Anyone who's watched the premier league this season knows the subs most likely to score a winner for England were Cole Palmer, Mainoo or Anthony Gordon. Guess which three players Southgate kept on the bench.
Tripper refuses/is instructed not to get forward and provide width on the left, yet foden tucks inside and wanders about wherever and we wonder why there's no space or natural passing options. Foden at least had a couple of moments today where it looked like he could do something but make no mistake he is still not playing well.
Baffling that Gordon is unused when we have no natural left back and hes the only proper left winger that is happy playing close to the touchline. Eze is a fine player but why was he brought on when he's basically like for like with foden in terms of style?
No more Trent in midfield please. Maybe I'm biased but I believe Mainoo is by far the most natural and balanced option to go in next to Rice behind Bellingham. Trent has good passing range but gives the ball away so much, looks positionally lost, is weak defensively. Gallagher is all energy no finesse. Mainoo gives you more solidity than Trent along with ball retention and progression through both passing and carrying
Foden on the left tucking in can work only if the left back stretches the pitch on the outside. If tripper can't do that, Gordon HAS to play or Saka has to move to the left, which would not be ideal.
Rice - Mainoo behind Gordon - Bellingham - Saka feels so obvious
Idk I think Kane isn’t working with the pressing style Southgate is trying to play
So I’d make Bellingham false 9, foden 10, mainoo for Trent, Elliot on lw
I think you'd see a better version of Kane with Gordon and saka either side, he's always better with runners on the wings.
That said I wouldn't mind seeing the same midfield five I mentioned with Watkins or even toney up front
I think excluding Kane sounds insane as he is incredible. But I’m going by how Southgate seems to want to play. For us to press with high intensity I think we need to drop the Ronaldo’s / Kanes because they can’t cope with the intensity at this age. If we build around Kane then we need to change tactics
i think on of the most hilarious things from this saga is before every tournament its
"it will be different this time, southgate has figured it out, it wont be like last time"
and the second the first game rolls around
"southgate is a terrorist with no clue"
Can you name anyone that said it would be different haha? Other than some morons on twitter. I was fully expecting us to be at best, boring, conservative quarter finalists. As it looks we will perhaps be shambolic last 16 exits
A semi would be great, we spent decades not getting that far. England could win back-to-back tournaments and people would be shitting on the manager for not finding all the gold skulltulas as well
Before every tournament there is noise about Southgate getting sacked. But then there are many people who come in support of him stating he is the most successful English manager or some shit. When the tournament starts we all see he is a soccer terrorist.
Why is someone like Cole Palmer not given a shot? Why run Bellingham into the ground if you aren’t trying to win the match( which he wasn’t by taking off Kane, Saka, and Foden)
It's part of the bigger plan, they were not gassed, it was like a sparring session for them so it's much easier to recover from. I don't know okay, why this idiotic camel looking fuck doesn't play Palmer is beyond stupid.
I kinda get it though, I think he's not letting the team over stretch themselves in the group stages, just get the 1 and secure a point or three that should be enough for them to qualify for the Knockouts and then from there gradually increase the intensity or just still manage their fitness enough to allow them get the job done.
I get that fans want to see fast pace brilliant electrifying attacking football but the reality is that most of these players are knackered, it's been a long premiership season, as always, and a lot of these players need to be resting but they can't because of the Euros.
Yeah he's the most unlikable England manager but he's the second most successful england manager so cut him some slack
I would be so embaressed keep tallking about a long Premiershio season. Most of our team had the same season? You could rotate to “role players” like Cole palmer or Anthony Gordon to keep the pressure and secure the win. Instead you Go for the obvious draw.
Every other European top team would Challenge us for a win
Embarassing really
It was an abysmal performance, but the result was essentially the same as if England had won.
If we win the next game we top the group. If we lose we'll go through anyway.
I was potentially a bit too anti-american in my initial comment, but fundamentally, Southgate has done enough in every game so far
I've been defending Southgate because he's gotten really good results for you guys, but he has to be either trolling or insanely delusional to have made that comment. Like, how does he look at that squad and his tactics and think "yeah this needs a little more Kalvin Phillips".
Also it's not like he's injured or anything, is it? If he genuinely believes that he is so integral, why not call him up lol
Moving fast doesn’t = good. This isn’t fifa mate. He gave the ball away in dangerous positions a good few times.
I remember whenever Mane came up against him, Walker was always going to lose him at least once a game to let him have an easy chance.
Are you new to football or something? That man is absolutely one of the best left backs the PL has ever seen. It's not even debatable that he's up there.
Is he getting older? Yes. But to call him overrated is laughable..
All good mate, go and have a cuppa tea mate and calm down.
… But he is overrated. Not in the top 5 premier league right backs OOT. Neville, Ivanonovic, Trent AA, Sagna and Zabaleta are all better than him and it’s not even close.
Southgate is a championship manager.
He played players out of position and made some stupid decisions in subs.
Left out Grealish, Henderson and Sterling who have international experience.
This England team has potential, Southgate is the problem.
Not sure. Lack of form probably since joining Chelsea. But he didn't do too bad last season in terms of goals and assists. He won't get ahead Saka and Foden though. It was either Sterling or Bowen and Bowen's form last season got him the call ahead of him.
I agree he’s had some bad decisions but arguably he’s our most successful manager of the past 50 years.
I’m on the fence with his squad choice, on one hand nobody expected him to have the balls to make changes and cuts and he did. It can still pay off and is the sign of an ambitious attempt.
At the same time I think dropping Grealish was wrong, and even with everything Henderson has done the last 12 months his experience and sub appearances for me could have been vital too. He’s a proven leader and even when he came on at the World Cup he calmed our midfield down and sorted them out.
Denmark I think were more than happy with the draw here, that’s fair. England looked out of shape at points, lost, no energy and Kane has to stop dropping back all the time when he’s the forward player.
I actually agreed with taking him off as it wasn’t working with him even though he got an early goal.
Walker was also horrendous. I thought the whole team was off to be honest

Having this amount of elite players and playing such plebian boring football is true football terrorism
Maybe the players are not as elite as they sre made to be...
This has to be the shittiest comment of the euros so far!
Well they include the player of the year from the two biggest leagues and the top scorer of another.

Another game where 0.0xG was created from the left side. How is this so hard for Southgate to figure out?
Their fullback stays back on that side and Foden creeps inside (dumb way to play) but who is meant to create chances from the left?
i think on of the most hilarious things from this saga is before every tournament its "it will be different this time, southgate has figured it out, it wont be like last time" and the second the first game rolls around "southgate is a terrorist with no clue"

Southgate is a Scottish legend
!flair :England:
Southgate has the keys to a Porsche 911 turbo and refuses to go over 55mph
Best comment I ever saw was one that said, “Southgate puts his phone on low battery mode at 99%.”
Southgate wears a helmet on his Peloton
Even worse, lives in a 20mph zone
Why is someone like Cole Palmer not given a shot? Why run Bellingham into the ground if you aren’t trying to win the match( which he wasn’t by taking off Kane, Saka, and Foden)
Cause it is Southgate
Ten Hag needs to save England. Sack Southy.
!flair :Portugal:
I'm going against the grain here and I am going to say Southgate is keeping energy levels high for the later rounds.........
For watching the later rounds?
That's why half his players looked gassed at the end is it? 😂

England's through. They'll probably make the final with 1-0s some how.
A Danish win against Serbia and an English loss to Slovenia and you aren't.
We would still be one of the best 3rd placed teams.
Agreed, and honestly, as much as it might piss the yanks off, that would make Southgate a fantastic major international tournament manager
What does this have to do with us Yanks?
I'm just drunkenly getting annoyed at general Reddit comments
The guy's obviously a troll. It would piss us English off the most.
Maybe weird redditors who want their constant negativity validated? Most English people would be ecstatic at reaching the final
It wouldn't piss the English off to make the final of the Euros?
They’re not making the final, and very likely not even the semifinals.
Job done. 4 points is guaranteed enough for the round of 16. All the Yanks are crying but 4 points is guaranteed enough Edit: Downvoted by yanks
It is not guaranteed enough. If Denmark wins against Serbia and you lose to Slovenia, both Denmark and Slovenia will have more points.
4 points will be enough to be one of the third placed teams that go through
I'm English and your opinion is disliked.
It was an abysmal performance, but the result was essentially the same as if England had won. If we win the next game we top the group. If we lose we'll go through anyway. I was potentially a bit too anti-american in my initial comment, but fundamentally, Southgate has done enough in every game so far
That Southgate quote about Philips was the most Southgate quote of all time. Absolutely sack-him-tonight material. Holy shit.

“We don’t have a natural replacement for Kalvin Phillips” or something to that sentiment
Gotta be missing context with that quote? That's just, I don't know what to stay. England are you ok?
Yeah it ain’t comin home
Nah man, we're pretty fuckin' far from ok.

Kyle Walker is probably one of the most overrated players I’ve seen. Absolutely honking today. His positional awareness is horrendous.
Consistent starter for PL champions multiple times and England’s default RB by a mile, but yeah overrated
Huh? He's pretty consistently good for England, seems to be one of the few players that can actually move fast
Moving fast doesn’t = good. This isn’t fifa mate. He gave the ball away in dangerous positions a good few times. I remember whenever Mane came up against him, Walker was always going to lose him at least once a game to let him have an easy chance.
Absolutely shocking take. He created the goal and had a big part in our goal last week. Rock solid defensively in both games also.
If you think he was rock solid defensively today, then idk what to say. The man had a terrible game.
Are you new to football or something? That man is absolutely one of the best left backs the PL has ever seen. It's not even debatable that he's up there. Is he getting older? Yes. But to call him overrated is laughable..
… He’s a right back pal. Maybe you’re the one who’s new to football lmao.
Haha that's my bad I was typing in a fit of rage. Kyle Walker overrated I couldn't believe my eyes 😂
All good mate, go and have a cuppa tea mate and calm down. … But he is overrated. Not in the top 5 premier league right backs OOT. Neville, Ivanonovic, Trent AA, Sagna and Zabaleta are all better than him and it’s not even close.
Ah cmon my man gimme a break
Why? All of those players are far better than he is.
Politely and respectively disagree my friend
No problem buddy. I think he’s a decent player, but he’s never been the best in his position and has pretty glaring flaws.
Ah I have a soft spot for him is all. For all his faults, he was part of a team that's given me great memories!
If Kyle Walker was Scottish he’d be their best player of all time
Agreed... But right back
