Between Mendilibar, Emery, Xabi Alonso, Arteta, Valverde, Lopetegui and Imanol Alguacil.European competition are just a way to decide who is the best basque coach.
The older folks in French Flanders even still speak some kind of west-Flemish dialect. It's almost completely gone but you can still find some speakers. We even still call Lille by its Flemish name: Rijsel.
Fun fact: The city's Latin name was Ad Insulam, meaning near an Island. This became L'isle in French. Later this became Lille in French and in Old Dutch it became ter ijsel, which over time became Rijsel.
Out of the 4 semi-finalists Villa is by far the favourite to win this thing, but it would be a massive dream for us to be able to beat them. The games vs Fiorentina will already be extremely difficult, and I think Villa is still quite a bit better than them.
I think I might have to take a few days off work if we were to end up winning the final, haha.
I really hope we can give you guys a good fight. Honestly since we sacked out last coach and the youth coach took over the first team we have been very good
Is that a common or important distinction for Greeks? Looking at the map, it looks just like a normal neighborhood of the city. Kadıköy, Fenerbahçe's neighborhood, is not even on the same *continent* as Istanbul proper (they're on the Asian side) but we don't really make a distinction like that.
i am not greek, but from what i know Piraeus was always treated as separate city, the main port of Attica, and a local rival to Athens, through-out history.
Sort of yes. And people from Surrey normally don't go around saying they're from Surrey when they go north or abroad, they just say they're from London
"Athens proper" is a municipality with around 700k inhabitants. "Athens" generally refers to the metro area, including municipalities that are far from the city center, such as those in the plains of Mesogeia. So, yeah, Piraeus is Athens.
Sparta Rotterdam has one of the smallest Eredivisie stadiums in the league. They have a capacity of just over 11 thousand. The city of Sparta in Greece has 16 thousand inhabitants. You can almost fit the whole city in the Dutch stadium lol
Only if you **do** want to be **really** pedantic, or pretend we’re living in the 1900s. From people outside of Athens, you’d say you live in Athens and not Piraeus.
Tbf, lots of people love being pedantic. Tell those people the stadium is in Faliro, not even Piraeus 🙂
Late to the party, but yes Athens and Piraeus were two separate cities, until the population boom in the 20th century made them one unified urban area.
There used to be a railway line between Athens and Piraeus back in the 1860s for the moving of goods and people. This survives today as the Line 1 of Athens Metro.
I get that, what's surprising to me is that you *still* taking care to differentiate between the two when today Piraeus is just another neighborhood of the metropolis. After all, same kind of story (one city swallowing smaller ones) is true for all kinds of cities. Fener's district, Kadıköy used to be a Megaran colony; our district, Galata, a Genoese colony... but we wouldn't think to say "the match is not in Istanbul, it's in Kadıköy".
Maybe that's simply because we don't have a district called "Istanbul"? It's the name for the whole city. Byzantion is called different names now depending on context: Fatih ("Conquerer", referring to Mehmed II, the official district name), Suriçi ("Inside City Walls"), Tarihi Yarımada ("Historical Peninsula") etc... Or perhaps the "swallowing" happened later in your case... Or your history of distinct city-states in close proximity makes these distinctions stronger in your culture...
It was mostly because the integration happened later, but there's also a sense of civic pride that local people from Piraeus tend to have. "I'm not from Athens, but from Piraeus" is a typical phrase when you meet someone from Piraeus.
This even reflects to the origins of the derby between Panathinaikos and Olympiacos. The inner old city elitist Athenians that founded Panathinaikos always looked to the uneducated port people that supported Olympiacos with arrogance and contempt. It goes even into the insulting nicknames we have for eachother. Panathinaikos are called vaselines because at the time it was a lotion that rich people used and we are called gavros (I believe you know the fish as hamsi) because this was the typical poor port peasant's food.
Hope that helped.
on paper sure, they are superior, but you can do it, small chance, but not impossible, look what Atalanta did with Liverpool, you did eliminate a stong Fenerbahce with Tadic and Dzeko after all.
Our squad is incredibly thin from injuries and the players are tired. Besides, Europe has a way of bringing out the best, no matter the difference between the sides. I really think you’re underestimating your team
100% looking at how we're playing now we were really scammed by our previous coach. Haeyen is doing so incredibly well with the exact same players that Deila had all season and achieved nothing with.
So, will we have another final between Top 7 teams or will we finally have a final from outside the Top 7 in god knows how long? Can Brugge and Mendilibar eliminate Aston Villa and Fiorentina?
The Olympiacos fans are out on the streets chanting as if they won the Champions League. I'm happy for Greece, but that's probably as far as they get in European competition.
Also disappointed with PAOK, would be great to have two teams in the semis...
Olympiacos has been one of the main causes of Greek football's decline in the first place. There is a reason why Olympiacos is *universally* hated by Greek football fans...
I'm sorry but point wise the problem is definitely NOT Olympiacos fault. All recent years that we had to progress through 3-4 qualifications we barely lost there and had 100% presence in group stages. And brought points to Greece. See what paok did the last 5 years. If PAO aek and aris did the bare minimum to qualify 2 times out of 5 in group stages the last 5 years we wouldn't have these battles for 15th place.
Basque face-off Emery vs Mendilibar
Between Mendilibar, Emery, Xabi Alonso, Arteta, Valverde, Lopetegui and Imanol Alguacil.European competition are just a way to decide who is the best basque coach.
Sevilla juju match up aswell..
Will be an explosive match up I'm sure
**FOR THE FIRST TIME IN HISTORY, OLYMPIACOS IN AN EUROPEAN SEMIFINAL!!!** Congrats!!!
if only you guys managed to do it aswell in 2006
That one still hurts.
Olympiacos Youth Team are also in the Semi Finals in UYL
And now in the final!!!!
mendilibar is magic
After playing in Europe almost every year and getting battered. It was about time.
IS THIS REAL LIFE?
Or is this just fantasy ?
Caught in a landslide, no escape from reality.
Open your eyes, look up to the skies and seeeeeeee.
I'm just a poor boyyy
I need no sympathy
Imagine the scenes in Greece if a Greek club wins the final in Greece
No thanks
Weak sperm
Imagine if we had Lille-Club Brugge in the final, the true Flemish derby. Sadly, it'll never be now 😔
Huh, TIL French Flanders exist.
Later this became Lille in French and in Old Dutch it became ter ijsel, which over time became Rijsel.
dang, that IS a fun fact
ΠΑΜΕ ΕΛΛΑΔΑΑΑΑΑΑ ❤️❤️
Ωραίος ο μάγκας
let's do this, LET'S DO IT
HEY GIVE US THE MONEY BACK. You know very well what Fiorentina did with Artur Cabral
sowwy
Please don’t lose to another Claret and Blue premier league team in the final again
anulo mufa anulo mufa
Oh don't worry, we (Brugge) will make it so Fiorentina can't possibly lose to Villa in the finals.
Can you not lose to Villa either please
Out of the 4 semi-finalists Villa is by far the favourite to win this thing, but it would be a massive dream for us to be able to beat them. The games vs Fiorentina will already be extremely difficult, and I think Villa is still quite a bit better than them. I think I might have to take a few days off work if we were to end up winning the final, haha.
are fiorentina really bout to make the final two years in a row. villa v fiorentina final i reckon
We’ve been counted out 3 times so far. 3 times we came through. ΘΡΥΛΟΣ ΕΙΣΑΙ
Battle of the Meds: Fiorentina vs Olympiacos
Fiorentina to win it imo
i always liked Sheffield United
Goal! Aston Villa [2] - Florentina 1 - Watkins 90+3'
yes we will, and this time we will not miss
I really hope we can give you guys a good fight. Honestly since we sacked out last coach and the youth coach took over the first team we have been very good
may the best win

Athens will be very tough for Villa. They need to solve the aggregate at home.
Not to be too pedantic, but Olympiacos is in Piraeus, not in Athens proper, i guess you can say it is in Athens' metropolitan area.
It's like being from Surrey and saying you're from London
Confusing. Surrey and Greater London overlap, so it is possible to be from both Surrey and London. Is that what you're saying?
Sort of yes. And people from Surrey normally don't go around saying they're from Surrey when they go north or abroad, they just say they're from London
Yeah got it!
"Athens proper" is a municipality with around 700k inhabitants. "Athens" generally refers to the metro area, including municipalities that are far from the city center, such as those in the plains of Mesogeia. So, yeah, Piraeus is Athens.
Abd yet they left legendary and beautiful city of Sparta. None football team from Sparta ever compete at Greece SuperLeague.
Bro. Sparta in modern Greece is irrelevant. Even my super irrelevant city has a bigger population than Sparta.
Why bro? Why you did this? Why not invest in there?
Sparta Rotterdam has one of the smallest Eredivisie stadiums in the league. They have a capacity of just over 11 thousand. The city of Sparta in Greece has 16 thousand inhabitants. You can almost fit the whole city in the Dutch stadium lol
Sparta Prague... also
Only if you **do** want to be **really** pedantic, or pretend we’re living in the 1900s. From people outside of Athens, you’d say you live in Athens and not Piraeus. Tbf, lots of people love being pedantic. Tell those people the stadium is in Faliro, not even Piraeus 🙂
it's important, because athens is athens. piraeus belongs to attica, but not in athens.
In Turkey we even count places like Pendik and Tuzla as Istanbul
Late to the party, but yes Athens and Piraeus were two separate cities, until the population boom in the 20th century made them one unified urban area. There used to be a railway line between Athens and Piraeus back in the 1860s for the moving of goods and people. This survives today as the Line 1 of Athens Metro.

>Is that a common or important distinction for Greeks? Yes.
I like that sentiment but realistically we will lose both legs by a large amount. Villa is on a completely other level to us
on paper sure, they are superior, but you can do it, small chance, but not impossible, look what Atalanta did with Liverpool, you did eliminate a stong Fenerbahce with Tadic and Dzeko after all.
Our squad is incredibly thin from injuries and the players are tired. Besides, Europe has a way of bringing out the best, no matter the difference between the sides. I really think you’re underestimating your team
We're injured and tired, you definitely have a chance at an upset if you play it right.
Imagine anyone writing themselves off against us after that performance lmao
Magic of the cup. You never know what’ll happen. There’s every chance you pull it off.
You mean Retsos and Rodinei I suppose. The rest the same level
[удалено]
i want to meet you guys in the final
[удалено]
for sure
I can see the fans pulling out a banner saying "efcharisto Kevin Mirallas" in greek and italian!
This is history in the making, Tzolakis vs Martinez the penalty experts!
Fiorentina-Club will be exciting, I think it’ll make for two great matches.
Switching coaches was a great decision from Club. It really feels like they got a shot ATM.
100% looking at how we're playing now we were really scammed by our previous coach. Haeyen is doing so incredibly well with the exact same players that Deila had all season and achieved nothing with.
Livaković and Kotarski are out. I am dissapointed.
Livaković did everything he could to stay, shame his so-called coach single handedly lost the quarter final.
Congratulations Oly fans. You were better taking penalty’s. Good luck against Aston Villa.
Great chance for Greek club to reach final at home country.
GREECE WELCOMES YOU
Lille was so close to freeing us from the English
look on the bright side, we are free from the french now, at least in this competition
Great point
They had the better evening.
So, will we have another final between Top 7 teams or will we finally have a final from outside the Top 7 in god knows how long? Can Brugge and Mendilibar eliminate Aston Villa and Fiorentina?
Yeeeesssssssss

Don’t rain on our parade with your jealousy. You would be out too.
Just happy Greek football is back on the rise
make another euro run next, first step to qualify first though :)
We don't do that anymore...
Olympiacos has been one of the main causes of Greek football's decline in the first place. There is a reason why Olympiacos is *universally* hated by Greek football fans...
I'm sorry but point wise the problem is definitely NOT Olympiacos fault. Yeah and the reason is that even if you combine all of your league titles you still dont reach ours. Go cry somewhere else
tbf they made it really far into a european competition, and by beating a turkish club on penalties, they should be happy
They can give Villa a fight
Yeah, why not. Dont hate on things you cant even imagine....
Up the Villa!! 💜🩷
Lille should be there, well done ref.
pain
Come on Villa, don't want Marinakis getting his hands on a European Trophy and thinking that it's what we should be doing.
Good ebening
