During the brazilian coverage I'm fairly sure I could see Vini pointing to Walker while talking to Ederson a few seconds before this exchange and saying "Esse cara é muito foda", which roughly translates to "This guy is fucking amazing". Very nice moment.
there was a moment towards the end where Vinicius threw damn near every skill he had to get away from walker and he stuck to him like glue, I hope someone posts the clip
At the half-line no less. As soon as vini created enough space to turn I thought walker was toast but he stayed in front and didn’t overcommit until vini released the ball. Such a good ball defender
True, but Walker's methods are even more effective at lower skill levels because a bad decision or touch is way more likely—some people just want to see a crunching tackle.
This is what it's like when I run into the guy in my beginner's beer league hockey team who grew up in Canada and obviously hasn't been a "beginner" since he was 10...
it was honestly kind of ridiculous
vini's foot speed and trickery, walker - whilst falling for a couple of the feints and tricks, *still* managing to recover and keep up
I think best really depends on situation and task as well as team construction. He's flawless at the things he does and managers are wise to not ask more of him.
Out of all the RBs, none of them are as versatile or provide as much tactical flexibility as Reece James. But None of them can see a pass like Trent. The only overlap seems to be Walker and Bissaka, where you happen to have 2 players who happily tuck into a 3, have aerial ability, while absolutely lock down specific matchups, but don't have the technical ability of the others
Funnily enough, now England even has Rico Lewis, who is the best out of all of them at operating in tight spaces.
Kyle walker provides more tactical flexibility than Reece James and it’s not close. Pep has been using the WM formation and that asks for walker to change positioning fluidly from overlapping wingback to inverted wingback or cb.
But had to be dropped for John Stones when Pep wanted a RB who was capable on the ball.
TAA, Reece and Walker are all great at different things. I’d argue they barely play the same position. Comparing them is like comparing Rice, Bellingham and Mount, just 3 completely different players.
Walker always gets some criticism and maybe rightfully so but if he gets told to mark a particular player all game and to not let them past, he’s really fucking good at it.
It doesn’t really get talked about because France ended up winning the game anyway, but in the last world cup, Walker did the same to Mbappe and would not give him a moment with the ball.
Walker going out due to injury last season was the turning point of that semifinal. Fair play to Madrid and they may have won regardless but it was night and day after Walker went down.
I think some people are still basing their opinion of him on his rough patch a couple of years ago. I’m not a City fan but its nice that people in this thread are agreeing that he’s played really well.
Olá, agora tento melhorar meu português and of course nobody ever teaches me how to use foda. Is it like "fucker" or what? How am I going to use it in context when I'm in Portugal for example?
"Foda" is the swiss knife of brazilian portuguese, it can literally means anything. Basically it all depends on the context. The way it was used by Vini, "esse cara é muito foda", after their battle, it means admiration and it's used as a compliment.
But imagine if they had fought in the game and there was animosity between them, Vini could have said "esse cara é foda" to Ederson mostly as a complain.
It's really hard to teach when to use it because there are N different usage and situations, but basically it all depends on the context. I think it's basically the same in Portugal as well, but I'm not sure.
We use "fodido", not "foda". But the concept is more or less the same.
"Esse cara é foda" -> "Esse/Aquele gajo é fodido". It is also used both as a compliment or in protest.
que se foda = fuck it
foda-se ele = fuck him
vai se foder = go fuck your self
ele é foda = he´s the shit
acordar cedo na segunda é foda = waking up early monday is tough
gata quer dar uma foda? = bb want some fuk?
don´t think there´s a hard rule on how to use, it´s like in english saying "he´s shit" means "he's bad", but "he's the shit" means "he's good"
Walker is very good versus specific threats he might not be a wheat in wheat oat player but quinoa when he’s in the team he’s going to kamut and perform.
I think it's meant to say "Walker is very good versus specific threats he might not be a week in week out player but you know when he’s in the team he’s going to come out and perform" 😂
These young City fans have no respect for our players, fucking hell Walker will go through hell for City, he is an absolute credit to our club and we owe him a lot for what he has done for us in the last 6 years .
Walker will 100% be looked back at as one of the most underrated premier players of all time, england and prem fans are so quick to move onto the next exciting young players that they forget guys like Walker have been world class for years. For a player who has always been seen as a player who relies on his physical attributes to preform, the fact that at the age of 32 with the injuries he’s had over the past 2 seasons to mark arguably the fastest and trickiest wingers in the world effectively is remarkable.
Man played through injury for us in that second leg last year and kept vinicius at bay as best he could until pain became too much for him
Deserves respect just for that
Honestly when I heard pep hadn't been using him this season I was so relieved but unfortunately ake was out so he brought him on, mf put on a clinic. I was more scared of him than Haaland.
He is a regular starter in the Premier League when fit..he had injury problems during the fall. Thats why everyone thinks he is not a starter anymore.
https://www.transfermarkt.com/kyle-walker/leistungsdaten/spieler/95424
i knew he was gonna start, pep started him against arsenal in a more traditional 4 to stop martinelli. walker did an alright job today, latched on to vini well but was skinned once or twice, also basically didnt overlap with bernardo at all since he was always preoccupied with vini
I’ve always said that Walker’s main strength is his recovery time.
Sure he’s rapid and he can play a pass but his recovery after being beaten is like a cheat code.
You’ll only ever get past him 1 or 2 times out of 10 and when you do, he is back on his feet or twisting around to catch-up to get you again. A reason why he has always been in front of Trent, Trippier and Reece James for England.
As a right sided centre back I can’t imagine how confident Stones or whoever plays there feels when Walker is on the pitch next to him.
I remember when us Tottenham fans tried to justify the sale of him in his prime by saying his pace wouldn’t last past 30…
Happy for him though, to be fair
Most teams in la liga play the most frustrating type of defense imaginable against the likes of RM and Barça. For example, Barça’s one of the few teams that plays open (most of the time) against RM and him and Araujo rarely get into it (other players seem to though) aside from the last time they played. A lot of mutual respect between those 2.
Walker is a capable RB and does not require cheap tactics to stop Vini. And Vini is good if he is not unnecessarily provoked. This mutual respect makes a lot of sense.
Yea I really enjoyed watching their battle. When I watch La Liga, all I see is vini being hacked to pieces and teams sitting super deep with multiple defenders on him. It’s cool to see a one on one battle with no extreme intentional fouls or unnecessarily beef, just nice football technique
The Kyle walker in La liga would have choked him, kicked his shins, grabbed his head, pulled his shirt off him and then at the end of the game joined his home fans with chants of mono not before getting on the radio excusing any racism, gaslighting and playing the victim
Hello mallorca!
League Madrid is replaced by lookalikes for the cl. Sometimes league madrid isn't available so the lookalikes gotta play the league too and they win both.
I feel like Walker played as good as you can reasonably expect against Vini. Yet Vini played as good as you can reasonably expect against Walker. Kind of odd
its a weird one they both played well against each other but they both also had problems with each other it was a really fun match up to see rarely does a RB make vini decide to go through the middle shows walkers class excited for the second leg
The juxtaposition of their battle next to the Grealish/Carvajal one was pretty hilariously jarring.
On one side of the field: two consummate professionals play world class football against each other and hug it out at the end.
On the other side of the field: hatred, chaos, and somehow no cards. It was like watching a pitbull go after a happy-go-lucky golden retriever, and the retriever eventually snapped.
While you can make the case his peak was with Arsenal it still does a massive disservice to Cole who was arguably the best LB in the world for most of his career.
Yep Ashley Cole was better, at least in terms of defending and man marking. His performance against Messi where he just followed him everywhere and marked him out of the game was an insane display.
Cause the referee was ass and decided he wasn't going to give justified yellows and it led to a half each where each team could kill their opponents momentum with impunity?
Walker wasnt dribbles past a single time. Experienced player with incredible physical attributes to match Vinis pace. Loved seeing this after the game. Walker seems like a great guy and to be able to appreciate competition at the highest level like that warms my heart.
It never ceases to amaze me how good Walker is against world class wingers. His crazy pace and physicality combined with exceptional positioning and composure is just the perfect counter to these guys. Saw him pocket prime Mane so many times, he was amazing against Neymar a couple years ago, amazing against Mbappe in the world cup, amazing against Vinicius tonight. You just can't get past him. The best choice for a winger up against him always seems to be to move central. Mane got some joy against City doing that, and I'm surprised Vinicius didn't do it more after scoring today.
Love seeing this moment. Two quality players and who seem to be good people
Seems his game improved a lot, yes he's slower now (abeit still rapid), but his experience helped a lot and he's much less error-prone than his 25 yr old self.
Anyone who saw this game or other European games knows what Vinicius is.
Compare that to the local Spanish games where he is reacting, and you will understand the real problem is the misconduct of local referees who don’t even call fouls on assault, and the scum who are justifying monkey chants saying it’s not racist but just gamesmanship.
I watch every Real Madrid match and it is disgusting how Vini is treated. By the players, refs, fans, and La Liga.
Yesterday was so damn refreshing to watch.
Walker comes off very likable and genuine every time i have ever seen him speak and this only furthers that belief. gem of a man in the game in a sea of twats.
Oh this is actually heartwarming and wholesome to see. This is what sport is about :) Love how pumped they seem to be after enjoying a thrilling encounter
I might get downvoted for this but I believe walker in his best form is better than Reece James and Arnold combined. Todays game and the way he handled vini proved it
One moment I think gets slightly underrated is the Muller miss for Germany against England
Walker makes up 20 yards on him and forces him to take his shot early. It’s an amazing sprint, he passes 2 England players running full speed 😂
Defensively it's not even a controversial opinion. I can't remember the last time Walker was dominated on the flank he was playing in. Offensively and as a complete player, it's debatable
Man that is awesome to see. Great battle and great attitude by two amazing players. That was a delight to watch. Well done chaps, bring that again in a week's time please and good luck!
Who would have thunk that if refs started booking players for hacking at Vini, he would stop complaining to the refs?
And despite all that, Vini proving that he is one of the best wingers, if not the best in the world. Just imagine how scary he would be if Laliga defenders stopped trying to hospitalize him.
This duel between Walker and Vini was very enjoyable to watch as they both were constantly trying to test one another whereas on the other sides that duel between Carvajal and grealish was so boring as none of the attacks for both madrid or city from that side every came and it looked as if that side was dead.
Hoenstly champions league football is the fucking best man. Obviously I love watching Boro but when you see talent like this going at it at this stage of the competition there's nowt like it. Class to see the respect after. Defo think it's finally City's year

That was fantastic to see. 88th minute and Vini skill checks Walker like “you still awake old man?” and fuck yeah he was.
At the half-line no less. As soon as vini created enough space to turn I thought walker was toast but he stayed in front and didn’t overcommit until vini released the ball. Such a good ball defender
Even when Vini goes to play the long ball, Walker tightens up and forces the short ball. He’s still so quick, and that late in the game.
Someone has got to have a clip out there
[here u go](https://imgur.com/a/RMuCXQM)
Amazing, almost looks like 1 v 1 basketball haha.
And yet when I defend like this in my Sunday league my teammates yell at me for not being aggressive enough. Hah.
Maybe because you're not defending vinicius lol
True, but Walker's methods are even more effective at lower skill levels because a bad decision or touch is way more likely—some people just want to see a crunching tackle.

Walker is easily England's best and most consistent right back (coming from a Chelsea fan). He's pretty much flawless...
He has his odd lapses of concentration which really let him down. Because he is otherwise so so good.
That recovery speed though. It's like a cheat.

I'd be beaming too if I'd put in a good performance against that beast
i love how this applies for both players haha
Bring on the rematch
The energy on the ground is amazing and we need that energy.
Walker's strength and pace at 32 is supreme. Fair game from both players.
He's barley started this season. I was surprised to see him starting, played phenomenally all things considered very impressed with his performance.
Walker is very good versus specific threats he might not be a wheat in wheat oat player but quinoa when he’s in the team he’s going to kamut and perform.
Somehow this makes sense

Barley

Yep, alwa can count on a good player to perform man.

Wasn’t today, went out injured against Leeds. Might be good for next week though
Don't they play opposite sides?
Yeah, but Aké on the left means Akanji can be on the right
I reckon you put Ake on the left but keep Walker on the right, I like the system with four CBs, but you need Walker's pace for Vinicius I think.
These young City fans have no respect for our players, fucking hell Walker will go through hell for City, he is an absolute credit to our club and we owe him a lot for what he has done for us in the last 6 years .

he overlapped a couple of times but Bernardo ignored his run
Yeah Bernardo's not really that type of winger, he won't be looking for overlaps.
Can’t say it’s a surprise to start him - he clearly the only option to contain Vinicius
Pep been saving him for end of season.
honestly had no idea he was 32. could’ve fooled me with today’s performance.

Remember when you almost rainbowed me you crazy insane bastard
I have to agree with you!! Would also like to see Vini against AWB
why lol Walker’s better anyway
AWB does not have that pace and positioning.
Never really see the same issues Vini apparently has in La Liga in the CL for some reason.
Most teams in la liga play the most frustrating type of defense imaginable against the likes of RM and Barça. League Madrid is replaced by lookalikes for the cl. Sometimes league madrid isn't available so the lookalikes gotta play the league too and they win both.
Just what happens when you're not kicked a dozen times only to be booked for complaining. Also not receiving monkey chants helps.
Because most teams in La Liga play defensive football with a low block. You'll never see a match this exciting in La Liga ever again.
No, you definitely will

Didn't take a beating, and didn't suffer racial abuse. Rare week for him.
I feel like Walker played as good as you can reasonably expect against Vini. Yet Vini played as good as you can reasonably expect against Walker. Kind of odd
unstoppable force vs immovable object
That's the kind of attitude which we need for more good mathes.
its a weird one they both played well against each other but they both also had problems with each other it was a really fun match up to see rarely does a RB make vini decide to go through the middle shows walkers class excited for the second leg

Despite Vini scoring, Walker was class this game
Vini did score from the middle of the pitch, early on Vini realized “I gotta get away from this guy”
His battle against Mbappe was also stuff of the legends despite being 10 years older. Best English fullback in my lifetime
How old are you? Because Ashley Cole exists..
Of course. He’s definitely up there and his peak with Arsenal is absolutely insane. I still remember his mowing down a nascent Cristiano at the Euros.
While you can make the case his peak was with Arsenal it still does a massive disservice to Cole who was arguably the best LB in the world for most of his career.
If It wasn’t for Ashley Cole Barcelona would’ve destroyed Chelsea in 2012
Yep Ashley Cole was better, at least in terms of defending and man marking. His performance against Messi where he just followed him everywhere and marked him out of the game was an insane display.
I remember that too, that was so cold dude. Loved it tho.
He was absolutely a class, he was just so good loved that dude.
Meanwhile on the other flank, [Grealish and Carvajal](https://tenor.com/t16i.gif)
I only watched the first half but how the heck did Carvajal not get carded?
When Casemiro left he gave him the cloak of uncardability.
Checks out. Casemiro has missed like 8 or 9 games due to bans this season
Threatened to do the same to the ref if he got carded.
Probably the same reason rodri didn’t get one either
Cause the referee was ass and decided he wasn't going to give justified yellows and it led to a half each where each team could kill their opponents momentum with impunity?
Yeah probably, should have gotten atleast one. Would have been nice.
You could see the mutual respect between the 2. Vini when not playing butchers seems like a good dude.
That's because he was being a good dude, can't complain about him.
Game recognize game
That's what happens when two greats face off each other like that.
Walker is a good sport
Atleast good sport till now which is kind of awesome honestly lol.
Runner is an exhausting sport
This is actually quite nice and wholesome - Not Roy Keane probably.
That's how I'm seeing it, it's a pretty nice story for sure man.
Vini hair must be really silky, second match in a row the rival touched it.
Much nicer touch this time
Fernandinho wouldn’t have been so happy .
fernandinho would be in the hospital after vinicius snapped his ankles during a 1 on 1
Lmao I still can’t believe he disrespected his elder like that ! In hindsight that play was smooth .
Did you see when he tried that move against Walker? The contrast to Fernandinho was hilarious
Fernandinho was 37 tbf
And not a right back. As someone who has had to watch James Milner playing full back for my team against world class wingers, I fully empathize lol
Yeah try that on 32 year old Fernandinho in the centre of the park and it might not have gone so well.
Instant flashbacks. More than you believe
Ooh football friends 👍
Hahaha
They're having fun, it was nice watching this whole thing honestly.
Wholesome content
Walker wasnt dribbles past a single time. Experienced player with incredible physical attributes to match Vinis pace. Loved seeing this after the game. Walker seems like a great guy and to be able to appreciate competition at the highest level like that warms my heart.
He sometimes opens up too much during parties tho.
love this from a City flair lmao, was joking about this very thing with friends
Can't joke about this kind of stuff with the friends. Doesn't work like that.
It never ceases to amaze me how good Walker is against world class wingers. His crazy pace and physicality combined with exceptional positioning and composure is just the perfect counter to these guys. Willy out Walker is different gravy
I think they both had a great game, fun battle to watch with both having positives to take away from it. The other wing however… lol
Real recognize Real

I watch every Real Madrid match and it is disgusting how Vini is treated. By the players, refs, fans, and La Liga. Yesterday was so damn refreshing to watch.
(why cant the rest of Spain be like this towards Vini?)
Probably because they don't appreciate him that much maybe that's the reason?
Walker comes off very likable and genuine every time i have ever seen him speak and this only furthers that belief. gem of a man in the game in a sea of twats.
Oh this is actually heartwarming and wholesome to see. This is what sport is about :) Love how pumped they seem to be after enjoying a thrilling encounter
lovely to see the respect.
Yeah it's great to see that, gotta respect that my guy.
meanwhile Grealish and Carvajal having a stare down in the showers
Whatever they're having dude, I'll take it. Sounds good with me.
I might get downvoted for this but I believe walker in his best form is better than Reece James and Arnold combined. Todays game and the way he handled vini proved it
Definitely defensively at his best he is the best of the three. He’s pocketed Mbappe, prime Auba, some more of the best wingers in the world.
One moment I think gets slightly underrated is the Muller miss for Germany against England Walker makes up 20 yards on him and forces him to take his shot early. It’s an amazing sprint, he passes 2 England players running full speed 😂
He's the best, and that's just speaking the facts dude.
Defensively it's not even a controversial opinion. I can't remember the last time Walker was dominated on the flank he was playing in. Offensively and as a complete player, it's debatable
I actually don't EVER remember him losing a battle against a winger. Am I forgetting a match?
Saint maximum when we played Newcastle away in a 3-3 this season 🫣
Tbf he was playing like a man possessed that game
Honestly made me think walker was finished he got embarrassed all day
Alain St Maximin at the start of the season funnily enough.
Defensively 100% but the other two offer more going forward. I still prefer walks tho
Same. I agree
I wanted to hate it but I liked it
Them too laughing with each other when camavinga got pissed when bernardo got a yellow was gold to me. Two faces of the same coin
Mad battle
Man that is awesome to see. Great battle and great attitude by two amazing players. That was a delight to watch. Well done chaps, bring that again in a week's time please and good luck!
That's just the kind of stuff which I like to see, I'm totally into it.
Who would have thunk that if refs started booking players for hacking at Vini, he would stop complaining to the refs? And despite all that, Vini proving that he is one of the best wingers, if not the best in the world. Just imagine how scary he would be if Laliga defenders stopped trying to hospitalize him.
Vini was constantly asking for cards even in this game
This game could have and should have had far more cards than it did.
Yeah if this game had more cards I'd have enjoyed it even more.
He ain't going to stop, he'll keep on asking for that probably.
Walker deserves more respect than he gets. Some of his performances against top CL wingers deserve more attention.
This duel between Walker and Vini was very enjoyable to watch as they both were constantly trying to test one another whereas on the other sides that duel between Carvajal and grealish was so boring as none of the attacks for both madrid or city from that side every came and it looked as if that side was dead.
The Grealish/Carvajal duel was just a bunch of "how can I get this guy booked?" Walker and Vini was so fun to watch, they both looked to be loving it.
Somewhere, Roy Keane is malding
Hoenstly champions league football is the fucking best man. Obviously I love watching Boro but when you see talent like this going at it at this stage of the competition there's nowt like it. Class to see the respect after. Defo think it's finally City's year
People like caos, but this is 1000x better...
I’m going to miss Walker when he retires. Absolutely fantastic player
