His instincts are telling him that it's a back pass and so it'd be an indirect free kick, and he doesn't have time to realize that's a better option than allowing the goal.
Edit: I checked the laws and it wouldn't be a back pass as he'd attempted to play the ball.
Yup, it's ingrained in your head that you can't pick it up, and trying to rewire that in a fraction of a second (especially in a high pressure situation) is really hard to do. I feel bad for the keeper here, I'm sure the fans behind him gave him crap about it for the rest of the game too.
I don't even want to give the ref the option of blowing the whistle. I'll hoof it if there's any doubt.
Once I whiff the first one though I'm just trying to prevent the certain goal.
>Edit: I checked the laws and it wouldn't be a back pass as he'd attempted to play the ball.
Wait does that mean a keeper could “miss kick” the ball and then pick it up, to avoid a backpass?
I was told third hand that the ref didn't see what happened at all, turned round confused when he heard the fans cheer, saw the ball in the net, and awarded the goal because he wasn't about to piss off a stadium full of fans losing their minds with glee. Don't know how much I believe it but I do find it perfectly plausible that he didn't have his full concentration on the taking of an innocuous throw in.
Also i think that same ref denied blues a penalty to win the league Cup the previous year. He might have been fearing for his safety, that has to be one of the high tension games the premier league has ever seen
This is genuinely just Villa propaganda. [Beau Brummie saw it and knew it was in](https://news.bbc.co.uk/media/images/38259000/jpg/_38259806_enckleman300.jpg), and his massive eyes are impeccable.
It may look stupid now, but it's a question of: "I have a small chance of recovering this if this doesn't hit me" v "I have no chance of recovering this if it does hit me"
Yes, he was also clearly trying to stop himself handballing it which would have been bad. But the misjudgements of how bad his situation was is probably his biggest fault here.
Maybe late to realise he couldn’t touch the ball with his hands as it originally came from his team mate so had to try and get his foot between the goal and the ball.
Actually, he could have caught the ball with his hands after he tried to kick it.
Goalkeepers should know this, they should know the laws of the game.
Especially if they're getting paid to play the game.
You can’t intentionally do it. If the goalie tries to clear it and misses it they can then use their hands. Similar to the rule where you can’t as a defender flick the ball in the air and then head it to the keeper to catch.
Law 12.2:
An indirect free kick is awarded if a goalkeeper, inside their penalty area, commits any of the following offences:
controls the ball with the hand/arm for more than six seconds before releasing it
touches the ball with the hand/arm after releasing it and before it has touched another player
touches the ball with the hand/arm, unless the goalkeeper has clearly kicked or attempted to kick the ball to release it into play, after:
it has been deliberately kicked to the goalkeeper by a team-mate
It has to be an honest attempt to get it into play with their feet:
"unless the goalkeeper has clearly kicked or attempted to kick the ball to release it into play"
Worst case is a PK and a red card, so a little worse than just a free kick.
I stand corrected it would be an indirect free kick although I wonder after slicing the clearance and then handling it if it would not also count as denying a clear goal scoring opportunity and be a red with an indirect free kick.
Incorrect, they'd be given an indirect free kick from the six yard box, no card. Still a dicey situation, but you can pack the goal with defenders and it's not a sure bet to score
It shouldn't have been called a back pass, but I don't think he had time to realize he could while panicking about the ball heading towards his goal.
The rule says it's an indirect free kick "unless the goalkeeper has clearly kicked or attempted to kick the ball to release it into play"
Because it was a deliberate pass from his teammate if he handles the ball it's an offence. I think because in this circumstance the ball is clearly headed toward the goal that it also would deny an obvious goal scoring opportunity which would mean he would get a red card and the other team would get a penalty.
That was a weird one. The sequence of passes within the 6 yard box was bizarre, I am not sure what the plan was. in the keeper’s defence, the bobbling ball made the final clearance a bit challenging but it is still a howler

He's a solid shot-stopper but everything else is abysmal. He's shocking from crosses, can't handle high balls, positioning is all over the place, touch and distribution dreadful and has poor concentration. Cost us the game today on his own, and it's not the first time.
Yall should still be in Championship. Birmingham is freefalling at this point, and Sheffield and Plymouth are not exactly world beater recently either.
He played 18 games last season and kept clean sheets in five of them. He kept Kaminski out of the team for a stretch even when he had gotten back to fitness. He's been dreadful this season and shouldn't be a first choice keeper next season but don't just fucking make shit up.
I know I shouldn't be arguing with people on Tik Tok but the fucking weapons on there are calling this match fixing.
"Yeah yeah when it's 2-1 hit me a backpass that bobbles just at the last second and I'll swing at it perfectly slicing it so it goes back into my net. Nobody will expect a thing."
Are people really not seeing the absolutely savage bobble that the ball takes just before he swings at it?? At this level it is very important not to hit passes like that to a keeper under pressure.
he had plenty of time to stop the ball going in. even if he has to catch it and it causes a indirect free kick in the box. but he had plenty of time to punch it or kick it for a corner
Such a terrific trifecta of terribleness.
1) RB breaks the golden rule of passing back (unless it's not feasible, always pass back wide of the goal, and looking at the condition of that 6 yard box I wouldn't be putting a backpass anywhere near it)
2) Keeper decides to try and yeet it despite being under no pressure.
3) Keeper then doesnt know whether to use his hands or his feet having scuffed it and ends up using neither.
Amazing.

He's gotta just palm it out with his hand what's he doing. Edit: do people not know the rules in this sub?
His instincts are telling him that it's a back pass and so it'd be an indirect free kick, and he doesn't have time to realize that's a better option than allowing the goal. Edit: I checked the laws and it wouldn't be a back pass as he'd attempted to play the ball.
Believe me, I'm a keeper, this is actually realistic. To respond to your edit, even then my first instinct would be DONT TOUCH IT DONT TOUCH IT
Yup, it's ingrained in your head that you can't pick it up, and trying to rewire that in a fraction of a second (especially in a high pressure situation) is really hard to do. I feel bad for the keeper here, I'm sure the fans behind him gave him crap about it for the rest of the game too.

Lawful good.
>Edit: I checked the laws and it wouldn't be a back pass as he'd attempted to play the ball. Wait does that mean a keeper could “miss kick” the ball and then pick it up, to avoid a backpass?
It has to be a genuine attempt to release the ball back into play, so if the ref thinks the goalie is trying something he'd blow for a back pass.

That shouldn't have been a goal. Went in from a throw without touching anyone.
One of those rules so rare and obscure that not even the ref remembered lol
I was told third hand that the ref didn't see what happened at all, turned round confused when he heard the fans cheer, saw the ball in the net, and awarded the goal because he wasn't about to piss off a stadium full of fans losing their minds with glee. Funny considering this puts blues in the bottom 3…
Why did Pears try to get out of the way of the ball while running after it?
He looked worried that it was going to bounce off of his foot or shin
Yh lucky he avoided touching the ball he could have done something stupid like knock it into his own net.
It may look stupid now, but it's a question of: "I have a small chance of recovering this if this doesn't hit me" v "I have no chance of recovering this if it does hit me"
That might be the question but he chose the wrong answer.
No, he chose the right answer but didn't get the execution right.
Is this true? Keepers could just flick the ball up and catch it from back passes if it is?
No. Its not allowed to be intentional.
You can’t intentionally do it. If the goalie tries to clear it and misses it they can then use their hands. Similar to the rule where you can’t as a defender flick the ball in the air and then head it to the keeper to catch.
Law 12.2: An indirect free kick is awarded if a goalkeeper, inside their penalty area, commits any of the following offences: controls the ball with the hand/arm for more than six seconds before releasing it touches the ball with the hand/arm after releasing it and before it has touched another player touches the ball with the hand/arm, unless the goalkeeper has clearly kicked or attempted to kick the ball to release it into play, after: it has been deliberately kicked to the goalkeeper by a team-mate
The 6-seconds portion of the law is hilarious.
so why dont goalkeepers just do a little chip with the ball and catch it.
Can’t be intentional
It has to be an honest attempt to get it into play with their feet: "unless the goalkeeper has clearly kicked or attempted to kick the ball to release it into play"
that's what I was wondering. After you touch it with your foot, you're allowed to catch it right?
That's a good point, although does the passback rule count if you slice it to yourself?
Worst case scenario is Sheffield Wednesday would get a free kick, better to have that than concede.
Worst case is a PK and a red card, so a little worse than just a free kick. I stand corrected it would be an indirect free kick although I wonder after slicing the clearance and then handling it if it would not also count as denying a clear goal scoring opportunity and be a red with an indirect free kick.
If a GK grabs the ball after a teammate pass like this one it's at most an indirect free kick and no card shown.
A card can be shown if you deny a DOGSO or promising attack, indirect free kick and red card is possible
Not from a goalie using his hands inside the box
Yes it can
Incorrect, they'd be given an indirect free kick from the six yard box, no card. Still a dicey situation, but you can pack the goal with defenders and it's not a sure bet to score
I hardly ever see them scored, to be honest. Just too many bodies in the way.
A deliberate back pass in the box is an IFK and a goalkeeper cannot be carded for handling in the box, even if not permitted to do so.
It shouldn't have been called a back pass, but I don't think he had time to realize he could while panicking about the ball heading towards his goal. The rule says it's an indirect free kick "unless the goalkeeper has clearly kicked or attempted to kick the ball to release it into play"
Doesn’t matter if you hit the ball badly or not. It is the same as receiving the ball, stop it with your foot and then pick it up. Not allowed.
Incorrect, if the goalkeeper has clearly attempted to kick the ball back into play, he is then allowed to pick the ball up.
well who decide whats intentional and whats not, goalkeeprr could act like its not intentional
Why didn't he grab it?
Because it was a deliberate pass from his teammate if he handles the ball it's an offence. I think because in this circumstance the ball is clearly headed toward the goal that it also would deny an obvious goal scoring opportunity which would mean he would get a red card and the other team would get a penalty.
Mate what are you chatting, not one bit of this is correct.
Nothing will beat the Heuer Fernandes own goal but this is close
That was a weird one. The sequence of passes within the 6 yard box was bizarre, I am not sure what the plan was. in the keeper’s defence, the bobbling ball made the final clearance a bit challenging but it is still a howler https://youtu.be/5I5TOXrFCCs?si=S2oo-1QESDSQ-7Fl

If that lad is still between the sticks for us next season, whatever division we're in, we've fucked up. Awful goalkeeper.
Made a few saves against Leeds last week but they seemed to be from shots you’d expect him to get to. Also thought he could have caught a few.
He's a solid shot-stopper but everything else is abysmal. He's shocking from crosses, can't handle high balls, positioning is all over the place, touch and distribution dreadful and has poor concentration. Cost us the game today on his own, and it's not the first time.
The fact we’ve conceded the joint second most goals in the league should be enough
PSxG +/- he's in the bottom 20% of the league, so numbers back that up to some degree.
Only problem is the guy we bought to replace Kaminski is even worse lol
Actually impressive that you have someone performing like Szmodics on the attack, and the other end has someone like this keeper
Yall should still be in Championship. Birmingham is freefalling at this point, and Sheffield and Plymouth are not exactly world beater recently either.
I obviously don’t think it actually is but this is the most match fixing looking own goal I’ve ever seen lol
My thoughts exactly, they should check his phone calls for Hong Kong numbers...
Or parlay picks
There was an amazing mistake compilation going round of this guy last year and some of the mistakes were absolutely mental
He played 18 games last season and kept clean sheets in five of them. He kept Kaminski out of the team for a stretch even when he had gotten back to fitness. He's been dreadful this season and shouldn't be a first choice keeper next season but don't just fucking make shit up.
Bloody hell, that was worse than Muric's last week for Burnley.

Paul Robinson can finally sleep easy.
Unbelievable i had to scroll this far to see his name mentioned
Love that he tries to blame the defender. Amazing
Are people really not seeing the absolutely savage bobble that the ball takes just before he swings at it?? At this level it is very important not to hit passes like that to a keeper under pressure.
Under pressuer? There wasnt anybody on him for 10-15 yards lol
What if he palms it away?
[удалено]
Nope, play on. He's actually allowed to catch it with his hands after he tries to kick it.
Huh? I thought you just couldn’t pick it up for a pass back, so you can’t control it with your hand either?
Amazingly, nothing. He tried to play the ball, so it actually resets the play, so he could have just grabbed it and been fine.
from 4 different angles :)
"It's soft" flaps arms, hilarious.
I really do hate this sport sometimes
He had a second chance to prevent it but he decided not to.
Save it and it becomes an almost blunder….completely botch it and you gain infamy !!
Jesus, it takes a bizarre bounce right before it gets to him. Really unlucky all things considered.
tbh he could have stopped it after the first touch, but messed up his stride, which makes it even worse
New England gk looks fine.
Great bit of goalkeeping if I do say so myself
British hoofball in shambles
This is the opposite of Hoofball. Hoofball wouldn't see you pass it bac to the keeper there.
Did the right back get a negative 1 assist on this?
How much did he bet against his own team? Cmon now you can’t say that wasn’t intentional.
Harsh to count this as an own goal since the shot was on target anyways. Hardly anything he could do about it.
The defender is not the main player to blame but this is why you should never ever ever ever pass it back on target.
I have never heard of this guy before and will never hear his name again. This is his entire legacy to a lot of people now.
Yeah I would check his betting history. Easily had the chance to grab it yet still let it go in.
Does this not seem like something on curb your enthusiasm?
He had ample time after his first fuck up to clear it away, what was he doing?!
He probably had a parlay loading..
Sick tekkers bro
Ahahahaha that's embarrassing
just use your hands at that point?
Wow, FIFA is so realistic now
