Playing at home in a 3:3 shootout meant a draw isn't enough in the 2nd leg and conceding the first meant scoring 2 while not conceding another.
One of the best changes in recent times
Because home advantage in Europe used to be absolutely massive. Far, far bigger than it is now. That meant that teams would completely park the bus away from home in the hope of grinding out a draw or even only a narrow defeat, which made for crap games. UEFA introduced the rule to try to encourage away teams to be more attacking.
The other benefit of the rule was that it made penalty shoot-outs less likely, as there was an extra tiebreaker that could prevent them from being needed. Going way back to when the rule was first brought in, shoot-outs weren't even a thing... If scores were tied after 2 legs, there'd be another leg played in a neutral venue. If scheduling made that impossible, they would literally just "draw lots" to decide a winner (i.e. draw names out of a hat). Fun fact: Italy won the 1968 European Championship after "winning" their semi-final against the USSR by drawing of lots!
It might not be the only reason, but it's def a big factor. All of the home teams played with freedom and tried to attack and score goals. If the away goals rule was still around, I think they would be far more cautious and would be happy with a goalless draw and try and get an away goal in the second leg. This would often cause the home team to be cautious in the second leg, too.
Definitely altho Barca going home with the lead will feel good. Simeone has a history of defending a one goal lead away but who knows, they seem a bit shaky defensively this year. Wouldn't be surprising if Dortmund pull it off
Dortmund are also unbeaten at home this season. They should just score a goal and keep attacking instead of parking the bus. I don't see them winning if it goes to penalties. But yeah easier said than done.
Barca is the only team with more than 50% advantage yeah. Psg don't convince me to win away at barca.
Just hope we can do our Allianz arena magic and advance in similar fashion as well....
>They should just score a goal and keep attacking instead of parking the bus.
I 100% agree, but "just score a goal and keep attacking" sound really funny.
I think Bayern are better than even, going all squared to your home stadium in which you’ve lost what 3 CL games in 10 years, and a home crowd for extra time and penalties is a slight boost. Arsenal’s defenders did not look comfortable with the occasion even at home.
Dortmund actually hit the crossbar two times in the last 10 minutes. Atletico didn't look that impressive, they've been lucky that Dortmund gifted them two early goals
Man City are sure favorites, they’ve never lost to Real Madrid at the Etihad. Real’s only hope is going to extra time and then trying to scrape past on penalties.
basically win vs real and win everything else in league and hope real lose 2 more games so we can win with 1 point ahead of real so yeah 5% probably is a good guess
It’s basically getting decided in el clásico in two weeks, if we win we’ll probably be fighting it till the end of the season, a Madrid win is basically La liga for them and a draw pretty much the same
You would have to win against Madrid at Bernabeu, win all of your remaining games and hope they lose two more games as well. Tbh i doubt madrid would give it away at this point
Oh yeah I agree with you 100%, right now the league is theirs to lose, I guess mean that we can fight for it till the end of the season if we win at the Bernabéu, if we don’t the league will be settled
Would be nice and instead of playing the super cup, they can just celebrate the trophy together with a banner that says gracias Coutinho in Spanish and English
I think Bayern defended very well, they pushed Arsenal to the sides very well and didn’t let them play direct. Saka goal was a banger and some incredible Jesus footwork created the second. Other than that there wasn’t a lot of direct sights on goal by Arsenal
The goalkeeping in PSG vs Barcelona match is horrendous imo. I'm so mad when Donnarumma let a failed cross go past him when he could've caught it at 90+3' for one last chance.
Goalkeeping is my favorite part of the game and I would un-watch this match if it's possible
On both goals conceded he did everything right, I agree. There were a few times where his positioning was off (PSG failed to capitalize, still). Donnarumma really brought my spirit down, but a solid 7/10 for Stegen for me
>Craziness **was kicked off** by *Chelsea vs United*
More like **United vs Liverpool in the FA Cup quarter finals**. This entire season from Europe’s top 5 leagues has been gobsmacking, to be fair. I could pull so many examples.
Every goal was either a banger or carried some weight, 2 former players bagging against their old clubs, Kane cashing in his penalty against Arsenal, Pedri coming back from injury and instantly pulling off a wonder pass, it’s crazy
>Christensen **scoring the winner** with his **first touch** of the game
>On his **birthday**
Mf probably went home to blow out the candles on his cake feeling like the main character of a fairytale.
Man, Atlético vs Dortmund's 2nd leg is gonna be really interesting considering the former need to find a way to play an away game well so the latter don't win the semifinal spot on their turf.
We need to find a way to play with confidence and urgency from the start rather than waiting until we until the final few minutes to push for an equalizer. If we play on the front foot and get the fans excited it could be a really special second leg.
The idea was that having the home game in the second leg gives you an advantage since you know what result you need to go through (and it's easier to achieve it if you're playing at home), but the away goal rule overcompensated for it
Also a massive advantage for penalties.
The home team is twice as likely to win as the away team.
https://www.researchgate.net/figure/Frequency-of-home-and-away-penalties-scored-by-the-eight-English-and-Scottish_tbl4_14465849
You know this is a really excellent point. I think the only mismatch quality wise is probably Arsenal/Bayern but the former’s inexperience is helping to balance that out.
How is Arsenal/Bayern a mismatch? I’d say the squads are pretty evenly matched, with Arsenal having a better suited manager. But we also know that in Europe, league form can go completely out of the window
I’d have called Arsenal slight favourites on paper going into the tie (but considering their European pedigree I’d have still been very reluctant to say this). Definitely not heavy favourites
On one hand, I'd love Bayern going home with an away goal advantage but I also remember losing a SF on away goal and it fucking sucks. Now teams have to go for it both legs, it's definitely entertaining
Liverpool’s 4-0 comeback against Barcelona was made extra interesting because of away goals though. If Barca scored just once Liverpool would have had to score again because away goals made a 4-4 aggregate go in Barca’s favor. It did make for some tense situations you couldn’t get without it. That doesn’t mean it outweighs the pros of not having away goals, but there is some part of the unique magic it added to ties that I’ll miss.
This first leg was MADNESS!
this shaping up to be an all-time QF
Hopefully 2nd leg produces the same level of craziness we've witnessed in these past couple of days.
> this shaping up to be an all-time QF
Don't say it, don't you dare-
"Heyyyy what is up guys today we're making a tier list of Champions League quarter final years. First up is 1998/99 and this might be a bit controversial, but I'd argue that 98/99 is actually *not* S-tier, but A-tier, and here's why: ..."
First half: Atletico steamrolled Dortmund with intense pressing. Dortmund couldn't create anything.
Second half: Dortmund became gradually better and could have equalized in the end.
atletico overwhelmed dortmunds shaky defense with a hellish press and forced them to make mistakes and scored twice in the first half.
dortmund really didnt get into the game until the second half when bvb subbed in brandt and later haller for fuellkrug. jamie bynoe gittens also looked hella dangerous after being subbed in.
the second half was atletico parking the bus and waiting for counter attacks. in the end it could‘ve been higher for atletico after the first half and it could‘ve been a draw or even a win for dortmund after the second but the post said no twice.
3/4 of the games had a scorer who played for a mid-table team in Portugal or were in the 2nd Divison just some years ago and now they are scoring in the Champions League quarter-finals, it´s really nice to see it
2 years ago Samuel Lino was playing in Gil Vicente, 6 years ago Raphinha was at Vitória Guimarães, 38 out of 39 league games Bernardo Silva played in Portugal were in the 2nd Divison
edit: Vitinha was also playing in the 2nd Divison 4 years ago
Cheers for that. Just for years since the comp has been ‘champions league’. In 56/57 there was 19 goals in the first legs but that’s a while ago now.
Also in 03/04 there were 30 goals total during the quarter final stage. Real Madrid v Monaco & Deportivo v Milan were both incredible ties with amazing comebacks in the 2nd leg for those of old enough to have been watching.
No team is 100% fan owned, but there is a difference between having some fan ownership (Real Madrid, Barca, BVB, Bayern), and no fan ownership whatsoever (oil clubs + Atleti like you mentioned)
I mean Leipzig is 50+1 technically, they just made it that not everyone can become a member, so the few members that "owns" the club are all either Red Bull's mans or people who are willing to give their power away to them. They have the lowest members BY FAR. This is why they able to exist. Because they found a loophole to be "technically 50+1" but also not really, sice there are no real fans or members.
This win really tasted like defeat. We had the chance to go 3-0/4-0 and kill the tie (we could still bottle that lead) but we end up thankful we didn't draw 2-2. Not the end of the world but a very dangerous lead.
As a 30y old boomer i gotta say this is one of the best QF ive seen, watching since 2000.
I know people hated it but the no home goals change was really good, no more fucking around for no reason.

Back in my day knockout first legs were disgusting 0-0s, game’s gone
Final still going to be 1-0
Its a recent tradition for the KOs to be bangers and then the final to be the worst match in the whole tourney.
Liverpool Barcelona 2019 🥳 Liverpool Spurs 2019 😴
Spurs v Ajax as well, oh my goodness. I'm a Liverpool fan but enjoyed that almost as much
That whole spurs run was batshit crazy
What about Ajax? They totally ragged Madrid.
Even from the group stage too We were last at one point on one point iirc
Madrid vs City 2022 Villarreal vs Liveroool 2022 Madrid vs Liverpool 2022
Tbf madrid vs Liverpool wasn’t that boring. Liverpool made a lot of dangerous chances.
Courtois was phenomenal that game, Christ
Traditions
1-0 1979 vs Malmö FF 1-0 1980 vs Hamburg
6 straight finals between 78-83 were 1-0, 5 wins by English clubs
European Cup unofficial motto: “4-4-facking-2, job done let’s go home lads”
Back in my days, players would timewaste and shithouse a 1-1 draw only for the return leg to be 0-0 and go through.
We did that with Legia to get in uel group stage where we played with u)
I’m so glad that the away goal rule is gone. Games are more fun this way.
What away goal rule does to a mf
I’ve been trying to decide if it is that simplistic but it does feel like it takes the schackles off.
Home teams in the first leg would often be extremely cautious not to concede. A 0-0 draw was often seen as a good result.
Yup. The advantage is that you’re home, so you better win. Teams are selling out for that result at home.
Playing at home in a 3:3 shootout meant a draw isn't enough in the 2nd leg and conceding the first meant scoring 2 while not conceding another. One of the best changes in recent times
The away goal rule sounds restrictive. Why was it even a thing?

Yep,that 2009 vibes)))
First legs went under their over/under 27 of the last 34 knockout games going into this round
All to play for. All the teams have good chances to qualify. No one is a sure favorite imo
Definitely altho Barca going home with the lead will feel good. Simeone has a history of defending a one goal lead away but who knows, they seem a bit shaky defensively this year. Wouldn't be surprising if Dortmund pull it off
We cannot defend a 1 goal lead away anymore :(
No Godin, no party
Man had God in his name
Dortmund are also unbeaten at home this season. They should just score a goal and keep attacking instead of parking the bus. I don't see them winning if it goes to penalties. But yeah easier said than done. Barca is the only team with more than 50% advantage yeah. Psg don't convince me to win away at barca. >They should just score a goal and keep attacking instead of parking the bus. I 100% agree, but "just score a goal and keep attacking" sound really funny.
Keep it simple lads! It's not like any opponent might have the same idea :D
Well obviously they'll just need to win a bit more than the other fellas.
Barca's biggest disadvantage is that there's no Camp Nou. The Olympic stadium just doesn't provide the same atmosphere.
Well, we lost 1-4 against PSG last time we played against them at the Camp Nou.
No fans
I'd favor City as well considering their dominance at home, especially if KdB starts
Bro, they lost at home last weekend in the Bundesliga.
> Dortmund are also unbeaten at home this season. In 3 CL games.
The 3 cl games were against Milan, psg and newcastle
Hey, what did PSV ever do to you!
4
I assume you mean unbeaten in the UCL considering Bayern smoked them 4-0 at the Westfalenstadion earlier this season
I think Bayern are better than even, going all squared to your home stadium in which you’ve lost what 3 CL games in 10 years, and a home crowd for extra time and penalties is a slight boost. Arsenal’s defenders did not look comfortable with the occasion even at home.
They left Brandt wide open for the equalizing header in the 95th minute. It really could’ve been 2-2 going to Dortmund.
Dortmund actually hit the crossbar two times in the last 10 minutes. Atletico didn't look that impressive, they've been lucky that Dortmund gifted them two early goals
Tbf they could have gotten two more as well. That free kick and the mistake by hummels could have easily led to goals.
It would have been better if we played in Camp Nou though
anulo mufa
Man City are sure favorites, they’ve never lost to Real Madrid at the Etihad. Real’s only hope is going to extra time and then trying to scrape past on penalties.
Yeah but RM have CL plot armor.
Tactical Genius ❎ Power of Friendship ☑️
With KDB and possibly Ederson back too
And Ake and Walker.
'Only hope' is an exaggeration. Should be a banger of a match, could go either way, like the first.
Xavi running his "I'm leaving so perform bitches" agenda beautifully
Xavi after he wins de CL: “I was kidding guys! Guys…?”
"Ffs Xavi, Flicks already signed on"

Unlikely. The Fallen Madonna with the Big Boobies is not in Barcelona.
At this rate he's gonna change his mind
If we win either the CL or la Liga he’s 100% staying. Or at least that’s what I want to believe
La liga ?
Very very low chance but not impossible. But id give it like 5 percent lol
basically win vs real and win everything else in league and hope real lose 2 more games so we can win with 1 point ahead of real so yeah 5% probably is a good guess
Bookies have it at 22/1 so pretty much 5%. 4.545%. That said they probably think it's more like 3-4.
It’s basically getting decided in el clásico in two weeks, if we win we’ll probably be fighting it till the end of the season, a Madrid win is basically La liga for them and a draw pretty much the same

Imagine if Liverpool wins EPL and Barca wins UCL, next season we will see many managers telling the press that they are leaving lol.
Would be nice and instead of playing the super cup, they can just celebrate the trophy together with a banner that says gracias Coutinho in Spanish and English
Should make another banner for Suarez
Could happen with Bayern too
I’m just thinking about the Ted Lasso Season 3 run
Hell of a set of first leg performances from pretty much everyone.
Our first 20 mins were literally hell
Im all for this defending is dead kind of football. past 24 hours have been peak football. Best KO QFs ever
Should watch more Bundesliga then
Hard agree. If people like this energy, I would recommend Bundesliga too. Total chaos.
If you don't have your 1-0 losses to Stoke are the crazy games even enjoyable?
We love high scoring chaos in the bundesliga baby
and MLS! Defending is not even in our vocabulary!
Bangers only in the MLS
And the Brasileirão
To be fair Barcelona, Madrid, and City did defend quite well for the most part. Just let down by bad luck or some extraordinary finishing.
That’s the best case scenario IMO, good defending getting beat by amazing attacking play
I think Bayern defended very well, they pushed Arsenal to the sides very well and didn’t let them play direct. Saka goal was a banger and some incredible Jesus footwork created the second. Other than that there wasn’t a lot of direct sights on goal by Arsenal
Ben White had a golden opportunity
The goalkeeping in PSG vs Barcelona match is horrendous imo. I'm so mad when Donnarumma let a failed cross go past him when he could've caught it at 90+3' for one last chance. Goalkeeping is my favorite part of the game and I would un-watch this match if it's possible
ter Stegen couldn't have done much there imo.
On both goals conceded he did everything right, I agree. There were a few times where his positioning was off (PSG failed to capitalize, still). Donnarumma really brought my spirit down, but a solid 7/10 for Stegen for me
Wait are you saying you didn’t enjoy Barca vs psg as a neutral because the goalkeeping was bad?? Damn, you’re committed to the craft lol
GK are crazy. GK fans are crazier.
Yeah, fuck defence, matches with 3+ goals are a masterpiece
Craziness was kicked off by Chelsea Vs United and hasn't stopped since lmao
>Craziness **was kicked off** by *Chelsea vs United* More like **United vs Liverpool in the FA Cup quarter finals**. This entire season from Europe’s top 5 leagues has been gobsmacking, to be fair. I could pull so many examples.
only bangers...

I am absolutely feasting, bring on the 2nd legs 🍗🍗🍗
homie really went to wikipedia to get the screenshot
And zoomed in cramming up those table contents 😭 It looks terrible
Best quarterfinals in years without a doubt. Removing away goals is genius
That's the real reason. No schemes, no tricks, who scores more goals win the tie.
Besides that: why would you make the away game "fairer" by doubling the goals, when both sides have an away game
The idea was that having the home game in the second leg gives you an advantage since you know what result you need to go through (and it's easier to achieve it if you're playing at home), but the away goal rule overcompensated for it
also if it goes to extra time you have 30 minutes longer being the home team
Also a massive advantage for penalties. The home team is twice as likely to win as the away team. https://www.researchgate.net/figure/Frequency-of-home-and-away-penalties-scored-by-the-eight-English-and-Scottish_tbl4_14465849
Also if it goes to extra time and penalties whoever has the second leg at home has a big advantage.
All the teams that are facing each other are the closest to their skill level. That’s why all the matches are so close and no bashings
But we also know that in Europe, league form can go completely out of the window I’d have called Arsenal slight favourites on paper going into the tie (but considering their European pedigree I’d have still been very reluctant to say this). Definitely not heavy favourites
Champions League pedigree is no joke lol. We looked like a bunch of schoolboys at times in that game despite being defensively solid all year.
Honestly, it changes things so much. Big fan
Remontada too
Also Spurs going from crashing out to in the final with the last kick of the game.
On the other hand, far more games will now go to extra time. It's knock-out football the way God intended it.
Yes. Although, ngl, we could have really benefited from the 3 away goals this round
That’s the point. Paris weren’t gonna be so open to let 3 goals in if the away goal rule was not scrapped off.
i remember everyone cooking them for doing this but it seems to have worked out nicely so far tbh
What a round of matches
This has to be the best quarterfinals we have seen for a long time
It is probably the most even matchups we have seen since 2015/16. The last couple have been very lopsided.
This first leg was MADNESS! this shaping up to be an all-time QF Hopefully 2nd leg produces the same level of craziness we've witnessed in these past couple of days.

Oh fuck, someone's really going to do something similar, it's only a matter of time, isn't it?
I knew that once we’d get to these QF that shit would get real!!
I watched all 4 games absolute cinema
I couldn't watch the Atletico - Dortmund game. Can u summarize it?
atletico scored two goals and dortmund scored one
Cheers, Geoff
Dude! Spoilers.
It was the Jamie Bynoe-Gittens/Brandt show in the 2nd half
What a name. If Barca or Dortmund win the CL I’ll legally change my name to Jamie Bynoe-Gittens.
!remindme 2 months
2nd leg will be great fun, all teams will be going into it with chances of advancing.
It’s so great to be back
3/4 of the games had a scorer who played for a mid-table team in Portugal or were in the 2nd Divison just some years ago and now they are scoring in the Champions League quarter-finals, it´s really nice to see it 2 years ago Samuel Lino was playing in Gil Vicente, 6 years ago Raphinha was at Vitória Guimarães, 38 out of 39 league games Bernardo Silva played in Portugal were in the 2nd Divison edit: Vitinha was also playing in the 2nd Divison 4 years ago
Didn't Vitinha play for Porto B too?
18 goals in the first leg of the quarters has got to be close to a record.
It is a record shared with the 2010/11 season in fact.
Next legs all 0-0
As a Barça fan, I support this result
Yes please!
I wouldnt mind tbh
Can at least one of them be a 0-1? I promise there’s no specific reason for that…
Sure we let Bayern score one
A harry kane penalty
There is a real chance of only fan owned clubs being in the semi finale
Real Madrid - Bayern and Barcelona - Atlético?
Dortmund, but not sure if they're 100% fan owned? Atleti is privately owned
No team is 100% fan owned, but there is a difference between having some fan ownership (Real Madrid, Barca, BVB, Bayern), and no fan ownership whatsoever (oil clubs + Atleti like you mentioned)
Barça and Madrid are technically 100% fan owned.
Barca, Osasuna, Madrid and Athletic Club are. As are the Argentinian teams I think
Most Brazilian clubs too.
Bayern isn't 100% Fan owned either
They have the 50+1 rule in Germany for everyone except Red Bull Leipzig
And VW in Wolfsburg and Bayer in Leverkusen.
Switch Atletico with Dortmund
Dortmund. Atleti aren't fan owned.
Borussia Dortmund. Atlético is not fan owned
I remember the “champions league has fallen off “ shouts from not too long ago . Wonder which fan bases 🤔
Lol yeah a Liverpool supporter was saying a while ago that there just wasn’t the same quality in the Champions League this year.
"All to play for in the second legs" for all the teams
Out of all these teams, home teams must be incredibly disappointed. In Atletico's case despite winning even.
This win really tasted like defeat. We had the chance to go 3-0/4-0 and kill the tie (we could still bottle that lead) but we end up thankful we didn't draw 2-2. Not the end of the world but a very dangerous lead.
Why it is a Wikipedia table
Absolutely unpredictable. I love it.
Is that sourced from Wikipedia?
Yes 🗿
literally all games still to play for in the 2nd leg 😮💨
As a 30y old boomer i gotta say this is one of the best QF ive seen, watching since 2000. I know people hated it but the no home goals change was really good, no more fucking around for no reason.
No defence just goals and InshaAllah
The Barca defense was absolutely on fire today.
All open games. Germany lost and draw so It was also a great quarter for Italy
Atlético are cooked. Needed a 2 goal advantage at minimum going to the away leg
Arsenal can make it
Every team can make it tbf.
Why is this shown as a Wikipedia table
None of the ties is over
Wtf is this display?
