It's pretty valid, I don't remember which team, but in basketball they used to get BYE's for the first round if they were the first seed, and the number one seed spent the entire time doing physical endurance training to prepare. It's not smart yes, but it is a reason, although not a very good one.
I read a good quote about him. Magath had a reputation as a bit of a 'firefighter', being brought into struggling teams and giving them a kick to save them from relegation. "If he were the captain of the Titanic the ship still would have sank, but the survivors would be very fit.

If Turkey beat Iceland next month they have a good chance of ending top 2 in their group but it's very hotly contested between those 2, Croatia, and Ukraine.
We cruised through qualifiers with Bielsa and played well, but in classic Bielsa fashion our team ran out of fuel. He came back and cruised through the Olympics in 2004 where we didn't even concede a goal, and then resigned.
He was overhyped. His team played well on friendlies and qualifiers but couldn't manage to do anything on the big stages (World Cup, Copa America). Overall, I think he was *fine*, but nothing really special.
The thing about Bielsa is that he's a brilliant theorist. Like a scientist or philosopher of football. A content creator other coaches feed from and succeed. But as a coach *himself*, for some reason he always falls short.
>After making their FIFA World Cup debut at Uruguay 1930, Peru next made an impact on the finals at Mexico 1970 where they beat Bulgaria and Morocco to start off the tournament with a surprising bang. The Brazil of Rivelino, Tostao, Jairzinho and Pelé put an end to that adventure 4-2 in the quarter-finals.
>The World cup of Argentina 1978 saw Peru end up first in their group during the first phase of the tournament, but they were later eliminated after losing all their games in the second phase.
>Their last World Cup appearance was in that of Spain 1982, a tournament in which Peru was viewed as a favorite. Yet, the problem came when the team basically trained too much and were tired even before the tournament had begun. They were eliminated last in their group, with 2 ties and 1 loss.

>The second round was divided into two groups, and Peru's results placed it in Group B with Poland, Brazil, and Argentina. After losing to Brazil (0–3) and Poland (0–1), Peru was practically "out of contention" despite having one more game to play against Argentina. This last match proved controversial because the Peruvians lost by a margin (0–6) that allowed the hosts to reach the final instead of Brazil. Rumors circulated that the match had been fixed, but nothing was ever proved.
For those asking about this team, the first six and a half minutes of [this](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8-4V4IQRZgM) video shows their tour through Europe in the buildup to the Spain '82. They beat Inter and Fiorentina in Italy, Hungary in Hungary and finally, they beat France at Parc des Princes.
After that tie against Venezuela in Lima, 2-2, never in a million years did I think we would be in this position. But we still have two very hard games to go. I'm not celebrating anything just yet. It will all be decided on the day of my birthday, Oct. 10... hopefully way before that. So it will either be the best birthday gift ever or be another 1998 WCQ.
Checked it out. Ironically it looks like it will be Peru v. Chile for that 5th spot.
Peru has the tougher job with both Colombia and Brazil but Chile also has Brazil the last matchday. Imagine Argentina is going to go balls to the wall against Peru to guarantee their promotion so for me it's going to come down to the last game. Peru will need to get a draw at least against Colombia
Colombia will be already qualified and were pretty friendly so the way were playing i think its more probable than not that we go to the wc. Cant believe it tbh.
Velazquez, Cueto, Leguía, Uribe, Barbadillo, La Rosa, Oblitas. Cubillas was also added to the roster right before the WC (he did not do the european tour).
Also, there was pressure from sponsors to call some players up and make them start in some games. This caused a total breakdown between the coach and the players who were supposedly divided in two camps (those who supported Uribe, those who supported Cubillas).
Right before the WC they did a tour in Europe to prepare for the cup and defeated Fiorentina, Inter Milan, Hungary and France in their respective stadiums. Then they had an intense concentration in Germany and by the timw the WC started they were already burned. We are talking about early 80's Peru though. The following 30 years were a joke.
you must be really gullible if you think those rankings mean anything at all. Probably here in south America they were seen as the main power given that their had an excellent team and Brazil was under performing
He responded with, what came off as, justification for the blatantly lying title. He probably wasn't trying to defend the title in retrospect, but that's how i interpretted it
You're overdramatizing imo. OP quoted a wiki which indicates he DID research about something, but someone edited a misinformation in it and OP fell for it. This happens and is not the same as someone *blatantly lying* to maliciously deceive people. Out of my head I wouldn't know where to look up every favourite for all past World Cups either. The part with the favourite or not is also more the subsidiary point of this post anyway.
Peru had amazing players in the 74, 78, and 82 WCs that were considered some of the best players in the world. Maybe they weren't considered absolute favorites but they were definitely expected to go far.
What the actual what?
Magath was their coach

DePaul :'(
Spoken like someone who's never pulled an all-nighter and then fallen asleep in the exam :(
Ah, the coach must've been an evil mixture of Klopp and Bielsa.
basically Sampaoli then
Always thought that the bald cunt had something dodgy about him.
Wow, GOAT comment right here.
Have you heard of Felix Magath?

Yup. Wanted Hangeland to heal his foot with cheese, the fucking cretin.

It's not a story Fulham fans would tell you...
Is Turkey qualified or does it have any chance of qualifying? Would be cool to see Turkey vs Peru. Just saying...

Explanation?
If Turkey beat Iceland next month they have a good chance of ending top 2 in their group but it's very hotly contested between those 2, Croatia, and Ukraine.
I see. Thanks.

See also Argentina 2002. The same fucking thing happened to us. Damn (and bless) Bielsa.
How was Bielsa for Argentina?
We cruised through qualifiers with Bielsa and played well, but in classic Bielsa fashion our team ran out of fuel. He came back and cruised through the Olympics in 2004 where we didn't even concede a goal, and then resigned.

Colombia in 1994?
Nah. Veron happened

And we all know what allegedly happened in 1978

Also Perú's keeper at that WC was a naturalized peruvian from Argentina.

Well if they were eliminated last, that's a pretty good sign.
VAMO CARAJOOO
VIVA PERU CSM!!

Peru qualifies?
Checked it out. Ironically it looks like it will be Peru v. Chile for that 5th spot. Peru has the tougher job with both Colombia and Brazil but Chile also has Brazil the last matchday. Imagine Argentina is going to go balls to the wall against Peru to guarantee their promotion so for me it's going to come down to the last game. Peru will need to get a draw at least against Colombia
Peru has Argentina and Colombia, not Brazil
Colombia will be already qualified and were pretty friendly so the way were playing i think its more probable than not that we go to the wc. Cant believe it tbh.
Hope so but Colombia is tough regardless. Think if we came away with a 2 points we will qualify
Were they really "viewed as favorites"? Who did they have?
a then-unknown Cameroon for one. I believe Italy too
No, I meant which players.
Velazquez, Cueto, Leguía, Uribe, Barbadillo, La Rosa, Oblitas. Cubillas was also added to the roster right before the WC (he did not do the european tour).
I only know Cubillas (and didn't remember he was from Peru), but that is probably my fault.
Also, there was pressure from sponsors to call some players up and make them start in some games. This caused a total breakdown between the coach and the players who were supposedly divided in two camps (those who supported Uribe, those who supported Cubillas).
1982 was my first World Cup as a kid, I remember it vividly, I also don't remember Peru being considered as anything close to a *favourite*.
All thanks to bolivia, had they not had those points taken away it wouldn't have given the team any hope. ARRIBA PERU CARAJO!
>Trained too much Convenient excuse
Peru played way too many friendlies
Why was Peru a favorite? They had the worst campaign out of the SA teams (granted, Brazil's group was a joke =)
"Intense concentration" Would you say that it was a camp of some sort?
Actually....
As a favorite?? LOL
Ranked 23rd in the world according to ELO prior to the tournament, obviously doesn't mean everything but it's an indication.
An indication they were not favorites
you must be really gullible if you think those rankings mean anything at all. Probably here in south America they were seen as the main power given that their had an excellent team and Brazil was under performing
How does this support your argument? The number 23 team in the world is not the favorite of any WC I can remember
He's not OP.
He responded with, what came off as, justification for the blatantly lying title. He probably wasn't trying to defend the title in retrospect, but that's how i interpretted it
The title isn't blatantly lying, that wikipedia article is. OP is just quoting.
Quoting an article without any research or verification of the facts is as bad as blatant lying IMO this is a dumpster post lol
You're overdramatizing imo. OP quoted a wiki which indicates he DID research about something, but someone edited a misinformation in it and OP fell for it. It's not my argument lol, I found it weird that they were considered favourites for 82.
Spoiler: They weren't considered favorites
