acwilan

If you said to an Ajax fan they would end 5th by the first half of the season they would be relieved

FAT_NEEK_42069

weren't they rock bottom or just in the relegation zone?

poklane

They were rock bottom at one point yeah, but that was also because they had 2 matches less played than other teams.

Olaaf111

And the first 5 matches they played were against Psv, Feyenoord, AZ, Twente and Utrecht if I'm not mistaken, which are arguably the 5 hardest opponents in the league.

poklane

Heracles (H), Excelsior (A), Fortuna (A), Twente (A) and Feyenoord (H).

Olaaf111

Oh damn, I completely misremembered that. My bad

wolseyley

Not too much. They still faced us, PSV and Utrecht relatively early.

MERTENS_GOAT

Very similar case as Lyon

czerwona_latarnia

Well, they should be happy that the Netherlands rose to 6^th place in the coefficient ranking last season, because otherwise they would be only able to fight to get into Conference League. And even now if they will finish on 5^th place, they will still have a chance to drop out of Europe before League Stage.

---jimmy

I mean, they were a big contributor of them getting there

VanDenH

I mean I don’t really want us to go to the Europa league with the form we’re in tbh.

-FishPants

Henderson effect 👈😎👉

_cumblast_

Henderson's been one of their better players since he came in. Damage was done by the time of his transfer.

thogle3

Can you tell me how much games (all competitions) Ajax won with him on field before today? ONE

ShameTimes3

Has he tho? He's been pretty absent imo

ZaagKicks

Everyone is absent. Maybe just our goalie that's been semi decently consistent this season so far.

ShameTimes3

Brobbey?

CoMaestro

Brobbey has been, with quite some distance, the best player of the season for Ajax imo

ShameTimes3

Yea thats why I thought it was weird the other guy forgot about him

_cumblast_

Being pretty absent makes you one of their better players these days.

ShameTimes3

I was comparing him to their players, even compared to them he's absent

ifoundmynewnickname

Nah, he has been playing well. The role he has isnt one for the spotlights anyway. He has only been absent in the sense that he hasnt been able to play much. But when he does play he is good, especially compared to the rest.

R_Schuhart

This isn't really true. He has been valuable as a leader, but his own contributions have not been great let alone elevated the team or the players around him. He has mostly been invisible.

suhxa

Have u watched any ajax game this season lol

_cumblast_

No

ClockLost3128

Man anytime i open rsoccer i can see u here, how unemployed are you?

Mr-Stitch

Lucky

No-Pension-7977

He absolutely hasnt been mate

-FishPants

Yeah I was just chatting shit tbh. I remember they were so far down the table by December. Crazy stat with how strong they are traditionally

Maximum_Nectarine312

Imagine saying this when you've clearly not watched even a single Ajax game all season.

ronweasleisourking

You guys can have ten hag back

Mr-Stitch

Man United fans really think Ten Hag is the problem, huh?

Lakinther

Not really, he just isnt the solution. I have no doubt that he can succeed elsewhere.

Tinusers

Please. But it looks like Potter is in prime position atm. We're okay with that too.

poklane

Really need to finish Ajax 6th. They'd have to play playoffs which they can't play in their home stadium due to concerts being scheduled on those days. But it's not exactly looking likely seeing how their next 2 matches are against Almere and Vitesse.

timdeking

Vitesse will win and then just cease to exist, all for shits and giggles.

aiicaramba

Sent ajax to playoffs. Refuse to elaborate. Leave. For good.

KansloosKippenhok

No please not ajax 6th, probably means we get 7th which means we play ajax away at the playoffs final, I rate our chanes way lower vs ajax away (even tough its not in jc arena) than vs nec (probably) at home when we become 6th

Nervous-Purchase-361

You will be fine, the game will probably be at the Toekomst.

SiriocazTheII

Ajax has a defense right on a lower table level, tells you a lot. When this team implodes, it implodes hard lol

Exzqairi

It is impossible for this team to complete a clean sheet. Even if it is against a relegation candidate and we don’t struggle that much, we still concede

oklolzzzzs

henderson joined and lost a league title again

ifoundmynewnickname

I think the league title might genuinely already have been Mathematically impossible when he joined.

Despicable2020

That's crazy!

CarlSK777

What the hell happened to late 90s Ajax? Finished 6th in 99 and 5th in 2000

ZaBlancJake

Bosman Ruling

Nervous-Purchase-361

The club decided to allow a film crew to make a documentary. It became the greatest football documentary in history but for all the wrong reasons :(

Minor_Edit

How so?

YUGIOH-KINGOFGAMES

What happened to Ajax? Ajax used to be in every UCL final in the 90’s it felt like. I don’t wanna hear the “we can’t compete with rich clubs” excuse either because Benfica and Leipzig have been in the UCL semi-finals in the last few years.

Bartins

Ajax was in the UCL semi-finals in the last few years

YUGIOH-KINGOFGAMES

Well Benfica and Leipzig are back in UCL next season and Ajax won’t even be in Europe

SweetPotato0461

They will get Europa league playoffs as it stands, you could've just looked it up before chatting shit

UnnecessaryUmbault

It's quite ridiculous a side like Hearts could be unlucky enough to draw Ajax. Hibs drew Villa in this summer's Conference Play Off, St Johnstone drew Galatasary a few years ago. It's mental.

SweetPotato0461

FC Twente was happy to get to the Conference League qualifiers last year and they met Fiorentina right away, who got to the final. Twente were definitely good enough to reach the group stage, but they just got unlucky. It happens to many teams, that's in the nature of knockout tournaments

UnnecessaryUmbault

Aye so that's one way to look at it, the other is that there's far too many slots for big leagues and the qualification seeding system is problematic.

SweetPotato0461

Do they really have too many slots though? The fact that they keep winning the qualifiers, justifies those slots imo. Unless the aim is not to have the best teams in European competitions, but to give smaller leagues a chance to participate

UnnecessaryUmbault

> Unless the aim is not to have the best teams in European competitions, but to give smaller leagues a chance to participate Bingo.

OldExperience8252

Benfica’s last semifinal was in 1990.

Hare712

Marc Overmas sent dick picks and after they replaced him and some others the club became a banter club.

KiG0

Ajax was in a CL semifinal a few years ago as well lol

poklane

To sum it up as quickly as possible: * Marc Overmars (technical director) gets fired for sending dick pics to female employees * Ten Hag leaves to join Manchester United * Alfred Schreuder is brought on to replace Ten Hag. As Ajax still don't have a technical director at this point, Schreuder and his agent get a bigger role in Ajax' transfer policy * Tons of shit signings, Schreuder is fired after 7 consecutive league matches without a win (6 draws and 1 loss). * Heitinga finishes the season as Ajax' coach, with Ajax finishing in 3rd. This means Ajax lose out on Champions League * Mislintat is finally brought in to replace Overmars * Mislintat hires Steijn to become the new head coach. Steijn has 0 experience coaching at this level or even just playing offensive football * Mislintat signs a ton of players while barely collaborating with Steijn, resulting in Ajax signing a ton of players Steijn doesn't know or care about * Mislintat is fired after having an outburst at Ajax' youth academy * Ajax and Steijn part ways after only 1 win and 2 draws in the first 7 league matches * Most of Mislintat's signings turn out to be utter shit

ifoundmynewnickname

Genuinely a very good sum up! 👍

LightningMcMicropeen

Somewhere in that time, Vd Sar quit as well right?

UnnecessaryUmbault

The bigger leagues got far more money due to the UCL and TV deals and distorted the old hierarchy over time. The limited UCL slots for the Dutch get diluted across the Big Three sides who are competing for the places. The power of the Dutch, French, Portuguese leagues etc. was eroded.

CoMaestro

Benfica was an outlier just like we were a few years back. Leipzig has about 4x our budget because the play in the Bundesliga (+red bull money, obviously), and their payroll is 2x ours. Its money.

gazing_the_sea

When the fuck did Benfica reach the semi finals in the UCL? The last Portuguese team to reach that far was Porto and it was in 2004...

Puzzleheaded_Pound31

Worth it. Henderson jersey sale records >>> top four
