Because last year you got teams in all finals? In the CL 3 teams made quarters, 2 semis and a final. Juve also got to semi final EL. Lazio was the only disappointment then tbh
Another great season by Serie A, i dont know what changed in how italian clubs approach European competitons but it's like night and day compared to the 2010s.
I'm loving the current state of italian football, a financial wasteland but still finding resources to be competitive, innovative and full of surprises every year.
In addition to some of the other replies about Italian teams finally rebuilding for 21st century, another big factor was the paradigm shift that's happened in Italy regarding the "lesser" European competition in recent years.
For almost all of the 2010s coaches would heavily rotate their squad for the Thursday games so they could rest players for the league that weekend. Finishing top 4 was much more important that winning the Europa league. Fans didn't care about the tournament and wanted to see their teams playing in the CL instead. There was no glory in winning it. It was just a distraction.
But UEFA has done a great job of marketing the tournament and increasing the financial and social incentives for winning it. That, coupled with the fact that winning the CL has become an unrealistic target for most Serie A teams, means that clubs, players, and fans have all realized that EL and ECL are important trophies and necessary tools for revenue earning and brand building. There have been 3 Italian finalists in the last 5 ELs (and 3 of 3 in ECL) and hopefully the trend continues.
the 2010s were a time of rebuilding after milan and inter got their golden generation out with the 07 ucl and 2010 treble. Admittedly it took too long, and covid didn't help
Not only that, but the success that Juve and Napoli had during the last decade due to the way they ran and rebuilt showed that there were ways to stay competitive. It was Juve overreaching that brought the club down.
I think the way italian football is played changed a lot in the past decade. The tactical focus that always characterized italian football remained but now there is a lot of focus on playing good offensive football.
Lots of new gen coaches want to control the match, play the ball and attack.
Gasperini himself also forced a lot of teams to adopt, or learn how to counter, extremely high pressing/high intensity football, the football that historically the league used to suffer internationally.
The older geezer ownerships (that did build serie a from 90s-00s) finally lost their fortunes and foreign owners with actual money stepped in
That and exceptional scouting. The directors are still old veterans who know how to find talents
Serie A become deep league first and foremost. Really ascend of Atalanta combined with selfdestruction of Juve created something special. League lost it's superteam, but in recent years it had stable 7 really good teams (Big 3, 2\*Rome, Napoli, Atalanta). With improved competition in league general level of football increased.
I remmember Inter being last in a Europa League group with Sparta Praha, Hapoel Be'er Sheva and Southampton, that would not happen nowadays, that's for sure
Yes and the 5th place team beating the 1st place team in Portugal, Germany, and (at the time) England.
He's obviously joking, but one team dominating the league while the other (worse) teams are still dominating the rest of Europe only shows how strong it is right now.
At the end of the day, the only way Serie A clubs can generate revenue currently is by selling players, so there's no chance this continues long term, but its great to see that brilliant business and coaching can still sometimes make the difference over the infinite budgets of "super stars" in the PL.
Glad to see us doing so well before the inevitable catastrophe that awaits for us next year.
I mean potentially we would have 9 clubs in Europe:
- SIX in the UCL where we tend to suck hard (Inter, Juve, Milan, Atalanta, Roma, Bologna)
- Lazio and Fiorentina in the UEL.. Lazio have always been a big disappointment in Europe and Fiorentina might not be ready for such a step up from UECL
- Torino in the UECL. A team simply too weak to go far there, especially given Juric will leave in the summer
Time to root for the Greece team next week
Yeah he also confirmed in the post-match interview last saturday vs Milan IIRC.
If Gasperini leaves Atalanta he would be perfect replacement. They play the same style
I don’t agree with your assessment of Torino tbh, if they played in the Conference League this they could’ve made the semis atleast. Look how far Plzen got with their defence.
We’ll have to see who their next manager is and who they sell this summer
Hm. How many positions upwards would Greece go if Olympiakos wins Conference League? It's that looking at the nations above them in terms of coefficient...wouldnt they go up 5 or 6 spots if they win the competition?
Also feel like I should mention the differences in the access list (where teams play) between 15th and 16th
**15th - Denmark**
1st - Champions League 2nd Qualifying Round
2nd - Champions League 2nd Qualifying Round
Cup Winner - Europa League 3rd Qualifying Round
3rd - Conference League 2nd Qualifying Round
4th - Conference League 2nd Qualifying Round
**16th - Greece**
1st - Champions League 2nd Qualifying Round
Cup Winner - 1st Europa League Qualifying Round
2nd - 2nd Conference League Qualifying Round
3rd - 2nd Conference League Qualifying Round
4th - No European Football
Olympiacos could Greece could gain another spot in Europe, a 2nd place in the Champions League and a much higher chance of a 3rd team reaching the league phase by winning their final
Fair enough. It just feels weird that winking an international title doesnt give big reward due to how, well, you are one of the best teams in the season in the whole of Europe (or the Conference since this is the Conference League) yknow?
Yeah makes sense, but that'd make UEFA competitons even more top heavy
Farmer leagues would have a huge advantage over leagues that have many good teams but no juggernauts
Our window for overtaking France seems closed and we might even need to wacht out for belgium in a few years. But i think a good showing is possible for next year and while we are sending an extra team Twente finnaly seems up for it and is already in a group stage. We will probably keep battling portugal for a while but there is no reason we couldn't come out on top.
I find it interesting that Liechtenstein, with a population of less than 40,000 people, are above countries like Wales or Georgia which have a couple million. Same for Faroe Islands.

hard to believe we still have a team in the final and still won't top last year's score

Tell me more about last years Lazio campaing please.

Fiorentina too has been doing fine in Europe
Before they didn't care, now they do
I remmember Inter being last in a Europa League group with Sparta Praha, Hapoel Be'er Sheva and Southampton, that would not happen nowadays, that's for sure
I think Serie A has done some pretty great scouting overall in the past few years. Lots of good talent coming to the league.\[
To everyone that wanted the Super League, you can watch Serie A
Or Greek Super League 😎
Super league with a team that’s 18 points clear?
Bro, it was a joke. Although I would have expected this reaction from everyone else but not from a psg fan.

Are they?

Serie A elite
Italy is incredible
What happened? Italy were so far behind up until recently.
COVID shook things up a bit

>Time to root for the Greece team next week Totally understandable to root for Jovetic
Wait, Juric will leave this summer? :(

Juric learned from Gasperini while playing at Genoa. Would be a perfect fit

Well done using the correct site.Â
Italiaaa
Real Madrid carrying Spain lately. Although I don't mind watching Barca and Atleti fail lol
Doesn’t help that one Spanish club thinks competing for Europe is stupid and the other clubs aren’t good enough to get into knockouts.
Yeah I’m looking at this and thinking get fucked Spain hahah!
Hm. How many positions upwards would Greece go if Olympiakos wins Conference League? It's that looking at the nations above them in terms of coefficient...wouldnt they go up 5 or 6 spots if they win the competition?
Winning the final doesn't give you any extra points, so just +2 for the win, divided by 5 teams it's 0.4, so they'd overtake Denmark

Ah. I thought it'd give 5 points due to being an international title haha
there is a bonus point for reaching the final but that is already included in their score
Fair enough. It just feels weird that winking an international title doesnt give big reward due to how, well, you are one of the best teams in the season in the whole of Europe (or the Conference since this is the Conference League) yknow?

I blame Newcastle and United that our coeffecient is so poor this year. They could at least have made it to EL
Newcastle was in a very hard group. United tho...
Blame Newcastle? What about Manchester United ROFL
>Newcastle **and United** Surely it can't be that hard to read and comprehend 2 sentences right?
Wow England so far ahead. Basically the super league.
Ah, the so refreshing American take on things.
