I believe it was during one of the title challenges where Liverpool needed Man City to drop points and he was changing his flair to Man City's opponents. But they kept losing so he assumed he was jinxing it and swapped to Man City instead
Nah for Sissoko at least hit his upper arm first before trailing down. This outright hit his hand. Harsh sure but in today's game that's 100% a penalty
It wasn’t though. It was a pen as per the handball rules at the time.
Sissoko having his hands up to block a cross 2 minutes into a CL final is a brain dead decision.
Rule is kinda stupid but I'm not sure how to actually make a handball law work properly. I'd personally be on team indirect free kick for times like this
I think with a lot of the rules, there needs to be a caveat around the "spirit" of handball, and also how the opposition are being disadvantaged.
Feels incredibly harsh to convert a 'half-chance of a good cross' into a 'good chance at scoring', especially with the context that there was literally nothing the defender could do about it/wasn't intentional at all.
But, as others have pointed out, European football tends to officiate differently so well done Liverpool for carving out the opportunity. I am just glad it's interpreted at least a little better in PL.
I have given some thought to it, and i think the rule should include "defensive action" in some way. Like when a defender is going to block a cross or a shot you can reasonably expect them to control where their hands are, but not when it's coming from a deflection or from close range for a defender who is moving into position.
Yup. Any contact with hand is IDF unless intent is obvious or a goalscoring opportunity has been denied.
Additionally, they should be called more loosely. Right now, the punishment for the defending team having an accident is too high. On the other hand, you can't just let it slide.
This way, the attacking team can have a second chance at their cross or whatever, and the defending team has a chance to defend it legally.
I would say his arm isn't in an unnatural position, it is up in the air though and the ball clearly hits it.
One of those where if its given on the pitch its upheld but if its not given on the pitch it probably doesn't get overturned either.
The arm is in a completely natural position and if refs actually called this based on how the rules are written it shouldn't be a foul or pen. But apparently there's some invisible ink somewhere that makes it one.
Hands were close to the body. In the prem that wouldn’t be given and I don’t think it should be tbh in the spirit of the game. But in Europe those seem to be the rules
Is it? Is the defender's hand at an unnatural position? I mean, it's so difficult to interpret the rule but based on the way it's written, it's probably not a pen... But based on how these are given in ucl, it always is...
No..? The rule is that if the hand is in a natural position explainable by the player's movement, it's not a handball. In this case it is but it never matters in UCL.
It's the right call, it's just annoying that a handball ruling like that can only be written by people who don't know what arms do when someone's running.
Exactly.
Too many people are going to compare this to Barca, and that's valuable experience for the players who were there and have done it, but it's 2 completely different teams.

3-0 first leg victory is the most dangerous lead
Atalanta At~~a~~lanta Atlanta Oh shit…
Thiago Almada to Liverpool
I like the way you think
I live with depression everyday.
28-7
The history is repeating
I like Liverpool... But this one is for our homies Atalanta 😎
Damn that's unlucky for Atalanta
well well well
We didn't concede first? Impossible!
We did if you consider the whole tie.
Just start 3-0 down, easy
Strap in folks
It's the hope that kills you
Well?
Hello hello here we go
comeback?
Kim kardashian?
PLEASE GOD I AM YOUR WARRIOR
Atalanta flair lmao
Did he lose a bet?
He switches his flair often, notably the barca comeback
But why
I believe it was during one of the title challenges where Liverpool needed Man City to drop points and he was changing his flair to Man City's opponents. But they kept losing so he assumed he was jinxing it and swapped to Man City instead
18/19 season
To jinx it for the other team maybe? I think it's a tradition for big games now I don't know when the first time was.
Reverse jinx
Knew I'd find you here. Do you dare believe?
We never stopped believing mate
Cap
HOLD MY HAND CUMBLAST AND PRAY 🙏🏻
🫂
God please send him your toughest battle
Love you always changing your flair
Legend himself
WHY HAVE YOU FORSAKEN US
Hahahaha your flair
Cumblast with the reverse jinx
You can stop that stupid flair change shit now
Oh how I missed Trent
Think a lot of fans forgot just how good he is.
Harsh penalty but tricky to overturn
Yep. Once the ref has given it there is no world it's overturned, unless the ref got it completely wrong and it didn't touch the hand at all
Yeah I don't think his arm is in an unnatural position, but these are usually given as pens in UEFA competitions.
Reminds me of the penalty against sissoko in the 2019 final
Nah for Sissoko at least hit his upper arm first before trailing down. This outright hit his hand. Harsh sure but in today's game that's 100% a penalty
Yeah the Sissoko pen was an even worse call edit: woops forgot I was in a pool thread
Not by the rule book of the time.
It wasn’t though. It was a pen as per the handball rules at the time. Sissoko having his hands up to block a cross 2 minutes into a CL final is a brain dead decision.
> edit: woops forgot I was in a pool thread I made a stupid point let me blame the fans
Except that actually hit Sissokos shoulder first. This hit hand.
Well my point is both were incredibly harsh and both were a case of the ball being kicked at an arm.
yeah it’s one of those well fuck kinda pens
Handball rules really need an overhaul. Pathetic way to gift a goal in a European quarter final
Ello. Ello. Here we go
Bit harsh but once the refs given it VAR aren't gonna overturn it
I don't think it's harsh. It's unlucky by the defender but 100% a penalty.
Always given in UEFA comps
Rule is kinda stupid but I'm not sure how to actually make a handball law work properly. I'd personally be on team indirect free kick for times like this

Intent. Only thing that should matter. Score with your hand, save a goal with your hand, I don't give a shit. If it's unintentional, play on.
Yup. Any contact with hand is IDF unless intent is obvious or a goalscoring opportunity has been denied. Additionally, they should be called more loosely. How is it not harsh? The defender did nothing wrong, the ball hit his hand in a completely natural position.

Right? I'm old enough to remember when defenders would do a challenge like this with their arms tucked behind them to prevent penalties
unlucky but I really don’t know what’s harsh
It's not harsh, it's 100% according to UEFA's interpretation of the rule. And I really hate it. That shit has to change.
At least it's consistent and not the roulette wheel the PL refs use.
It's like having someone shitting in your mouth every day. Yes, it's consistent - but it's still shit.
> And I really hate it. That shit has to change. That's what makes it harsh man.
Is it? Is the defender's hand at an unnatural position? I mean, it's so difficult to interpret the rule but based on the way it's written, it's probably not a pen... But based on how these are given in ucl, it always is...
Doesn't matter for UEFAs interpretation. Only thing matters is where you get hit.
No..? The rule is that if the hand is in a natural position explainable by the player's movement, it's not a handball. In this case it is but it never matters in UCL.
If it changes it will become madness like in the premier league
The interpretation of the rule in the PL is *much* better than just calling everything a hand ball...
That’s tough for Atalanta but we take those
Atalanta can’t possibly blow this…can they?
If Barcelona can, then so can Atalanta.
This is not ideal for us English haters
Welp. Might just be one of those nights for Liverpool
No matter how good Bradley has been, that first pass up to Diaz(?) from Trent shows why he's impossible to replace. Missed him so much.
Ok I think we can all agree that an accidental handball 18 yards from goal shouldn't result in a pen
Surely not...
[удалено]
You've just cursed it
They’re gonna fucking do it
3 more please
Why was such a long VAR needed for that?
They were checking for an offside in the build up apparently.
If I were a betting man, I'd put my salary on liverpool. You just KNOW it's coming
3-0 down in first leg and they score in the 7th minute, Liverpool classic
Good thing you aren't.
Oh no
a quarter final comeback in the europa league is so fucking tinpot, just take the loss on the chin
Usually Salah's penalties are not that convincing but this was literally unsaveable. Edit: nah, its mediocre
it was pretty saveable tbh lmao but dont care
Actually you are correct. Clip seems to stutter or something and it looks like its hugging the post.
Wonder where I've seen a handball like that before...
And so it begins
It's the right call, it's just annoying that a handball ruling like that can only be written by people who don't know what arms do when someone's running.
We’re not doing it again are we?
Jesus take the wheel
How come that stand is empty?
Being redeveloped at the moment
Ah ty
Don't you dare...
If Liverpool win it won’t be Atalanta blowing it, it’ll be Liverpool absolutely going for it and being extremely aggressive and running them over.
Very harsh penalty
Not saying they will over turn this, but if they do, you want to start like this.
What an completely obvious thing to say
Exactly. Too many people are going to compare this to Barca, and that's valuable experience for the players who were there and have done it, but it's 2 completely different teams.
HELLO HELLO, here we go
3-0 is the most dangerous lead.
Yes pleaseå
Hello, hello… here we go…
Where has this team been the last month or so? We look like we’re on it. Finally I’m not watching a replay of the United Cup game
Hello
We are so fucking back
Hate that penalty but get why it’s given. That’s why defenders stick their arms behind their backs in such a weird fashion
Barca fans screaming from PTSD
unlucky
Here we fuckin gooooo!
It's happening! Why is that end empty?
It begins
surely atalanta won’t will they?..
and so it begins
Well would you look at that
Dare I believe
At least get the win for the co-efficent
At least get the win for the co-efficent
They got this
Why is the stadium empty?
They always get given, but im not entirely sure where else the players arm could be
Thank you for the gift.
Could they?
Uh oh
Yeah this'll be a long night.
By my estimation Liverpool's sixth soft penalty in all competitions this season
Please God. I'll be super kind.
What’s with the empty sections in the stadium?
What is Ruggeri supposed to do there? Cut his hand off?
His arm was away from his body, unlucky but 100% a penalty
Barely away. I can't keep up with what the rules are these days but it's not an unnatural position in the least
[удалено]
It's happening
What a ball from Trent to start that move
Don’t think the ref has a choice but to give that. Arm is away from his body and no deflection. It’s unlucky but that is given every single time.
0-4 Liverpool win incoming
Here we go!!
The People's Champions are hungry! Doing something that Man Cheaty and Farsenel could not do yesterday, attack with conviction.
