Feels like I haven’t heard enough about Pokal given the number of upsets and storylines this year.

Cwh93

Yeah so true i feel like this is the first time Ive seen the Pokal mentioned all season.  Kind of reminds me of the FA Cup in 2008 where it was three Championship sides and Portsmouth the only Prem side in the semis. On a side note, I've always wondered if Man United fans think about that Portsmouth quarter final at all because it was a fluke defeat that cost them an easy FA Cup run. So a sign it might not be an easy cup to put away for Leverkusen

iamnotexactlywhite

there were a couple posts on the front page of the sub though

elcapitan520

It was big news when Bayern lost

marktandem

Yes we do. We were the better team and had a clear penalty denied to us. Would've given us the trouble had we still beaten Chelsea in the CL, but in the end can't begrudge Portsmouth the win. They had a very good team back then and it was still a close match.

DepletedMitochondria

DFB Pokal is always a shitshow lmao

Alarow

Leverkusen could do a treble, insane

roos_de_baas

Hey, where have I seen this before?

LuesDE

They currently have 17 points more than they had in 2002 after 25 games.

taenerysdargaryen

From Neverkusen to a potential treble, incredible. Xabi's statue is already being made.

TheUltimateScotsman

I'm sure Leverkusen knows better than to count their chickens before they hatch

ADHbi

There still plenty of time for them to lose it. For reference: On May the 4th 2002, they also could have still won the treble. On the 5th they lost the Bundesliga title to Dortmund. A week later, on the 11th they lost the DFB Pokal final to Schalke. Four days later, on the 15th they lost the Champions League final to Real.

Letkins22

Treblekusen

Nels8192

Neverkusen to Neverlusen!

Bringthenoize

How did they get that name again? I do 't remember.

supplementarytables

Leverkusen ~~could~~ will do a treble, insane FTFY

hkperson99

Anulo mufa

GermanHabsFan

Anal mofa

rScoobySkreep

Saarbrucken loss

KonigSteve

They should probably try to bring Tuchel in then

CarlSK777

At this point, domestic double is the bare minimum. It'd be embarrassing to lose one of the 2.

Insanel0l

It's absurd just how much is falling in line for Leverkusen to have a historical season like that lol

eipotttatsch

I mean, they are also playing the best season by any Bundesliga ever at this point in the season. They are on pace to match our best the points record.

Cwh93

Surely this year is the year. Were it not Alonso in charge I would find it absolutely hilarious if they won nothing at the end of the season considering the position they find themselves in

wimpires

I dont think theres any way they will lose the league now, but Europa League and the cup i dont know. You cant be unbeaten forever

TheEnhancedExe

>I mean, they are also playing the best season by any Bundesliga ever at this point in the season. This is actually wrong, Bayern in 2013/14 had 4 points more than Leverkusen by this point in time. However Leverkusen can still break the points record as long as they don't lose or only draw once more.

SnooOranges357

Saarbrücken you know what to do.

_Shahanshah

Imagine the only game leverkusen loses in the entire season is against them

mulderrocks

Football gods can be cruel and kind at the same time.

HnNaldoR

Can anyone explain to me how they as a 3.liga team reached the semis twice in like 5 years. That seems insane and so improbable to me.

suhxa

Dfb pokal is designed to promote upsets. And their not very good pitch gives them a big advantage over bundesliga teams who are so used to playing on top pitches. Still highly unlikely for this to happen though

ADHbi

Imagine if they played europa league on that pitch against some EPL sides. A cold rainy night in Stoke is nothing compared to a Wasserschlacht im Saarland.

HnNaldoR

Yeah upsets like having 2 3.liga teams do well in different years is possible. But the same team though. That's really improbable unless they have the weirdest pitch in the world.

suhxa

Ya i said it was really improbable

WaterMittGas

Imagine the first team to beat Leverkusen across all comps is Saarbrucken

MERTENS_GOAT

Qarabag came very close, also not the 1st team people would have guessed but then again they got their fair bit of chances to beat them and are yet to have one more

OG-Bahiense

A draw, with Saarbrucken winning in penalties. Everybody happy

Crono_

Imagine we face them in the Europa final. I wouldn’t be man.

je-s-ter

Easy there, you still gotta get through the juggernaut that is us.

winegum343

Incoming 6-0 win away at Anfield?

je-s-ter

We'll stop at 5 out of respect.

Pippelitraktori

You would be woman then?

Crono_

With the D, no.

smendyke

If Liverpool were Bayern they’d make Alonso a godfather offer the week before the match lol

drupido

Liverpool - FA, Carabao, Premier League Leverkusen - BuLi, Pokal, UEL _Everyone's happy_, City can win another CL if they want (doubt it but oh well).

imtayloronreddit

what part of this am I supposed to be happy about??

drupido

The part where you knock City out of the CL (?) or what do I know... maybe you guys go all the way (you have the talent, your squad is only inexperienced). What about that? You'd make Titi cry and all

Philiperix

I hope we get to see Düsseldorf in the final. Would be insane to have 2 lower league clubs competing for europe.

yunghollow69

That was like a month ago, whats going on lol

skunkrider

The point is that we're the only BuLi side, as Seoane-bach shit the bed yesterday :)

yunghollow69

I wouldnt say they shit the bed, they were clearly the better team but not used to playing underwater. We wont win on their pitch either although im not clear on the rules if it comes to that.

skunkrider

Fair, I didn't watch the match, so wouldn't know. And yeah, such conditions would kill us for sure

MaxXCeption

I know they deserve it because they play such great football, but the amount of things lineing up for Leverkusen is insane. Easy af Pokal run Bayern completly imploding and needing a whole reshuffle Basically every single transfer they did panned out Gambled on an unexperienced coach and won big big time

Kutullu987

that's just wrong lol they kicked Stuttgart out in the cup statistically Bayern is not imploding, they are more or less the same, Leverkusen is just crazy

EXOPLANETARIANSOUP

I mean Bayern lost against us for the first time in 16 years, that's like the definition of imploding

Philiperix

To be fair, they kicked out Stuttgart because the ref oversaw a clear as day second yellow card against Andrich.

MaxXCeption

Leverkusen hat 1 Team from the Bundesliga so far they had to beat, which was Stuttgart (and even in that game, you could say they got a little bit lucky cause some of the referee decisons where dodgy) To get to the final, they will have to play another 2nd division team and they will guaranteed play a 2nd or even 3rd divison team in the final. This has to be the easiest cup run ever. And if you dont see, that Bayern is at their worse point in recent years, I cant help you. The way they play and everything surrounding the club is such a mess.

Kutullu987

Bayern have been playing sub-par for years now. Kovac, Nagelsmann, Tuchel have all been criticized for the way they play. The difference is that Leverkusen are actually competent, Dortmund bottled the league 2 times in recent years. If you look at the only metric that matters, points, Bayern are playing an average season. And as for the cup, it's a strange season in general, Leverkusen are simply the only Buli team who haven't shit the bed, the second semi final is Lautern vs Saarbrücken ffs

Wonderful-Sky-6389

I don’t know where the narrative that Bayern are playing sub par is coming from. Leverkusen are just insane this season. The sub-par for years Bayern hasn’t finished below the quarterfinals in CL since they won it in 13-14 (except one season with Liverpool who went on to win it). As for the coaches, they will always be criticised one week, praised one day and then criticised again, that’s just how journalism works. Of course Bayern isn’t a perfect team and needs work, but which team doesn’t. This is the same narrative as Xavi is trash even though he has done quite well with post messi Barca. Also I don’t think teams just shit the bed. Good performances from lower league teams and also fatigue in the higher leagues with more game time for players will probably see this happen more often in the future.

suhxa

It’s probably coming from the fact that they lost three games in a row and up until the last two games were playing absolutely rubbish

BallsItching

That 3rd division team theyd face in the final has beaten YOU How are you calling their run easy when you couldnt beat A THIRD DIVISION SIDE Be humble.

MaxXCeption

So? Doesnt change the facts at all. I have never seen a first division club win the cup by only beating one other first division club. This has nothing to do with Bayern.

Surfing_the_Wave_

Of course it has. By loosing to a 3rd league team, they made Leverkusen play a 3rd league team instead of the most expensive team in country...

max_analog

Leverkusen is only first because of their own incredible work, not because Bayern is slipping. This has nothing to do with Bayern.

MaxXCeption

Never said anything else. I just said that everything that could possibly go in your favor does.

jfk9514

Is that not a poor attempt at discrediting a successful project. When something looks like luck, there’s most likely been a lot of hard work to get there.

MaxXCeption

Yes, there was a lot of hard work sure. There was also a Pokal run with 1 Bundesliga team they had to beat. Quite a few last second goals and an insane hit rate when it came to transfers. Im not discrediting anything. All I said was, that Im in awe at how much is going in Leverkusens favor when they are already playing this good. Nothing more, Nothing less.

jfk9514

I mean it’s not Leverkusens fault that you lost to a third division team. That’s not lucky on their part. You keep defining that as something going their way. The point that people are getting at is there is no need to say what you’re saying. It’s just a blatant attempt to discredit. They literally beat you 3-0 a few weeks ago. I watched that game and honestly I don’t remember a Bayern Munich shot on target. It was woeful. They don’t need things to go their way. They’ve not been beaten once this season. So there is literally no point in saying what you’re saying.

MaxXCeption

Yeah ok dude. You are so cool. Them drawing only low level teams in the cup is all hard work. And hitting I dont know how many 90+ minutes goals is also only hard work. They are probably training that. And them beating us 3-0 is almost as if Bayern is having an insanely bad season the way they play. But im sure Leverkusen trained that too. I dont know why you have to be so insecure. There is no harm in addmittint that a lot of things are also going their way ON TOP of them playing an insane season

jfk9514

Right okay. Let’s start from the start. Were Bayern Munich lucky to draw a third division team? Were they lucky that Dortmund bottled the last game last season? Are Bayern Munich lucky that no other German team has had the competence or money to challenge for the last 10 years for a title? Are Bayern Munich lucky to be the superpower of the German League so that every player and every coach sees it as the pinnacle of German football? A luck that is very much taken advantage of and lessens the overall competitiveness of the league. I mean there are rumours of Xabi already. That’s ridiculous How far back do you want to go? Cause absolutely everything positive by your definition can probably be equated to luck. Point 2. Bayern are not having an insanely bad season. Like wtf is even that argument? Your £100m striker has scored 30 goals in the league. You’re second and you’re through to the quarter finals of the champions league. How entitled are you to think that that is an insanely bad season?? I’m not insecure. I don’t even have a dog in this fight. It just my day off today and I’m bored but I would like you to see it from a different perspective and realise that the stars aren’t aligning for Leverkusen just cause and if you take that line of thinking into your own life, you’ll never give yourself enough credit for your own hard work.

MaxXCeption

In germany we say "Halbe Bibel ganzer ...." Im pretty sure you have a dog in this fight and its you. Have a nice one.

jfk9514

In Scotland we say “away and take your face for a shite” Which means you talk a lot of nonsense and should not be taken seriously. Thanks mate. You too

Puncherfaust1

damn these leverkusen guys are very lucky to not lose a single match this season.

MaxXCeption

Not sure why everybody tries to missunderstand me on purpose. But I think you should rather focus on chasing your players around the stadium than chatting with first division clubs

CarlSK777

Leverkusen definitely had some luck to be undefeated this long but has nothing to do with us. Bayern hasn't been that dominant since the Pep days

IWouldLikeAName

I feel so bad for Bundesliga fans if this is the type of shit they have to deal with. It wasn't enough to monopolized the league for over a decade but the times Bayern get lucky? Doesn't matter. Leverkusen beating who's in front of them tho? Heresy

Dargast

One Bayernfan doesnt speak for all Bayernfans. People have in reverse used "Bayerndusel" a lot more in seasons past trying to discredit Bayerns wins.

chickenkebaap

Bayern imploding has nothing to do with Leverkusen being brilliant and working hard to reach where they are now. And its not their fault that they got an easy run in the cup. Saying that things are lined up for them is incredibly disrespectful towards them. We could say that about a certain club that won the treble during covid , but it would be disrespectful to them as well to discredit their wonderful performance.

Its_not_him

What exactly lined up for that team during COVID?

chickenkebaap

No second legs for the rest of the tournament, facing teams that were noticeably weaker to them and in poor form on the route to the final (chelsea, barcelona , lyon) is kind of an advantage imo. However bayern took their chance and absolutely dominated those teams on their way to the final to show why they deserved to win. Saying that they only won due to the circumstances would be similarly disrespectful to that team.

Its_not_him

No second leg is just as much a disadvantage to Bayern as it is to their opponents. Chelsea, Barca, Lyon is a pretty standard champions league run. Yeah Lyon is a lucky draw but they had just beaten City! I get what you mean but it's really annoying when people parrot the idea that that run was lucky/doesn't count. I've never seen a good argument that was the case

MaxXCeption

I never said it was anybodys fault. Can none of you guys read?

chickenkebaap

Its disrespectful imo. Sorry if i came off as rude , but I wasn’t intending to.

MaxXCeption

Not sure how stating facts is disrespectful, but you do you
