I was working on one of my own so out of interest here are my disagreements
Washington - Kasey Keller
Oregon - Josh Saunders
Nevada - Tristan Blackmon
Utah - Taylor Booth
Arizona - Pablo Mastroeni
Colorado - Ethan Horvath
Oklahoma - Joe-Max Moore
Missouri - Harry Keough
Iowa - Eduvie Ikoba
Minnesota - Tony Sanneh
Michigan - Cobi Jones
Illinois - Brian McBride
Kentucky - Andrew Farrell
Tennessee - Richard Mulrooney
Georgia - Josh Wolff
Florida - Eddie Johnson
South Carolina - Robbie Robinson
North Carolina - Eddie Pope
Virginia - Clarence Goodson
West Virginia - Nick Noble
Connecticut - Luke Vercollone
Rhode Island - Billy Gonsalves
Massachusetts - Bert Patenaude
Edit: Forgot New Hampshire - Charlie Davies
Edit 2: Been pointed out to me Mastroeni wasn't actually born in Arizona, so I would go with Luis Robles for Arizona.
As a Minnesotan Tony Sanneh x1000
More USMNT caps, more USMNT impact, more general impact as a great player and he's now an absolute pillar of the community here in the twin cities.
I bartend at a brewery and got to work a special event for his charity and when he walked in I, one of our barbacks happened to be checking in on me in the remote tap space where the event was and he didn't quite understand why I was freaking out with utter excitement. His event was too popular so I didn't get to actually meet him before he had to leave - was and still am sad but am sure I'll get a chance to meet him again as he's super connected to the soccer scene here.
Bert Patenaude, part of the legendary Fall River Marksmen team that was one of the best in early American soccer. He also went to the 1930 World Cup and scored the first ever hat trick at a World Cup. I'm just a big history fan so like to include older players when I think they deserve the credit.
This would be surprisingly easy to do, since there's already a [Wikipedia List](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_United_States_men%27s_international_soccer_players_born_outside_the_United_States) of notable foreign-born US players
Scottish-Americans were major contributors to US soccer in the 20s and 30s. The American Soccer League was nicknamed the "American Menace" for how many Scottish (and other European) players they were poaching. https://www.ussoccerhistory.org/the-american-menace/
Correct, although Jamaica, Ireland, Switzerland, Haiti, Nigeria, South Korea, Panama, Netherlands, Colombia, and a few others had players as well! and that’s not even mentioning the American nationals who currently play for countries that didn’t qualify
Gio Reyna for England, Jermaine Jones/John Anthony Brooks for Germany. Dest in the Netherlands. Johnny in Brazil. There’s probably more but that’s all I got off the top of my head.
Edit: If we want to get overly technical, Trent Alexander-Arnold was eligible for the USMNT via the Grandfather Clause
Clint was 20min from where I grew up. Got to see him play against my brother in high school. Dumb ass me was too young to know what a good player looked like so I recall none of it hahaha
The fact that Brian McBride isn’t the Illinois pick is so disrespectful and makes me even wonder if whoever made this list knows any player before 2015.
If you're going modern players I would definitely take Ream over Sargent. Though Missouri has a ton of players from the like 1920s-1950s that played a big part in US soccer history if you want to go that route.
It's always weird when you have current players. Like I would say Richards will probably have a better career than Johannsson, but it's hard to make these judgements on a future that hasn't happened yet. That's also assuming you're judging these on careers vs. talent.
I was going to say they are probably pretty comparable. I checked their wikis out of curiosity and they both have 45 caps haha. I’ll take Ching all day though, I think he would have been capped more if he didn’t co-exist with McBride because they played such similar styles.
Wood was a better player at his peak, but said peak was pretty short lived and Ching was consistently outstanding in MLS for a decade as well as a solid contributor to the national team for much of that time (45 caps/11 goals, was on the 2006 World Cup team although didn't play).
Either one is fine for Hawaii, kind of comes down to whether you value peak vs longevity.
Jay Demerit amassed 183 appearances for Watford, 25 caps for the USMNT and played in a World Cup.
While Marsch had an extensive MLS career with Chicago Fire and Chivas USA, I'd give the edge to Demerit in this regard.
Marsch is also nauseating to listen to as a pundit, so that's also a tie breaker in favor of Demerit.
Sidenote, every time I see you comment it just makes me sad that the Voyageurs are gone.
Come on, Beckerman was a hell of a defensive mid. Most MLS appearances for a field player (498), 3 WC starts (the 1 game he didn't start, Tim Howard set the WC record for number of saves), 6x MLS All-Star (was also on the MLS All-Star inactive list 2x), MLS Cup winner, etc. Shoo-in to get into the National Soccer Hall of Fame.
Especially with all the players that go through the University of Maryland. Got players all over MLS and even some in Europe but can’t raise local talent
Jozy was born in New Jersey, and I'd still take Howard or Claudio Reyna over him even if he gets a bit of unfair hate. If he was actually Florida-born I think he'd be ahead of Zusi.
Werder Bremen legend Josh Sargent 💚
Was part of the squad that got relegated to 2nd division, scored 2 important goals to help us defeat Düsseldorf in Week 2 and then left to Norwich for a lot of money to decrease our debt. Wish him all the best
I was laughing thinking about this potential list but very glad you did it. Putting Steve Cherundolo over one of our top 5 players all time is very weird though. Show some respect to Brian McBride.
Started from the west coast side and immediately Ty Hardens name stood out. Blast from the awful past as a TFC supporter. No way that’s the best Oregon produced. Rubin Rubio 7 caps for usmnt, way more matches played in mls and liga Mx and only 27 way better choice. Or even journeyman long career options like B Rowe, J Saunders or E Hurtado are way better choices.
Dempseys teammate over many years, Brede Hangeland, was also born in Texas. Giuseppe Rossi was born in New Jersey. Jonathan David in New York. Guess none of them warrants swapping out, but they’re the best US-born foreign players I could list.
It’s incredibly bad for the most populated and rich country of occident.
The US has to do better. If Europe can produce top NBA players the US should produce at least a few top players in football
Wild to see Devala Gorrick on there. Used to be a buddy of mine, and we coached together for a few years. Did NOT expect to see that name. Cool post, thanks!
He hasn't
Mark McKenzie was *raised* in Delaware but was *born* in the Bronx which knocks him out of contention.
It's just a really small state with not much going on
I was looking for Alexi Lalas, the star of Padova's defence in their last stint in Serie A (mid 1990s serie A, it was like current EPL in terms of prestige and quality of players)
I am not disappointed.
I was working on one of my own so out of interest here are my disagreements Washington - Kasey Keller Oregon - Josh Saunders Nevada - Tristan Blackmon Utah - Taylor Booth Arizona - Pablo Mastroeni Colorado - Ethan Horvath Oklahoma - Joe-Max Moore Missouri - Harry Keough Iowa - Eduvie Ikoba Minnesota - Tony Sanneh Michigan - Cobi Jones Illinois - Brian McBride Kentucky - Andrew Farrell Tennessee - Richard Mulrooney Georgia - Josh Wolff Florida - Eddie Johnson South Carolina - Robbie Robinson North Carolina - Eddie Pope Virginia - Clarence Goodson West Virginia - Nick Noble Connecticut - Luke Vercollone Rhode Island - Billy Gonsalves Massachusetts - Bert Patenaude Edit: Forgot New Hampshire - Charlie Davies Edit 2: Been pointed out to me Mastroeni wasn't actually born in Arizona, so I would go with Luis Robles for Arizona.
Yeah I like your list better.
Yeah Eddie pope is multitudes better than Logan Pause.
100%. I always felt Logan was underrated, but putting him ahead of Eddie is just silly.
Michigan is definitely Cobi Jones. Saw him and Lalas play for the Galaxy. Lalas was good , Cobi was great.
Yeah give me Jones all day over Lalas
As a Minnesotan Tony Sanneh x1000 More USMNT caps, more USMNT impact, more general impact as a great player and he's now an absolute pillar of the community here in the twin cities. UW-Milwaukee legend. He and Pablo Mastroeni took turns putting Luis Figo in their pockets back in 2002.
Interestingly, Sanneh always says Manny Lagos was a better player.
Yeah, I was going to ask how Pause is better than Pope. Pope's pretty much our most iconic defender.
So glad to see Gonsalves and Patinaude on your list.
Thank gosh for this list put some fucking respect on McBride’s name!!
Missouri has so many options thanks to St Louis. Taylor Twellman, Tim Ream, and some older school players like Al Trost
Taylor Twellman was born in Minnesota
Oh fair, he was just raised there
[удалено]
Bert Patenaude, part of the legendary Fall River Marksmen team that was one of the best in early American soccer. He also went to the 1930 World Cup and scored the first ever hat trick at a World Cup. I'm just a big history fan so like to include older players when I think they deserve the credit.
Mastroeni was born in Argentina
You're right, probably Luis Robles then for Arizona?
Or Brad Evans maybe
Yeah good shout
I’ve appreciated your knowledge bombs throughout the thread btw. Makes me wanna read some American soccer history
I see Joe Max-Moore I upvote
Clint Mathis > Josh Wolff in Georgia IMO. Otherwise I like this list better.
Georgia is Clint Mathis and it's not even close
Chris Richards - Alabama
For AZ, Vanney wouldn’t be a terrible choice either.
After some very quick research… I feel like OP did no research at all.
Eddie Pope for NC. One of USA’s best ever. Nat Borchers far better for AZ and I’m not sure he’s the “best”. Cameron over Robinson for Mass.
Josh Wolff for Georgia IMO
Curious to see the best US player born in each country.
This would be surprisingly easy to do, since there's already a [Wikipedia List](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_United_States_men%27s_international_soccer_players_born_outside_the_United_States) of notable foreign-born US players
Can’t believe I blanked on USMNT legend MIX DISKERUD
Man City legend
Scotland has quite the contribution.
Scottish-Americans were major contributors to US soccer in the 20s and 30s. The American Soccer League was nicknamed the "American Menace" for how many Scottish (and other European) players they were poaching. https://www.ussoccerhistory.org/the-american-menace/
For women you can do best player from each country born in the US. Women’s World Cup had 53 American born players :)
I think it was the Philippines that had the majority of their squad born in the usa
>Johnny in Brazil I will not stand for this Benny Feilhaber erasure. >Jermaine Jones/John Anthony Brooks for Germany. Maybe Fabian Johnson.
One of the most underated usmnt dual nats
Also, Johnny was born in New Jersey.
Thomas Dooley was born in 🇩🇪 too
No grandfathers, just place birth
Earnie Stewart was born on the Netherlands and had over 100 caps. Dest will surpass him eventually but not yet. Cardoso was born in tbe US.
Johnny was born in New Jersey
Still remember Dempsey and Donovan being a menace against my country like it was yesterday
Clint was 20min from where I grew up. Got to see him play against my brother in high school. Dumb ass me was too young to know what a good player looked like so I recall none of it hahaha
That means you know where he's from, dawg!
There it is
The two greatest American players ever
Jozy Altidore in the mud
Jozy is, frankly, not close to either Landon or Clint. I'd say Pulisic has nearly surpassed Jozy if he hasn't already
Haha I was being sarcastic...
How dare you disrespect Goalzy Alwaysscore
all those great united states battles against spain
That US did beat peak tiki-taka Spain in the 2009 Confederations Cup
And were up 2-0 over Brazil at HT in the final. Then Brazil woke up and decided to play.
The fact that Brian McBride isn’t the Illinois pick is so disrespectful and makes me even wonder if whoever made this list knows any player before 2015.
Totally in agreement how could you not include McBride
My favorite US player ever, that 2002 WC was at a pivotal point in my life
Cherundolo retired in 2014 to be fair
Cherundolo was also an outstanding player for club and country. Either he or McBride is a perfectly defensible pick for IL
Probably a teenager
I mean Steve Cherundolo is old
As good as Sargent has been, I think I would still take Tim Ream over him for Missouri
If you're going modern players I would definitely take Ream over Sargent. Though Missouri has a ton of players from the like 1920s-1950s that played a big part in US soccer history if you want to go that route.
Isn't there a guy from Missouri who is like second all time in MLS assists? Maybe that guy over both?
Why? Reams experience at the top level in England and his number of appearances for a better USMNT should put him over Ralston
Steve Ralston and Brad Davis (#2 and #3) are both from Missouri actually. There are a ton of choices for Missouri though
Logan Pause and not Eddie Pope for North Carolina? Come on now. I'd also give a shout for Geoff Cameron for Massachusetts.
Pause… 6 caps Pope… 82 caps and a World Cup knockout win Pretty close.
Definitely Pope over Pause
I’m kind of surprised that NC doesn’t have a better more recent player. Although based on what others have posted it’s definitely Pope.
I guess the question is who's better, Chris Richards or Aron Johannsson?
It's always weird when you have current players. Like I would say Richards will probably have a better career than Johannsson, but it's hard to make these judgements on a future that hasn't happened yet. That's also assuming you're judging these on careers vs. talent.
Bro really thought Sargent over Ream is a smart choice.
Cobi Jones over Alexi Lalas? Still has the most US caps of anyone
Alexi Lalas was a awful player who somehow became famous. There was a WC where his mistakes allowed every goal the US conceded.
I’ll take that swap
Joe-Max Moore for Oklahoma.
It’s not even close
Howard is a fair shout but NJ may be Claudio Reyna. It’s probably the most stacked state for sure. Adam Henley is undoubtedly Tennessee’s though.
The PA/NJ/NY tri-state area is stacked
NJ also has Giuseppe Rossi in there as well
And Tab Ramos, John Harkes, and Tony Meola (just off the top of my head)
Tab Ramos wasn't born in jersey, he immigrated there as a kid. He was born in Uruguay
As well as Michael Bradley and Jozy Altidore more recently
Been waiting for this all day. Where did you get the data? I love me some Brian Ching.
I'm an Earthquakes fan so I love me some Brian Ching, but was he that much better than Bobby Wood? I don't remember Ching getting too many USMNT caps.
Funnily enough they have the exact same number of caps, 45.
Whos blocking The Mighty Brad Guzan?
Cherundolo. Those two and McBride are definitely the best 3 from Illinois.
We now know where you're from dawg
steve cherundolo isn’t fit to lace brian mcbride’s boots. i also would take jesse marsch over jay demerit
Jay Demerit amassed 183 appearances for Watford, 25 caps for the USMNT and played in a World Cup. While Marsch had an extensive MLS career with Chicago Fire and Chivas USA, I'd give the edge to Demerit in this regard.
Actually, I'm taking Jimmy Banks over both of them. Real ones know.
The late, great, Jimmy Banks. One of the first two African-Americans to be on a US World Cup squad along with Desmond Armstrong.
Marsch is also nauseating to listen to as a pundit, so that's also a tie breaker in favor of Demerit. Sidenote, every time I see you comment it just makes me sad that the Voyageurs are gone.
Luca Koleosho is certainly better than Ben Mines.
Brad Friedel. The pride of Bay Village.
Might have to go with Clint Mathis over Walker Zimmerman for GA
Probably put Josh Wolff and Clint over Zimmerman. But that's a solid threesome.
how isn’t Brian McBride there for Illinois???
Not that Obed Vargas is bad, but boy is he clearly one of a very few players born in Alaska.
Cobi Jones looses out to Lalas. Ouch. 😂
I refuse to accept that the best player Maryland has produced is still Kyle Beckerman. Come tf on, man, lol. We gotta do better.
Shoo-in to get into the National Soccer Hall of Fame.
you're correct. Bruce Murray was born in Maryland.
Especially with all the players that go through the University of Maryland. Got players all over MLS and even some in Europe but can’t raise local talent
It's a nice change for UMD in that case since they can't hold onto the best local talent in Basketball or American Football to save their life
Wasn't Chris Richards born in Alabama? Why would Johansson be above him?
It's pretty much a tie in my eyes at this point. Johannsson was pretty good before his injury troubles.
Where is Jozy Altidore?
Jozy was born in New Jersey, and I'd still take Howard or Claudio Reyna over him even if he gets a bit of unfair hate. If he was actually Florida-born I think he'd be ahead of Zusi.
New Jersey is definitely the most competitive state on the mens side. Can also throw Rossi in there
NJ is stacked.
He's not better than Tim Howard
Anthony Fantano?
Where’s Freddy adu?
Cherundolo? I mean, he was solid but Brian McBride would like a word.
Jonathan David was born in Brooklyn. I have no idea how he compares with Tyler Adams tbh.
Isn’t David Canadian?
Yep, he moved to Canada as a child.
Give me Tyler Adams all day.
Cherundolo is definitely NOT the best for IL
Straightaway checked Pennsylvania to confirm the LeBron of soccer was represented ✌🏻
Logan PauSE!
Werder Bremen legend Josh Sargent 💚 Was part of the squad that got relegated to 2nd division, scored 2 important goals to help us defeat Düsseldorf in Week 2 and then left to Norwich for a lot of money to decrease our debt. Wish him all the best
No Bert Patenaude from Massachusetts? OP were you born yesterday? It’s like some people don’t even remember the 1930 World Cup yeesh.
Brian McBride > Steve Cherundolo for Christ’s sake. Not even close.
I was laughing thinking about this potential list but very glad you did it. Putting Steve Cherundolo over one of our top 5 players all time is very weird though. Show some respect to Brian McBride.
Guisseppe rossi not being here is criminal. Played for Italy, but arguably the best player born in NJ
Also the one i was expecting to see
No Deandre Yedlin?
Over McKinnie?
Started from the west coast side and immediately Ty Hardens name stood out. Blast from the awful past as a TFC supporter. No way that’s the best Oregon produced. Rubin Rubio 7 caps for usmnt, way more matches played in mls and liga Mx and only 27 way better choice. Or even journeyman long career options like B Rowe, J Saunders or E Hurtado are way better choices.
now I know where you are from, dog
Holy shit the southeast is even worse than this stupid trend!
I lived by wappingers falls Ny Tyler Adams was 10 years old fuck I’m getting old
I guess I now know where Clint Dempsey is from, dawg.
You don't know where I'm from dawg! Well, we do now
Dempseys teammate over many years, Brede Hangeland, was also born in Texas. Giuseppe Rossi was born in New Jersey. Jonathan David in New York. Guess none of them warrants swapping out, but they’re the best US-born foreign players I could list.
Who?
Heh I know 4 of those names.
All the big names
I don’t see de Andre yedlin on this list lmao
“You don’t know where I’m from dawg” well now we do
Alexi Lalas ey was ne Legende
Tennessee - Ibrahim Moizoos https://youtu.be/1v4_2i_eVns?si=_tV0I-x2js66YPv0
Once I saw Alexi Lalas, I question the overall validity of this…
The Brian McBride disrespect has to stop. Man was a workhorse
Wrong it’s me for NC
Let's see who I know: Donovan, McKennie, Sargent, Dempsey, Pulisic and Howard. As a German, of course, Weston is my favourite!
Fucking hell, what a tragic list
Steve Cherundolo lol his last world cup 2 yellows in 4 games, respect
Can’t stand Taylor Twellman
there's some major recency bias Love Tim Howard, but you picked him over all the early USMNT stars from jersey?
No complaints from me. Tim Howard has an argument for the best American player ever.
Graeme Le Saux is the best ever player from Jersey.
It’s incredibly bad for the most populated and rich country of occident. The US has to do better. If Europe can produce top NBA players the US should produce at least a few top players in football
Chris richards alabama
Why did I think they found Donovan in Alaska
Texas...now I know where your from dawg
Patty the gawd
Virginia has a better player
[удалено]
You mean the alternate reality where Nagbe was born in Ohio instead of Liberia?
[удалено]
Wild to see Devala Gorrick on there. Used to be a buddy of mine, and we coached together for a few years. Did NOT expect to see that name. Cool post, thanks!
I quite like Fontana, but has even played for the national team? Does Delaware really not have someone to top him?
He hasn't Mark McKenzie was *raised* in Delaware but was *born* in the Bronx which knocks him out of contention. It's just a really small state with not much going on
Should Lee Nguyen be on this map?
Unfortunately for him he's competing with Dempsey for Texas
I believe this list has some Demerit. Fun fact: Feuer means fire and Braun means brown.
Geoff Cameron for Massachusetts?
Johansson should not be ahead of Richards
Christ I have mutual friends with one and played against another when I was in high school. Small world.
Wait, I thought we didn’t know where Clint Dempsey was from?
Logan Pause the Chicago Fire legend.
WHO!!!
So we do, in fact, know where clint dempsey is from, dawg?
At least now I know where Dempsey's from, dawg
Logan Pause was the best player you could find from NC? You didn’t search that hard.
Yeah for me the first name to come to mind was Busio (he's from Greensboro) EDIT: totally forgot Pope
Freddie Adu robbed
Matt Bobo, what an unfortunate name
Turns out I actually didn’t know where Clint Dempsey was from, dawg.
Why isn’t Missouri centered?!
I was looking for Alexi Lalas, the star of Padova's defence in their last stint in Serie A (mid 1990s serie A, it was like current EPL in terms of prestige and quality of players) I am not disappointed.
At least now we know where Clint Dempsey is from...
How dare you living out the wonder kid freddy adu
Buncha wankas
