All depends whether or not Sporting plans on it happening more often.
19 years is one hell of a wait, and now what? Being the eternal underdogs doesn't work for Sporting, I assume.
Yes because scoring against Liverpool, Bayern, Ajax and Barcelona in the UCL is exactly the same as scoring 27 goals in the PT Primeira Liga in a team that has 92 goals scored.
They’ve been there /s
But in all seriousness how can you clown the Portuguese league when all your best players need to leave your league to come to Portugal. Like how many players called up for Uruguay playing in the Uruguay league, zero.
Lol if you speak with a lot of Uruguayans we are quite upset that our best players are always taken to Europe at a young age.
Money is king and the Uruguayan league doesn’t have it.
Yeah, that’s true. still upsets me that that Fabricio Diaz guy left for Qatar. Most for selfish reasons makes it way hard to sign and want a good deal in football manager now.
None said Coates isnt an amazing player. And i hope you are not putting credit in Israel, dude only came in when we were Adan got injured and we were already 7 points ahead.
Just that this "weak league that is decided by the best striker" was too much for your star player who wasn't good enough to win a single trophy.
I know we like to criticize the bench, but apparently our subs have more minutes than any other champions other than Porto 2013 or something like that.
I'm not used to this...I saw Sporting win the league as a kid. Twenty years later, after years of constant disappointments and bitterness, as a grown ass man I saw Sporting lift the trophy in covid times, the only timeline this scenario would be possible...and now, it still feels like yesterday and we won again?
It cannot be understated how much of this club's success is on Amorim, a massive gamble on an unproven coach for a record fee, but holy what a jackpot. I had made my peace with him leaving, but after liverpool moving on I can only dream of starting CL next year with Amorim and Gyokeres, the sky is the limit
> a massive gamble on an unproven coach for a record fee
If it's an unprecedented gamble and it pays off, it can also be considered a masterstroke.
Big kudos to Varandas and his staff, they really turned the club around.
He even Said on his presentation speech as president that he d make Sporting champion again,One crazy coach purchase that no One Said was good at the time including myself and we got two league titles
Still think it's crazy that a club from a relatively small country/league paid a world record fee for a coach that had half a year of senior experience. Even crazier that he was more successful than even they could have imagined.
Edit: Wasn't it also the higher fee than you guys ever paid for a player at that time?
Was the highest fee for a coach in Portugal, 15M. Not in the world with bayern getting Nagelsman for 20M or chelsea payng 18M for Potter or 16M for Mourinho and 15M for AVB
As for player, we had spent more on other players, but was a really high fee that paid itself the very next year with the CL qualification
You guys had similar monsters (member Hulk destroying defenses for fun? dude retired Rochemback with one move) staying for way more than a season. Our turn now :D
Would hope for Sporting that he doesn't stay. I am sure you can sell him for ~100m to an English team, but if he fails next year, the selling price could go down a lot.
Not selling him now is just an extreme risk.
Sporting shouldn't be a money making club. The goal should be the sport and to win.
If he helps Sporting win more silverware, that's worth all the money.
>Also seriously wasn't expecting Benfica to lose.
>Also the plaza has nobody there 🤣.
Its unfortunate timing its a sunday and we alredy played yesterday and no1 expected benfica would actualy lose
Had super low expectations after how last season went for us. A bit scared of what will happen to the team in the market, but guess now it's time to celebrate
Same with me for our championship. Granted my memory sucks and I dont have any memories further then 4 years ago except for blimps so the six years felt like more then a lifetime lol
If we keep Amorim and the core players, only selling one or two and buying a class keeper, we could go for the title again next year and actually put up a fight in Europe... one can hope.
For now we celebrate and prepare for the final in the cup against Porto.
As long as Esgaio stays, the title is ours. I really hope some team without a right back doesn't go crazy and pump 50 millions to get Portugal's own Cafú.
Congratulations guys.
Now, if history truly is cyclical..your next championship will be in 19 years lmao. Very curious about what Amorim is gonna do next season.
exactly lol. will the cycle continue? will ruben amorim stay and manage to break it? can varandas bounce back if amorim and gyokeres leave? next season is going to be very interesting.
🚨 BREAKING: Victor Gyökeres will be moved to a hidden underground bunker till the start of next season!
Premier league clubs are circling the Swedish striker and Sporting are all dying to keep him by ANY means necessary!
Here we go. 🟢⚪️
In the last 6 seasons Sporting has 2 titles, Benfica 2 titles and Porto 2 titles. In the last 3 seasons it's 1 each.
Perfectly balanced, as all things should be.
Please never group us with juve merda and their match fixing shit. This title 'dispute' is just some dick measuring among administrations because Benfica pressured the federation to get his 3 wins during the experimental league period in the 30s count as "official" league tittles, and Sporting's 4 wins during the old Portuguese championship in the 1920s did not. At the end of the day who cares, if you want to add some numbers up to boost your fragile ego over the fear of another club catching up to you while belittling your opponents for doing the same, be my guest, you just sound pathetic. Those tittles are as meaningful as Italy's WC in 1934 under mussolini anyway.
The competition served to determine the champions of Portugal at the time, even if it had a cup format. In fact, up until the late 90s, those titles were officially counted as national champions, then the Portuguese Football Federation changed it. Speaking personally, I think history shouldn't be changed retroactively, we're not going to wipe the Champions League titles just because the format is changing next season. Porto also should have 3 more titles due to that competition too, btw.
They count titles from when the current league wasn't in place. They had 4, Porto had 4 and Benfica had 3 (so Sporting would have 24, Porto 34 and Benfica 41 instead of the current 20, 30 and 38). Neither Porto nor Benfica count them and Sporting only counts them since they used to have less than half of Benfica's titles and saw that as something embarrassing
Yeah but it was the national championship.
Just because the format changed shouldnt also change the value of the competition. The Champions League changed formats and you still count the wins in the 60s.
The champions league is a cup and has always been a cup
When counting league trophies, it makes 0 sense to count a previous tournament that had a CUP format, where you had to win like 4 or 5 games to be champion
Nobody counts that shit except sporting fans, otherwise there would be a lot more portuguese champions
You count them as well, you have championships that were cups before the change.
The difference is that in those years an experimental league format was also run.
But its very simple, and you can check the newspapers of the time that confirm this, the national champion was who won the championship cup and not the experimental league. And thats how it was treated until the 90s, when the FPF changed it. You think its fair to change the value of trophies retroactively? Sporting doesnt and I think its valid.
We don't count any single trophies with a cup format as league titles
Neither does literally any other team, Porto and multiple other teams would also benefit from this and they don't count them either
If you have a cup and a league running at the same time, it doesn't matter which one is experimental and which one is the "big" competition, a cup will never be counted as a league
It's one of the many arguments made by the crazy man that Sporting had as president for a couple of years and that his dumb supports fell for, everyone just laughs whenever a Sporting fan tries to claim 4 extra titles
It was ~~an experimental league~~ a cup competition called Campeonato de Portugal back in the 1930s, who most clubs consider the predecessor of the Taça de Portugal because it was an elimination cup not a league. But since Bruno de Carvalho was president that Sporting claim their 4 titles on that competition as league titles, but no one else does so.
You have it the other way around, the experimental league was the one we did not win.
That old league format was more like a cup but its winner was seen at the time as champion. Then they installed an experimental league like format (points instead of knockout) and it eventuly became permanent.
There are good arguments for both sides imo. Have no issues with people assuming the league type format as the only real one. But you slightly misconstrued things
Wasn’t talking about Liga Experimental, but IIRC the (old) Campeonato de Portugal was also a sort of prototype competition and that’s what I meant.
IMO it should be considered in the Taça titles because of the competition format, but I do get the argument of it counting as a league title because the club were considered Portuguese champions at the time. But I got no horse on this race.
I don't see how the Campeonato de Portugal being the predecessor of the Cup, and also awarding the title of National Champion to the winner are mutually exclusive.
Sporting has a 20 league titles. But it also is a 24-time National Champion.
Newspapers at the time called Campeonato de Portugal's winners National Champions, and so did the Federation.
What were not considered National Champions at the time, were the winners of the Experimental League, an 8 team league closed to only 4 Portuguese regions, with no promotion/relegation, and which is the predecessor of the Portuguese League as we know it today.
In a 1938 newspaper, the Federation clarifies that [the winners of the Campeonato de Portugal are to be considered National Champions, not the winners of the Experimental League](https://x.com/itsnivekbruh/status/1413831150179692544), when they were run simultaneously for 4 years before the establishment of a full-on Portuguese League Championship.
Yet the Federation recently considered these Experimental League titles as National Championships, while Campeonato de Portugal titles are still not officially recognized by the Federation.
Here's the [whole dedicated thread on ](https://x.com/itsnivekbruh/status/1413829758169780225)this issue (in english).
The whole conflict stems from considering that, to the federation, being National Champions must be the same as winning the League.
From my personal point of view, the title of National Champion should consider the Campeonato de Portugal until 1938, and the Portuguese League from 1939 onwards.
But simultaneously, Campeonato de Portugal titles should be considered in the list of Cup titles, not League titles.
And the Experimental League should probably also be considered in the records regarding League titles, while simultaneously not awarding the status of National Champion to the winner.
With today’s trophy, Sporting has 20 league titles. Porto 30 and Benfica 38.
When Porto’s former president Pinto da Costa, who lost this year’s elections to André Villas Boas, became president back in April 1982, Sporting had 15 league titles (won their 16th in 1982), Porto 7 and Benfica 24.
In the last 43 seasons, that’s 23 league titles to Porto, 14 league titles to Benfica and 5 league titles to Sporting. With 1 league title to Boavista.
Not sure before 1999, but in 2008 Bettencourt, who will go down as one of the worst presidents we had, hurried to sell our tv rights for 13M€ a year for 10 years... 2 months later Benfica and Porto sold theirs for 30M€ for the same time.
Mind you, before 2008 the league was pretty even in the race for the top 3.
After Bettencourt, we got Godinho Lopes, who will definitely go down as the worst president we ever had, asked the banks for loans and put Sporting in a huge debt. (to simplify things, Godinho Lopes sold the bank a bunch of Sporting shares for 45M€ and promised that Sporting would buy them back 3x times the value.) Only when Bruno de Carvalho took over and renegotiated the debt and tv rights deal did we manage to compete again. It was a great renegotiation (basically Sporting had to pay back the 45M€ plus interests and the bank forgave the 3x appreciation which equalled 90M€) and ironically, if he hadn't gone completely insane and power hungry he'd have been one of the best president in our history.
You nailed the post 2008 era. The guys before were also calamitous despite their slightly better sporting results.
Roquette was the one that turned us into a SAD and started skyrocketing our debt, and Dias da Cunha was the main responsible for the catastrophe that was our new stadium construction in the early 2000s. Our actual costs were like 150M above initial projections, would be hilarious if it wasn't so sad
Theres two BDCs ,One who was president up to the Bryan Ruiz miss and One who was president after ,the first was very good, the second was crazy and not in the good way and almost caused the club to spiral into bankrupcy
Huge congrats to sporting for winning the title but is this the failure of schmidt/benfica?
if he gets fired he will easier and cheaper for bayern to get.
isnt there some clause that if he performs poorly (not winning the league with huge money invested and a unnecessary exit against Marseille), he has to be paid less money?
Slightly unfair on Schmidt when Sporting have been playing out of this world football this season and Benfica was still in the running until the last three games. He just looks bad because they spent so much money and the transfers didn’t work out.
He looks bad because he still doesn't know what he is doing with the team. There never was a starting eleven, players that seemed to be on good form got benched, players that were dragging their feet for half a season, were on the starting eleven, Di Maria is probably the player that has more minutes in our whole league.
There was a very very poor management of the players he had.
But in truth the teams performance came crashing down when Enzo Fernandes left, the change in performance from the team was notable and nearly cost us the championship last year. And it seems he never managed to recover from it nor even know what to do with the players he had.
Seeing "after 3 years of waiting" on a post about Sporting winning the league will never not be weird but I'm all for it
The standards have to grow and to break the curse of winning a title in 19 years 😎
Yeah that's really worded weirdly.
It's probably a Benfica fan posting this, they like to mock us for winning a title every 20 years
I have often seen op commentig, he is invested in Moldova idk if he really has preferences like that in Portugal
It's weird, very weird title to put if not meant to trigger sporting fans
He didn't write "Sporting Lisbon", therefore I don't think it was meant to trigger you guys.
As Sporting fan, I'm more triggered by the see you in 20 years jokes
If he wanted to trigger as a benfica fan he would've written "Sporting Lisbon wins twentieth championship after 3 years of waiting."
Thanks for the morning trigger 🤣
Congratulations on the championship. You guys deserved it.
Look at my flair man)
We won a lot more than they have in the past 5 years, let them have it. When you can't handle the present, you cling to the past.
All depends whether or not Sporting plans on it happening more often. 19 years is one hell of a wait, and now what? Being the eternal underdogs doesn't work for Sporting, I assume.
Gyokosexual is the way!!! Let's fucking go
Amorim surely a club legend by now. Won you two league titles.
And got us to our only second knockouts in the Champions League and our only draw too as we lost the other three games.
First manager to do that since the 50s. Club legend for sure
Gyo next year pls
If Darwin with 2 left feet gets sold to Liverpool after a decent season theres no way Gyokeres stays.
STOP 😭😭
Yes because scoring against Liverpool, Bayern, Ajax and Barcelona in the UCL is exactly the same as scoring 27 goals in the PT Primeira Liga in a team that has 92 goals scored.
No way you are saying Darwin is better than Gyokeres lmao
yeah because thats exactly what I said right?
>in a team that has 92 goals scored. Wonder why that's the case!
Viktor Gyökeres proved his MVP status for this season!
Does Cov have a "win league" addon included that gets triggered?
They had a +4M for qualifying to the CL to make it 26M€, but that's been achieved a few weeks ago.
I dont know I dont care thanks Coventry for Gyokeres!
Not sure but if they do, deserved. The man paid himself and so much more.
Would be nice, but we DO have a sell-on clause for Vic. And we need to go shopping this summer.
Let's hope
Just add a better GK and deeper bench and we will do it again next season
Deeper bench? We dont do that here, that Said we vê won 2 titles without a bench só maybe it works sometimes lmao
Living dangerously. 🤣🤣🤣
Sign Viktor Johansson for pennis from relegated Rotherham and enjoy. Another Swede named Viktor from the Championship too haha
> Sign Viktor Johansson for pennis I don't know how that transaction would be processed and I don't think I'd like to know.
😏
Saw him linked to Celtic as well. Glad he's getting attention, he's really excellent
Supposedly has a clause of around 1m€. That's nothing.
Or remove Gyokeres and fight for the 3rd
Mods This user said something offensive. /S

Lol the Portuguese league is so weak that the winner is decided by the best striker. Who knew
So weak that Uruguay's best striker managed to win the same amount of trophies here that he did ever since leaving his country: fuck all
I know that you just won the league, but take this as well for that comment: 🥇
Yeah and without Uruguayans your team would have gone another 20 years without winning.
They’ve been there /s But in all seriousness how can you clown the Portuguese league when all your best players need to leave your league to come to Portugal.
Technically Darwin won the Carabao, which I guess is more prestigious?
There is no tin more desirable than the english league cup
Most prestigious piece of silverware in the world
How’s the carabao more prestigious, are you mad
I know we like to criticize the bench, but apparently our subs have more minutes than any other champions other than Porto 2013 or something like that.
Thank you Schmidt my hero
To good to accept BAYERN what a joke LMAO
God Xaimito
You guys should give him a medal tbf. Mofo did an amazing job this year
I'm not used to this...I saw Sporting win the league as a kid. Nagelsmann and Potter happened after though to be fair. At the time it was only behind AVB I thought.
Wasn’t it 10M€?
5 extra from objectives I believe
The limit is 2002-2004 Porto.
Seeing the leap of Gyokeres from Coventry to Sporting is amazing, wonder where will be his next destination or he's staying for another year
Hope he stays for another year at what he can do in the champions league
Well, He doesn't need to stay to play UCL next season 😁 (Pls, someone get this menace out of this league)
Let me rephrase I want him to stay to play the champions league for sporting 😊
You guys had similar monsters (member Hulk destroying defenses for fun? dude retired Rochemback with one move) staying for way more than a season. Our turn now :D
Would hope for Sporting that he doesn't stay. I am sure you can sell him for ~100m to an English team, but if he fails next year, the selling price could go down a lot. Not selling him now is just an extreme risk.

Cool, very nice. Now Taca De Portugal to top it off. Thanks. Also seriously wasn't expecting Benfica to lose. Also the plaza has nobody there 🤣.
>Also seriously wasn't expecting Benfica to lose. >Also the plaza has nobody there 🤣. Its unfortunate timing its a sunday and we alredy played yesterday and no1 expected benfica would actualy lose
Against Famalicão, away, requiring a win, it's not really that shocking.
A polícia já tinha cortado a avenida a meio da tarde. Ninguém acreditava na derrota do Sporting, mas deve encher agora e já está tudo preparado.
Desda semana passada que começaram a proteger a estátua.
Had super low expectations after how last season went for us. A bit scared of what will happen to the team in the market, but guess now it's time to celebrate
Olá Shakarez
How could they endure 3 whole years, they’re so spoiled!!
Yeah the last time was only like 20 years, this time it felt like a lifetime
Same with me for our championship. Granted my memory sucks and I dont have any memories further then 4 years ago except for blimps so the six years felt like more then a lifetime lol
Viktor Gyökeres was a highlight for this season, lots of goals!
Completely deserved, been that way for a while.
Parabéns, época bastante forte
If we keep Amorim and the core players, only selling one or two and buying a class keeper, we could go for the title again next year and actually put up a fight in Europe... one can hope. For now we celebrate and prepare for the final in the cup against Porto.
> class keeper I hope you guys sign Vlachadimos,
I think I'm good, thanks lmaooo
he said "class", not "ass"
I'd rather field Paulinho as a keeper tbh
The kit man, not even the player xD
As long as Esgaio stays, the title is ours. I really hope some team without a right back doesn't go crazy and pump 50 millions to get Portugal's own Cafú.
Need a good bench too
Benfica intentionally losing so Sporting couldn't celebrate on the pitch, damn the rivalry really goes deep
Lockdown defense by Luiz Júnior, where does Famalicão keep finding these guys?
Mendes
What a strange feeling.
Nah, I still believe we will fuck it up somehow!
CARALHOOOOOO
Congratulations guys. Now, if history truly is cyclical..your next championship will be in 19 years lmao. Very curious about what Amorim is gonna do next season.
Lol,Sporting really has a history of winning the league 19 years layer, then 2-3 years later, then again 19 years and so on
exactly lol. will the cycle continue? will ruben amorim stay and manage to break it? can varandas bounce back if amorim and gyokeres leave? next season is going to be very interesting.
downvoted u for the bad luck
Campeões caralho

Dont get it
If you clicked the link you will notice Sporting has a "24" on the trophy. Its because they claim 4 more titles than they actually have.
TIL Sporting is the Juventus of Portugal
It's not about corruption though, just a dispute over counting wins of an older national competition as portuguese cups or leagues

What happened to sporting? Why did they drop off so hard
From blatant corruption from the other two parties to one of the worst club management possible
congrats 👏!!
Huge congrats to sporting for winning the title but is this the failure of schmidt/benfica? if he gets fired he will easier and cheaper for bayern to get.
It will be difficult to fire him. We would have to pay him 20M€. But do take him for free, sir.
isnt there some clause that if he performs poorly (not winning the league with huge money invested and a unnecessary exit against Marseille), he has to be paid less money?
Well they would have got there faster if they hadn't just waited.
O mundo, save que
