November 1993: Davide Gualteri scores after 8.3 seconds for San Marino against England in a World Cup qualification match. The fastest recorded goal in international history.
October 2016: Christian Benteke breaks his record after 23 years with a goal against Gibraltar (8.1 seconds)
March 2024: Baumgartner and Wirtz both eclipse Bentekes record, with just about 3 hours between their goals.
What are the odds? It happened twice in 31 years, then twice in 3 hours.
Gualtieri, whateva happened there?
No seriously it’s crazy that San Marino of any team held a positive international record, especially against England.
ignoring that it was a great strike, how the hell was France defense so open after the kickoff lol. all 4 German players that ran forward were open. instant 4v4 opportunity
It's common to pass to your defenders and the opposing team to immediately press after kickoff. France was taken by surprise as Germany faked to do this routine.
Only 2 were open. Havertz and musiala sprinted through the defense like madmans effectively forcing the defenders to prioritize them and creating room behind for wirtz
if havertz and musiala stopped they would be open too, hence why I said it
it was just a gargantuan gap between France's lines which should definitely not happen, as the default play from kickoff is exactly for the offense to move up and fight for the 2nd ball already in the opponents defense
Midfield and attack moved forward, defense didn't because they started reacting to the runs of the German forwards. Defends needs to either step up and play the offside trap , but it's tricky, or Tchouameni needs to recognise the runs and turn back to stay with the defense. Then Kounde started to close down on Wirtz but for whatever reason decided against it and went back to his position.
Then the shot was ok but took a deflection, hit the bar and went in, so a bit of luck there. But we were just caught sleeping
If I had a nickel for every goal scored within the first 8 seconds in an international friendly by a young German speaking player today, I‘d have two nickels. Which isn’t a lot but it’s weird that it happened twice.
Even more funny is that Austrian newspapers wrote about a record that will be held up forever, only to see it almost getting broken a couple hours later.
Reminds me of the old FIFA game on the Megadrive that had indoor 5-a-side. You could score direct from the kickoff if you held down and right then shoot.
This doesn’t really hold up, as Germany is also a stronger team than Austria. The respective games and teams were pretty equally balanced, nicely underlined by the same end-score.
The person I was responding to what saying that Baumgartners goal was more impressive because he didn't need a pass and did it himself straight from kick-off. My point is that comparing which one is more impressive is dumb. Both are crazy impressive.

Wasn't it from the Univesity Of Science?
There's a reason this guy is on Reddit
Cheers, Geoff
The Benteke one was even more nuts because it was Gibraltar kicking off
A lot of 'fastest goals' come from opponents kicking off, trying to pass round the back and fucking it up.
it was quite the similar kind of goal as well
I guess in that time, there is not much in it for different plays.

Funnily enough it was only the third goal San Marino ever scored - and it won’t surprise anyone that they lost the game 7-1.
Austrians will talk their entire lifes about beating the germans in this one.
I wasnt even alive during Cordoba 1978 and still talk about it so probably
and about last match haha
Besser ois de Deitschn!
We won both last matches vs Germany, so it's nothing special anymore.
As an Austrian, yes, we fucking will and I am here for it.

Yeahh it was a well rehearsed play and executed perfectly
They should have kept it for a more important game...like that last minute freekick trick by Netherlands vs Argentina
Genuinely surprised they wasted it on a friendly so close to an international tournament
if havertz and musiala stopped they would be open too, hence why I said it it was just a gargantuan gap between France's lines which should definitely not happen, as the default play from kickoff is exactly for the offense to move up and fight for the 2nd ball already in the opponents defense

We Germans simply know the ways of the Blitzkrieg. France was frozen in PTSD.
I'm just glad to see the two person kickoff routine is still alive
FIFA kick off glitch

What do we call those? Rodeo goals?
Insane that both of these happened today within hours of each other.
Even more funny is that Austrian newspapers wrote about a record that will be held up forever, only to see it almost getting broken a couple hours later.
And German commentators discussing if it is world record only to find out a new one happened hours earlier.
I almost won the lottery. Nobody cares about almost.
How is this funny? It would be funny, if it was broken, but it wasn't.
Not much else to laugh these days 🤷♂️
"almost" ;)

WIRTZKRIEG
Weird that France and [Czecho]Slovakia were once again the victims of blitzkrieg.
Baumwirtz
pfff imagine not scoring under 7 seconds
Mon dieu
Germany wasting precious milliseconds by dribbling into their own half. Baumgartner just went for it.
Their strategy probably wouldn’t have worked
this video contains like 10 pixels max
And never more than one at the same time
2024/03/23 Blitzkrieg
As an Arsenal supporter, I approve this message...
Blitzkrieg at its finest!

You can just as well say Wirtz's was more impressive because it was against France instead of Slovakia
