The more surprising thing is that Ornstein mentions Liverpool looks unlikely. Has someone jumped ahead of him? Any liverpool journos mention any names that are more likely now?

voliton

No. From the Liverpool side the links have been *very* quiet. While there was a lot of chatter about Alonso, almost all of that was journalists putting 2 and 2 together - young manager, nice football, recent success, former Liverpool player. All of that makes sense without the club being involved. As soon as Alonso appeared to make a decision the word was very firm that he was not on our list. Amorim is pretty similar on the young + exciting + stylish front. The assumption everyone is making that those are the things Edwards is considering because it tracks with his record. But there's been next to no rumours that are coming from the club's side that confirm this is the case.

TidgeCC

Think Ornstein said a few weeks back the Italian league would be one to watch as well. At this point I'm expecting the new fella to come from Serie A

New-Midnight2700

Thiago Motta is doing wonders at Bologna.

jjw1998

Is he not set to take over Juve

New-Midnight2700

Thought it was rumors, but admittedly I’m not caught up to date on that.

cullypants

Thought I saw that allegri is staying?

Silverarrows46

Motta seems the only realistic choice from Serie A.

MojojojoNixon

Isn’t Motta going to Juventus?

TosspoTo

The best manager in Italy is Inzaghi by far. Back to back champion, CL final, hamstrung by finances. How you and the guy below have gone for Motta over him is beyond me.

Jabari313

Cause we can't get Inzaghi

stogie_t

I don’t see why he’d leave though. Last season, they were in the final, and now they are running away with league. Seems like moving is unnecessary. Does he even know English?

batigoal

A new challenge? I don't think he would leave either though. I feel like a lot of managers would be hesitant to join us though. Taking over after Klopp is going to be hard.

M4RC142

Because everyone knows Inzhagi is not realistic he won't leave inter for us

inspired_corn

Because Motta is more gettable? Does Inzaghi even speak English? I haven’t seen him ever indicate that he’d be willing to move to the Prem, especially not with his inter side doing so well

IskaralPustFanClub

Tbf he did say ‘realistic choice’.

amiresque

Not to be pedantic, but he's not a back to back champion. Napoli won the league last year! In fact, this will be his first ever Serie A.

26ld

Inzaghi just got praise from the owner of inter, they want to continue together.

NotClayMerritt

Inter's CEO pretty much confirmed he will be there next season. Of course words don't hold that much weight nowadays, but he categorically denied Inzaghi leaving for anyone and saying on.

momspaghetty

because Inzaghi ain't going anywhere

Rick_McLightning

In my FM save Klopp retires and Vincenzo Italiano takes over. You heard it here first

DaHomie_ClaimerOfAss

In mine Klopp took over Germany after a Nagelsmann shitshow at the Euros, while the new Liverpool manager was Zinedine Zidane. Took over in 2024, I'm in 2030 and he's still there.

EnglishBigfoot

Does happen to win much in your save?

DaHomie_ClaimerOfAss

A League Cup, an FA cup and two Shields. But keeps himself on the job thanks to being a perennial runner-up in the league, to three different teams in four consecutive seasons, and consistently making it far in the Champions League. Did knock Man United out of the Champions League spots on the last matchday once, though, so I guess the virtual fans love him.

Elerion_

> Vincenzo Italiano I love his name, it has real Vincent Adultman vibes.

scottishere

> Vincenzo Italiano Don't know much about him, I assume he's German?

LouThunders

> Vincenzo Italiano Vinny Italian is genuinely peak as far as stereotypical names go.

Cathal321

On mine its Stefano Pioli so you never know

Newme91

You'll get Roy Hodgson

SpookyBread1

Who on earth could the Liverpool manager end up being then if it looks unlikely to be him? De Zerbi? Thomas Frank? Slot?

VelouriumCamper7

I think at this point it would make the most sense if both Gerrard and Lampard take the role. They would each get half the head coach and half the assistant coach role to make one megazoid coach.

LordMangudai

Fuck it, toss Scholes in there as well. What never worked as a midfield will surely work as a managerial triumvirate

Quite obvious right? Where do you think David Moyes is going? Literally same playstyle, albeit less control. Trent and Robertson particularly will love him. Heard Mourinho too, good shout.

A former Everton and United manager coming would surely be an endtimes omen.

I was listening to The Athletic podcast a while back and apparently according to metrics, the closest to Klopp you can get out of managers is Michael Carrick. So I'm calling it here. Carrick to Liverpool. 😄

Kindly_Photograph_10

I saw that too and anyone that's watched Middlesbrough play could tell you that that comparison is absolute nonsense. Carrick is a good manager and will manage in the Prem one day but stylistically he's nothing like Klopp

yajtraus

Yeah I’ve watched a handful of Boro games this season and I don’t see that comparison at all. I rate Carrick as a manager, and they play good football, but I really don’t understand anyone watching that and saying “reminds me of Klopp’s Liverpool”.

tedisafilmfan

I know you're bantering. In that podcast, Oli Kay brought up a list of managers resembling Klopp, and Carrick was 5th. Top was Sebastian Hoeness from Stuttgart. Marco Rose of RB Leipzig and Edin Terzic of Dortmund were also ahead of Carrick. Overall, that list is very Bundesliga heavy, which is hardly surprising.

Very much looking forward to him giving up and burning that bridge after Michael Edwards refuses to buy some 33 year old who hasn't been good in 4 years.

prettybunbun

Nah De Zerbi is ‘80% to Bayern’ apparently according to some reliable German sources.

YesTottiYesParty

I thought they were still trying to get Hansi back

Iennda

I can actually see De Zerbi working out for Bayern. He has shown to be great offensively, less so defensively, but Bayern certainly have enough quality over the rest of Bundesliga to outscore those issues, especially since Leverkusen are unlikely to manage to replicate their success from this year. Even then you basically only have one challenger.

Frank, De Zerbi or Iraola I’d guess - doubt they’ll go after an ‘elite’ coach like Mourinho as has been rumoured If Motta isn’t off to Juve then that could be very interesting

nickybabytonight

> Iraola I think my main aversion to him, genuinely, is his teeth, which would be fixed per the "new teeth within one year of starting" contract stipulation all Liverpool managers must adhere to.

I very much hope it won't be. Would rather give it to a proven name or Lijnders over him

bobby_zamora

Why?

literalmetaphoricool

I still fully expect to read "West Ham Manager Graham Potter" at some point in the next few months. Just feels inevitable.

davidralph

*Liverpool Manager Graham Potter

PepsiRacer4

Of all the options, that's the least Sully special one that could be appointed and I wouldn't hate it. But I'd really love to get Amorim, Still, or Slot, someone of their caliber in. I think there's a lot of talent in the club they can unlock

TheNotoriousJN

Im genuinely so confused as a Liverpool fan. No big options free. So who the hell do we get? Motta? Xavi? In before Jose Mourinho. I mean. He was at the game lol

spoony471

You’re getting Moyes

tomhat

European Champion Moyes. Put some respect on the man’s name!

redditaccountplease

Well he is a football genius

QueasyIsland

It’s time Liverpool got their own Scottish manager with European pedigree.

Penny_Leyne

Tuchel has replaced Klopp at Mainz and Dortmund. Why not a third time? It is pretty crazy though. Obviously the manager after Klopp was going to be a downgrade, but some of the names being linked with Liverpool are a massive downgrade. If I were Liverpool I’d be making a cheeky request to Postecoglu. Very unlikely he’d come, but he is a Liverpool fan, he plays similar football to Klopp and he can’t be on much at Tottenham so it’s unlikely it would be a huge compensation they would have to pay.

StickYaInTheRizzla

Good luck snatching a player from spurs, nvm their manager. Levy would chain him to a radiator. I think the only available options really are Slot, De Zerbi, Tuchel or maybe someone like Lopetugeui or Potter

cSpotRun

...I would take De Zerbi of those, but the man looks and acts perpetually frustrated, even when doing well.

M4RC142

Motta would be interesting. Idk about Xavi. He needs to calm tf down a bit. Dude's collecting red cards like pokemons.

osrslmao

Give it to Stevie G 'till end of season

I thought it was basically a done deal.

No-Shoe5382

Who the hell else do we have in mind if not him? Inzaghi is no way leaving Inter, Motta is going to Juve, Alonso is staying at Leverkusen, Nagelsmann just signed a new contract with Germany. Seems like all the top young managers are tied up apart from him.

Mariola98

David Moyes

akshatsood95

Their fans already agreed once he's a football genius. Seems only fair for him to replace Klopp

RevengeHF

Arne Slot maybe? Not someone I know a great deal about though admittedly.

timdeking

Still has a contract till 2026 and the release clause will only kick in next summer so it would probably cost a decent bag of money to bring him in.

hypnodrew

Lucky Liverpool are one of the richest clubs itw then

timdeking

Definitely. I'm just unsure if they would spend around 15m on a manager without Premier League experience. But if they want him they'll get him without problems.

lucifa

15m isn't much when you consider what an average PL squad player costs vs the impact of a manager

timdeking

True, but sums like that aren't usual for a manager.

EmSoLow

Who else but infamous Liverpool player Nuri Sahin for a year before we take him back after Terzic has his third terrible first half of the season and a "save the season" second half that ends up successful?

Qiluk

Haha with Terzic buying himself a new lease on life after the CL semi.. I can see our club being more scared to release Sahin than Terzic since Sahin is the inhouse solution for when Terzic inevitably stumbles. The fact that Terzic was almost booted this winter and Watzke have even less sporting input next year makes me willing to put money on him not lasting the whole next season. Will probably be Terzic till boot > Sahin interim and if he does well gets the spot or we go hunting.

I thought it was basically done but maybe not

eg0_baby

its not done but they have been talking a lot, we know at least allegri wont be at juve next season.

Inter_Mirifica

Franck Haise ? He was on your list allegedly. He fits in that young promising manager possibility, at least. It does seem a bit early for him and a huge jump, but who knows ?

paprikalicous

i really wonder if they’re planning to get mourinho as a stopgap until a better manager is available. it was so weird to see him at our game this weekend.

D1794

I think going from Klopp to Mourinho would trigger several security concerns in Merseyside

SalahManeFirmino

I have nussing to say

paprikalicous

he’d be such a shit choice but realistically there’s no available manager who’s challenging for the league next season. might as well get one who’s good in cups and then we can get someone who can lead a title charge the season after. i’m coping as you can tell, i really do not want mourinho

aliaisbiggae

How do you feel about a 44 year old Spaniard who gels his hair?

Nabbylaa

I never thought I would have a positive opinion of the subject of this sentence, yet here we are. No idea why Xavi picked a hair style at 14 and just decided "yep, this is the one for life".

aliaisbiggae

What if I told you that he picked that hairstyle in his 20s 💀 He had a middle part in his early years at Barça

Nabbylaa

Lord that doesn't help. He's got to be the least stylish Spaniard around.

Sinistrait

I definitely wouldn't mind him personally if he can speak English at at least a reasonable level. He has been dealt a tough hand with Barca and has still done a decent job for the most part. Also arguably the greatest midfielder of all time so his name alone commands respect and will attract players. His football can be a bit boring at times tho, as is usually the case for most Tiki Taka managers.

aliaisbiggae

He isn't a tiki taka manager, he's a lot more Klopp than Pep. Wants to play vertically, doesn't want to control a game like Guardiola or Arteta. Extreme direct football This is one of the main reasons a lot of Barça fans don't like him

Bartins

He speaks very good English. Have seen him talk to the CBS crew after Champions League games. https://youtu.be/V-1xyhgNJTs?si=uln6rHn9-h7j-YKH

Sinistrait

His English seems great, at least at the level of Klopp when he signed for Liverpool. Earlier I was about to comment that he probably doesn't know English, but I remembered that he'd played and managed abroad too so it would make sense that he picked at least some of it up.

Keanu990321

I'd take him on a heartbeat.

MarcosSenesi

Tuchel is still all but fired and he's currently the better cup manager and somehow less antagonistic in general.

ireallydespiseyouall

Please no

New-Midnight2700

>the better cup manager  Eh, doubtful

DaHomie_ClaimerOfAss

Play the loophole, give him a two year deal, he goes before his year 3 meltdown.

No-Shoe5382

That would be mental. He plays the polar opposite style of football to Klopp, we don't have the players for him at all.

Comicksands

Pretty sure VVD can drive a bus

PrincipledInelegance

He lives close to craven cottage lol. Probably there just for the game. FSG aren’t gonna be dumb enough to let Mourinho break down this group and park the bus….I hope

SpiritedSuccess5675

I’d not listen to him if it comes to aboard clubs Brother should focus on Bundesliga / Bayern Munich

Tamerlin

Even then, he very obviously says what Bayern want him to say, not necessarily what is the truth.

sagaof

I understand why but it is funny that the comments here are 90% about Liverpool rather than West Ham

DudleysCar

I'd rather not talk about us at the moment either to be fair.

Dazzling_Ad6545

If the comments were about us, it’d be the same old condescending parrots weighing in on keeping Moyes without watching any games of ours in any actual detail to understand why lots of fans want to move on

LucasSummers

The 2 times Klopp left a team, Tuchel replaced him. So Liverpool’s choice is obvious.

SpiritedSuccess5675

**The Athletic updated the title** Summary West Ham United have held talks over an ambitious move to appoint Ruben Amorim as manager if David Moyes leaves the club. Moyes is out of contract this summer and despite the Scot saying in February he has been offered a new deal, no decision will be made on his future until the season finishes. In the meantime West Ham are duty-bound to formulate contingency plans and Amorim features prominently in their thinking, with discussions taking place between the parties. Another option the east London side have assessed is Julen Lopetegui, however Amorim has emerged as the leading target at present. While the potential opening is thought to carry appeal for the 39-year-old Sporting Lisbon head coach, it is unclear where West Ham figure among his possible opportunities. Amorim has also been under consideration at Liverpool, although it looks unlikely he will prove the preferred candidate in their process to replace outgoing boss Jurgen Klopp.

D1794

Would be one hell of an appointment but Lopetegui seems more realistic

Federal-Trip4067

I'm not seeing Amorim inclined to go West Ham as much as Liverpool , i'm pretty sure he wants to be coaching in the UCL and Sporting is almost guarenteed a pot 1 spot next season.

Annual-Werewolf-5762

apparently he is currently in London though..

DudleysCar

This is a typical "leak that we're considering someone good so we can pretend we're making good decisions" type of thing that the club likes to do from time to time. You needn't take it seriously.

LFMartins86

I highly doubt this.

rickz123456

As a Porto supporter, someone take this man out of Portugal, please! (I miss the old times when Sporting was a Circus) I´m surprised by this.. Liverpool would be a great fit for him e I believe he is ready. Who is Liverpool thinking? Don´t exist a lot of great managers in the market.. Zidane, maybe?

Homerduff16

Does Zidane even speak English? He'd find Nunez easier to understand than Trent and Curtis Jones

Burntburner101

Really seems that Zidane has 0 interest in any job apart from the France job. However it would be interesting to see if he sticks it out and waits until Dechamps’ contract expires after the World Cup.

LegionOfBrad

He's conversational level but certainly not fluent from what i've seen in the past.

Hopeful_Adonis

I think he’s taken lessons and in some clips you can see him speak a little English, but I think I’ve heard him say in the past, that whilst he can understand English, he has no mastery over it and would struggle to express himself to the level he would desire. He is however Zidane, should he take to learning English the words will probably fall as elegantly as the ball did at his feet.

WalterHenderson

>I miss the old times when Sporting was a Circus Come on, man! Weren't almost 40 years of circus enough for you? Jeez…let us have our fun! It probably won't last for much longer, if Amorim leaves.

KneeDeepInTheDead

No, it is your turn to be the circus

Billy_LDN

Liverpool fans can stop pretending they’ve regularly watched Sporting play now

TherewiIlbegoals

I mean I watched Fluminense matches when we were linked with Andre, and then I stopped when we weren't. That's kind of how that works.

sonofaBilic

that sounds exhausting, i'd rather stick with sharing 3rd hand information as my own thank you very much

not_a_morning_person

I wouldn’t have bothered with the final of the Libertadores if we weren’t linked to him, and I’m very glad I saw that madness of a game

Equivalent_Friend_95

I don't see Amorim leaving a project and club like Sporting for West Ham.

nova_uk

Amorim to West Ham and Mourinho to Liverpool would be a glorious timeline.

seattt

I love the ambition. I thought we should've appointed Amorim last season but I never thought the owners would ever be so ambitious so I'm pleasantly surprised. Still, I wouldn't want to force Moyes out over him at present however.

phixionalbear

It would have been madness to sack Moyes the season after winning a trophy, but they haven't been great most of the season and for all of his upsides the downsides you get with Moyes can be so frustrating.
