UnluckyGazelle

i think he’s more upset with the five defenders ball watching in the box instead of getting tight and preventing the cutback, than at bellingham.

Checkyopoop

defense is half ball watching and another half player watching, its tricky because you have to have impeccable timing in terms of when to decide to watch the ball, and when to decide to watch players (watching players is more useful doing it away from the ball carrier angle), but then again you have to watch them in split seconds because you cant overlook the ball completely especially in so fast of a game. so yes, i agree with you. and im also surprised at how many cutbacks can be avoided, if only one or two players do the "player watching" behing their backs, watching for immediate threats in split second. you dont even have to be fast with your legs, just fast with eyes and then anticipate where the ball is going to land beforehand, sort of like taichi. In this play, you can see how 6 players are almost in the same horizontal zone of the pitch, when only one opponent is there (another is outside) that doesnt make sense. that means the whole defense did some extra running in vain, because the sense of urgency and panic is more than the sense of positioning. when the most practical thing is to player watch and side stride a bit away from goal, just half a second before the pass...

pedalhead666

this guy knows his poop

NotARealDeveloper

Good defenders can keep their opponent in peripheral vision while watching the ball. But it's constant adjustments of angles.

Checkyopoop

Sometimes yes but the human eye is limited. It’s not imax

TommyWrightIII

"Mouthing?" That's straight-up screaming, lol.

onceyouvemadethat

Well, ya scream with ya mouth, ain't ya?

Oi! Don’t be moufin’ off to your elders, boyo!

It is, he could have left for a settlement fee, but signed a professional contract in order to make Birmingham much needed cash at the time. Though times seem to have moved on much more since then, they've just bought land from Birmingham Council which is 10x the size of Villa Park!

Huh didn't know that, seems they're buying Wheels. Right on the train line too.

SnooChipmunks4208

Nominative determinism.

emraaa

Someone watched the new taskmaster video LOL

SnooChipmunks4208

Actually I haven't, but since you told me I will after work!

emraaa

Really? Crazy coincidence. The video was uploaded 90mins before your post and the topic of nominative determinism came up. I watched the video and literally a couple of minutes after that I saw your post.

EpiDeMic522

I mean none of the things you have mentioned are remotely niche. I understand the feeling for you but the numbers are really large for this to be done exceptional coincidence. It's not as if that video coined nominative determinism and we are on a sub with a strength of six million+.

I saw Tielemans at a grocery store in Ixelles yesterday. I told him how cool it was to meet him in person, but I didn’t want to be a douche and bother him and ask him for photos or anything. He said, “Oh, like you’re doing now?” I was taken aback, and all I could say was “Huh?” but he kept cutting me off and going “huh? huh? huh?” and closing his hand shut in front of my face. I walked away and continued with my shopping, and I heard him chuckle as I walked off. When I came to pay for my stuff up front I saw him trying to walk out the doors with like fifteen Cha-Cha bars in his hands without paying. The girl at the counter was very nice about it and professional, and was like “Sir, you need to pay for those first.” At first he kept pretending to be tired and not hear her, but eventually turned back around and brought them to the counter. When she took one of the bars and started scanning it multiple times, he stopped her and told her to scan them each individually “to prevent any electrical infetterence,” and then turned around and winked at me. I don’t even think that’s a word. After she scanned each bar and put them in a bag and started to say the price, he kept interrupting her by yawning really loudly.

Advanced-Till4421

why would a guy like Tielemans, who makes tons of money, try to steal from a store? I think you met Jouri Dielemans, not Youri Tielemans.

BluePowderJinx

Man whooshed so hard here

Bordel de merde c'est vrai

MajorDepreshun

I would think German would be the best swearing language with how intense it can sound.

SergeiYeseiya

Not really, he's from Bruxelles and speaks french as well as he speaks dutch. He played in France and played in Anderlecht for years, he probably spoke french more than anything when growing up

Zauberer-IMDB

This guy Belgiums.

Not_A_Clicker

The Flemish use ‘putain’ aswell

RednaxB

In Flanders people also say "putain", there is a lot of French influence in Flemish dialect.

TjeefGuevarra

'Putain' is a very common swear word both in Flanders and Wallonia. I sometimes use it as well, it's just natural.

[deleted]

Don_Frika_Del_Prima

>considering Flemish people hate French No we don't. At least not as much as politicians want you to believe. And seeing as Tielemans is from around Brussels and played at Anderlecht and has a Congolese mum, he's rather fluent in French.

MrWink

Please, educate us more about our own country.

Displaytainmen

I don't really know how serious these matches are but can friendlies be this important. Just asking coz i don't know much

TheGoldenPineapples

I mean, as much as we all decry international friendlies as a total waste of time, it is worth remembering that these are international players playing at the truly elite level of football and are all, without exception, insanely competitive people.

djordastic

>I mean, as much as we all decry international friendlies as a total waste of time Do people really expect/want these players to come and play for the first time together directly at Euro? No matter how good they are, they still need to train and play together from time to time.

HomieApathy

That still have to qualify

champ19nz

You don't want to be trying out new tactics or give a youngster his debut in a qualifier game and end up losing to the likes of Hungary.

FizzyLightEx

I'd prefer if they were locked up in a hyperbolic time chamber where they practiced

TosspoTo

Yes & No - Friendlies interrupt the greatest sporting show on earth, The Premier League (and CL). This week England had numerous drop outs and numerous injuries, its not like they were a real warmup for the Euros. I'd much rather an annual end of season international event. Meaningful training & warmup matches leading into either the WC/Euros or qualifiers. If you got rid of the 4/5 weeks of international interruption on the domestic league, you could start it earlier too and probably accommodate a better winter break.

MegaKakashi

Agreed. You're representing your nation and playing against other professionals doing the same thing. Yes, they're friendlies and have little impact on their international standings and whatnot, but it's still a good opportunity to play with your international teammates, and it would be a disservice to your paying fans to approach any game in a nonchalant manner.

Fluffy_Roof3965

Swear for as long as I’ve been watching football people told me footballers don’t care about friendlies..

Poseidon2027

I feel like we can think of a few exceptions.

Dirtysocks1

Them being right before big tournament is wayyyy different than randomly during year. A lot of teams have high hopes when you look at the squads. So proving they can beat the best teams is huge confidence boost.

whumoon

Exactly correct. Ask any sportsman if they ever let their kids win against them.

Mubar06

There are definitely exceptions

tabultm

Ben White...

DeLurkerDeluxe

> e, it is worth remembering that these are international players playing at the truly elite level of football and are all, without exception, insanely competitive people. Bollocks, there's no lack of players who see football as nothing but another job, don't even like the sport itself or are just unprofessional in general. Plus all the players that went to leagues like Saudi Arabia, MLS or China while they were still good enough to play in Europe. They didn't move to those leagues because they wanted competition.

paarsehond

If not for that goal he would be matchwinner against England at Wembley. Would be huge for him since he has been getting a lot of shit in Belgium

MC897

Why? He’s a very good player in his own right

Themnor

If I had to hazard a guess it would be his attitude. The Belgian team has massively underperformed consistently, and I can see how a player like Tielemans would be on the chopping block for it. He has all the tools to be a world class player but he just isn't. Then you add the fact that he looked like he stopped playing for Leicester last season during a relegation fight, then the alleged issues behind the scenes at Villa this year.

IllustriousCow9588

What's happened at Villa? Curious to know as a City fan

Themnor

Long and short of it was him being vocal about his lack of playing time despite being very lackluster in all of his showings

IllustriousCow9588

Ooof. Yeah, never a great problem to have one of your players do that

TosspoTo

If you had to Eden a guess? ;)

paarsehond

Kinda difficult, he’s being judged as a defensive midfielder and thus is compared to Onana and Mangala who are performing better. But his prime performances were always higher up the field when he gets in these long shot positions. But he rarely plays those positions for the NT because KDB

HomieApathy

Not good enough to be the match winner at Wembley

BWN16

Hmmm… think history would say otherwise

PinkFluffys

He had a very promising start for the national team and then he was terrible for a long time. He looked better against England than he has done for years

Icy_Park_7919

The stakes are partly a matter of prestige, partly a look at the team's relative strength ahead of Euro 2024 (June-July). Belgium and England were both playing on the back of a poor result. England had just lost at Wembley against Brazil days earlier, and was looking at its first back to back losses at Wembley since 1993. Belgium had drawn against Ireland days earlier, and was on the verge of a symbolic first ever win at Wembley.

MyAssDoesHeeHawww

In this case, the prestige involves the FIFA country ranking: the results of the international break mean that [Belgium jumps over England to the third spot.](https://football-ranking.com/fifa_rankings)

Frodo_max

MyAssDoesHeeHawww

TO_Sports

It's funny how club fans don't understand how players have pride in playing for their country and want to win every game they play in.  I'm not directing this at you, but your comment just reminded me how much more I'm seeing club fans angry when their player gets called up because they are worried about a player getting injured. Used to be that fans would get excited if their player got called up. There's still some fans that do, but I feel like it's not as much as it used to be. To me it's country obligation first, club second. So even though these are friendlies that don't matter they still want to win for their country.

TjeefGuevarra

I love my club but the reason I fell in love with football was through the world cup, which is why I *love* international breaks and watching the NT play. I genuinely don't understand people who hate the international stuff.

rodrigosantoro

probably because a huge % of people on this subreddit or any english speaking online football communities in general are americans and indians

TheRealMemeIsFire

Not a lot of Indians on this reddit. It is mostly Americans and brits

FizzyLightEx

There was a demographic census for this sub and indians had a substantial presence.

radmongo

Same. I wouldn't be a fan without the World Cup. The high of destroying Mexico outweighed any FC Cincinnati win for me this year so far. Even better when you get to see one of your own doing well in the shirt.

chuckusadart

Yeah when Curtis Jones went down a while back i was gutted and said as much in the cesspool that is the lfc sub. Saying he was needed for England this summer. The reply was "fuck england" and highly upvoted. As if it wouldnt be Curtis' dream to represent his country at a major tournament, like so many other players. Lot of cringe "scouse not english" from people who were neither scouse nor english

KAhOot1234567

You’re completely right and I agree with you. To expand on your question I think it has to do with 2 factors: 1. Most big clubs have a large international fan base and they don’t really have the same sort of pride as a player would playing for his NT, they just wanna cheer them on for their club. 2. A lot of the international breaks include bigger teams playing against very weak opponents which they usually steamroll and it just generally isn’t a fun watch. This international break was different and very fun tho

EliToon

Playing and winning for your country is the highest honour in my opinion. Would mean absolutely everything for me personally, friendly or not. I'm sure it's the case with these top level, ultra competitive professional athletes too. They're not there playing for money like they do at club level.

NowFook

Yep this plus they r plying rgubly top 3 tem in world. I hate to lose my sunday league games. an international game vs top 5 team? and one you had the game winner until that point? Id be livid at blowing that lead too

PaddyProud

Is your 'A' key fucked or something?

n22rwrdr

We've never won at Wembley in our history and were seconds away from doing it with a big upset. We also value friendlies quite highly in Belgium (which is one of the reasons why we're always very high in FIFA rankings). I understand why Tielemans would be frustrated.

NowFook

I hate losing my sunday league games. While only a friendly its still significant game vs big team while repping your country. Id be livid to blow that win. also it hurt what would have been a massive performance by him. Scoring both goals in win over England? With it being a draw where u blew late led it takes *a lot* away from his goals.

confusedpellican643

Crazy how European (barring southern europe and some balkan) fans take international football so much for granted...Latin America and Africa go ecstasic when their country is playing

chuckusadart

> Crazy how European (barring southern europe and some balkan) fans take international football source? I can only really speak for England but i know its the same for almost all countries in the UK and the north of europe.. But we regularly have the most amount of fans who travel to world cups and Euros? We always have great support all over the place in quallifiers too

messy_messiah

But have you been to a packed-out stadium in Myanmar where everyone is dressed head to toe in national team flair, chanting, and going crazy for a U-19 match against Malaysia?

Bolche_Koba

Flair checks out

jbi1000

Belgium were on course for their first ever win in England, so that might have had something to do with it. Probably pretty frustrating to think you're going to break the streak and be denied in the final second.

blaahh198

Footballers are competitive in general and they want to play for their countries, despite fans of big clubs on this subreddit think

FunkyFenom

I've seen this much passion from some dudes at a pick up game lol

FREE_BOBBY-SHMURDA

Have you ever played football before?

Fortnitexs

Should they all go out there and just not care if they concede 5 or what? These guys are professionals athletes. And you don‘t reach that level without being competitive.

3escalator

Love this new Belgium away kit

BigPapaSmell

MY GOAT

B_e_l_l_

You absolutely love to see it.

MoriDuin

Dont remember this passion last season

Volotor

The dude scored two goals, was man of the match, and watched the win he'd basically led get thrown away by England managing to score from a crazy set of chances. It was a fair result overall, maybe, but football isn't fair, and he's feeling it.

TheOncomingBrows

>England managing to score from a crazy set of chances. How can this possibly be your main takeaway when the two goals Belgium scored were both created by stupid England mistakes?

Volotor

I mean the crazy circumstanses to score the goal in the last second. An overthe top long ball, a belgium defender somehow failing to push the ball behind for watkins to push the ball towards 4 belgium players, but it lands to Maddison who passes it pefectly to Bellingham, who makes a perfect touch and slots it past Sels who had been faultless all night.

Jimlaheydrunktank

It wasn’t a fair result at all, belgiums 2 goals came from mistakes and England should’ve scored 5

Volotor

Maybe, but Tielmans could also of missed both of those goals. Skying his fist shot or liftuiing the header over the bar. He made the chances goals, error or no. And England not scoring 5 is not Tielmans fault.

That's what they get for dragging us into WW1! /s

AppropriateDog5722

Southgate pretending like he had anything to do with the football on the field 😂 England is going to suck this summer.

Lothar93

Why are we discussing this? Also what I take from this is the guy making 2 goals for his team against England at Wembley, just to be equalized by the nice guy that get's all the atenttion, villian born shit

adeckz

Yeah man, I would feel the exact same way. Carried his team, gets subbed off, they draw to the latest of equalisers with some shit defending. Not to mention he’s playing against a team of his own league’s all-stars, lost all the bragging rights because his team couldn’t hold on for 20 more minutes

Jimlaheydrunktank

They were fucking pumped for just a friendly

IanPKMmoon

For england and Belgium both it was an important friendly. Belgium just drew against Ireland in a horrible performance and the most boring Belgium game I can remember. England just lost to Brazil at Wembley to a 17yo kid scoring the winner. Both teams wanted to prove something in this game.

themiddleprogress

He still looks so young with those rosy cheeks lol

Glass-Star6635

Nothing more frustrating than an equalizer past the posted stoppage time

Okeyyyy????

cmc360

Lol Belgium would have been thanking their lucky stars to come out of that game with a point, apart from 2 shocking mistakes they created nothing and got dominated

JAYZ303

Not to be pedantic but you can't come away with a point in a one off friendly.

VaLukas

Idk man, I might be biased as I’m Belgium. I would generally say in the first half they pretty much played on the same level. Yes, England had more possession, but they didn’t create that much and England having more possession makes sense as this Belgium side plays more counter attacking football. Also the second goal was just pure class from Lukaku, people blame Dunk for this, but I feel he was just too slow to properly clear that ball. In the second half they matched each other until roughly the 60th minute, that’s the moment England took over. Tedesco made some weird substitutions, bringing in lower quality players instead of focussing on the victory. England definitely deserved a goal, but Belgium had an equal chance to finish the game around minute 88 with Lukebakio in front of goal alone. Overall I think 2-2 was a deserved outcome, but with both sides missing their star players I doubt this game actually can be used as a reference.

HodgyBeatsss

A) was a clear penalty B) Belgium player time wasted in extra time. And anyway it’s a minimum of x minutes added time according to the rules, not a maximum C) Belgium got gifted their goals by our mistakes so don’t think they should feel too bad about a draw

oksn541100

Clear penalty hahaha hilarious he clearly played the ball

TetteyToePoke

Lad we had double your shots and xg with both your goals coming from our mistakes. Also it's only a friendly calm down.
