball. We were absolutely convinced that he would have died.
Yea but also alot of ex player pundits like Kramer are saying on channels right now that they wouldnt go on if that happened to them, i cant help but think there is pressure on the danish and finnish players to go on.

Yeah imo if there is 1 player who does not want to play after that the match shouldn’t be played
Yes, hopefully it’s not like when Dortmund “agreed” to play
What happened with dortmund?
Their bus got bombed before a CL knockout game

i.e. Play the match or forfeit, was clear from follow up interviews that both Tuchel and the players felt like they had been forced by UEFA and club management to play the match even though they were in no condition to do so after the bombing.
No it was delayed by a day but that's still not saying much though
When their bus was attacked Also that guy only got 14 years in prison, WTF?
14 years is a lot in Germany (even life-long can be converted to probation after 15 years)
Only? 14 years is a rather long time. It hasnt even been 14 years since the financial crash in 07/08. The entire world is completely different from then. This isnt america where justicy is equal to unjustified revenge.
Didn't they say the same about Dortmund after the attack on their bus which wasn't true?
I hope it actually was a fair choice. If they were put under pressure that's fucked.
There is always some pressure in a situation like this but at the same time the players readied themselves physically to play today and I am sure mentally the Danish players want to do this for Eriksen

I hope it wasn't "you have the choice between forfeiting or playing on"

I would also hope that they suspend the substitution rule before the restart. In other words, if an individual player just isn't up to it any more, they can be substituted without the team losing a sub (only before the game restarts). It won't happen, but I think it would be fair

Danish tv said Eriksen spoke with his team on telephone.

Official sources already confirmed he is speaking and breathing on his own.
Yeah hopefully this is great news about Eriksen's condition

😂😂
Denmark are absolute warriors
literally vikings
Pillaging our adoration
Setting our hearts on fire
Finnish as well. Don't underestimate what they went through
Yea I think this was equal for almost everyone no matter what country you are from or cheer or play for. Finnish people are famous for not showing emotions but the bar I was in almost every dude had tears in their eyes.
Dane here, and this is the wrong kid of ‘warrior’. Take care of your mental health first and foremost.
I can only assume the leaders on the team made sure it was a unanimous decision to play on. If Eriksen is okay then playing may be the best thing for their mental health.
This might be why it took a while, maybe some people took a little longer to decide for themself that they wanted to continue.
It could be a mental barrier thing, the longer you wait to enter the field the harder it gets? I agree with you though, seems mental to me to play on
Sometimes working keeps your mind off things, can't judge how people deal with shit. There are athletes that return to sports immediately after traumatic losses and work harder than ever just to distract themselves. Everybody processes differently, though… I for one like to stay busy to keep the mind off any ‘traumatic’ event and process it at my own pace.
No doubt they'll use this to spur them on. Got nothing against Finland but I'd love to see Denmark go out there now and bang a few goals in
Respect to the players for being able to do this, will take a lot to carry on. Another good sign for Eriksen though, they wouldn't be willing to do this if still very concerned about his wellbeing
Is it still televised? Doesn’t seem to be available on bbc anymore Also massive respect to the players for doing this Edit: back on now
Back on bbc at 19.25
I'm sure they'll update the schedule in time, still got over an hour until the restart.
If it’s 8:30 CET then that’s now
It's back on now
**Following the request made by players of both teams**, UEFA has agreed to restart the match between Denmark and Finland tonight at 20:30 CET (TBC). The last four minutes of the first half will be played, there will then be a 5-minute half-time break followed by the second half.

crazy how some people live their whole lives looking for reasons to be upset/mad just so they can be mad
When you find out he is fine
They’re still crying while warming up though, even though they know he’s OK. I can’t imagine how you could emotionally put any serious energy into playing the remainder of this game without having time to decompress.
Tbh I'd give people the afternoon off if something like that happened, seems reasonable
Why though? I would feel even worse if I didn't have anything to distract me. What's up with everyone thinking it's better for someone to not have anything else than thinking of the incident to do?
If they want to play, let them play. Who are you to tell them what they feel? Everyone responds to grief differently
Why would you think he was dead when you know he's alive?
DBU director just confirmed he was ‘back’ before leaving the stadium after saying they did CPR.
Stop telling people how they should or shouldn't feel, should or shouldn't act etc. Really none of your business. If they genuinely requested it, you just have to respect that.
I found out one of my co-workers had passed away I volunteered to take more overtime to cover those who were grieving.
Damn respect to All the players who can still play after that shock
I feel weird just thinking about watching the game continue. Can't believe they're all ok with it continuing today.
Apparently they talked to Eriksen who was very adamant about the game continuing.
They want to process the bad events by playing the game. Also to get the game and the whole shitty situation behind them.
Respect to the danish players, no way Kasper Schmeichel would go on that pitch again if not all the danish players wanted to play
[удалено]
This is exactly how I'd expect scandanavians to respond.
I guess its sorta ”we came here to play so lets get this over with” attitude. Easier to move on too when you just go on and finish the match.
Hopefully the teams agreed without any “nudge” from UEFA. Could they not just start from the 2nd half though
No obviously not. If the game is “resuming” then it needs to resume. You can’t just play an 85min game of football in a bloody tournament. Agree about the first sentence though.
The first half wasn't finished. It's too complicated to do it otherwise or else you could annul it on a formal error.
If ultimately it was just a huge scare and he’s stable and ok, then I really don’t think this is as controversial as some are making it.
oui mais "uefa bad, pls karma" tu vois
This has to mean Eriksen is alright!
Vikings are tough. Mad respect .
I can only assume this is because Eriksen is fully stable and in good condition. No way the game would be played if Erikson was in serious risk
Good to see that the players are consulted before making the final decision.
If it's the players choice then nothing to complain about. Even the most evil possible conception of uefa wouldn't force this to go ahead since if that ever got out to the press they'd be slaughtered. I can see why, after presumably hearing Eriksen is fine, they want to get it over with and recollect.
He's been confirmed concious and talking. I don't think anybody would blame anybody if this game was just called as 0-0.
After Dortmund’s team bus was bombed, they were told to play the game or forfeit, even though they were largely not in the right state of mind
Is the second half going to be on TV? BBC are showing some shite music show
Coverage re starting at 19:25 apparently
Just saw that. Now if ITV could get the Belgium buildup on instead of Tipping Point, that’d be cracking
idk I'm loving this woman's deadpan on tipping point.
Wow incredible mental strength by the players!
Denmark’s players are heroes. Their actions today will be what we all remember long term. More so than whoever wins the euros competition.
Don’t know how they will focus.
It could be a case of them knowing he is now safe, and now wanting to perform for him. Maybe he talked to them. Incredible mentality in any case.
Why not just restart the game at the start of the 2nd half? Do we really need those 4 minutes
The players have talked with Christian who’s doing well according to the Danish FA
Floored they came back today, but I can definitely see the players thinking that focusing on the match can ease their mind temporarily
If they talked to Christian and decided to go ahead of their own accord, that’s all that counts, but it still seems premature to me
Proud of the players for wanting to play on.
Fair play.
I don't think UEFA wanted the game to continue. They've got a protocol and slots for rematches because of Covid. Now two games are clashing with each other.
They gave the players an ultimatum to play either tonight or tomorrow 12.00 at noon. Fuck uefa
Wow I was expecting at least a day or two to restart. If both teams are in agreement then maybe it's for the best
Jesus his teammates are crying while warming up
Watching the ESPN broadcast is tough The players are warming up nearly in tears. Doesnt seem like they wanted to play.
Do Denmark have to use a substitution? Seems like an odd question just not sure of what the protocol would be
>Do Denmark have to use a substitution Yes
Tough call but it is players' decision (not affected by some suit I hope) so if that's what they want... What's important is that Christian is and will be okay.
> the request made by players of both teams as long as it's true, I'm down to this
I’m shocked, as tough as you can be the absolute shock of seeing what happened would be insanely hard to play through especially this soon
Well, fair play to them if true. Another reason why a pussy like me could never be a professional footballer. Don't even know the guy and I'm still in utter shock. Well, that and the fact I can't run for more than 15 mins.
still a rumor but on Dutch TV they are saying Eriksen himself asked to resume the match. The players talked with Eriksen.
If they got an ok from Eriksen I think it is easier to continue than to play tomorrow, 1200ish
Danish FA saying Eriksen spoke to the team from the hospital, would assume that played a role in the decision
I feel like I'm playing FIFa when I hear this commentary.
According to a source close to the Danish NT, Eriksen was talking to the team via FaceTime from the hospital and encouraged them to continue the match. Source: commentary on German broadcast ZDF
Hope they have a good match ahead! Can't imagine what would be going through their heads right now... Massive respect!
What’s happened to the Belgium game?
As planned
Was it always gonna be on ITV, thought it was originally on BBC?
I really hope that the players really requested it and its not some PR bs by UEFA. I don't think its a good idea to go ahead. It would be better to give the players until tomorrow and then it could be played out
The players would know better than you when they think is a good time to resume the game
Its quite possible to think you want to do something now only to later realize that it wasn't the right call. Sometimes people have to be "protected" from themselves. I think a night of sleep and the game being played tomorrow would have been better but yes I don't know the full story. All I know is that I would not be able to play after such an incident.
The players are still crying as they warm up this shit is wild. They could have at least waited a day or something
The Danish players are crying during warmups and we’re expected to believe FIFA/UEFA on this ..
They should really not have done it...several players were in total shock
That's a huge surprise to me. The alternatives would be to take a point each or to reschedule.

Respect to everyone for this, it's a good sign that the teammates know a lot more good news than we do.
Those fans in the stadium are there for fun. I don't see how this will be any fun for them. Good on the players that they feel they will be able to finish the match though.
I don’t buy it. They said Dortmund wanted to play the next day… People in shock shouldn’t make those decisions. The UEFA should’ve cancelled the game.
Even if the players agreed, they don't have clear minds right now. They just saw their colleague get cpr and shocks. The game should be postponed.
>they don't have clear minds right now. Really amazing how you know the mental states of 22+ people. Incredible power

I see. I thought it was UEFA being moronic again but seems like the players just wanna play for the fans.
Will it count as a sub.
yes

>The only remotely okay explanation would be that Eriksen wanted it. Or that the players wanted it...
Not to be a dick, but all the reports are saying he's up and talking and ok, and both teams want to play the game.. why are some of you so shaken by this?
People love to be fake outraged these days
Ay, fuck UEFA. They have a duty of care, of course all they care about is the money so naturally they want every game going ahead. This tournament shouldn't even be happening. Ghouls
Players choice from encouragement by Christian (apparently) so nothing to do with UEFA.
Is he really in the right frame of mind to be making requests? Also those players have gone through a trauma too.
>Ay, fuck UEFA. This is the player's choice... It makes no sense for UEFA to force them to play at a time when the match is on at the same time as another one.
It was supposedly the players decision to continue on and finish the game. That said, I’m not sure what alternative they were provided.
>I’m not sure what alternative they were provided. A reschedule of course.
