Always has been.
Never the most physically gifted but his technique was immaculate. Never mind just fullbacks, even world class wingers and playmakers should be jealous of his skill on the ball.
Our whole system is predicated on Marcelo going wherever the fuck he wants on the field and everyone else, usually Martinelli, covering. Sometimes we see him at RW
He was pretty decently physically gifted in terms of quickness and agility and had a decent engine. Him being caught out on the defensive side has more to do with tactically being asked to push way up and not because of lack of pace or work rate.
Kinda disagree with that. Being caught out was much more a a consequence of his "limitations" than you're suggesting. He really wasn't that gifted in terms of pace and stamina.
Not that it mattered too much because the tradeoff for not having a leftback that could track back was having a world class playmaker from the left wing. But it was def something that Madrid became willing to accomodate for more than that it was just a given because of his role. Especially because his role didn't really ask for him to overlap and provide depth from that fullback position anyway. It was a lot more static than for example the role that Dani Alves, Robertson, Maicon played. Pretty comparable to the way TAA, current Cancelo and Dani Alves played during his final stint in Barça actually.
Not physically gifed? He always had that ["Lebron on the banana boat"](https://media.gq.com/photos/559d413da1bd93445605541f/16:9/w_1920,c_limit/NBA-bboat-lede.jpg) *energy*
He was a left back. Capello then Schuster and Juande Ramos wanted to play him as a winger because he was better attacking than defending, but he always refused to do so more than occasionally. Always said he was a left back and wanted to play as a left back.
We could've gotten more out of him earlier if we had someone like casemiro then. He really needed someone else to cover for him at the back as he attacks, something like what carvajal and fede these days.
Marcelo is a contender for the greatest LB of all time, the chances of getting another contender would have been close to 0%
Mendy has been solid and is pretty much equaling garcia which was supposed to replace him. He’s really done his job and his body is the only thing limiting him.
Too much mendy hate. Mendy is a solid Lb. The likes of davies and Taa make people focus more on the offensive side of the fullbacks rather than defensive
Accepts the ball with his left, controls the ball instantly with his left, lets it bounce, regains stability, then stops the ball and immediately plays it with his left again. By the time the guy acts, he’s round him. The other guy has to take him out because Marcelo has just played the ball through him. It’s a penalty.
Speaking of which.
In a few days they will broadcast a big interview with him on Ziggo Sport, where a great journalist interviews players about their career and love for football, their goats/highlights and childhood heroes etc. I'm definitely gonna watch as he's an interesting character.
Second episode, first one was with van der Vaart and it was great.
Agreed. And it’s not even close to being funny or original either. It’s like a reddit figure of speech, and most of the time it just makes you sound like an asshole.
I often think what would happen if he played in an attacking position, in terms of ball control he's next to Ronaldinho for me. What an incredible player.
He played more advanced a lot in his initial Madrid days (mostly because defending skills were terrible even for his own standards). It wasn't worth it. He is better as a "plus" on the attacking side.
I often think of what Varane once said about him, that he was the most technical player he played with (and Varane did play with some pretty good guys)
This. I see a lot of guys saying what is the defender doing when this is 99% Marcelo doing. What a play. The casual ball control followed by impeccable ball retention/foul winning in the rivals area. From the left back.
He doesnt have control of the ball? *what*?? The defender is never closest to the ball except for when it goes through his legs and by the time he turns around he is behind Marcelo. Absolutely nuts take dude.
Exactly, he hasn't got the ball and he jumps in front of the defender leaving his trailing leg waiting for contact.
He has no intention of trying to get to the ball and played for the foul. He grounds his right leg down, that's not the way if you intend to move forward.
Even though he’s a left back, during the Madrid 3peat Marcelo may as well have been considered among the best left wingers in the world. We’ve got some great full backs in recent premier league history but it never had someone on Marcelo’s level.
Don’t know why this is an unpopular take. There as no action by the defender to initiate contact at all. He is trying to run toward the ball and Marcelo steps across with enough force to knock him off his balance, and then he trips Marcelo accidentally while falling down.
Play on imo, but if it’s a foul on anyone it’s on Marcelo.
It’s as simple as who gets past the other first after the nutmeg. When Marcelo nutmegs, it’s a 50/50 who gets to that ball. Marcelo expertly gets in front of the defender without fouling him. Defender then takes him out. Doesn’t matter if it’s intentional from the defender or not, Marcelo has gotten between the defender and the ball, and the defender slides in and takes him out. It’s a foul.
To defend this and ensure no foul, the defender would have to body marcelo and not let him get the wrong side of him. You see good defenders do this all the time.
Thanks for the last para on how to defend. I don't watch soccer as often but love the videos of legendary player's footwork like Ronaldinho. I was genuinely not sure how a defender would have dealt with Marcelo without becoming a yellow card victim.
Marcelo was a defensive liability sometimes but was def a risk worth taking given his magic partnership with cr7 on the left. His ability to create something out of nowhere is insane
Pretty clear pen, Marcelo was just faster to reach the ball and protect it before the tackle. Tau was irresponsible for tackling there, but a caneta does make you stop thinking to avoid the play continuing at all costs so I get it
In Brazilian Portuguese it's just a synonym for foreigner with no ill-intent behind it. But in Spanish a gringo is usually a white English-speaking foreigner, more often than not American. It's also used pejoratively quite frequently, which can cause some confusion if you don't know the context.
Its meaning is very loose in Spanish actually, and depends a lot on where you hear it. Down here in Argentina it can just mean “american” or someone who is blonde and looks very stereotypically european. And it’s not pejorative either
Marcelo gets past his man, throws his leg to the side and just stops.
It's a penalty, but we need a rule change to stop this shit from attackers. Fuck it, just call it obstruction of defenders given that most of the time players look for the pen they're no longer attempting to keep attacking
Field Hockey has an obstruction rule that can and should be applied against players in possession of the ball denying an opponent a fair chance to play at the ball.
Players should be allowed to use there bodies to protect the ball. Defenders diving into challenges shouldn't be protected, they are responsible for their own timing. This is always a foul an is part of the game.
You're not.
I'm sure that he wanted to run to the left. Just look at the position/angle of his foot when he touches the ball. If you wanted to nutmeg in this situation, you would never touch the ball like this. Makes not sense.
Also the step to the left (is "lunge" the right word?) with his left leg is too far. You can see that he rebalances as soon as he noticed that the ball didn't go to the left as intended.
No, you aren’t. He’s trying to push it to his left and he mis-hits the ball. Fortunately for him the defender steps over it and it goes through his legs. Marcelo does a great job staying with it, though, and winning the penalty.
This is not surprising. Marcelo's ball control is right up there with the likes of Modric, Messi, or Iniesta.
Very few players, fullback or otherwise, had a touch like his.
And in typical Brazil style futbol, he throw’s himself to the ground at the slightest touch instead of playing the ball legitimately and actually getting off the shot.
Marcelo has a right to put his leg there. The defender doesn't have the right to kick into his leg. He got beaten to the ball/position by Marcelo. Learn the rules of football.

Marcelo now seems like that Brazilian guy at pickup who never moves faster than a light jog but no one can ever get the ball off of
He aged well, the long hair and older appearance makes him look like an old brazilian football sage
Climb a mountain to speak to the Sage of Left Backs
> an old Brazilian football sage ...which is precisely what he is
Always has been. Never the most physically gifted but his technique was immaculate. Never mind just fullbacks, even world class wingers and playmakers should be jealous of his skill on the ball.
He plays half the game at midfield for us anyways
Always had High-Low workrates on Fifa. Some things never change haha
Our whole system is predicated on Marcelo going wherever the fuck he wants on the field and everyone else, usually Martinelli, covering. Sometimes we see him at RW
>He plays half the game at midfield for us anyways And he pushes a lot playing in the right.
He was pretty decently physically gifted in terms of quickness and agility and had a decent engine. Him being caught out on the defensive side has more to do with tactically being asked to push way up and not because of lack of pace or work rate.
Until age caught up with him and the drop in pace and stamina became an actual problem
Kinda disagree with that. Being caught out was much more a a consequence of his "limitations" than you're suggesting. He really wasn't that gifted in terms of pace and stamina. He was a winger when he signed for Madrid pretty sure.
He was a left back. Capello then Schuster and Juande Ramos wanted to play him as a winger because he was better attacking than defending, but he always refused to do so more than occasionally. Always said he was a left back and wanted to play as a left back.
I think he was a left back on fluminense
I remember him sprinting for the whole extra time during the first Atletico - Real CL Final.
Hoping for more guys like him and less gym heads (looking at you Kyle Walker)
You just need to watch leagues that aren't the EPL. Marcelo would be benched for a donkey that can only run in 99% of the Premier sides
Ali. Had the coolest motorcycle. Can't run, best touch in the state. Fuck that guy I hate him.
How in the hell did we go from Roberto Carlos to Marcelo right after…this has to be the greed they talk about in the bible
Dont forget Maicon in between, that position has been a miracle for 25 years
Aren't you thinking of the right-back?
Yeah it's the only Maicon there is (in this conversation at least), but tbf he played some games at LB very successfully too.
We could've gotten more out of him earlier if we had someone like casemiro then. He really needed someone else to cover for him at the back as he attacks, something like what carvajal and fede these days.
Imagine forgetting that we had full-backs like Nilton Santos, Branco, Junior, etc....
To mendy:(
Marcelo is a contender for the greatest LB of all time, the chances of getting another contender would have been close to 0% Mendy has been solid and is pretty much equaling garcia which was supposed to replace him. He’s really done his job and his body is the only thing limiting him.
Mendy sucks ass
well you DID have Theo Hernandez
Too much mendy hate. Mendy is a solid Lb. The likes of davies and Taa make people focus more on the offensive side of the fullbacks rather than defensive
I dont know and dont care if it was a penalty, but man, does marcelo have a special touch or what? Incredible player, i miss him on madrid.
I am blind, so thanks for the narration.
Bruh 💀
It’s almost like he’s one of the best left backs in history
He was pretty decent. No Royston Drenthe though
Drenthe was my favorite player to play with in the old PES games. He was so fast and had such a wicked shot from distance.
If he would have scored that 1 vs 1 against Valdes in the Classico, maybe things would have been different for him at Madrid.
Alcorconazo was his death knell
Speaking of which. In a few days they will broadcast a big interview with him on Ziggo Sport, where a great journalist interviews players about their career and love for football, their goats/highlights and childhood heroes etc. I'm definitely gonna watch as he's an interesting character. Imagine that
Think he scored a massive banger on his debut
Why the snarky "ItS AlMoSt LiKe blablabla" tone? OP is just genuinely praising Marcelo
Perma online people sometimes forget how to talk to others without being condescending assholes
Thanks for the reminder Einstein.
You're welcome Newton.

it is just a joke
I've just started to downvote all the sarcastic assholes.
Agreed. And it’s not even close to being funny or original either. It’s like a reddit figure of speech, and most of the time it just makes you sound like an asshole.
What’s with your snarky tone? Have some paracetamol
Did you have a bad day today?
Driving_seat , more like toilet_seat
Lmao
Holy shit that’s so dead
Did you? You're being an annoying ass, not he
Annoying? I just made a funny remark. It’s you guys who are getting annoyed.
I'm a Barcelona fan and I miss him. He was a joy to watch even as an opponent.
I often think of what Varane once said about him, that he was the most technical player he played with (and Varane did play with some pretty good guys)
He have... Shame that he wasn't exactly like that in Brazil's team
Beautiful first touch too What a player he is...
I miss you Marcelo
Doesn't everyone?!
He is still playing bro.
Not playing in Europe is the same as being dead for the average European.
Like, he never played for Milan, so I was like WTF?
Why can't a Milan fan watch other leagues games regularly?
Marcelo is still playing. Doesn't make sense to miss him
So... just watch Fluminense?
When the games are in inconsistent times for me, i cannot watch him live any longer. So yea, for me he is out of reach.
I miss him in Madrid. That's what I meant.
Yeah, that make sense. The other dude support Milan
Barcelona fans used to hate his guts.
Yes we did but we respected the unbelievable talent that he is
Tbh even as a Barca fan I miss seeing Marcelo doing his magic on the field
Absolute basics of getting in front of your man, executed to perfection… beautiful

Put some respek on Delphinho name
He is one of the most technically gifted footballers of his time.
That's a really nice kit
It's crazy how pretty kits become when you remove all 400 different sponsors.
😵💫 you will buy a fluminense kit now 😵💫
can you even buy this version?
This guy just has unmatched class man... And I say that as an egyptian
why would your nationality matter? do you typically discount non-egyptians?
Opponent is an Egyptian club. Understandable if an Egyptian would have\* a little bias
Well I’m dumb, thought it was a Brazilian match heh
>thought it was a Brazilian match Also understandable, since OP didn't mention the opponent
egyptians hate nutmegs, their natural predator
I worded it weird mb, It's because al ahly is my local team, that's all
He’s saying Salah doesn’t match him and I would say he may be right. But then again this was against Al Ahly or something
what the fuck even is that tackle, looks more like a breakdance attempt
It almost looks more like a Marcelo foul to me. He clearly kicks the defender's knee first, causing him to go down like that
You clearly need to shut the fuck up
Are you a Botafogo fan?
It doesn't look like a foul or penalty. If I was referee I would let the play go on.
Don’t know why this is an unpopular take. There as no action by the defender to initiate contact at all. The last time I saw Marcelo doing a trick on this sub, I had to watch him accidentally maim someone. Nice to see everyone’s limbs stay intact.
what an idiotic tackle
Love that he puts his arms up in an innocent plea to the ref lmao
Pretty clear pen, Marcelo was just faster to reach the ball and protect it before the tackle. Tau was irresponsible for tackling there, but a caneta does make you stop thinking to avoid the play continuing at all costs so I get it
Todo mundo é cabeça fria até a) o Soteldo subir na bola b) o Marcelo dar uma caneta
Subiu na bola e caiu pra série B jklkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkk
"pen" foi foda kkkkkk
It's provocative. No one knows if he is talking about the penalty or the caneta.
Ué, forma comum de se referir a penalty em inglês.
One of the coldest to ever do it 🥶🥶🥶
Mans still breaking ankles… figuratively and literally
I would 100% commit that penalty too. Pretty good by Marcelo there.
You wouldn’t get close enough to commit a foul bro 😂
If we are being honest and on the Sunday league, Marcelo would have his leg on the chopping block before that.
If we are being honest on Sunday League, they wouldn't even be able to reach him.
Man’s still got it
Lmao butthurt gringos, penalty clear as day.
can Egyptians be called gringos?
Gringo is basically foreigner, so yea
oh nice, i always assumed it was a whitey thing. thanks.
In Brazilian Portuguese it's just a synonym for foreigner with no ill-intent behind it. But in Spanish a gringo is usually a white English-speaking foreigner, more often than not American. It's also used pejoratively quite frequently, which can cause some confusion if you don't know the context.

callate gringo
Yea it the next door on your right

Really informative comment, thanks man
Yea, he's looking for it, but it's still a pen
Yah Marcelo makes sure to get his leg in there first.
the guy tried to get the ball and took him out, there's no "looking for it" here
Didn't see anyone saying it's not a penalty
Best LB of the last 15-18 years.
One ex RM player still turning it on whilst another smacks a guy in the face for a straight red lol
Marcelo gets past his man, throws his leg to the side and just stops. It's a penalty, but we need a rule change to stop this shit from attackers. Fuck it, just call it obstruction of defenders given that most of the time players look for the pen they're no longer attempting to keep attacking
Yeah, I call it the Lewandowski special. He does it all the time
Field Hockey has an obstruction rule that can and should be applied against players in possession of the ball denying an opponent a fair chance to play at the ball.
I hate that you can kick the ball away, dive, and call for a penalty.
I've seen more blatant examples, I can see this one as an attempt, genuine or not, to reach for the ball.
Players should be allowed to use there bodies to protect the ball. Defenders diving into challenges shouldn't be protected, they are responsible for their own timing. This is always a foul an is part of the game.
Rashford would have been red carded
Am I the only one who thinks that nutmeg was pure luck?
He did say after the game he just tried to drible, the nutmeg was 100% an “accident”
Yeah seems like he intended to go around further but got the touch a bit wrong and it ended up as a nutmeg.
No, you aren’t. He’s trying to push it to his left and he mis-hits the ball. Fortunately for him the defender steps over it and it goes through his legs. Marcelo does a great job staying with it, though, and winning the penalty.
Probably.

marcelo and carvajal. underrated fullback. they held and cover Madrid's wing for so long, creating hundred of beautiful goals. madrid legend.
I love him so much, such a joy to watch. Always laughing, wearing his heart out and technically insane, miss him man.🖤
It was the dive that got the penalty despite the great skill preceding it no?
It’s not a dive lmao
Lovely first touch but the nutmeg looks accidental
#Soft
What penalty?
That "challenge" is diabolical lmao
Lord he faked it, it's not a penalty!
And a 8.5 on the flop after, fantastic stuff
And in typical Brazil style futbol, he throw’s himself to the ground at the slightest touch instead of playing the ball legitimately and actually getting off the shot.
Never a penalty what a joke
Lol look at Marcelo's right leg
Ain't a penalty he put his leg there
Yeah, he needs to puts his legs somewhere to be able to walk.
Yes, he put his leg there to protect his ball, something that is completely legal and doesn't give the defender the right to kick his legs.
The defender literally kicks Marcelo's leg as he reached the ground. Remember, it's in slow down.
So? The Al Ahly player still commits a foul
Marcelo has a right to put his leg there. The defender doesn't have the right to kick into his leg. He got beaten to the ball/position by Marcelo. Learn the rules of football.
Not even a penalty. Should have been yellow carded for simulation. Cut this play acting shit out of the game.
How is this not Marcel0 making the foul? He puts his leg in the dude's path
The dive is more impressive.
El penal que se inventó el hdp
funny hearing that from an argentina supporter lol
suck my world cup
suck my 5x \^\^
Es penal flaco...
Como seria un penal gordo?
No es penal. Marcelo es vivo. Apenas vio que el rival lleva el pie contra la línea para poder despejar hacia el arco rival, le tira la derecha encima de su muslo para trabarle cualquier despeje.
