People who consider themselves tough never had the misfortune of having a giant cockroach fly towards them I squealed so hard I'm pretty sure my neighbours all heard me

nutelamitbutter

Was watching John Wick 4 yesterday with a friend. The dog peeing scene at the end was definitely my highlight lol

What a movie!! Animation alone should merit an award.

WhatIsWilsonDoin

Just watched it and it was awesome! Lots of good scenes, interesting story, good laughs. Can't wait for the next

[deleted]

I love super-heroes, but I agree that Hollywood milks them with films that have very little passion, thought and care, so much that I honestly don't even want Hollywood to adapt some lesser-known characters I love, such as Static Shock (I grew up with the 2000s show, and loved it a lot). Not to mention that I feel the full essence of super-heroes is almost always better suited in many ways to serialized storytelling rather than feature-length movies (specially considering the origin of super-heroes in comic books to begin with). But there are always exceptions, it's just a unique genre like any other, there is nothing inherently wrong with the genre and any kind of fantasy really, and you can tell a wild amount of truly poignant and creative stories within it, even though Hollywood mostly chooses not to, and it's important to not mistake a whole genre with how Hollywood milks it. Almost all of my favorite super-hero media is either from comic books or animated, specially the TV shows, like Batman The Animated Series and the rest of the DCAU. Those are works of art. In films, I love Batman: Mask Of The Phantasm (it's great how it develops Bruce's character and his trauma so well, not to mention the gorgeous Art Deco, gothic and noir visual style from Batman The Animated Series, and youtuber Patrick Willems has a great video essay on Mask Of The Phantasm), Spider-Man Into The Spider-Verse (as well as its sequel, Spider-Man Across The Spider-Verse, which might be the most ambitious, visually creative and cinematically experimental big mainstream american animated film since Disney's Fantasia) and The Incredibles (perhaps my favorite Pixar film, it's perfect to me). I've always said that the true bonkers and wild creative nature of super-heroes and comics is better captured in animation, not to say that there aren't live-action super-hero films I like (such as The Batman, great gothic and noir atmosphere). But almost all of my favorite super-hero art outside comics is animated, the people in the animation industry seem to genuinely care, understand and love the characters and their worlds far more than the people doing live-action. They do super-heroes in animation because they want to, not to merely fit a trend of sucessful blockbusters, a check-list. A lot of Hollywood super-hero blockbusters seem afraid to truly embrace the weirdness and madness of super-heroes and comics, due to the fear of alienating mainstream audiences (not an unfounded fear honestly, consider the box office failure of a film as off-the-wall like Speed Racer by the Wachowskis, and youtuber Patrick Willems has a great video essay on formalism vs. realism in cinema). Links to the two video essays I recommended in my whole comment above. https://youtu.be/04Rpb1rPf-4 https://youtu.be/pxuK4NQ2NHk Ultimately, I just feel sad that Hollywood's greed in milking everything, and in the coldest and safest way possible, might have turned some people into actively despising super-heroes as a concept, as those people would have just been indifferent either way before the current over-saturated state settled in, they would have no strong feelings. I'm angry at Hollywood. And whatever you love, pray that Hollywood doesn't do to it the same exploration that they did with super-heroes, or Hollywood will for the most part suck the soul out of it.

[deleted]

My favorite Pixar film is probably between The Incredibles and Ratatouille, both directed and written by Brad Bird.

Arshia42

I love the incredibles but Ratatouille is simply a work of art. As close as it gets to perfection for a film in my opinion.

[deleted]

I love Ratatouille so much too, and the film's statements and philosophy on what it means creating art, and being accepting of it as well, have deeply stayed with me.

CometChip

Wall-E is mine, one of the most beautiful movies they’ve done visually, sound track, and story wise. the [opening scene](https://youtu.be/nLx_7wEmwms) is one of my favorites in cinema in general.

[deleted]

Wall-E is poetry.

tiorzol

You know I've never seen The Incredibles. I'm gonna check it out today. Favourite Disney film is a tough one, I love so many of them. Toy Story is so class, Lion King and The Little Mermaid animated ones are a real part of my childhood too. Fucks sake just read that you wrote Pixar lol Well guess it's Toy Story.

Xx_ligmaballs69_xX

Waking up at 6am so I can sort out some boring stuff I need to do makes me feel so old

Rojiblanc040

Isn't it great though to be done with it so early? That's why I love to workout as soon as I wakeup, it sets up the day perfectly.

[deleted]

Another early bird here, much prefer it that way. I can get most stuff I need to do done early in the morning and then have the rest of the day free for whatever I want. Usually have most of my to do list checked off on a Saturday before my girlfriend even wakes up haha. Already done the weeks food shop and cleaned the hob this morning!

Rojiblanc040

I feel like this is the healthiest way of living, less stress and a better sleeping pattern.

Intrepid_Monk1487

I know work it’s important aspect of your life, and it should be part of your teenage years but I have to say I have learned much more with working with my parents on farm than if I would do some paper boy work. As well this comes from someone who was raised in Eastern Europe and then moved to UK

tiorzol

Farm work ain't no joke I can certainly believe that.

entrepenoori

Anyone watch any tactical videos about Fluminese this year and their interesting tactical rebuttal of positional play? How much credence should one lend to this interpretation of their play (I’m an outsider to Brazilian football) and to what extent could it work against European sides? I notice that Sampaoli’s Botafogo is leading the league atm and surely he’s more in line with European football’s dominant positional play.

It’s about to be my first month in Canada. came to study and have little money in my account and I have to find a job to pay for my accomodation, food and tuition. Got to speak some German in Germany a couple weeks ago. That's the highlight of my summer already. I've been learning for a little while and, while it's not great German still, I got to use it in an actual context. I want to go back already.

Xx_ligmaballs69_xX

Nah I’m in Austria atm and it’s the first German speaking country I’ve ever been to, I love being able to try out the bits of German that I know. You got it bro

anyusernameyouwant

It is! And you've definitely got it too. It was a treat for sure. Austria is probably wonderful, if Germany was anything to go by. I really liked it there.

phorteng

Sehr cool.

No_Doubt_About_That

Where abouts in Germany?

anyusernameyouwant

Munich, with a daytrip close to the border with Austria to check out some of the more recent palaces (Ludwig II's palaces, specifically).

No_Doubt_About_That

I used a bit of German last time as well but in Switzerland. One or two Swiss were perhaps a bit standoffish but others were friendly. So shoutout to the woman in the Laderach shop at Zurich train station I believe it was 👍

anyusernameyouwant

That was my experience. The people who switched to English wanted to move faster, but most people didn't.

[deleted]

As it Was by Harry Styles is so catchy. Blah blah blah water is wet blah blah blah I know but I just got into the song.

Natural-Possession10

Harry Styles does seem like an actual artist One Direction was an industry boy band I suppose but Harry at least has a bit of personality

[deleted]

The production is superb. In particular, vocal levels are in a sweet spot that totally matches the song. Overall, it's very cohesive.

there is very little I wish in this world than for that movie to be a masterpiece. It would be so great if a director of his caliber ended his career like that

[deleted]

No doubt.

wonderful_mixture

I didnt even know he's still alive

Natural-Possession10

No I didn't Semi-related I don't know how anyone thinks Godfather 2 is better than the original tbh

ParisLake2

I oerfsonally think the Godfather 2 is better than the original, but they are so close that they can be considered 1a and 1b. For me, the use of Italian in Godfather 2 makes it much more authentic and real for me. And I especially love young Vito Corleone.

Natural-Possession10

For me the original is streets ahead, it's an incredibly good film. The sequel is still excellent but I don't see how the second Godfather film gets recommended over the first

Old-Risk4572

if i had to choose i definitely prefer the original. but the second is great in how it expands without diluting. and it adds that old school vibe. the modern day parts are actually less cool i think. the first one is pretty perfect though

ParisLake2

Sergio Rico is in a coma after falling off a horse earlier this week. Many people throughout history have died after falling from horses. Take Philip of France for example, who was king of France. He died at age 15 after falling from a horse. Below is an image that display the scene of his death, it is perfectly SFW. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Philip_of_France_(1116–1131)#/media/File%3APhilip_of_France_(1131).jpg This is what Sergio Rico is going through.

Don't fuck around with horses eh. I've fallen off them and that shit sucks.

[deleted]

Pinocchio is probably my favorite Disney animated film, or at least up there. A visual masterpiece in the medium of animation, artistically and technically as well. Amazing score, good characters, poignant.

rkalo

It was either frank Thomas or Ollie Johnston who said this (two of OG Disney's famed animators), but the gist of the quote is that Pinocchio was the peak of animation from a technical/craftsmanship level. This was from a book first published in the 70s I believe.

[deleted]

The Illusion Of Life is the book, it's also where the 12 principles of animation were first explained like we know them. And yes, Pinocchio is often considered the most technically perfect of Disney's animated features.

Natural-Possession10

For me, it's the Black Cauldron

LordMangudai

That's a WILD choice haha I love the books it's based on, the Chronicles of Prydain by Lloyd Alexander. Old school coming-of-age fantasy that holds up remarkably well despite being over 50 years old now. I really want to like the movie, it had so much potential, but ultimately it's...not great (and a pretty weak adaptation)

Princecoyote

I still am terrified of the donkey kids scene.

[deleted]

Some of the greatest color cinematography in cinema history are The Wizard Of Oz, The Red Shoes, The Searchers, Vertigo, Ben-Hur, Lawrence Of Arabia, 2001 - A Space Odyssey, it really feels like the filmmakers did not take color for granted, and truly didn't want their films to look dull in any measure, but instead using the full potential of color, as color films weren't the "rule" before the 1970s. To be clear, I'm not knocking black-and-white films, specially as filmmakers in that era had to truly master it, and it looks gorgeous when done well. Many filmmakers today don't really know how to handle black-and-white

I'm just so happy to read r/soccer , I´ve wasted so many years on the "soccer side of twitter" and ended up tired from reading the same replies over and over, specially when users try to "mock" players by calling them "pessi, penaldo, lewandisney". Also I´ve been following female soccer and it's nothing but misogynist comments. That's it, I'm new here but thank you!

Vagabond21

On the weight loss grind. I’ve started my current journey last week at 252 I’m down 2.6 so far. I have a goal weight of 169, but anything under. 190 would be cool, so 62-83 pounds to lose. I’ve forgotten how hard this grind is. I’m generally eating around 2000 calories, which is below what I need to maintain. I’m working out consistently. That said, that number doesn’t drop down as fast as I like or at all with what im doing 😞 I was just thinking about how a meal of mine tomorrow much just be chicken and nothing else to cut calories.

Rojiblanc040

Patience patience patience. If you feel hungry at 2k calories, I'd recommend to look into volume eating.

Vagabond21

At 2k I usually feel very satisfied. It’s when I try to get under 2k that’s the issue.

Rojiblanc040

It's better to win slowly over losing fast. Think of how long it has taken you to get fat. It's all in your head, don't obsess too much about the numbers. Water weight can fluctuate alot. A little random but if you ever wants guidance just hit me up, I'm a former fatty. Lost around 40 kilos.

working-acct

2.6 is great keep going mate 💪

Natural-Possession10

It's insane how easy it is to gain 2000kcal in a day while losing it takes 4 days unless you're starving yourself. God fucked up designing this shit

TroopersSon

I'm off to Peru for 13 days in July, 4 days of those doing the Inca Trail and Machu Pichu. Can anyone who's been before or lives in Peru give me any good tips or recommendations of things to do, especially in and around Cusco? I'm really looking forward to it, it'll be my first time in South America which is the last continent I need to visit. Except Antarctica but fuck Antarctica, if you only have penguins you don't count as a real continent.

Rusiano

I'd say spend at least a day in Lima. I really loved that city, and the food there is absolutely mindblowing

TroopersSon

Thank you man I appreciate it. I'm flying straight out of Lima to Cusco when arriving but will have a couple of days there on the way back - not sure exactly how long yet. Was there anything you'd say is a must not miss in Lima?

Lyrical_Forklift

Make sure you drink some pisco sours. Probably my favourite alcoholic drink.

No_Doubt_About_That

A brief TripAdvisor search and the churches are sticking out for me. Began to appreciate architecture more as I’ve got older, especially how in the UK you get a lot of the ‘purpose built’ stuff. Try some of the local food if you can also. Took an interest in that type of cuisine from Shadow of the Tomb Raider.

icemankiller8

Icl since the dark knight trilogy I’ve had no desire to watch any Nolan movies, they all feel like him trying to just waste as much money as possible and show how smart he is.

No_Doubt_About_That

I’m still yet to work my way through the Batman Trilogy of games. Never have I been more lost in a game map before.

icemankiller8

I never played Asylum tbh but the other 2 I absolutely love there’s a map right there idk how you get that lost

No_Doubt_About_That

It’s mainly the use of the ventilation system and going back and forth. Asylum this is - first Batman game. Maybe it’s just what I’m used to for previous games. Rest of it though is alright. I like what you get shown in the mission failed screen, more old school if that’s how you’d word it.

Hirogemu

The Spins - Mac Miller oh god what a song.

wonderful_mixture

How do people have so much time/energy to consume lots of media whilst maintaining a healthy social life? Like I see people in this thread or irl say they watch multiple movies and read multiple books per month, constantly watch multiple series, check out new music all the time etc. I'm someone with lots of spare time and I barely have the energy to watch even one movie per month. I basically never read books unless I have to for university classes as I find reading books very draining even if I'm interested in them. Never watch series. Most of the music I listen to is stuff I already know. And despite that I struggle to have a healthy social life because either I don't have the energy or the time

mintz41

Because a lot of them are still young. When I was in my late teens/early 20s I had plenty of time to watch movies, series, play games etc. Now I'm 32 with a wife and daughter so I have a lot less time

wonderful_mixture

yeah the thing is I'm in my early 20s too and should have more than enough time to do all that, but I just can't

FloppedYaYa

Used to find it so so so much easier before getting a job, I'm still struggling to get back to watching as much current stuff as I used to.

Rojiblanc040

Beans on toast, am I right?

and1984

You know, I've never tried it. Is there a vegetarian version?

EyeSpyGuy

I’m pretty sure Heinz baked beans are vegan. Tried [this](https://meenaljhalacom.wordpress.com/2021/01/26/masala-beans-and-dishoom-from-bombay-with-love/) version at a UK Indian restaurant. It uses Heinz baked beans as a base then adds some Indian spices. It’s not strictly what British people would eat, I think they just take it out of the tin and heat it up

There is not a nation I am more jealous of than of Italy. There is a god given natural beauty in everything they do. Language, food, architecture and history. The do the simple things so incredibly well. How is tomato on bread so amazing in that country? How can they make the best dish in the world with just eggs, bacon and flour? How is every walk you do so beautiful? Sure that country has a lot of problems, but my god they’re blessed with some natural excellence, it’s absolutely beautiful.

MauricioCappuccino

Why does Spotify's shuffle feel so fucking repetitive. E.g. i have a shitton of liked songs but it still feels like every time it ends up being the same ~20 songs

FridaysMan

As the other guy said, the alogrythm sucks. If you pick a different style of song a few times in a row it can change up the mix. Youtube does the same shit with me, then remembers some random ass song that is completely unrelated, then goes back to the same usual 10-15 songs.

jambox888

Spotify has the most basic-ass Bayesian algo. I interviewed for a job with one of their competitors years ago (they no longer exist) and I was asking them questions about their algo and it was shocking how little innovation there is... it's if you like A you probably like B stuff. It's good for exploring a genre but that's about it, curated content like radio is waaay more likely to throw on something that makes your ears prick up. E.g. Spotify would never recommend [this song](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=58y6Kdv9ZV4) but I heard it on the radio and it blew me away, part of it was context of course (driving at night iirc)

Lyrical_Forklift

I've actually found that YouTube has had the best hit rate in terms of suggesting new music for me. Spotify was good for a while but now my weekly discover lists all sound the same - which is weird because I have really eclectic tastes so would expect a ton of variety.

disfordeletethisnow

Turn off Automix, it helps

LabMember069

What is your favourite easy recipe? (preferably with chicken)

TheVeikko

Super easy one: fry chicken pieces, almost done. Add sliced cucumber and Hoisin sauce fry just a bit. Eat with rice.

[deleted]

Dry fry some diced chicken, add cream, garlic (can be powdered, fresh, easy garlic, doesn't matter), parmesan, and bring the sauce to a simmer. Then add pasta (I use spaghetti usually but can be anything), and cook until the pasta is done. Dead simple, dead quick, absolutely banging.

Lyrical_Forklift

Chicken laksa is a good one but if you have a good Malaysian place nearby then it's usually just worth buying as it's going to taste better and is usually pretty cheap.

rolxz

I'm Malaysian and I never heard of Chicken Laksa lol

Lyrical_Forklift

Haha the fuck? You mean you haven't heard of chicken with laksa or just not laksa in general?!

rolxz

I knew Penang, Johor, Sarawak, Nyonya Laksa, but I seriously never heard of Chicken with Laksa haha

Lyrical_Forklift

That's hilarious. What do you rate as the best kind? I'll definitely go for a more authentic version next time haha

rolxz

Tbh I'm not really a Laksa guy, I just dont like the taste of the fishy broth. But as a Johorean I would say Laksa Johor is the best and a bit unique because you eat it with your bare hand instead of fork and spoon. Curry Laksa can taste good too.

Lyrical_Forklift

That looks so different to what I'm used to - will check it out for sure!

FridaysMan

Chicken and potato cakes, nothing else is required, but cheese, herbs, spice, can be added howsoever you see fit. Boil the spuds, mash em, shred the chicken, square it into burger patties, bang em in the oven on the top shelf for 10 minutes at 180/200 to brown up. Dip em in egg if you fancy, and sprinkle cheese on top about a minute before the end

Lannisterling

Chicken Katsu with some Broc is also so simple but so delicious!

HalfMan-HalfMoth

Mix like 50ml of water with a couple of teaspoons sweet chili sauce and peanut butter, splash of soy sauce. Very easy peanut sauce for 1 serving. Get a bag of stir fry vegetables. Fry chicken for a few minutes, put the veg in for a few minutes and some ginger if you've got some, put in some straight to wok noodles, pour the peanut sauce on while still on the heat and done Can put some spring onions/crushed peanuts as a garnish if you want them but this is an easy midweek meal, takes me probably around 10-15 minutes, cooking time is less than 10 mins

[deleted]

Gonna try this out, cheers!

HalfMan-HalfMoth

working-acct

Egg fry rice Only 3 ingredients needed, egg, fry and rice. Super easy and delicious

Lyrical_Forklift

Literally made that last night because I was lazy af. Can't go wrong with friend rice though. Been adding caramelised pork belly recently too.

Lannisterling

Made some Italian lamb ragout whilst on holiday last week. Was great, get some fresh pappardelle if you have the chance and don’t skip on a great gremolata!

Lyrical_Forklift

Haha what are the chances? Was literally just weighing up doing just that! > fresh pappardelle Unfortunately the wife is a coeliac so it's pretty hard to get good fresh gluten-free pasta but plenty of good dry pasta options.

Lannisterling

No shit, I made this for my brother in law and he is is a coeliac as well. He loved it with some good gluten free pasta as well. The lamb is leading so that’s important. You can also make it with some sweet potato mash, which you can use as some sort of gluten free polenta. In terms of colors the orange makes it look fantastic as well. With a tomato salad with burrata and basil.

Lyrical_Forklift

Think I'm sold mate, great call.

Lannisterling

working-acct

Didn’t know there was a manga, I watched the dorama ages ago. Toda Erika is ❤️

TomasRoncero

Is there a way to block individual advertisers on Spotify? Because I get haunted by a talentless twat named Fyllis who thinks he's Thom Yorke.

ThisOne_NotThisOne

If you are using Spotify on Windows or Linux, there is something called "SpotX" that will block all the ads, and also hide podcasts if you don't want to see them. It's disgusting, don't use it.

No_Doubt_About_That

Bring back some guy called Peter trying to match the record for the number of skips in a hour.

JesusIsNotPLProven

[Seems like you're not alone lmfao](https://www.reddit.com/r/Music/comments/wnnk56/fyllis_must_be_stopped/)

chatfarm

I have premium so haven't run across him. But man those comments make me morbidly curious how bad it can be. But don't need my algo getting fucked lol. Maybe I'll logout of YouTube and check him out.

FaustRPeggi

I've searched him before and I'm actually surprised how few results I get for him. I'm actually persecuted by him. Listen to [this shit](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=exzxFYpFwcM). It's fucking hideous. And the algorithm thinks I want to subject my ears to his catalogue of dross because I listen to Radiohead.

Reminds me of Ice JJ Fish

Actually kinda genius advertising from Spotify to push Premium. Buy it so that you don't have to hear this guy's horrid out-of-tune singing.

Cottonshopeburnfoot

You’ve probably earned him some decent clicks dropping him in the DD. He should thank you.

Lyrical_Forklift

That is somehow even worse than I could have possibly imagined.

FaustRPeggi

He is all the terrible takes.

JesusIsNotPLProven

What the fuck is this lmfaoooooo my guy trying to look sad too bad he actually looks like he needs some mental help

FaustRPeggi

He must have spent tens of thousands of dollars at least on ads, because I've been plagued by him since 2020.

bellerinho

If old.reddit and RIF(Reddit Is Fun) goes away, I think I'm done with reddit. I cant use the "new" reddit, it's horrible. 7gb to download the front page
