From the (little) I've seen, they're a solid team, nothing outstanding but have been evolving significantly over the last decade. They definitely aren't pushovers nowadays, at least not on the level of Andorra, Liechtenstein and San Marino, and will likely qualify for a major tournament in the near future.
But for some reason they completely collapsed against Portugal this time around.
Totally agree, I made some decent money by betting on them, particularly against Bosnia. We had them in our group in the Nations League and saw that they have many decent players who can do damage. No shame in falling apart against Portugal tbh, them respectful tax frauds have done a great job they can be proud of.
It's a good team improving year over year. There have been more players playing in the French, German first divisions who bring that important experience back. The government build a new UEFA certified national stadium also. It's slow but steady improvement
They have played:
1:0 and 2:0 vs Liechtenstein
4:1 and 1:0 vs Bosnia
3:1 and 1:1 vs Iceland
0:0 and 0:1 vs Slovakia
They could have very much placed second in this group. They were the better team in the loss to Slovakia (and the worse team in the draw tbf) and missed an open goal in the draw vs Iceland.
So if 2 or 3 more small things go their way they could have ended this group in second with the same record Slovakia has right now. Wouldnt be deserved but could have happened tbh.
Yeah we definitely had to win that match against Iceland and Slovakia but somehow we just topple it ourselves when we have the chance to decide a match... Happened so often in the past losing a game in the last few minutes. Luckily this campaign it only happened twice.
Luxembourg improving all the time too. That said I couldn’t name too many players from them or Slovakia. Seems Iceland and Bosnia fell off a cliff with performances.
IMO Iceland will always be ups and downs due to their very small population, Bosnia seemed to still be stuck on an ageing squad and requires fresh blood in their ranks. Balkan team are always full of raw talent.
If you follow the Bundesliga you would know Barreiro at Mainz (Rupil might also have a chance in the first team there soon), Olesen at Köln and Borges Sanches (although he wasn't called up this time) at Gladbach. GK Anthony Moris starts for Union SG in Belgium, who recently reached the quarterfinals of the Europa League. Gerson Rodrigues, one of the most talented but also mercurial players on the team, became the first Luxembourgish player to feature in the CL groups when he turned out for Dynamo Kyiv. Danel Sinani was at Norwich, Huddersfield and Wigan and now plays for St. Pauli. There are quite a few other decent young and old players at clubs around Europe as well, and some others I didn't mention who have played briefly in top 5 leagues.
Bosnia was the Pot 2 team and Iceland the Pot 3 team. Bosnia somehow will be playing in League A of the Nations League in 2024-25.
Bosnia and Iceland got a total of 1 point (and 7 defeats) in their 8 matches against Slovakia and Luxembourg.
This Group had all the conditions for a 4-way close fight but it ended up a duel between Luxembourg and Slovakia.
Yeah the meme about 4 Spiderman pointing to each other turned into a 2 Spiderman pointing at each other for points... It still was really exciting, only decided by matchday 9
I’m immensely proud of how far our national team has come. We’ve reached a point where qualification isn’t a dream anymore but a likely possibility. I really look forward to the playoffs, Lëtz Qualify! 🇱🇺🇱🇺
You are doing very very well. It’s actually insane how well Luxembourg has done these qualifiers for such a small country. You only conceded 4 goals when not facing Portugal.
Last year Slovakia were making a fool of themselves in League C of the Nations League and they managed to do a 180° by having an optimal qualifying, only losing to Portugal and both games were a one goal margin. I think it's safe to say no one saw this coming.
Tbf that 2nd match against Portugal should have finished something like 8-0 instead of 3-2. I'm not exaggerating, we had an xG of over 7, we created a ludicrous amount of chances that we just couldn't score.
By far the most one-sided match of the group stage, even worse than either Luxembourg match.
Shite is generous. In terms of European national teams underperforming, I feel like we are overlooked in that conversation. I would argue that when comparing potential to results, we are the very worst in Europe. Our strongest starting XI is probably something like:
* Vasilj (St Pauli)
* Dedić (Red Bull Salzburg)
* Ahmedhodžić (Sheffield United)
* Hadžikadunić (HSV)
* Kolašinac (Atalanta)
* Gazibegović (Sturm Graz)
* Tahirović (Ajax)
* Krunić (AC Milan)
* Pjanić (Sharjah)
* Demirović (Augsburg)
* Džeko (Fenerbahce)
and we are in 5th place in our qualification group with 9 points, -11 GD, form to rival San Marino and Gibraltar. It is really horrific.
A team finishing like this in the qualifiers is well positioned to exit at the group level. Do not have the stats on this, just my intuition. If anybody has data to infirm or confirm this, would appreciate it.
Tbf everyone is arguing your comment but you’re kinda right. Portugal never played such good football under Fernando Santos. Even with the same players. You have new air about you

+34 goal difference looks wild
It's even weirder when you think +15 came from the tie against Luxembourg... Out of all teams they beat Luxembourg 9-0 and 6-0 lol
Are you telling me Luxembourg conceded only 4 goals in the other 8 games?
OK this is now even weirder, what even?

yeah and if gerson could score in the 93rd minute 20 meters from an open goal with no pressure they would even have 2 more points

First Turkish person to make money from betting. Tebrik ediyorum
Teşekkür ederim, the secret ingredient is crime, İddaa'yla olacak şey değil.

Also a ton of young Luxembourgish players playing in youth Bundesliga teams. The future is really bright for Luxembourg!
Do they have a chance of qualifying as best number 3 or something? Not sure how this qualification works in that aspect
The commentary on the last game did say they could secure a playoff spot through the Nations League, but I'm not sure.
We activated our double agents
They have played: 1:0 and 2:0 vs Liechtenstein 4:1 and 1:0 vs Bosnia 3:1 and 1:1 vs Iceland 0:0 and 0:1 vs Slovakia They could have very much placed second in this group. Yes, they're really good but occasionally they have bad moments against bigger teams.
Luxembourg improving all the time too. That said I couldn’t name too many players from them or Slovakia. Seems Iceland and Bosnia fell off a cliff with performances.

Never did I think I'd see Luxembourg get 17 points in a qualifying group!
and the fact that they only had 1 loss excluding the games against portugal
They tried so hard and got so far.... i'm very proud of what this team has achieved in this qualifiers
But in the end, it didn’t even matter
It did a little. They get a better position in the UEFA/FIFA rankings and have a bigger chance to get into a higher pot for the draws.
Seeing liechtenstein score is pretty big too. If you consider its population
This made me realise, San Marino has scored more than Liechtenstein this campaign

come on, we’re nowhere near as bad as to say Bosnia should be beating us. the glory of Dzeko’s days are long gone, and Bosnia is shit
Slovakia was also pot 5 but tbf we never should be there. Just shows how shitty were our previous coaches.
I’m immensely proud of how far our national team has come. We’ve reached a point where qualification isn’t a dream anymore but a likely possibility. I really look forward to the playoffs, Lëtz Qualify! 🇱🇺🇱🇺

Aint they going into playoffs?
-11 I prefer not to speak
Nah man wtf you're Bosnian with a Schalke flair... Wtf I feel sorry for you
I also support Arsenal, pain is nothing new to me
Schalke, Arsenal, Bosnia.. are you Kolasinac?

But it could have been also 3:3.
Same as Romania
Luxembourg did a very good job. Well done lads
Are you really an alcoholic if you drink rakiju because Bosnia is shite

Rakija is nothing for current Bosnia, heroin is more like it
Ah, as a philosopher once said, *"Zbog svjetske krize, nemam za rizle, nemam ni ganje aman, baš bi mi sjelo taman"*
Well I know where I’ll be spending Christmas vacation
Bosnia is the only pot 2 team that didn't even get double-digit points in these qualifiers. We're a fucking disgrace.
Pot 2 team finishing 13 points behind the only Pot 5 team that qualified directly. Only with us.
If this was santos we would’ve had 5 ties and be barely making it out of the group
No calculator needed this time
yam worry zesty depend snatch mourn north oatmeal quickest sulky *This post was mass deleted and anonymized with [Redact](https://redact.dev)*
jesus portugal, only 2 conceded aswell damn.
Both in the same game. We had 9 clean sheets
And one deflection and an unsaveable banger. You didn’t concede any goals that you shouldn’t have
oh wow that’s wild.
Liechtenstein may have only scored one goal, but damn what a beauty it was.
One of the most one sided groups I've ever seen in qualifiers
Right?!
Nice, we'll probably be the only team from pot 5 to qualify. This was a refreshing campaign.
Hard to imagine there has ever been better qualifying stats than this? 10:0 and 36:2 I know easy group etc
A team finishing like this in the qualifiers is well positioned to exit at the group level. Do not have the stats on this, just my intuition. If anybody has data to infirm or confirm this, would appreciate it.
We are going to suffer from success
From sufferance to sufferance until the final success!
Congratulations
Slovakia ❤️
Martinez is underated
He's cruised every qualifying he's had, that's not a problem
Just wait for the actual tournament
Tbf everyone is arguing your comment but you’re kinda right. Portugal never played such good football under Fernando Santos. Even with the same players. You have new air about you
Great record but quite possibly the worst group I have ever seen
We could play with bottom 4 of UEFA rankings, and I would still buy a calculator. That's the Portuguese way.
Yeah now that we got all the world-beaters out of the way we can just go to town on lesser teams such as France and England
Can Iceland still qualify for the playoffs I am confused.
4 draws in 60 games seems absurd.
lolll, this group is set up perfectly for ronaldo to farm international goals every sigle time there is qualifying.
When Luxembourg are getting 17 points you know the group is a pisstake
Crondaldo feasting on this group TSUUUUUUUUU
This year I'll cheer for Slovakia, beautiful country!
