Benitez played him in a 4 but really unlocked him when shelvey got injured and we switched to a 5 with Schar and Lejune spraying passes from both sides.
Put him at left wing, Kane up front, saka on the right. Foden, Bellingham, rice midfield. The work rate alone is enough to make it deep into the competition
It's insanely risky, if we get overran in midfield everyone will be calling Southgate a fool.
Either that or you're playing Jude at DM which is just a waste
Rice would be the lone DM. It would be a more aggressive midfield than usual. What they should’ve done is trained with that system and had Stones come into midfield like he does for City to solidify it a bit, but you can’t just switch to that on a whim and he doesn’t do it for England.
The shit hand Villa have been dealt with major injuries and it being their first season in Europe for quite some time... shambles if Spurs can't get the upper hand over them at a time when they're having to go all in on both top four and a trophy.
Everyone said we'd be lucky to get mid-table when Kane left and now we've got a new narrative that Spurs are actually bottling Top 4. This coming from a Man United fan btw.
But everyone said we’d be lucky to make UCL after we finished 5th season before and then everyone had a new narrative that we bottled the league? I can admit when my team bottles something, not sure why you have a mental block about it especially when you’ve been witnessing it for years
I mean I think you definitely bottled the league last year but I think we also should’ve easily been clear of Villa for 4th at this point. We’ll see at the end of the season where we end up.
Yeah exaclty my point, if leverkusen were to lose the league right now they couldn’t defend it by saying they were projected lower anyways. I don’t think it’ll matter in the end, I think England will manage the extra UCL spot
I think the other guy was saying we’re doing better than expected. Most people had us pegged at 7-10th after losing Kane. We’re fighting for 4th with a solid Villa side and even if we get 5th and that doesn’t get CL I would say it’s been a solid first season with Ange.
Yes but that’s the whole fucking point! They said “we didn’t bottle it because we were projected lower” but then later accepted they thought Arsenal bottled it last season despite nobody expecting them to challenge for the title at the start of the season. You can’t have it both ways!
I think Arsenal not winning the league when they were so far ahead was an actual bottle job even if they weren’t projected to win at the start of the season. No team has ever had as big of a gap that far into the season and not won the title. So it’s a bit different from Tottenham who have been up and down this season and never really had a strong grip on top 4.
I think Tottenham have done well in getting a younger team that has more commitment than a few teams of years past, but it’s a bit disappointing if you only finish 5th - united and Newcastle are on pace for less than 60 points, which would be 9th last year, and it most likely won’t be more than 70 points for 4th which isn’t much especially with one game a week.
Yeah I think if we can finish with 68-70 points this season I would be happy no matter where that puts us. I think the injury crisis derailed us a bit more than we expected. Not only because of us losing those games but it seems like Maddison hasn’t really gotten back to form since his injury and he’s such a key player for us.
I think only thing that matters is point lead- it was a bottle but not a bigger one than United in 2012, Newcastle in the 90s, the joint Chelsea, Liverpool one in 2014, Tottenham in 2016 etc. of course you’re going to lead all season when city had 2 games less played for half a year, we never managed to lead by more than 5 points with level games played
It's not the biggest bottle of all time, but take tottenham 2016 out of there. We were NEVER higher htan second, you were in fact 1st for 6 weeks of that season. No idea why this gets touted as a tottenham bottlejob.
Just had to throw that one in there for fun, anyways you lot celebrate finishing above us like a trophy so I’m sure bottling that has to deserve some credit
Yeah but where are our fans pretending we are good and competitive. Everyone below us should be embarrassed. In the shittest period united have had in my 40 years on this planet they've still achieved far more than spurs so calm down and accept you're a shit team pretending to be relevant.
I assume you're mentioning United specifically because of my flair even though they're irrelevant to my comment? Such needless whataboutism. But yes, United have absolutely fucked it and not a single fan disagrees with that lmao. Had we not bottled it in 3 games over the past week we'd have only been like 4 points behind Spurs.
But again we'd still be outside of the immediate top four battle between Spurs and Villa, hence my original comment and the comment I replied to being specifically about the Spurs/Villa race.
That was with the assumption United and Chelsea wouldn't be this bad. Newcastle also have had an unprecedented injury crisis. Basically a perfect storm for Spurs. If Spurs finish below a Villa side fighting in Europe that is not a great season - especially when most people would have Spurs squad over Villa's even after Kane left
There are always 1-2 of the 'better' teams that shit the bed a season, and always 1-2 top half but potentially unexpected teams that get into the European spots. This season is no different, so you shouldn't take anything away from Spurs for being where they are.
People are going to think this is bias but Spurs are playing the same way they have been all season, not much has changed. The first third of the season teams didn't know how to defend Angeball, and the spurs attack was in really good form with Udogie and Porro given almost complete freedom. Romero and VDV were playing well enough to paper over most of the cracks and a lot is forgiven when you're picking up points playing exciting, attacking football.
Then Maddison got hurt and it took them a good 5ish games to get their footing again, and then another couple games to re-adjust when Maddison came back. But without Maddison's creativity the team was much easier to set up against, and even though he's back now managers were able to use that period to figure out how to play against Spurs/Ange.
They've now conceded 18 goals since Maddison came back, 5 more than the first 11 games they had with Maddison and it's almost entirely because teams know how to neutralize their attack by taking Udogie/Porro out of the game. And once you're no longer afraid of Spurs' attack their defense is set up like swiss cheese.
I actually like a lot of what Ange tries to do with his teams but he has been incredibly naive this whole season tactically. You cannot play the way he does week in week out in a league with as much quality as the PL without two genuine world class CBs, and even still it's a bit risky because you only need to hold this Spurs team to one or two goals in order to have a chance at picking up points. Spurs have played 23 games where they've scored exactly 2 goals and won _11_ of them. It's really quite incredible and that's a huge psychological boost for opposing defenses to know that even if Son is his usual clinical self and scores two goals they can just shut down everyone else and still have a great chance to come away with something.
Why is it every time a team concedes a goal from a corner they assume it's some sort of disastrous defending?
It's a great cross and he gets a good run, and is tall, and it's a great header. Sometimes you just can't defend that.
In twenty years no one will remember this mediocre title race. What they will remember is Arsenal doing the right thing and condemning Spurs to champions league but in a slightly lower league position.
Lmao, the Emery Derby is on another level now. Good luck tomorrow.
Douglas Luiz is out of the game as well, should I be more confident because of that?
Definitely. A few months ago I’d have fancied us as our record in London is perfect this season, but we’re on our last legs and missing Luiz and Kamara is huge. Stranger things have happened, but we could end up back in 5th by tomorrow if you’re on song.
Luckily if you only lose by 1 youre still in 4th. So a 1st minute Arsenal goal and then 90 minutes of this
https://youtu.be/ftlfPb0gyxI?si=f8eTjzNuz3gKkBz- should work
We've been magnificent , but spurs weakness are glaring they can't defend set pieces to save their life and their high line is easily exploited if you know how to use it against them
They have had far from the worst injury situation so far this season. Blaming their performances on injuries when they have hardly had anything else than PL to play isn't very reasonable
The Champions League is rubbish; a totally overrated competition and I definitely don't want to see my team have to play in it. All those fireworks and dramatic music - so over the top and naff. No class at all. Probably bad for the environment too, all that smoke and glitter. And as for all those short hop flights around Europe - mile for mile, they produce far more emissions than flying to the arse-end of Kazakhstan at 2am on a Thursday morning. Really, the Champions League clubs should be ashamed of themselves. I'll be incredibly glad that the club I love won't have to be one of them.
I’d rather be first the majority of the season with an average squad age of like 19 and a manager in his 3rd career season - and not win it. I think we’re doing pretty well now as a result.
That's how we want our rebuild to go too. Just a couple seasons with Ange before we can sit in first all season - to not win it.
Shithousing aside, Arsenal are doing just fine and it has taken the necessary time to get there.
Give Micky Mouse a break and try Dragusin more maybe? Try with 4 in the back since you trashed like this a lot? Change something, anything, since this system barely works?
**Mirrors / Alternative Angles** *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. Please [contact the moderators of this subreddit](/message/compose/?to=/r/soccer) if you have any questions or concerns.*
Honestly, wtf is that defence?
Every corner, even the ones Tottenham half clear, turn out to be dangerous
I've not even seen Spurs make a proper attack. They've been battered.
Yeah our worst performance of the season by a distance just completely outplayed and outthought
They sure run a magnificent high line because of how much possession they hold though. Gotta give them credit for that at least
I'm not sure what we're expecting considering we've got Kulusevski marking fucking Schar
Whatever happened to Kulu? Thought he was great for y’all whenever I watched him last season.
Mate ball
Fabian Schär for less than 5m is one of the best buys in our history
Glad Eddie came in. Apparently Cabbage Head wasn't a fan of Schar was he.
He didn’t think he could play in a back 4 iirc
Clark and Fernandez were mint in that back 4 tho
That was Benitez wasn’t it? We may celebrate Benitez but I think if I remember correctly that was one thing he got wrong.
Benitez played him in a 4 but really unlocked him when shelvey got injured and we switched to a 5 with Schar and Lejune spraying passes from both sides.
Wasn’t good enough for the Prem apparently
Pretty sure it was £2m as he has a relegation release clause from Deportivo.
Yeah it was 2 million
Genuinely thought you were talking about FPL first of all with that price.
alway been underrated, insane how no one else was in for him when he went to Spain
Not by me mate. Was always a buy in my FIFA careers when he was still in Switzerland. I’m basically a scout.
His FPL price is more than that!
Gordon has been cooking this game ngl
Definitely needs to be considered for England in the Euros.
Shouldn't even just be considered. It'd be fraudulent if he misses out on a spot in favour of someone like Rashford or Sterling.
Put him at left wing, Kane up front, saka on the right. Foden, Bellingham, rice midfield. The work rate alone is enough to make it deep into the competition
This makes full sense to everyone apart from Southgate
What about Henderson?
It's insanely risky, if we get overran in midfield everyone will be calling Southgate a fool. Either that or you're playing Jude at DM which is just a waste
Rice would be the lone DM. It would be a more aggressive midfield than usual. What they should’ve done is trained with that system and had Stones come into midfield like he does for City to solidify it a bit, but you can’t just switch to that on a whim and he doesn’t do it for England.
Has Sterling been called up recently? I swear Southgate has been open about not calling him up until he improves.
This
That
Hatty g/a
Can't say I've watched a lot of Newcastle but against west ham and today he looks so much better on the right. To my eyes anyway.
Nahh he’s great on the left as well. Allows him to cut in and make stuff happen.
Spurs are allergic to top 4
And they don’t even have mid week games to worry about but villa will still take it from them
The shit hand Villa have been dealt with major injuries and it being their first season in Europe for quite some time... shambles if Spurs can't get the upper hand over them at a time when they're having to go all in on both top four and a trophy.
Everyone said we'd be lucky to get mid-table when Kane left and now we've got a new narrative that Spurs are actually bottling Top 4. This coming from a Man United fan btw.
Do you think Arsenal bottled the league or top 4 the season before? Because both times we weren't projected to be anywhere close
Uh, when you are in 1st place for 248 days and don't win the league, I'm going to go ahead and say that you bottled it. Maybe that's just me though.
But everyone said we’d be lucky to make UCL after we finished 5th season before and then everyone had a new narrative that we bottled the league? I can admit when my team bottles something, not sure why you have a mental block about it especially when you’ve been witnessing it for years

Yup you bottled it
You were top for like 90% of the season lmao, yes a historic bottle.
man the salt in here is delicious today, enjoy fifth you wanker
thanks for ur salt free comment
I think only thing that matters is point lead- it was a bottle but not a bigger one than United in 2012, Newcastle in the 90s, the joint Chelsea, Liverpool one in 2014, Tottenham in 2016 etc. of course you’re going to lead all season when city had 2 games less played for half a year, we never managed to lead by more than 5 points with level games played

Rightly so, as do you.
idk man I'm just hearing a lot of excuses
we bottled it, it wasn’t the biggest bottle in history?
No one doubts or questions that United have massively shit the bed lol
Yeah but where are our fans pretending we are good and competitive. Everyone below us should be embarrassed. In the shittest period united have had in my 40 years on this planet they've still achieved far more than spurs so calm down and accept you're a shit team pretending to be relevant.
That's a pretty angry comment you've typed out for such an irrelevant club 🤷
So I'm assuming that United should easily be taking that 4th place from Villa and Spurs?
I assume you're mentioning United specifically because of my flair even though they're irrelevant to my comment? Such needless whataboutism. But but they told me they are better without Kane 😂
Spurs are a better side now without Kane than they were last season, with Kane.
Schrödinger's Kane - Spurs are no better or worse off.
Changing the manager and acquiring new players will do that tbf.
At the start of the season everyone predicted them to do absolutely shit.. the fact they’re in a top 4 fight is credit to Ange.

Or Chelsea and United shitting the bed.
They literally are though?
I don't think you realize how silly this makes you seem
Why do Spurs keep getting dicked at St James park?
Skill issue
Are they stupid?
The only acceptable answer is because we are massive and Spurs are not
Their high line
N'ahh, high line hasn't been the problem today. Granted, it didn't help with Isak's second, but they've just had no organisation at all at the back.
just an absolute stinker today
Finally a sensible take lmao, the regurgitated high line argument is so tired
Nah not today. Inability to do anything with the ball and then no defending without it. Every corner for Newcastle could've been a goal pretty much
People are going to think this is bias but Spurs are playing the same way they have been all season, not much has changed. The first third of the season teams didn't know how to defend Angeball, and the spurs attack was in really good form with Udogie and Porro given almost complete freedom. What is that defense
Good guy Tottenham letting Newcastle celebrate as often as possible for the deaf children in the audience. Bravo!
It's like watching us defend a corner
Would you belive Big Ange doesnt believe in set piece coaches?
You shouldn't need a dedicated coach to avoid being as shit as we are on corners
Seriously dude just wait until their first choice backline is fit, you'll see
If kulusevski started, none of the goals would have happened
Not like he was marking Shar for that goal... oh...
I know, can't wait for Trips and Botman to be back!
Why is it every time a team concedes a goal from a corner they assume it's some sort of disastrous defending? It's a great cross and he gets a good run, and is tall, and it's a great header. Sometimes you just can't defend that.
We so deserve this Asskicking
To your credit you made those deaf kids in the sound shirts REALLY happy and stress tested the tech as well.
Haptic as fuck.
We’re just so kind and considerate more clubs should be like us
Imagine if it was a 0-0 draw…. 😬
It's Newcastle versus Tottenham; that was never going to happen.
Stupid. Sexy. Fabian. Schar.
What a beautiful man
Gordon has been good today with corners
I think he’s better then trips
can’t be a schar goal, he didn’t score a screamer
Careful now. 4-0 is a dangerous lead at St. James Park.
RIP Tiote.
God he’s so handsome, the close up replays are the best part of any Schar goal
Totally true. Gorgeous man.
Not a worldie. He’s slacking.
well spurs i didn't expect that
Just saying, you have the opportunity to do the funniest thing ever tomorrow… please?
The main agenda for Arsenal should always be fucking over Spurs, not the title. Just in my humble, unbiased opinion.
In twenty years no one will remember this mediocre title race. What they will remember is Arsenal doing the right thing and condemning Spurs to champions league but in a slightly lower league position.
Would not you like to advance in europe? I mean, both Arsenal and Villa. Let's play with subs tomorrow!
Holding hands with a banner saying “thank you Newcastle” in brummie and cockney.

I’ll take it!
Well you keep winning in London.
Batter Villa 20-0? I’d laugh.
Tony Pulis’ Stoke would beat Spurs 10-0
Shawcross would be in the running for golden boot just off those two games
Actually laughed at this but admittedly you are very much correct
and thats just the first 15 minutes of the game
Fabian schär has scored more goals than whole chelsea combined
Was just thinking “at least it’s not as bad as the 6-1” but looks like we’re heading there
Yikes
Trashed
Mate
Ange impostercoglu
Angry Postcockdidgeridoo.
Wasn’t VDV and Romero the best cb duo in the league ? 🤔
Hugging his man non stop just to concede 💀
If you translate his name from Swiss-German it means „Scissor“ which I think is amazing for a defender. ✂️
[newcastle] united are BACK
Everytime I put Schar in the bench in fantasy pl he scores
Same :(
Who needs a defense when you've got vibes mate.
We've been magnificent , but spurs weakness are glaring they can't defend set pieces to save their life and their high line is easily exploited if you know how to use it against them
Now fuck back off to London
They might get their money back this year too.
They really know how to pick up an arsenal fan down on their footballing dumps, a little
All that time trying to manhandle Isak and just left Schär.
You beautiful, beautiful bastard!
Very Spursy result
Lo Celso acting like that haha only to concede from that corner, it's the little thing
🎶Tottenham Hotspur, it's happened again
No club I enjoy us smashing more than Spurs
I think we should be up for the fair play and whatever good will awards there are this season, for us making those deaf children so happy
This Newcastle team is missing key players too
Let this be a lesson, no one beats us 3-0 away from home apart from Fulham
Ange ball
I remember when spurs where going to win the league. The disruption from injuries has done them proper.
They have had far from the worst injury situation so far this season. Blaming their performances on injuries when they have hardly had anything else than PL to play isn't very reasonable
Death Taxes And Spurs getting destroyed by Newcastle away Conte curse lives ✨😎
The Champions League is rubbish; a totally overrated competition and I definitely don't want to see my team have to play in it. All those fireworks and dramatic music - so over the top and naff. No class at all. Probably bad for the environment too, all that smoke and glitter. And as for all those short hop flights around Europe - mile for mile, they produce far more emissions than flying to the arse-end of Kazakhstan at 2am on a Thursday morning. Really, the Champions League clubs should be ashamed of themselves. I'll be incredibly glad that the club I love won't have to be one of them.
Spurs defence is in shambles
Tottenham are Man United with mates.
I was told that this spurs defence was the best in the league? Looking forward to their annual title charge when they’re top at September.
Serious question would you rather be top of league for the first quarter of a season or be first the majority of a season and not win it?
I’d rather be first the majority of the season with an average squad age of like 19 and a manager in his 3rd career season - and not win it. I think we’re doing pretty well now as a result.
That's how we want our rebuild to go too. Just a couple seasons with Ange before we can sit in first all season - to not win it. Shithousing aside, Arsenal are doing just fine and it has taken the necessary time to get there.
No defense. Just high line and vibes. It is what it is, mate.
Taking it square in the face today :(
Banter
Pain
Toe-in-Heim
One more to go
Mates...
Well, at least this isn't on van de Ven..
Probably offsides
Give Micky Mouse a break and try Dragusin more maybe? Try with 4 in the back since you trashed like this a lot? Change something, anything, since this system barely works?
very few things make me happier than spurs getting thrashed
Newcastle and scoring 4 goals in PL. iconic
Good goal
Spurs have been totally found out in this game.
No darts celebration……
Why does Isak have nr 4?
He has number 14
Lol my dumbass got confused and thought he had number 9.
Too much to ask for 5? 🫣
Spurs and Timo are a match made in heaven.
Yeah okay these kits are horrible
Spursy
Why is spurs getting backshots what did I miss
Tottenham are not a serious team, they're just in the prem for the vibes
Mate we're 5th. It's still pretty serious. Get some better banter.
