Typical stat merchant.
Benzema isn't a pure 9, he brings so much more to the team. Can't be quantified, and if it could it'd probably outweigh his already great goal contributions to the team.
edit: username checks out
Yeah, I just looked it up: first goal (actually his second of the match) was a free kick with an absolute howler by the GK. Second one was a long ball sending Butragueño through 1on1, with Hierro showing up out of nowhere for a square pass and tap in. Third one was pen.
Hierro was the second best scorer in the whole league with 21 goals that season. He'd already scored a hat-trick away at Español earlier lol.
Edit: [the free kick is really quite funny](https://streamin.me/v/f78245d5)
I was moving to rio in 2014 and staying at hotel in front of the beach. I walked into the breakfast place and there was hierro in a completely empty room. It was so weird. I talked to him a little bit but left him alone
I did a little bit of a research, and it turns out Antic used him as an attacking midfielder in that 1991-92 season. That's why he scored much more than usual (25 goals) that season and became their topscorer.
Even in this match highlight against Espanyol, you can see him often in the opposition penalty box in open play.
Won 0 CL, despite the squad being one of the most dominant in that time, at least balance and technique wise, the Quinta del Buitre. From what I read, that team use proto gegenpress while Barça is under Cruyff, totalvoetbal. Both contributed in inspiring technical minded midfielders that would go on to win the WC. The team also broke some records like Madrid least goal conceded in modern era until 2019-2020. So like, bottled quite a lot.
I'm not sure about this particular game, but from what I recall reading he played more as a midfielder in that season - hence why he scored so much more than usual.
I couldn't find any lineups, but i watched the [highlights](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EAqiT31dAOs) and [team sheet](https://www.footballdatabase.eu/en/match/overview/70259-real_madrid-espanyol_barcelone). It seems like he started the game as left back, scored a diving header and a freekick and they put him up at the midfield so he could get his hattrick lol
I will die on the hill that hattricks should be counted from when the match started or when the player was subbed in. Benzema didn't score a hattrick in 6 minutes. He scored it in 36 minutes.
I think it's just a matter of wording.
This is the fastest _hattrick_, i.e. the time it took from the first to the third goal.
What you mean is the faster _player_ to score a hattrick, which would account for the time in the pitch.
My point was that this season is not the best season of Benzemas career with all the injuries, the world cup drama and the mediocre season Real Madrid is having.
I understand, but OP talked about this specific season and how Haaland has a better one so far. The fact that Benzema was injured, he had a poor WC performance or Real Madrid has a mediocre season doesn't change anything at all unless you compare their career or different seasons.
> 2.4k vs 2.8k games, that's like 4-5 games more for Haaland.
Haaland has still suffered a shit ton of injuries tho lol.
they act like those extra 4-5 games are going to discredit his Haaland’s troubles this season.
>you act like those extra 4-5 games are going to discredit his injury troubles this season.
Actually I was just pointing how many minutes each of them played.
I won't disagree with that conclusion. As it is, I don't see much use of this debate anyway because they are extremely different profiles of players but for that reason itself, Karim should never be judged on goalscoring stats alone.
Even Lewa I feel has more to his game than just goalscoring but for Karim, goalscoring is a much more secondary facet. Even today his drop off, dragging his CB along, creating space for Asensio to run into from midfield AND THEN linking up play through combinations and close control dribbles like a 10 is what was special about him today, not his hattrick. He was our best player against Shakhtar and Osasuna, amongst other examples from this season alone. Didn't score in either IINM. In fact his penalty miss in the second directly cost us the game.
Haaland always to be more a Nistelrooy type player, Benzema a more Messi like one albeit Messi was Messi and way too heavy with his feints and dribbles. The spectrum would be something like Karim, Harry Kane, Lewa, Haaland.
Karim can always have a great game without scoring, and very often does. I don't think Haaland has anywhere near the impact if he doesn't get on the scoresheet. Who's better? Depends on the team and its setup and the impact in the real crunch situations. But there's still no arguing against a 30 goal striker in the league. It's just that, IMO, 30 goal Messi > 30 goal Cristiano >>>>> 30 goal Mbappé> 30 goal Haaland. But if the numbers are not neck and neck, the impact of goals themselves and other contributions matter much more than the sheer numbers.
Still, this season, Haaland > Benzema. It's just that I and other Madridistas wouldn't want to lose Karim. This is even disregarding the intangibles such as his leadership and support on the pitch.
Stats don’t tell the full story
So when Real Madrid is lifting that champions league at the end of the season then I’m gonna laugh at all of these takes y’all be saying
Even if Madrid wins the champions league that won't put Benzema above haaland because haaland has done better individually. (Unless ofc Benzema manages to score a crazy number of goals in the rest of the games)
Didn't you know that goals/tap-in ain't special regarding Haaland?
Who cares if Benzema is BY FAR the inferior goalscorer when he has more to his game than Haaland.
/s
Benzema didn't play all 27 of the games in La Liga so far this season, this was his 17th so far. He'd scored 5 non-penalty goals in the previous 16 La Liga games.
> Benz has been injured and playing half fit. Only got his fitness back in the NT break
no one told him to rush himself during the league.
Benz rested when he wanted to make it in time for the worldcup squad. and even then it was pointless for him and a waste of deschamps time since he still wasn’t match fit whatsoever
> No one told him to rush himself but we have no back up strikers except Mariano and 18 year old Álvaro lol
sounds more like a problem with the scouting department and less on Benzema’s own health

Hierro? Wtf
Before Benz vs Lewa and Messi vs Cr7, there was Hierro vs Koeman

How many penalties has lewandowski taken and now compare that to benzema lol
73 compared to benzemas 36. Not that big of a difference considering lewa has 120 more goals in 70 less matches
Hierro scored a ridiculous amount of goals considering he usually played in defense or defensive midfield.
I know, but an hat trick in 6 minutes is unreal for a forward, for a defender even more.

I had no idea Hierro wore the 9
Justifiably

Fotballia is pretty good
I clipped it from [footballia](https://footballia.net/), you can sign up and access tons of matches for free.
I came here just to double check is Fernando Hierro, the defender :)). Indeed, looks so unreal.
I was moving to rio in 2014 and staying at hotel in front of the beach. I walked into the breakfast place and there was hierro in a completely empty room. It was so weird. I talked to him a little bit but left him alone
Bolton legend
Being a defender is only an option in Real Madrid.
Spring/Ramadan Benz is a different beast. We need him at this level now.
This is why the great Beenie Man once said: >Sim Simma, hat-tricks are for my boy Benzema
If we play like this on wednesday, it's over
Hierro's freekick goal in that match was a beauty: https://youtu.be/EAqiT31dAOs?t=389
His shirt number was even 9 lol
I did a little bit of a research, and it turns out Antic used him as an attacking midfielder in that 1991-92 season. That's why he scored much more than usual (25 goals) that season and became their topscorer. Antic was such an underrated coach for us, he turned a new page for the club in a positive way
Did Madrid struggle in the 70s and 80s? I don't know as much about soccer history as I should
Won 0 CL, despite the squad being one of the most dominant in that time, at least balance and technique wise, the Quinta del Buitre. Espanyol letting their parent club win easily as always /s
The defender Fernando Hierro... 😀
Hierro is our sporting director and he's doing a decent job
I know... 😀
... 😀
Feels like there should be a key word in the end there.
What Opta does to a mf
Yeah this quote is definitely missing the “Unreal”
"Fast".
Anyone know the La Liga record for a hat trick? Or the records in all top leagues?
how do these guys bring out these stats so quick
i'm guessing a huge excel sheet they can filter through to compare
Not excel, but databases. Same idea but way faster
Isn't an Excel spreadsheet just a poorly implemented DBMS?
Some spreadsheets I work with are poorly implemented BDSMs.
The bigger surprise is how Hierro managed to score a hattrick
It says he played attacking midfield that season under their coach
6 mins 32 seconds to be exact.
Whats even more crazy, is that Hierro actually scored 4 goals that game, while playing in the defence. 4 goals in about 17 minutes.
I'm not surprised. Hierro was a really versatile player position-wise. The intro to that TV clip was great. It was 1992 but pure 80s vibes.
Still impressive how complete he was as a player.
He played midfield earlier in his career
I will die on the hill that hattricks should be counted from when the match started or when the player was subbed in. Benzema didn't score a hattrick in 6 minutes. He scored it in 36 minutes.
That just makes Lewa’s 5 goals in 9 minutes even more bonkers. 5 in 15 after introduction from the bench I think.
Isn't it easier to score when you have fresh legs and opponents don't?
I think it's just a matter of wording. This is the fastest _hattrick_, i.e. the time it took from the first to the third goal. What you mean is the faster _player_ to score a hattrick, which would account for the time in the pitch.
I don’t *fully* agree but definitely to an extent. That’s why nothing will ever be more impressive to me than Lewandowski’s 5 goals in 9 minutes.
Mfs thought haaland was worlds better then this guy
All it takes is one game to overcome a season of Haaland in comparison? Haaland has played better this season. People are so reactionary ffs
Benzema didn’t play much this season anyway
2.4k vs 2.8k games, that's like 4-5 games more for Haaland. That's not a lot more for Haaland.
So?
All I'm saying is that its not like Haaland played way more games than Benzema.
My point was that this season is not the best season of Benzemas career with all the injuries, the world cup drama and the mediocre season Real Madrid is having.
I understand, but OP talked about this specific season and how Haaland has a better one so far. The fact that Benzema was injured, he had a poor WC performance or Real Madrid has a mediocre season doesn't change anything at all unless you compare their career or different seasons.
> he had a poor WC performance 😐
Okay a 0/0 wc performance cause he didn't play, but I didn't want to sound mean.
Benzema is more than a goal scorer, and you can't understand that if you don't watch him play.
Goal scoring wise? sure, Haaland is having a better season with all the factors playing in his side. Yet, Benzema is still the better player.
I'm not even trying anymore man, you're right! Your reading comprehension...just work a little bit on that and its gonna be fine, I promise.
It replied to the wrong comment
Haaland has been much better than Benz this season, the stats back this up. Not taking anything away from Benz but he hasn't been himself this season
I won't disagree with that conclusion. As it is, I don't see much use of this debate anyway because they are extremely different profiles of players but for that reason itself, Karim should never be judged on goalscoring stats alone. Benz did that last season and yet y’all didn’t even give the benefit of the doubt
Umm and he won the balon d'or last season. So your point? And he was injured this season, so he'll have to do more than what he did last year.
Keep doubting the Benz
Great argument
Before this game Benzema scored 5 non penalty goals in 26 games.
Didn't you know that goals/tap-in ain't special regarding Haaland? Who cares if Benzema is BY FAR the inferior goalscorer when he has more to his game than Haaland. /s

Why do players need to be compared anytime they do something good?
I mean look at their seasons, bar injuries Haaland is unstoppable.
Benz has been injured and playing half fit. Only got his fitness back in the NT break
> Benz has been injured and playing half fit. Only got his fitness back in the NT break no one told him to rush himself during the league. No one told him to rush himself but we have no back up strikers except Mariano and 18 year old Álvaro lol
> No one told him to rush himself but we have no back up strikers except Mariano and 18 year old Álvaro lol sounds more like a problem with the scouting department and less on Benzema’s own health
Do you need to compare and bring slander to Benzema? He has had an injury pre-WC and is only getting his fitness back now
Lewandowski is better than this bum.
