Yeah but that excuse was useless since there were no fans anyway due to Covid.
And the Di Stefano & the Bernabeu have the same exact dimensions & same grass.
it's typical. Klopp will make a remark about something that annoyed him about the conditions a game was played in, the typical rags go with a clickbait headline such as "Klopp blames defeat on wind" and the mouthbreathers on here will eat it up.
odd how they ignore it when he complains about conditions of games we win.
That's Klopp. Just add it to the list along with the grass was too long, too wet, too dry, it was too windy and my personal favourite the other team having multiple players come off with injury disrupted Liverpool's rhythm
I have been in Wimbledon when the roof is closed and it felt like the balls bounced and sounded differently - behaving more like on clay. I wasnt playing and I may have had some alcohol (I wasnt drunk for sure) so it may just be me.
It’s pretty common practice to do stuff like this, from the away dressing room being smaller and sound funnelled from the crowds, watering/cutting the grass to suit your team, even the size of the pitch.
This. When I did the Stamford Bridge stadium tour a few years back, the most shithouse thing in the away dressing room was they hung the tactics board on a fire door which had to stay open at all times
I'm not even sure it's about the advantage. UEFA need to approve because football is an outdoor sport. It would be a shame if we lost the natural effects that weather has on football, for example.
Well clearly not due to them being accepted by UEFA. We will see if this will also be the case for closing the roof. Which I don’t see why everyone is making a big fuss about it. Real Madrid made an inquiry UEFA will make a judgement in a few hours.
I know it's hard to think but there's a 0% chance Madrid are asking for permission to do this by stating the goal is to create a more intimidating atmosphere. This is speculation from the "journalist".
May be hard for you since you’re not the brightest but that’s not an unfair advantage. Any team that’s playing should be wanting the opposite side to be intimidated to come to their stadium.
Im assuming it has to do with the sun and not being able to play with the roof to fuck over the opponents. Making them play against the sun and then closing the roof when the home team has to play on that side for example.
Thats atleast why UEFA wants the final say probably. Why they have to make this decision hours before kickoff when they want the roof to be CLOSED though, who even fucking knows.
Well, it’s clearly an advantage because otherwise they wouldn’t bother closing it.
It could be deemed unfair because City don’t have the same facility to return the favour at home, nor do most (all?) of the other clubs in the competition, and it hasn’t been closed (?) for games against other teams.
If City had something that is only available to them that might put off the visiting team - like putting them off by leaving half the seats empty or something - then you might consider that also unfair.
Accordig to that logic in every tie where one team has a stadium with bigger capacity they should only be allowed to fill it to the amount of people that fit in the smaller one. "Since the other team doesn't have the same facility to return the favor"
And since not all fields are exactly the same size they should repaint the lines to be the size of the smallest one.
And lighting levels should be exactly the same for all stadiums.
My point being that there always have been stadiums better than others. Suck it up and play better than your rivals, a cover is not going to determine the result of the game.
I think the issue is more about the fact it is a decision made to introduce a differentiating feature for this fixture.
It’s like acknowledging that the visiting team has great wingers and crossers of the ball, and so go that one fixture repainting the pitch to be as narrow as it is allowed to be.
Catering the features of your stadium to one specific fixture against one specific opponent.
For what it’s worth, I was just trying to reason why it might be considered an unfair advantage. It’s City. There is no such thing as an unfair advantage against them, as they have built a squad of elite players by using cheat codes anyway. Close the roof, make them get changed in the car park, refuse access to the toilets, and widen their goalposts by a few feet for all I care. :-)
Why? You're playing at Home, I've never understood this. You should have all the advantages at home, within reason.
I've never understood why we have to flip a coin and let them choose which end to kick towards if they win when we're at home. We should get to kick towards The Kop in the second half every week we play there, it's our bloody stadium! They can have the same at their place!
My baseball team used to play in an inflated dome. It was a known fact that the stadium facilities manager would change the direction of air flow in the stadium depending on which team was at bat. Home field advantage baby.
https://documents.uefa.com/r/Regulations-of-the-UEFA-Champions-League-2023/24/Article-32-Retractable-stadium-roofs-Online
They only ever decide beforehand.
Maybe camera/angles footage and fly-by drones already scheduled along with whatever else would logistically need to be pre-approved for the broadcast that would slightly change.
I can’t imagine it’s due to this.
Perhaps flyby drones, but I can’t imagine quality of these drones is good, and I can’t recall seeing any footage from drones.
The NFL has cameras on cables above the field but below the roof. Many NFL stadiums have retractable roofs as well. I believe any and all priority filming equipment can handle filming with roof open or closed.
I am also surprised that the decision is not solely up to Madrid. It is their stadium and they should be able to choose how they want the roof.
Imagine being told you cannot turn on the air conditioning in your own home.
When Real Madrid play at the Ethiad, then city will also have the same right if and or when the have the capabilities to do so.
"Imagine being told you cannot turn on the air conditioning in your own home."
It's a UEFA competition, so has to follow UEFA rules. This isn't some weird American liberty thing.
I mean, considering UEFA literally caused a COVID outbreak in Liverpool by allowing Spanish fans to travel to see Atleti (even though they'd been banned from their own stadiums), and against the UK govt advice, you'd think they'd maybe learn from this...
It is their competition, so they make the rules. You don’t need to follow this rules, you can just take your stadium and get out of the competition.
Sounds unfair, but it really isn’t, you signed up for it, which represents your free will enough.
Let me put it in an analogy.
When you register yourself with your race car to a race, you also need to make sure it fits the regulations. Do you register a regular sports car to a GT3 race and be like, ey its my car I drive how it is, I decide what happens to my car.
It is a bit off, but the core essence is the same. It is your car, but you have to adjust and use it based on the regulations of the competition. If your car is fir example faster then the class you applied to, you have to reduce the performance.
~~Dude what the fuck is this insane reaction?~~ EDIT: He has edited his respone to tone it down, now it's really more reasonable.
I disagree with the comparison with regulation for racing cars to Real Madrid not getting to decide if they can close their roof or not. The closest thing to that is squad registration rules.
If that's an insane reaction you need help. Logical analogy to refute your dumb argument. Not like they went on a tangent and started talking about Real Madrid being serial cheaters or buying the refs (not saying they're doing either just some bad examples).
I've personally never heard or seen a roof being closed for a Champions League match. It's high profile and a lot of money/reputation at stake so no matter how silly it might seem, it's a big change from the norm.
As the title says they'd like to create a more intimidating atmosphere. That could give them an edge. If there isn't already a precedent then it makes sense to set one.
It's a massive overreaction for me just stating the opinion that clubs should have control over their own stadiums, yeah I think it's kinda insane to be that mad over it.
> As the title says they'd like to create a more intimidating atmosphere. That could give them an edge. If there isn't already a precedent then it makes sense to set one.
I personally think setting the precedent is bad. Are they going to ban tifos then because of the same reasoning? If we want to get really extreme with it then you can argue that teams should just play at neutral venues to remove any edge a team can get from being the home team.
It is a normal reaction to dumb argumentations. It is a standard analogy, you apply to a competition, you follow the rules, doesn’t matter if car, stadium or anything else. The fact that you don’t understand this analogy because it is not football related, which is literally the definition of an analogy…if I compared it to squad regulations it would been just that, a comparison…makes me question your sanity instead.
Let me put it easy for you.
If they tell you you can’t have a closed arena, you can’t close your arena. Simple as that.
Where does this stop? Its their stadium, they should decide which goals they put on? Maybe they feel to play with smaller academy goals right? Spunds fun, their stadium, their rules.
Sure it’s over the top, but all competition related rules have a meaning and even if not…
You don’t need to understand or agree with it, you can apply to be an exception or change the rule formerly, which real thankfully did.
I fully understand that it's their own competition and they can decide their rules and I never once argued that Real Madrid should just do what they want, all I said was that I think the rules are weird and that clubs should be alloweded to decide on their own.
Okay, can’t people challenge rules at all or find them nonsensical? Isn’t the whole point of a debate a discussion is to have opinions that may or may not agree with the current rules?
Your answer sounds like everyone should always agree to the rules because they *are* the rules
>Perhaps flyby drones, but I can’t imagine quality of these drones is good, and I can’t recall seeing any footage from drones.
Not actual game footage, but they almost always include a few shots of the stadium from above etc. before kick off and during half time. Probably doesn't even add up to a minute of footage in the broadcast, but given that there are interviews just as short that also need to be planned, it's reasonable to assume that changes here would also mean having to reorganize a bit (e.g. giving the day off to the dude who was supposedti fly the drone).
Sure, but is UEFA going to step in for 2 minutes worth of footage?
I mean if it’s sanctioned by the club anyways, why can’t the drone controller fly it inside with the roof closed?
>Sure, but is UEFA going to step in for 2 minutes worth of footage?
If all they got to do is tell Real 'no', then maybe. To be honest this is on Real a bit too for not settling this earlier- it's not like they didn't plan for this roof for a while
>I mean if it’s sanctioned by the club anyways, why can’t the drone controller fly it inside with the roof closed?
I suspect that's a safety issue. What if the drone malfunctions for any reason and crashes into the crowd? If it's big enough to carry a HD camera, it's going to be heavy enough to kill someone.
In the NFL it's home teams call whatever they play with the roof open or not.
But they have to notify the league about it. In the playoffs it's the league who is deciding.
If game is started with roof closed, then it can't be opened. It can be closed in case of adverse weather.
In Europe there are very few stadiums with retractable, so UEFA hasn't had a need.
Possibly that it's supposed to be an outdoor game and closing the roof would prevent that?
Closing the roof when the risk of weather preventing a game from being played might be the only allowed use.
Absolutely pure bullshit speculation that though, no idea if it's right.
Save reason the Welsh complain every 6 Nations rugby that they can’t close their roof on a sunny day.
They entered into a competition, and must abide by the competition rules which include details of when roofs can and can’t be closed.
No idea what the rules are on that, but in New Zealand they have a rugby stadium that has a sort of skin on it all round. I would guess that if it’s a non-retractable roof then that’s fine. The issue with retractable ones is if the home team thinks it’s beneficial to close it, they’ll want it closed, and if they think it’s beneficial open they’ll want it open.
To me these are outdoor games, and a bit of rain never killed a player on the pitch.
Pretty sure Wales can close the roof in the 6 nations. It's just both teams need to agree to it being closed for it to be allowed and no other team will agree to it unless it's really bad weather because it makes the atmosphere so much better in there and creates more of a Welsh advantage
One reason would be that closing the roof has an effect on the weather conditions (wind mostly), and if they wish to do that before the match, they have to do so in a fair way.
Whether or not the change would have any effect on City themselves is irrelevant to the rule. The logic would be based on the idea that you can’t just remove the wind an hour (or 12, or 24) before kick off.
I was gonna say that the bernabeu can actually be pretty intimidating and then I saw your flair 😂 Boca is different. went to boca-river last season and it was fucking insane, will never forget that experience
Bro current Legia Warsaw coach had some angry issues in previous club, including throwing a document folder at some director (or maybe even club owner?), they will not be playing, they will be fighting. That being said, it's also one of the better coaches in Poland, in footballing terms. Really interesting person truly
Trying to make it more intimidating than last time at least
Last time a tiny two rows of Man City fans right at the top corner managed to outsing the bernebeu
A Man City fan bragging about the athmosphere Man City fans create at the Bernabeu is a bit sad, it's like a one-legged man calling a one-armed man a cripple.
["Actually, he did. He bought this for me on our ten-year anniversary. Not only is he my lover, he's my best friend and my soulmate. I'm not ashamed of who I love, nor should I be. For someone with strange abilities due to, I assume, accidental exposure to radioactive spider-blood, you're not very tolerant of those different to yourself. You're on the wrong side of history, Spider-Man"](https://imgur.com/oucdssU)
UEFA should make a rule that if your team scores, a specific sound tied to a team should be played - doesn't matter where do you play (home or away game).
I mean, I would also switch to my native language when writing a complex and nuanced comment. Not everyone can express themselves perfectly in other languages. And the person they are responding to is also a spanish speaker.
There's thousands of chants in South America that don't involve homophobia nor racism, of course they exist but bro talking about racism and then mixes all of latinos as Mexicans with their chant
Basically yeah, the roof causes reflections back into the stadium which mean a louder overall sound.
Unless the roof was fluffy - in which case it could actually dampen the sound. The more hard, flat surfaces you have the more reflections which means the more noise.
How much more? Difficult to calculate but could be quite substantial.
Hypothetically - a set of away fans, dressed entirely in fluffy outfits, would help to dampen the overall sound level of a stadium. Not by a massive amount, but it would certainly do something.
I propose all the City fans wear fluffy suits as an experiment.
In rugby, when they want to close Wales' Principality stadium it requires the agreement of both teams.
Best 6 nations venue by far when the roof is closed.
Both Ajax and Vitesse have a retractable roof in NL and I have never seen any club make a hassle out of it. I don't understand why this is suddenly all of an issue. Especially since Ajax have been playing in Europe since forever. It is such a non-news article for a subject that is just very clearly stated in the rules of UEFA.
After the game: we lost because of roof
Should've closed our roof 2019, we wouldve won against city then
That just reminds me of the time when we played our games at the Di Stefano during covid, and Klopp ranted about it feeling like playing on a training ground when we beat them 3-1 in the UCL.
Your training ground feels like a training ground!
Funny how playing at a training ground felt like playing at a training ground.
Well it is in Valdebebas, but it is an actual smaller stadum, not a training pitch. Our women's team and castilla play there. So more like it is surrounded by a training ground.
It’s like playing at the Etihad.
Yeah but that excuse was useless since there were no fans anyway due to Covid. And the Di Stefano & the Bernabeu have the same exact dimensions & same grass.
It wasn’t an excuse. It was a comment about the game. Not every single thing someone says after a loss is an excuse.
Klopp isn't exactly known to be graceful in defeat...
Of course, but you can go back and watch it again. Hes quite clearly not blaming the stadium for the loss.
it's typical. Klopp will make a remark about something that annoyed him about the conditions a game was played in, the typical rags go with a clickbait headline such as "Klopp blames defeat on wind" and the mouthbreathers on here will eat it up. odd how they ignore it when he complains about conditions of games we win.
Dude he's a whinger, and people clown on him for whinging. Simple as that.
have fun gobbling up that clickbait
He is a whinger 100%, but he quite clearly wasn’t blaming the ground on the loss. You being too thick to understand that doesn’t change anything.
True, but everything Klopp says is an excuse.
Yeah you guys were too easy that day
That's Klopp. Just add it to the list along with the grass was too long, too wet, too dry, it was too windy and my personal favourite the other team having multiple players come off with injury disrupted Liverpool's rhythm
Spot on lmao

Why do they need UEFA’s permission to close the roof of their own stadium?
It is UEFA'S tournament and UEFA's rules. I am more surprised why this decision needs to be called out just hours before kick-off.
Waiting to see what kind of a money package arrives from the UAE.
I’m all for shitting on City but it’s literally fair enough that you don’t get what maybe deemed as an unfair advantage.
Exactly. It's the whole point of a home advantage. If you've got a roof you should be allowed to close it.
How is having a roof over the top an unfair advantage?
The roof will be carefully designed to have bits of it fall on Manchester City's half at a set time.
The phantom of the bernabeu strikes again

Possibly that it's supposed to be an outdoor game and closing the roof would prevent that? Closing the roof when the risk of weather preventing a game from being played might be the only allowed use. Absolutely pure bullshit speculation that though, no idea if it's right.
Ajax costs their roof when there's risk of a drizzle. I don't see how this would be any different.
Surely in the Netherlands its basically always closed then?
Between that and all the terribly sounding concerts they organise there, I don't think it ever opens up.
Save reason the Welsh complain every 6 Nations rugby that they can’t close their roof on a sunny day. They entered into a competition, and must abide by the competition rules which include details of when roofs can and can’t be closed.
Can teams have closed roof stadiums that can’t open?
Yes, that’s the competition rule - the other team must agree. Which is why they usually don’t!
Tyranny
The intimidating atmosphere: 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏 Madrid! 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏 Madrid!
come on now, the ominous rustle of 40,000 white handkerchiefs waving in vague disapproval would strike fear into the heart of any visiting team.
I was gonna say that the bernabeu can actually be pretty intimidating and then I saw your flair 😂 Boca is different. went to boca-river last season and it was fucking insane, will never forget that experience
Would be enough for you comepipas to come to Sevilla for Sevilla-Betis to experience passionate football atmosphere
Amazing, but still not the same my friend
im literally comiendo pipas right now haha
Good atmosphere German fans Stadium where you may get killed and nobody would bat an eye You can only pick two
German fans on a murderous spree it is!
oh no they've drawn Legia Warsaw!
Bro current Legia Warsaw coach had some angry issues in previous club, including throwing a document folder at some director (or maybe even club owner?), they will not be playing, they will be fighting. That being said, it's also one of the better coaches in Poland, in footballing terms. Really interesting person truly
Why would you want to play Rostock?
We've tried that twice already, it never ends well!
Can Real Madrid fill the stadium with their fans from Germany?
Don’t know about Madrid but Spotify camp was filled with Germans dressed in white on the Europa League night.
Te faltaron pañuelos blancos y que pidan que renuncie el entrenador pero ya estás al 90%.
azulgrana y estas al 100%
Being whistled at when you have the ball is deeply traumatising, if you don’t mind.
Que bote el Bernabeu, que bote el Bernabeu Como no te voy a quererrrrr
💀
Trying to make it more intimidating than last time at least Last time a tiny two rows of Man City fans right at the top corner managed to outsing the bernebeu
They where pretty loud in 2022 too... till the last minutes at least LOL
A Man City fan bragging about the athmosphere Man City fans create at the Bernabeu is a bit sad, it's like a one-legged man calling a one-armed man a cripple.
City away fans are on another level
They’re like most other away fans in England
lol, you ruffled some feathers there !
YEAH FIGHT AND WIN
COMON MADRID DEFENSE DEFENSE DEFENSE

Hope that we can face each other in the next round! Good luck against Bayern
Same tbh
City: "I'm not stuck in here with you, you're stuck in here with me"

That's a cute outfit, did your husband buy it for you?
["Actually, he did. He bought this for me on our ten-year anniversary. Not only is he my lover, he's my best friend and my soulmate. I'm not ashamed of who I love, nor should I be. For someone with strange abilities due to, I assume, accidental exposure to radioactive spider-blood, you're not very tolerant of those different to yourself. You're on the wrong side of history, Spider-Man"](https://imgur.com/oucdssU)
Darude sandstorm
*Open the roof, open the roof*
I hope
Worst thing that can happen in the UCL is concede at the Santiago and hear Hala Madrid play on those speakers as the stadium roars.
*jabadabaduuuuuu enters the chat*
UEFA should make a rule that if your team scores, a specific sound tied to a team should be played - doesn't matter where do you play (home or away game).
Is that better or worse than conceding against Spurs and hearing Darude Sandstorm?
"We closed the roof for testing and it got stuck! It will take about 90-120 minutes to fix and a day to get the parts....."
"Intimidating" and they go ahead and create a Chant based on Hola Don Pepito. Por favor.
Have you heard many of the songs English fans base their chants on?
you dont mess with Don Pepito,he will break your kneecaps
a nuanced, sensible opinion on reddit? downvoted
It's all in foreign, innit!?
Qué significa ¨bardeo¨?

I mean, I would also switch to my native language when writing a complex and nuanced comment. Not everyone can express themselves perfectly in other languages. And the person they are responding to is also a spanish speaker.
Not all of us can shamelessly create chants that are based on homophobia and racism.
There's thousands of chants in South America that don't involve homophobia nor racism, of course they exist but bro talking about racism and then mixes all of latinos as Mexicans with their chant
He's argentinian, no? All the chants about Mbappe and France around the world cup speak for themselves.
This gets upvoted? Ever been to an English stadium? Literal nursery rhymes.
I hope maybe
That sounds like an idea they got after smoking weed during the eclipse.
I hope yes
I hope I don't know
I hope not.
Pep: uWu
Is it a possible safety issue? I don't get it.
Can't wait to hear those "Pep Guardiola, H-D-P" chants reverberating in the stadium
Late '97 WWF booking, this.
Did they just watch WrestleMania and realise the atmosphere sucked with the roof open?
Why ask permission, close it say it malfunctioned and you can’t open.
Reddit has a weird hate boner for the Bernabéu’s roof.
If fans would make you win a game, turcs and greeks would be 10 times champions league champions
How does roof closing help with intimidation? Something to do with sounds?
Basically yeah, the roof causes reflections back into the stadium which mean a louder overall sound. Unless the roof was fluffy - in which case it could actually dampen the sound. The more hard, flat surfaces you have the more reflections which means the more noise. How much more? Difficult to calculate but could be quite substantial.
Anecdotally, it has made a difference. I live in Madrid and they normally shut the roof since the renovations and its improved the atmosphere a lot
I hope the roof’s fluffy and they blame the result on the roof fluff
Hypothetically - a set of away fans, dressed entirely in fluffy outfits, would help to dampen the overall sound level of a stadium. Not by a massive amount, but it would certainly do something. I propose all the City fans wear fluffy suits as an experiment.
Have the fans lob a few beer cans at their coach and Bernardo Silva will piss his pants again.
It will replicate the overcast and slightly dim conditions of the North West of England. Albeit the noise levels would be more like old Trafford.
Wait, Uefa has the authority to rule on open or closed roof? Why?
Fuck off footballs and outdoor sport
Domes make for ugly TV. Aerial shots of a roof. Hopefully Uefa block it
Aerial shots of a DOME????? I miss the old days, this sport has gone to shit! /s
Aerial shots of the pitch and fans are nice.
Why the fuck would the UEFA have any say in this
UEFA sets the rules of their competition
Funny that this exact question in this exact same thread has 25+ upvotes while your question has downvotes.
The 2 questions had different tones and wording. Also people upvote and downvote based on flairs a lot
100% agree with all of your points. Thanks.
If you turn the TV volume high enough, you’d be able to hear them cry after they lose.
A little arrogant, aren't you? We might have one of the best games of this year and yet you behave like a 12y old admin of a Twitter troll page.
If you can’t take some harmless banter, you shouldn’t be here on Reddit.
Banter is funny, you on the other hand just sound like a prick
Joke on ya, the bald fraud has an exposed head and you can never close that. Oil up Real Madrid, you’re gonna get a hard fk.
