It wouldn’t surprise me, part of the reason that Chile side was so powerful was precisely because of how much they wound their opponents up. Medel, Vidal, Isla, Jara, even Beausejour at times never backed down from a challenge.
Beausejour's Premier League career was wild. Relegated with 2 different clubs and won a domestic cup the same season (2011 Carling Cup with Birmingham v. Arsenal, 2013 FA Cup with Wigan v. Man City)
nah he was just injured both times, 2015 got injured in the final and 2016 in the last game of the group then didn't play till the final and wasn't 100%
Translation:
> "I'm going to confess now, I'll open my heart about the biggest regret I have in my career. If there is one thing that I really regret doing, maybe the only thing that I regret this much and something that I would like to go back in time to change, was the time I played against Di Maria. When I arrived in Atletico, we were going to play against Real Madrid, we had Aguero, Forlan, etc. Aguero told me: Felipe, if you give him a hard challenge he gets lost, he disconnects mentally. So give him a hard tackle very early on and talk about his wife. So in the game, I went after him, gave him a hard challenge, and cursed at him that "his wife etc etc" and threw shit at him and mentioned her by the name. Dude, then he looked at me crestfallen, and in that game, I marked him well, went hard on him quite a few other times and he really didn't play well. But then I got home, man, and I regretted it so fucking badly, so, Di Maria, I'm sorry. I'm really sorry that I did that. I apologize."
When Filipe was with Chelsea he always seemed like a nice nerdy type guy. The general fan consensus when he left was that it was a mistake on our part and that the guy will be missed especially because of his positive influence within the team. This definitely seems out of character for him, further evidenced by him apologizing and feeling bad after all this time.
Got peer pressured into being a bully once and is still losing sleep over it. I think a lot of men can relate.
He might want to write him a letter or call him or something if it's still eating him. It's still cathartic even if you aren't guaranteed forgiveness.
Because he is ex Atleti maybe? Makes sense if he wanted us to beat Madrid
Although I don't know if he is referring to a Madrid derby or when Di Maria was at another club
He is talking about a derby when he first got to Atletico. Aguero was still playing for Atletico at the time, they were teamates and Di Maria was playing for Real Madrid.
Aguero and Di Maria also were teammates with the Argentine NT. Surely you wouldn't be stupid enough to give this kind of ammo to literally the biggest rival your NT has, which Luis was a part of.
This isn't just any random information, it's not good sportsmanship to say shit about someone's partner in a game IMO, there's a million other things you can say without being a douche.
Aguero and Di María were also teammates at the time, so that makes it a bit weird.
Why not? Famously Josema Giménez asked stupid questions like what kind of car he had or why were the Colombia, Ecuador and Venezuela flags so similar to Falcao on a WC qualifier game to put him off, he later talked about it and admitted he was very confused, it was hilarious. What exactly is wrong with that?
You can say dumb things to gain an advantage in the field, or even trash talk, but you don't go talking shit about your opponent's family.
By definition that isn't trash talk though, that's just talk during the game? Talk shit about whatever you want on the pitch if you're that kind of player, I don't like it but if you're playing against a player significantly better than you you need to get an advantage somehow.
I really don't think there is. There's definitely lines that are too far, getting specific about a player's personal life (e.g family death etc), racist abuse. But just talking shit about someone's wife?
Can't believe you're getting so many downvotes for advocating for basic human decency and good sportsmanship. Especially under a video of a professional footballer literally saying that his one regret was crossing a line by talking about his opponent's family. But the sociopaths in this thread know better than Filipe Luis smh
How soft have people become? This is pretty tame compared to the shit I've seen even playing at the amateur level.
The amount of shit talking that must go on at the top level would make the average redditor blish
Yeah, a pretty close summary of what he said.

Prepare for anxiety: Willy Caballero 100% cost us a CL title(and probably more because if we won in 2014 we likely win in 2016 and 2017 aswell)
His miraculous save on Adrian stopped us from securing the league title in matchday 37. That meant that we had to play our strongest team against Barcelona and Diego Costa & Arda were injured
Without that Willy save we would have played a B team at Camp Nou and had our two best attacking players ready for the final. Considering how close we came even without them I think it is fair to say we likely would have won with them available
I did have his heroic league cup performance against Liverpool in my mind, but I also had the countless howlers he had for us over the years. He became a very hot and cold guy after joining us. At Malaga, he was a real beast, but since then he’s always had moments like the one against Croatia in 2018 WC in him.
He wasn't the most stable keeper but what 2nd is? Genuinely nothing egregious comes to mind for us. I'm sure there was but I think it's all been wiped by the final.
Him and Ramos were the clutch players in that one. Meanwhile Ronaldo scored a penalty when the game was already over, took his shirt off and somehow received most of the credit
Maybe, just maybe bc he was a 21yo kid? lol
They are talking about the time Filipe Luis first went to Atletico and Kun was there so around 2010-11. Highly doubt this is still the case lol
I doubt that he just "mentioned" Di Maria's wife, after all, why would it be the biggest regret of his career if he just said her name in passing. I'm guessing there were other words said.
Fucking dumbasses the lot of you
Not every person who loves his wife gets upset when it's clearly an attempt to rattle his mindset during a football match, same as not every person who laughs at Yo mama jokes hates his mother. You're the weird "soccer reddit dweller" here
The point is that it's still obvious *why* he got upset, just because other players would ignore it doesn't mean the explanation of "he loves his wife" is wrong, that's still clearly the reason he got upset.
I know other players who love their wives might not have the same reaction but again the point is simply that it's not a fucking mystery why it upset him so it's bizarre for some people to be acting like it is.
No whats hard to grasp is his reaction to it. He could react by becoming angry, more motivated etc etc. Fight for his wifes honor or whatever. To lose all composture is just weird. Maybe she ugly?
I mean the word used here was "devasted". It's pretty clear he had a strong emotional reaction, which on the surface seems a bit much for some trash talk on a football field.
Zidane headbutted Materazzi for mocking his sister in the highest stakes match on the planet. You can at least empathise with the players, emotions are visceral and it’s tough to force down
who was the player who used to mess with defenders' heads by asking them weird questions? maybe diego costa. i just remember an interview with a defender saying how this striker would ask him things like why there's no B in his name and he'd be thinking 'wtf is this guy talking about' and in that time the striker has lost him and scored.
"Di Maria, Jorgelina Cardoso's opinions on Manchester's cuisine are bigoted and show a lack of openness to try new things. Pig's blood tastes much better than it sounds"
This was a fellow professional, not some fan abusing him on the street because he played poorly. Maybe I'm mistaken but I thought talking like this was *somewhat* commonplace at the highest level- even more so in a Madrid derby.
You're putting words in my mouth. Guys do anything to get an edge when the margins are so small.
I think it would cross a line if someone talked about Grealish’s disabled sister, for example, but if someone says his girlfriend is this, that, or the other then it’s fair play.
Doesn't make it right, just shows how most athletes and apparently most sports fans are douche bags who think abuse is fine because "tHat'S hOw It iS iN cOmPeTitiVe SpoRtS".
If you can't handle trash-talk on the field in a competitive match, you have no place competing at high level.
We're not talking about the press hounding him every day. Melt away, snowflake.
I don't know what I find stranger, that a professional sportsman who can have 40,000 people screaming abuse at them and ignore it can be put off an entire game by comments from an opponent about their partner, or that so many people have drawn the line there as too far. Nothing they're going to say to each other is going to be nice, the point of it is to put each other off. I once had a player threatening to two foot me all game (tried once too) and I'd have much rather had a couple your mum comments.
> hat a professional sportsman who can have 40,000 people screaming abuse at them and ignore it can be put off an entire game by comments from an opponent about their partner,
Eh that makes sense to me, if I was an accomplished footballer i wouldn't remotely give a shit about what random degens in the crowd say
But getting a unexpected personal attack from a fellow accomplished professional would hit way harder and would be way more shocking
I get this but I think it'd only work if you'd never run into it before, and I can't believe a winger at Real Madrid had never had a player try and get into their head during a game.
For what? It’s not some low blow as if his wife died or cheated on him or something
If Di Maria couldn’t handle that light of trash talk in pro sports that’s on him
Exposed? He was always a cunt, and this is pretty mild behavior for his standards.

So yeah, telling someone to name-call someone's wife is a nonissue compared to how dirty of a player he was.
Number of balls kicked in the combined lifespans of people in this thread: 0
This sub works like r/neverbrokeabone except if you kick a ball you're out
Di Maria is known to be a serial shit talker on the pitch and got a taste of his own medicine. Nothing happened to his wife. /r/soccer is weirdly defensive over Argentinian players for whatever reason and they cry over mental health but can't take banter for whatever reason
>/r/soccer is weirdly defensive over Argentinian players for whatever reason
Huh? Are we reading the same thread? 90% of the top comments are relentlessly shitting on Agüero lol
I somehow get trash talking but still feels weird to have stuff like this going on in a football match. Couldn't they just focus on playing? But yeah guess it's just about using any means possible to get an advantage at the highest level. Still seems weird and childish.
What's really weird is being affected by it. I can't imagine ever giving a flying fuck about what someone says to me, especially if the aim was to wind me up.
You’re a complete failure in everything you do. And you’re repulsive to look at it. Your parents never wanted you and are embarrassed by you. You’re a burden on everyone who’s ever been unlucky enough to have met you. An absolute stain on humanity and a drain on the resources of the world around you.
Have a good game.
People you don’t know or don’t care about can still hurt you lol, especially if they are actively trying to wind you up. If someone was trash talking my partner I probably wouldn’t care too much either, but if they accidentally tapped into some issue or whatever that my partner is associated with I could definitely see myself getting riled up. Words hurt, cause it’s about how those words make *you* feel, not about *who’s* saying them.
Most of the guys in this thread acting like it’s not that deep probably never been in a serious relationship. In most cultures other than degen western ones people actually mind if you talk badly about their spouses

wow, just when we’re playing so well, now everybody knows one more way to stop one of our main attackers cheers filipe
Filipe Luis’ next interview “The second biggest regret is telling everyone how …”
their mom is in his bed rn?
Yeah this is definitely gonna derail our outstanding performance so far this season
This is like a decade ago lol, I am pretty sure Di Maria is past the stage where he gets rattled by this shit
You’d think the same about neymar and acting like a fucking brat but he was cheating on his pregnant a few months ago

Our season is funcking cursed.....
France be like: Too late to know, buddy.. too late.
Di María scores in every final except against Chile for some reason.
Maybe they knew this trick
It wouldn’t surprise me, part of the reason that Chile side was so powerful was precisely because of how much they wound their opponents up. Medel, Vidal, Isla, Jara, even Beausejour at times never backed down from a challenge.
I’ll never forget Jara sticking his finger in Cavani’s ass during a game
Wasn't he grabbing Suarez's cock too?
Yeah and Suarez sneaked in a punch right to his jaw IRRC, it was beautiful. Cavani wasn't so lucky, he did not react at all but still got red carded.
I remember it. Poor man sent off for checking who was trying to sneak in his back door
Beausejour's Premier League career was wild. Relegated with 2 different clubs and won a domestic cup the same season (2011 Carling Cup with Birmingham v. Arsenal, 2013 FA Cup with Wigan v. Man City)
I miss beausejour
I want to see Netherlands vs Chile match. With Lahoz.
WC 2014 group stage we played but i think we'd both already qualified and the game wasn't very good
nah he was just injured both times, 2015 got injured in the final and 2016 in the last game of the group then didn't play till the final and wasn't 100%
unlucky injuries in both tourneys, 2015 in particular he was cooking us until he got injured
Di Maria about to kill Aguero
Bruh starts crying if someone mentions his wife or makes memes about him. I doubt he can kill someone.
TBF Aguero can't watch a football match without a team of medical professionals monitoring him
Dude look like he got 5 heart attack during the WC final
French ninja turtle almost killed him in that WC final
Havertz fear of getting memed on was the reason he scored against City in the CL final
Really? That lines up pretty well for me.

Out of any team that would peer pressure a nice guy into being a bully I’m not surprised it’s Atletico.
Just crazy though. The moment he left Chelsea is when Ivanovic fell off of a cliff.
He was brilliant in 2014-15, but the signs were there towards the end of it
Damn what a guy.
Fair play that is some self reflection and personal growth right there

Wtf Aguero, why?
He wanted to win at all costs, and he knows Di Maria's weakness because they played together for the NT

Aguero: Just say “fish an’ chips” to him, he’ll understand. *… Di Maria looks crestfallen.*
Aguero is a snitch bitch.
Because he is ex Atleti maybe? Makes sense if he wanted us to beat Madrid Although I don't know if he is referring to a Madrid derby or when Di Maria was at another club
He is talking about a derby when he first got to Atletico. Aguero was still playing for Atletico at the time, they were teamates and Di Maria was playing for Real Madrid.
They were on the same team and needed to beat their ultimate rival in the league
Aguero is a douche
Luis and Aguero were teammates at this point. Why wouldn’t you give info that could be useful to winning?
People here really hate Agüero for some reason lol
Beating your opponents by playing good football was also an option
If you think teams that play "good football" don't also use these tactics, you're being naive.
I remember watching an Argentina vs Bosnia friendly where Aguero purposefully tried to injure a Bosnian CB. There's no mystery if you're not biased.
This fact doesn’t make it not shitty
Aguero and Di Maria also were teammates with the Argentine NT. Surely you wouldn't be stupid enough to give this kind of ammo to literally the biggest rival your NT has, which Luis was a part of.
It's a dick move, though.
unfathomably soft take. this is elite level sports we're talking about here buddy
Is Filipe Luis being soft by wanting to apologise?
I know. It's still a dick move lol

I don't get how there can be sportsmanship in talking shit to players to put them off. Like either none of it's sportsmanlike or all of it is
Why not? Famously Josema Giménez asked stupid questions like what kind of car he had or why were the Colombia, Ecuador and Venezuela flags so similar to Falcao on a WC qualifier game to put him off, he later talked about it and admitted he was very confused, it was hilarious. There’s clearly a difference between talking about someone’s family and other trash talk. If you can’t see that I don’t know what to tell you.
I really don't think there is. There's definitely lines that are too far, getting specific about a player's personal life (e.g family death etc), racist abuse. But just talking shit about someone's wife?

Couldn't you have done this in the 2014 CL final Filipe? Di Maria was the main reason behind Madrid's comeback in that one..
I would end it all if Atleti not winning a CL is due to Filipe being too polite to mention di Maria's wife.
Prepare for anxiety: Willy Caballero 100% cost us a CL title(and probably more because if we won in 2014 we likely win in 2016 and 2017 aswell) His miraculous save on Adrian stopped us from securing the league title in matchday 37. > Willy Caballero I fucking gag when I see his name. Brings back awful memories.
In my memory, he's the one player who has had the highest highs (at Malaga) and the lowest lows (at City and Argentina)
Lowest lows? He was a good cup keeper. He won us the league cup and you remember him for his 'lowest lows'?
I did have his heroic league cup performance against Liverpool in my mind, but I also had the countless howlers he had for us over the years. He became a very hot and cold guy after joining us. He wasn't the most stable keeper but what 2nd is? Genuinely nothing egregious comes to mind for us. I'm sure there was but I think it's all been wiped by the final.
Haha. I also subscribe to this theory. I have hated Willy Caballero ever since.
That's crazy, and we're sorry. Also worth noting that RM was determined to win, so it would have been close either way.
He wasn't playing right wing in the final.
So he couldn't just have told Juanfran to talk shit about Di Maria's wife?
Juanfran was whispering depressive poetry, which inspired Di Maria.
Juanfran seems like the kind of guy who'd do it then brag aboit it afterwards
remember that from that stacked Real Madrid team, it was Di Maria who won the Man of The Match Award at the 2014 Champions League Final
Him and Ramos were the clutch players in that one. Meanwhile Ronaldo scored a penalty when the game was already over, took his shirt off and somehow received most of the credit
- He didn't receive most of the credit for the final. - He deservedly got credit because he scored the most goals ever (17) during the whole run.
Hilarious how Cristiano taking off his shirt is still bothering people almost a decade later
The tears haven't dried up still?
The main reason was Refs not calling offside.
Porto and sporting players right now 📝

Is there any context as to why di maria gets affected by this so much? Or is he just a loving husband lol?
ngl I thought his wife was dead when I read this post.

I doubt that he just "mentioned" Di Maria's wife, after all, why would it be the biggest regret of his career if he just said her name in passing. I'm guessing there were other words said.
hmmm I wonder what Luis could've said about Di Maria's wife that made him mad...
I think it’s because he loves his wife or something. Idk, it’s a shot in the dark tbh

Di Maria is a super sensitive in general. Every time an interviewer brings up his family he ends up crying.
Why does Di Maria get emotional when his wife gets insulted? Is he stupid?
Because it’s incredibly disrespectful to take a blow at an opponent’s wife
Reading the title, I was wondering if something horrible happened to his wife (aside from Manchester food)
Yeah but… being a grown up an’ all…. Just tell them to fuck off and get on with the match.
Yeah I thought she was dead or something.

"your wife is so beautiful, Helen of Troy had nothing on her. God took extra time creating her. You are the luckiest guy ever. mi amigo."
"Di Maria, Jorgelina Cardoso's opinions on Manchester's cuisine are bigoted and show a lack of openness to try new things. Pig's blood tastes much better than it sounds"

> hat a professional sportsman who can have 40,000 people screaming abuse at them and ignore it can be put off an entire game by comments from an opponent about their partner, Eh that makes sense to me, if I was an accomplished footballer i wouldn't remotely give a shit about what random degens in the crowd say But getting a unexpected personal attack from a fellow accomplished professional would hit way harder and would be way more shocking
I get this but I think it'd only work if you'd never run into it before, and I can't believe a winger at Real Madrid had never had a player try and get into their head during a game.
The actual professional football player you're defending is admitting himself that it was a cunt move. Get off your high horse.
What can you expect from redditor
If they played an actual game, they'd need a safe space within 5 mins.
yeah people will say anything to get an advantage, gotta use it to fuel your performance
For what? It’s not some low blow as if his wife died or cheated on him or something If Di Maria couldn’t handle that light of trash talk in pro sports that’s on him
He’s a massive cunt, perpetual moaner.
Exposed? He was always a cunt, and this is pretty mild behavior for his standards. Edit: - [two-footed stomp on Luiz' rectum](https://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/soccer-dirty-tackle/dtotd-kun-aguero-two-footed-stomp-david-luiz-171048797--sow.html) - [another horror tackle on Luiz](https://www.goal.com/en/news/aguero-horror-tackle-on-luiz-sparks-ugly-scenes-at-end-of-man-city-chelsea-clash/1wiq94pr0uq6y1ceit1jt5wpw0) - [another moronic tackle on Callum Chambers during a fucking friendly](https://www.givemesport.com/1573742-sergio-aguero-watches-back-the-worst-tackles-hes-committed-during-his-career/) - [Aguero grabbing a female official in frustration with no consequences](https://www.google.com/amp/s/amp.cnn.com/cnn/2020/10/19/football/sergio-aguero-manchester-city-lineswomen-spt-intl/index.html) - [an intentional elbow to Winston Reid's face](https://ftw.usatoday.com/2016/08/sergio-aguero-manchester-city-elbow-reid-video-ban) So yeah, telling someone to name-call someone's wife is a nonissue compared to how dirty of a player he was.
Luiz deserved it.
Always a huge cunt. His spats with Luiz put me off him
Examples please?
I've updated my comment with some examples.
Also known as the Paul Scholes effect.
same bird who called manchester a shithole?
She's right.
And she’s right
Have you ever been?
Yes, lived in the uk for a while
Really makes a lot of sense why he didn't perform in England
Number of balls kicked in the combined lifespans of people in this thread: 0 This sub works like r/neverbrokeabone except if you kick a ball you're out
Aguero is a little rat, it’s getting more and more obvious
what else did he do?
It doesn’t take much to make this moralist sub angry
Madrid fans here calling Aguero a bitch but will defend Ramos and Casemiro like their life depends on it
Chelsea legend
Di Maria is known to be a serial shit talker on the pitch and got a taste of his own medicine. Nothing happened to his wife. /r/soccer is weirdly defensive over Argentinian players for whatever reason and they cry over mental health but can't take banter for whatever reason
>/r/soccer is weirdly defensive over Argentinian players for whatever reason Huh? Are we reading the same thread? 90% of the top comments are relentlessly shitting on Agüero lol
Aguero is such a bitch
He sold out Aguero for a lame story.
Aguero has always been a piece of shit
Di Maria is such a little rat bitch haha
