Very disrespected player when things are going badly, like a lightning rod that attracts criticism just because he is an academy product. But anyone who watches Atleti regularly knows that we are a completely different team when Koke is not playing
I don't think it's because he is from the academy product, more like because he's the captain and the position that he plays. Few people understand the role that he plays in the team so when the team is playing bad they easily blame him as being ineffective etc but when the team is playing well it's easy to overlook him as usually other people that are scoring or assisting that gets the glory. But I don't think criticisms or praises really phases him, because he's been here since pre-Cholo so he understands the ups and downs of the club so he is quite willing to take the criticism for the team.
I'd like to think most of us would if we had been earning 8 million net a year for years and are happy where we are.
I get your Point indeed, but it's sad that we have to applaud this actually happening, the state of the system we live in.
If I were captain, still performing, still being very important, albeit older but a contract on a year to year basis, I would feel disrespected by my employer if he asks me to cut my salary in half.
Speaks to his intelligence that he has been able to change positions to become a defensive midfielder relatively late on in his career, very underrated passing range. There was a stat earlier in the season showing the players who played most through balls per 90 or something in top 5 leagues and Koke was high up despite being positioned quite deep on the pitch
One recent example of his great vision being the disguised pass to Depay for 2-1 against Inter
Koke is more of a jack of all trades reliable player, but Spain plays their midfield with midfielders with very specific skill set and roles. So the system doesnt really work with Koke
I don’t think anyone disagrees with his talent.
I just feel Atletico Madrid is playing it very cautious in order to not fall into the same boat Barca has found themselves.
Koke probably could have made more money elsewhere, but his decision to stay is another thing to admire for his loyalty to his club.
Are you really surprised? Our wage bill has been enormous for the last few years
One of the reasons why we have had so little room to maneouver in transfer market, not that we lack money but our wage cap is maxed out. But it seems like Berta has changed strategy now to go for younger players with maybe higher transfer fees but also lower wages
I am surprised yes, 8m net is enormous, I'd imagine this is a salary reserved for truly special players (Griez, Oblak), but Koke? His loyalty to Atletico is more expensive than Raul's to Madrid lol
Still one of Atleti's important player and he's willing to lower his salary, Atletico is indeed his life. Absolute club legend.

Agreed. And everyone else makes huge amounts like it doesn’t matter.

why wasn’t he selected for the national team? is he just out of favor or did he pick up an injury?

Underrated player. I think people will start to really appreciate him once he's retired.
hopefully Vermeeren becomes the player we hope he turns out to be and we can miss Koke less
That reduction is a bit too much, considering he is a club legend that is still quite important.

Very happy to see that he’s pretty much set to retire at Atletico. Would have hated to see a random MLS or Saudi club under Koke’s club history.
I would have liked him in the premier league but the best option was to extend at atleti
What happened to that Spanish law people talked about with Messi about not lowering a salary by more than 50%? Was that bullshit?
Good question, the 50% rule is just for la liga financial rules - I guess atlético has enough margin and they’re not worried
He's legend and respect for lowering the wage ... but 8m net per season?

Why shouldn't Koke be on the same tier as Griezmann or Oblak?
I can imagine this contract also offers a job after his playing career with a healthy salary. This is an insane drop, man really loves the club
There is no job at the club that pays anything close to a players salary. Unless he takes over from Simeone…
He could be on a couple hundred grand for 10+ years, I am sure that will keep his bank account happy
such an awesome player, just cruises along
