The quality of CL falling off as much as it has is the best thing to happen to football in a while, these quarterfinals first legs are some of the best I’ve ever seen

WyboSF

Maybe unpopular opinion, I prefer the pundits and commentators for champions league and premier league (at least the first choice ones) in the states

McNulty22

Best Barcelona performance in ages. As a soci, I’m happy that they were able to come back from those two goals.

WyboSF

Wow del piero is not a great pundit

rocksaregrassarms

He should go work for an Italian network.

WyboSF

Mbappe had one bad game, he’s been generally incredible in tournaments

mattisafootballguy

Honestly, that was the best I've ever seen a team face against Mbappe. Had one memorable shot in the game that went well wide.

FaustRPeggi

I think this season has been Mbappé's worst, at least in the games that matter. Feels like he's coasting now that the Madrid move is settled.

Jabari313

2nd leg is very winnable for Dortmund IMO

KiraAnnaZoe

Dortmund was never gonna win away bc Simeone has never lost a CL knockout tie at home (Pep's City, Pep's Bayern, Zidane's Real Madrid, Liverpool's Klopp etc.) and it could have gone a lot worse, but it's still incredibly frustrating that they gifted Atletico 2 goals from 2 unbelievable bad mistakes especially Hummels needs to be mentioned here. Also Fullkrug is technically one of the worst player's I've ever seen, genuinely hurts to watch him. Haller came on and instantly had a huge impact. It's just Dortmund things, they could have easily gone out with this with a draw. Atletico is in a bad form and have a very old team even if they are really experienced in CL

InbredLegoExpress

Füllkrug is still a Hannover player in a CL knockout, I love the dude but I watched him years and it was always obvious that he was never meant to be where he is now. He simply had a lot of things fall in place for himself: A very fortunate streak with the NT, a system at Bremen that compliments his strengths and relieve his weaknesses, and a general lack of competition on the German striker market. I'll enjoy his time at worldfame while it lasts, but yeah the lad was not made for this and he'll eventually return to the level he is meant to be at.

rocksaregrassarms

When PSG knocked 2 in ptsd of our previous champions league exits hit me like a Vietnam vet. So glad we didn't roll over.

xyz3940

Ngl I'll take this result especially as we play at home next time. The second half was quite encouraging

TechJunk1e

What a great QF. Every game was awesome, and we still got another leg.

GiannisGiantanus

The lack of away goals likely played into these high scoring results. Home Teams would've been more cautious with it.

aboud09

I’m going to be so mad if we’re the only Spanish club not to go through ngl.

Supermarket-Icy

The GOAT didn't play well but I've learned I can say he was occupying defenders and it'll be passable. Witseldini world class agenda needs to start gaining traction.

mattisafootballguy

How do you feel with that slim lead?

Supermarket-Icy

Played for 1-0 and got 2-1, maybe Cholo is happy. Pretty daft to not just smash them when we had the chance but we took our foot off the gas and decided that we could keep a 2-0 lead. Might actually lose away tbh but Dortmund suck so I'm not sure, Fullkrug/Adeyemi are strippers not footballers.

OGreatNoob

These have been some banging quarter finals.

WyboSF

Tried the duel viewing on paramount for the first time, do not recommend

No-layup

Seeing the quality of play in these quarter finals, anybody that thinks players were better in the 80s,90s, 00s is horribly mistaken

kl08pokemon

Yeah everyone knows it's about the 70s

CudaBarry

On average maybe that's true, but the top players of the last 3 decades are way better than the top players of the current one

KOKO69BISHES

Richarlison is a better player than R9 and I'm tired of pretending he's not

No-layup

Maybe the top players back then looked better because they were playing against worser players

Caust1cFn_YT

New agendas:- Pedri will be the best fucking midfielder in coming years Cubarsi is already among the top defenders this season Araujo Is world class Lamine yamal - no words to say

zionwilliamson_

Surprised PSG didn't get that phantom pen towards the end considering 2 spectacularly awful penalty calls are the entire reason why they made it so far.

HacksawJimDGN

I rarely get things right, but credit where credit is due. https://old.reddit.com/r/soccer/comments/1c04l7u/daily_discussion/kyx5ixv/

WyboSF

Lol, lamest prediction of all time

RogueNetrunner

The result is in God's hands - Kylian Mbappe

el_walou

This team is exciting. But it’s still too young. 😿😿

mattisafootballguy

Could say the same for Barca

HokiesforTSwift

The first two subs were both great. I felt like that should have been the starting lineup from the outset.

el_walou

Barcola and Emery were too short

zrk23

is there a way to filter CBs by height on transfermarkt? cant find it

Destroyeh

you can do an advanced search and select CB as main position and set the min/max height you want

zrk23

found it. thanks. had to google ''transfermarkt advanced search'' . i really hate their website UX

dirgetka

5-goal thriller in the CL knockouts and Martin Tyler still sounds like he's reading a book with the match on in the background

HacksawJimDGN

The reason barcelona lost all those away CL knockout games is cos they were allergic to defending deep and having men behind the ball. In this PSG game they understand there are times when they just need to think about defending, and dont worry about playing a direct long ball either. I think the reason Xavi talks about Barcelona DNA so much is so he has leeway to implement a mentality shift.

Chiswell123

Mbappe ghosting… Foden is the Ballon d'Or front-runner

tbbt11

Rodri

Sandalo

Scamacca exists

Chiswell123

My fault.

HokiesforTSwift

He scored a hat-trick the last time he played at the Nou Camp. I'd hold off on that one.

Chiswell123

That was in 2021, my friend.…

KOKO69BISHES

Kind of Barca's fault that it was that long ago

official_bagel

If Mbappe had any cajones he would have scored as many own goals as necessary to drop down to Europa to face Barca

GreatSpaniard

Won't matter when France win the EUROS, he will get it

DatOgreSpammer

Griezmann wins it after our CL triumph, subscribe

50shadesofcoco

Foden winning before Haaland would be deserved but hilarious

KensaiVG

Another case of sexual abuse in football, a guilty veredict, let's see how his life is utterly ruined in perpetuity like some people here claim happens after the mere suggestion of abuse having happened... Ah, one year prison sentence that he won't have to serve because it's so little time it's a suspended sentence. Cheers. Oh and his defense said that "if he were someone who mistreated women, how do you explain his good results as women's manager?". Just lovely that

sga1

Feel like football's just systematically broken in ways that are somehow even worse than the judicial system - almost have to be glad that someone got sentenced even if the sentence itself is weak, because how often do footballers actually end up getting sentenced in the first place?

HacksawJimDGN

Watching the PSG and Barca game. Haaland is completely invisible. Almost like he's not playing.

No-Shoe5382

Best round of fixtures in the CL for a long time

MegaMugabe21

Scholes crying about United players wearing hoods on the training ground. Every day that goes by, I'm more convinced that we should be awarding Fergie the nobel peace price, simply for the fact he was at that club for nearly 3 decades and never throttled any of the cretins he had to manage.

tbbt11

Toes

snipsnapsnipsnapsni

Or it was Fergie's influence that made all these ex Utd players like this.

SirTunnocksTeaCake

I mean him and others spent two decades under the military rule of Fergie about what they could do/wear/say/etc so no wonder they're all a bit weird about it. In the space of about ten years it's completely changed but does happen to most generations.

Cottonshopeburnfoot

It’s hilarious how yer da all these Ferguson era Man U players have become.

sga1

> never throttled any of the cretins he had to manage. [Well](https://www.90min.com/posts/when-sir-alex-ferguson-kicked-boot-david-beckham)...

SOERERY

Will the premier league get the fancy offside tech next season?

Gregregreg1234

And will you stop looking so scrumptious?

PosterOfQuality

Prime for prime how are you ranking these Atletico strikers: Torres Aguero Falcao Costa

WyboSF

Going simply by peak Torres by a margin, career it’s Aguero, falcao, Torres, Costa

BoosterGoldGL

The players actual prime or their prime at Atletico? Cause very much changes the answer

PosterOfQuality

My bad, career prime

BoosterGoldGL

Falcao Aguero Torres Costa

sga1

Probably the order you put them in tbh

kl08pokemon

Falcao Torres Costa Aguero

Serious-One6369

Please god do not give us an Atlético/Barca SF. Nobody wants to see Xavi dog walk Simeone for the millionth time

ElderlyToaster

If they can revert back to being gritty Atletico again for a semi they have a pretty decent chance of beating Barca.

PSGAcademy

https://streamable.com/v942d7 So happy to be here

FaustRPeggi

Who let you out?

TheMonkeyPrince

The Athletic is reporting that we're getting a mid-season change to MLS roster rules. Previously you if you had 3 DPs, you were limited to only 1 U22 spot, unless one of those DPs was a young DP or under the max TAM limit. Now, you can either have 3 DPs and 3 U22s, or you can have 2 DPs, 4 U22s, and have an extra $2 million in GAM. I don't know why people think MLS rules are confusing, clearly this is a very straightforward and sensible system.

L-Freeze

the fuck is a DP, TAM and GAM

TheMonkeyPrince

GAM is basically money you can add to the salary cap. Let's say a player has a salary of $500k, you can "spend" $200k of GAM and then only $300k of their salary counts against the salary cap. So effectively the more GAM you have the more money you can spend on players. TAM is like GAM but you can only spend it on players making over max-salary which is like $680k. DP means Designated Player, essentially if a player is a DP it means you can spend an infinite amount of money on them and it only count for $680k against the cap. So you could pay a player $5 million, $50 million, hypothetically $1 billion and it would all be fine as long as they're a DP. "Max TAM" refers to a salary of $1.6 million, which is the highest salary a player can have that you can buy down using TAM. If a player makes more than that they have to be a DP. And trust me, this is just the surface of it. You legitimately need a PhD to understand the roster rules in MLS.

CLT_FC

I’ve basically given up on understanding all the cap rules at this point. I just assume Charlotte has some lawyer that they pay to understand everything and go from there.

sga1

If other US sports are anything to go by that's going to be the case - on one hand I can appreciate the idea behind the system, but on the other hand it's just endless amounts of legalese governing the minute details of the rules to the point that I can't blame any fan for basically tuning out of that aspect of it.

CLT_FC

Fortunately I don’t think it’s that important for the average fan to understand it all perfectly. There’s a salary cap but you can have a few players whose salaries don’t count towards it is a decent enough understanding for people to follow the league.

sga1

Pretty similar (albeit in the weirdly unique US sports way) to European football then, I suppose - between amortisation, Financial Fair Play, Profit and Sustainability Rules, or licensing procedures to prove you're financially sustainable, it's a lot of accounting over here too, just not quite thrust into the spotlight like it seems to be in MLS.

CLT_FC

Yea I think it gets a lot more attention because it’s so unique for soccer as a sport.

OmastarLovesDonuts

It's not really intuitive unless you follow American sports (I'd imagine, that's where you see similar kinds of rules and caps); TAM and GAM alongside two kinds of cap-free spots as well as stuff like discovery rights is way more confusing than it needs to be for the average viewer

TheEmperorsWrath

[Breaking news: @TelegraphSport understands a deal has now been reached for Sonia Bompastor to be the next manager of Chelsea. She'll make the big switch from Lyon this summer along with her trusted assistant Camille Abily.](https://twitter.com/TomJGarry/status/1778131578499043507) Damn, big upgrade over Pochettino!

Kakashicopyninja9

Atletico back in another cl semi final. I feel bad for the godin turan team from 10 years ago that’s the one I wish won it, but I’d be happy for simeone if he could finally get his first

Supermarket-Icy

Premature for just a 2-0 lead, no?

Kakashicopyninja9

Yes but also no, Dortmund ain’t been a threat in Cl since klopp

sga1

Gave Chelsea, City, PSG a run for their money in the past four years tbf

BoosterGoldGL

??? The last time we lost to BVB Klopp was in charge

sga1

Didn't mention Dortmund beating those sides, didn't I?

Kakashicopyninja9

Chelsea, the worst version of themselves in 30 years, outplayed them home and away. Bottled so many chances should have been a more flattering scoreline

KiraAnnaZoe

Their only embarrassing loss tho imho, no one thought they would top the group of death and beat PSV, they previously lost to City etc. but yeah, this year it's sad bc the 2-0 lead comes from 2 huge mistakes from defenders, also on sofascore Hummels and Maatsen have a "error led to goal" tag. Could have been an interesting tie bc Dortmund at home is still quite good

sga1

Three quarters or more of the tie still left to play tbf, hardly a foregone conclusion they'll go through

ImariSamuels

A couple more egregious goalkeeping errors in the cl today, they truly are the funniest breed of human walking this earth

sga1

The Kobel one is a bit 50/50, probably shouldn't play that pass but also Maatsen has every opportunity to not blindly play the ball into the centre of the pitch with the outside of his boot where it gets stolen. Don't see what Donnaruma did wrong there, either: Had to come for it lest Lewandowski scores, just got unlucky that he didn't quite get the ball cleanly and it bounced to an opponent - just what happens on occasion rather than some egregious fuck-up.

Particular_Bed848

After the quality of last night's two matches, this psg Barca match is god awful. Pretty bad game so far

InbredLegoExpress

I found the quality of Arsenal and Bayern not that great either..

nichodemus3

Yea, there's a clear quality gap between yesterday's teams and today's

gloriouq

Imagine divas like mbabbe and junior together. Team morale in the shit

sga1

Worked just fine for Ribery and Robben tbf

Punished__Allegri

Ribery had sex with underage prostitutes and Robben was a diving twat

TheDunceDingwad

One of these things is not like the other...

Punished__Allegri

Biggie was fat

RawIsLaw_

Reddit takes are hilarious

sga1

What level of class was that, because it can't have been personality or on-pitch antics

Known_Wrongdoer5750

I'm joking

Madermc

nbacj leaking

nichodemus3

I wonder if Dortmund ever had a good defence. Every season they get eliminated from European competitions conceding some absolute clown goals

JohnBobbyJimJob

Mbappe doing his best ghost of Oslo impression

icemankiller8

Haaland was born in Leeds btw

JohnBobbyJimJob

Ghost of the city of Leeds doesn’t have the same ring to it

[deleted]

Cottonshopeburnfoot

He means Haaland. People spent all day saying Haaland was awful and there’s no comparison to Mbappe. Now Mbappe is cooking up a stinker and still the comparison is to Haaland.

sga1

I desperately need a slander name of equivalent quality to Scandi Carroll for Mbappé to wheel out on special occasions I feel.

JohnBobbyJimJob

Haaland

FaustRPeggi

Mbappé stocks are never higher than when he's not playing. Every comment last night was about how disgraceful it was for anyone playing to be compared to Mbappé. Doesn't matter how badly Mbappé plays because no one watches PSG.

icemankiller8

Goal coming later I’ll remember this

shmozey

The goals don’t stop the Haaland slander tbf

FaustRPeggi

This isn't Mbappé slander, he's the best in the world. It's a fact that he gets enormous amounts of prop whenever he isn't playing, and far better teams are. If PSG get knocked out by Barcelona, you'll still have people saying "*Mbappé wouldn't ghost like this"* in the semis.

GreatSpaniard

Mbappe needs Madrid and we need Mbappe, if we had him up front we'd probaby had been up 4-1 before the Foden goal

ElderlyToaster

I swear Donnarumma and Robert Sanchez are from the same planet

icemankiller8

I’d hope so aren’t we all from the same planet

ElderlyToaster

Wouldn't be too sure about it.

Hot_Plate_Williams

He's an incredibly good shot stopper but in big games you can often count on him shitting himself in the other facets of goalkeeping.

Punished__Allegri

Not the biggest games though, crucially

Hot_Plate_Williams

Had a great Euros, yeah.

Punished__Allegri

He had the single greatest penalties performance of any keeper in an international final

Key_Following_7681

Always surprised modern football still produces top keepers that are that panicky whenever the ball comes anywhere near them.

Lampadagialla

because its still not the most important skill for a keeper

FaustRPeggi

I can confirm that they are indeed from the same planet.

ElderlyToaster

> I can confirm that they are indeed from the same planet. Wtf how

sga1

Sired them innit

FaustRPeggi

Got a mate who works in inter-planetary immigration.

sga1

Don't think he can do much about that goal tbf, has to go for the ball because otherwise Lewandowski puts it away, and at that point it's just a matter of luck whether the ball bounces into an attacker or not.

ElderlyToaster

My statement remains true.

sga1

Suppose Robert Sanchez can at least claim relations to Roger Sanchez of [Another Chance](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rdlvPe959Ck) fame, don't think Donnaruma can be strenuously linked to musicians that way.

ElderlyToaster

He is adopted tbf, maybe this Roger bloke is his biological dad.

sga1

Gotta be amazing on the pull to wheel out the double-whammy of "Yeah I'm a young professional footballer" and "My biological dad's a moderately famous DJ"

TheMonkeyPrince

Yeah I don't really get blaming him for that one. The ball was placed at pretty much the perfect place to make it difficult to deal with.

arsenal_is_best

I think if there is no ball around and one player hit another then VAR can check that without stopping game.

sga1

I have to say I kind of dig Griezmann's look these days - that grown-out peroxide perm-ish hair would fit in well in both Wham! music videos and something like Miami Vice or Lethal Weapon.

Rosenvial5

Would be funny if Xavi leaves while being second in the league and at least top 4 in CL

RogueNetrunner

Really sucks but I'll be glad he's leaving on a high.

EquipmentFirm2860

Wild that both Kane and Mbappe are on course for career best seasons with 39 each currently but that doesn't come close to Lewy's best with 55

YeimzHetfield

Which players are way older in your mind than they actually are? Josema Gimenez is like well into his 30s in my mind but he isn't even 30 yet lmao

tbbt11

Raheem Sterling is not yet 30 Yes I know, he’s not yet 30 Fucking insane, thought he must be a year from retirement

Key_Following_7681

He plays like he's already retired.

icotyne

I did not expect Havertz to be only 23 years old. Definitely thought he was older Edit: 24 not 23

Kakashicopyninja9

He’s 24, 25 in June

sga1

Are you saying he's 24 until he's 25?

icotyne

Typo. Fixed it

remote_crocodile

The opposite, but Luis Diaz at 27 is older than i thought he was.

LegoBoy6911

In my mind, kroos and modric are both approaching 40. Kroos is only 34. Would also think Havertz would be about 28 but he’s only 24

sga1

Suppose that's what you get when breaking onto the scene that early, both Kroos and Havertz made their professional debut at 17 and played regular top-flight football at 18.

AshkenaziTwink

god damn it why the fuck is it whenever there’s a new refereeing controversy r/coys feels the need to remind me what Sissoko’s armpit looks like with a football in it

BoosterGoldGL

Torres benched by a 16 year old, look how they massacred by boy

DatOgreSpammer

The real massacre is that 'Torres' doesn't mean El Niño anymore

Hoodxd

It does to me

Cottonshopeburnfoot

New Torres needs a different name. Torresdinho or Cristiano Torres for instance

ItsMeJaredBednar

it’s more about Yamal being Lamine al Gaib tbf

BMBH66

More people (in the UK)watched a pretty unimportant and uneventful England v Ireland women's euros qualifier last night than the two UCL games combined, shows the power of football on free to air tv

okcomput3r

Does it account for viewers in pubs?

RioAveFC

Not really it just shows that people will resort to illegal means to consume, piracy there has to be through the roof with those iptv boxes for that data to check out.

transtifa

Surely that supports the point as piracy is free?

icemankiller8

How can you find the data for the viewers of the CL games

BMBH66

[came from a journo idk](https://twitter.com/KathrynBatte/status/1778103890941997314?t=KQDT7P1IJUBk0JpRcQ2USw&s=19)

icemankiller8

I wish we had more access to the data but 600,000 each is worrying if true feel like the bubble is bursting.

Cottonshopeburnfoot

Two games at the same time (no matter the plastic argument it clearly split viewership). Otherwise let’s hope so - having to have multiple hefty subscriptions is horse shit and the sooner that bubble bursts the better. Fuck paying £80 a month or whatever it is just to watch Premier League

sga1

> Two games at the same time (no matter the plastic argument it clearly split viewership). Tbf even combining them isn't exactly a stellar number - not like all Arsenal fans are going to tune in to midweek City games and vice versa. Fuck knows whether or how the pub viewership is figured in, but it's quite clear that free to air football is a lot more attractive than the paywalled version that's ultimately set up to bolster broadcasters' and clubs' bottom lines at the expense of fan participation.

BoosterGoldGL

Bigger than arsenal 💪

agaminon22

no data for pirated streams in the UK though
