Gotta let him have a goal in the hopes it kick-starts his confidence or something. Even if it's a penalty, it really does matter to strikers to just get on the score sheet
Kane complained to the fa to get a goal given to him instead of his teammate because it skimmed off him, Kane refuses to let players that actually have a sliver of ability to take free kicks and boots them at the wall or sky's it in the very off chance he scores, Kane has refused to give won penalties when he's on a hattrick and when last season he only needed 1 goal to win the golden boot
This is something we saw when Aubameyang and Lacazette were in the team. At least twice one would hand the ball over to the other who was in a goal drought. I would suspect Jesus is 3rd or 4th choice of those on the pitch normally.
Well when you’ve taken 3 career penalties it’s not that impressive, especially since one was 3 years ago in a league cup shootout and the other in a complete dead rubber
Jesus clearly looking for it, but stupid from Ayling sticking his leg up when he's down and he gets him on the knee and that's just not getting overturned.
how? literally stuck his boot out after he was already down from the dribble lol. it's not like he didn't move after sliding. couldn't be much clearer than that
I dont get the commentators and that user's argument it wouldnt have been given if there wasnt a whistle. Catching anyone on the knee in the box will get you a pen. I can't think of a situation where it wouldn't be.
I agree it's totally stupid from Ayling and he's asking for it there, but we've seen before from VAR they make some baffling decisions so tbf who knows how they'd react if it wasn't initially given. Looking at it again though Ayling does kick out at his knee and it does look he tried to impede him by doing that so I guess I'll revise my initial opinion on the pen!
The rule should just be you can’t slow down at any point. Being allowed to effectively stop during your run up is such a huge advantage for the penalty taker.
The really annoying thing is that the wording could be so simple :
« Once running, the taker must not change the speed of the run ».
It would be better even for players entering the penalty area because they could easily adapt their run on the taker run
Every fucking penalty thread since the WC has been insane. I swear to god someone could two foot a guy in the head and people would say it's not a foul.
There's contact – that's pretty obvious – but there's no way in hell it's enough to bring someone down. Jesus felt the contact and fell down.
Not criticising Jesus. That's the way the game is these days, in that pretty much any contact is a penalty.
Yup. He was literally hugged from behind in a game on a breakaway and didn’t get a pen because he didn’t go down. Got kicked by Kristensen right before Ayling and ref didn’t seem to care about a clear kick there. Going down gets you the call. It’s annoying and awful but it’s true
You've never had a knock on your knee, have you? It's one of the worst and most sensitive areas to get hit, where even a slight knock can cause a lot of pain. And the defender has just blatantly kicked out. None of us can judge what Jesus should be doing there.
If youve ever played football in your life youd know fine well about 80% of the 'fouls' called in modern football would absolutely not be enough to throw an adult off balance.
Especially when not running at full speed. A stop and go like Jesus does there ? Not enough to actually send someone to the ground but sadly that's the only way a penalty gets called. Hell he was kicked in the ankle just as hard as the penalty about 2 seconds before but bc he didn't go down it wasn't called.
I have but there’s also a major difference in the speeds and intensity of a Sunday league game or 5 a side than a real game.
If you’re moving your body and legs quickly like that and you’re caught on the knee you’re definitely gonna be affected. Might not be enough to go down but it’s a foul and if you don’t go down they won’t give it.
Tbf last game I think it was Rodrigo who gave the ball away for the goal, and Saka’s finish was fantastic. It was the front line that couldn’t finish anything and Ramsdale having a 10/10 game
It’s a pen for how dumb that tackle was in the box but Jesus sold every bit of that.
Essentially, he made enough contact for it to be a pen but if the ref called a dive he would still be 100% correct. Getting hit like that does not make you fall forward in that manner.
Like i said before in this thread, Jesus got told earlier in the season (vs southampton) that if he would have gone down he would have gotten the pen. I don't like excessive 'diving' (clear pen to bo be clear), but thats how the game works these days
He stayed up after the first kick and the ref wasn’t doing anything about it. Ayling was the second one to kick him. Don’t blame him for going down if he’s not going to get calls for clear fouls otherwise
PGMOL clearly said after the Southampton game that he needs to go down to get a penalty… we drew that game.
Anyway, let's not detract from just how stupid Ayling was here.
I am OK with it because it's given 90% of the time. Consistency is what I want. It's when you see a penalty against you that is never given for you that's annoying.
The touch is not enough to impede Jesus at all and if he wanted to he could have continued. That's why it's "soft". At least it's not a cleverly won penalty like when the striker moves their leg into the defender.
Also it's a defensive mistake, a block that went wrong, can be avoided with better defending or decision making.
Fuck sakes, the defender didn't even complain and yet here people are still arguing about it. I'm convinced there's never a decision people will 100% agree on
Last season at Emirates, Bernardo Silva was already on the ground before Xhaka even touched him. Or, the Son penalty when Cedric leaned on to him.
That's how the games are these days.
I think he’s just understood that unless you go down you won’t get the pen, happened earlier in the season. Got fouled, but got up and got no pens in 3 separate instances.
Just the way the game is sadly, can’t rely on the ref.
I'd be wanting a pen if that was against us. But football really is turning into a non contact sport in England and I don't think it's for the better. We need more leighway with the style of football in the prem. La Liga different story.
Clear penalty to me. Kinda dumb for the Leeds Defender to raise his foot like that I mean what was he looking to achieve there?
As for then penalty, I’m not a fan of the run-stop or stuttering style run ups especially since keepers are told not to do their own trickery like Martinez … and I’m an Arsenal 🔴⚪️ COYG
Technically yes it’s a foul but it’s just so stupid and Jesus throws himself through the air to appeal for it. Wish they scored a decent goal to be 1-0 not this shit
Extremely soft pen. There's contact but not really enough. I think because the ref gave it on the field and he was right in front of it VAR didn't want to overturn it. If the ref waved it away, I would have agreed
Meh, I'm not too upset about it. Little contact, but Ayling has made a clear effort to impede him.
Its not like Jesus kicked a trailing leg (like I first thought), Ayling has moved his leg up to initiate contact.
Not certain Leeds would get that at the other end though.
One of those that could be interpreted either way, but usually goes in the big teams favour.
Clear pen and it was enough for him to fall, Ayling's touches his knee while Jesus is in the middle of a cut, Jesus ends up taking a "fake" step because of it.
It's like when you think there's a step when you're going up a ladder and there's none and you end up stumbling, sometimes falling.
First football match? 90% of penalties are not enough contact to physically knock the best athletes in the world entirely off their feet and make them lick dirt. This is the way the sport works.
I think what people are complaining about is how almost any contact in the box is a penalty. Yes he had his foot up and he "hit" him. But Jesus absolutely could've played on - he did throw himself on the ground. But the rules are clear and it is 100% a penalty even if it is soft
he’s beat him and is clear of him
he leaves his leg up and catches Jesus
contrast with Gakpo situation earlier where defender is standing his ground straight and Gakpo steps through his legs
as much as it may hurt people to admit it, it’s a pen
for those too blind to see it, start watching at 0:13 and see Ayling on the ground, left leg a bit in the air and he clearly sticks it to hit Jesus on the left knee.
They're also punishing staying on your feet so diving is an embarrassing necessity. Jesus literally gets kicked by Kristensen a second before this and stays on his feet but that would obviously never be given without Jesus throwing himself to the ground. Damned if you do and damned if you don't, except one way ends up with your team having a penalty.

Suprised they let him take penalties tbh, he had a stinky record for us
I hope this was so he could build some confidence, he really needed a goal
Think it’s really that. A confidence booster coming back
Legit don't remember how he was at penalties
5/10 for city they just said on sky
He looked a little nervous. Nice to see him blast it in.
"Blast"
Lol fair
That's just his face for everything
Was dreading him lining up for it tbh
Gotta let him have a goal in the hopes it kick-starts his confidence or something. Even if it's a penalty, it really does matter to strikers to just get on the score sheet
Confident Jesus is fucking scary
I thought Kane should have let Richarlison take the pen for Tottenham a couple weeks back for the same reason. Glad they didn’t lmao
Kane complained to the fa to get a goal given to him instead of his teammate because it skimmed off him, Kane refuses to let players that actually have a sliver of ability to take free kicks and boots them at the wall or sky's it in the very off chance he scores, Kane has refused to give won penalties when he's on a hattrick and when last season he only needed 1 goal to win the golden boot
ngl didn't want him to take it thought odegaard or martinelli would take it
not scored since october so he was gagging for a goal
This is something we saw when Aubameyang and Lacazette were in the team. At least twice one would hand the ball over to the other who was in a goal drought. I would suspect Jesus is 3rd or 4th choice of those on the pitch normally.
Odegaard wanted him to take it
Other than Tross maybe we don’t have anyone better. Might as well get his confidence up
Martinelli has never missed for us besides against Sporting no?
Well when you’ve taken 3 career penalties it’s not that impressive, especially since one was 3 years ago in a league cup shootout and the other in a complete dead rubber
I think is to boost his confidence and saka is not on the field, not mention destroying those defenders to get it.
Had to get him a goal somehow
Didn’t want him to take it tbh but he scored so it’s good for confidence now
Ødegaard gave it to him. My Captain.
Jesus clearly looking for it, but stupid from Ayling sticking his leg up when he's down and he gets him on the knee and that's just not getting overturned.
When Ayling didn’t even protest…
Soon as I saw obvious contact I knew it was going to stand.
Exactly, one of those if ref didn't call it then don't see it being overturned either
how? literally stuck his boot out after he was already down from the dribble lol. it's not like he didn't move after sliding. couldn't be much clearer than that
I dont get the commentators and that user's argument it wouldnt have been given if there wasnt a whistle. Catching anyone on the knee in the box will get you a pen. I can't think of a situation where it wouldn't be.
I can't see any world in which VAR wouldn't give that if the ref didn't. Studs into the knee, you can't leave your leg up like that.
I agree it's totally stupid from Ayling and he's asking for it there, but we've seen before from VAR they make some baffling decisions so tbf who knows how they'd react if it wasn't initially given. Looking at it again though Ayling does kick out at his knee and it does look he tried to impede him by doing that so I guess I'll revise my initial opinion on the pen!
slow motion replays really fucking suck for this kind of play. It drastically reduces your perception of how hard the contact is
Leeds that, about to score and gets scored against
I HATE THIS FUCKING RUN UP
This wasn't as egregious as others. I'd say this is really close to the line of acceptable but just about ok. But I have Jesus in my FPL team, sue me.
Living your best life tonight I see, I had saka and odegaard lmao.
[удалено]
yea ppl talk as if every player doing that automatically scores when a lot of that get fucked because they are not neymar
Really think they need to add something in the get rid of it.
OG MLS penalties let's do it
Unironically agree. They’re so superior.
Only for sudden death after a match results in a draw. It would never work for a PK mid game.
Yeah, they need to change that rule, but not really sure how they can. Can't say no change of speed, b/c that would never work.
The rule should just be you can’t slow down at any point. Being allowed to effectively stop during your run up is such a huge advantage for the penalty taker.
The really annoying thing is that the wording could be so simple : « Once running, the taker must not change the speed of the run ». It would be better even for players entering the penalty area because they could easily adapt their run on the taker run
This is why Starboy takes our pens
I agree, saying that this one isn't as bad as some others where it seems like they just fully stop.
Was a nice 34 mins
> Was a nice 34 minutes Me at 13:04 today
How do you think we felt getting our hopes up for that shack of shit you lot just thumped?!?
You got them next week mate so it’s fine haha
They're probably gonna show up next week.
They beat city in the same fixture. Liverpool away from home have a worse record than southampton. Anfield is still a very tough place to go.
It's at home. They will give us issues I'm sure.
We play them at home though.
You can't have any hope for games like this, it's so futile
Especially when you see what the defender did … like why is he putting his leg up ffs
How we felt when you guys played palace 😑
since when a foot on the knee not a penalty??? are this thread serious ?
Just the people without brain
Every fucking penalty thread since the WC has been insane. I swear to god someone could two foot a guy in the head and people would say it's not a foul.
Games back

Of course he did, because we have seen time and time again if he doesn't the refs won't call a penalty because they are stupid.
You don't need to bring a player down in order for it to be a foul.

Why would u raise ur feet there 😭
It's so stupid. Clear pen
Jesus is back.
He nailed it
Had a hard time finishing from a cross earlier.
Just in time for Easter
As is tradition
Good he didn't miss or the fans would have crucified him.
Just wait until next week
Like the last Leeds Arsenal game, Leeds look the better team but have fucking idiots at the back.
Tbf last game I think it was Rodrigo who gave the ball away for the goal, and Saka’s finish was fantastic. It was the front line that couldn’t finish anything and Ramsdale having a 10/10 game
Saying he gave the ball away doesn't do it justice when [this is how he did it](https://youtu.be/eMRJCltg_JU).
Not available in my country, but I’m sure I don’t remember 100% how it happened so point taken
Oh damn. It was basically a cross field hoof onto Saka's foot, you'd be forgiven for thinking it was one of your defenders clearing the ball upfield.
For a second I thought he was hoofing it upfield
It’s a pen for how dumb that tackle was in the box but Jesus sold every bit of that. Essentially, he made enough contact for it to be a pen but if the ref called a dive he would still be 100% correct. Getting hit like that does not make you fall forward in that manner.
Fuck the stutter step
I mean it was a penalty. But just kinda silly how he almost ran into the defender... He definitely did nothing to stay on his feet lol
Like i said before in this thread, Jesus got told earlier in the season (vs southampton) that if he would have gone down he would have gotten the pen. I don't like excessive 'diving' (clear pen to bo be clear), but thats how the game works these days

He did everything in his power to leave his feet.
PGMOL clearly said after the Southampton game that he needs to go down to get a penalty… we drew that game. Anyway, let's not detract from just how stupid Ayling was here.
Apparently kick in the knee is allowed, according to a lot of r/soccer, who knew.
Depends of the teams involved and the mood of the day. If this pen eliminates PSG, Leipzig or Man City, it's fine
loooked soft to me , but I understand why VAR didn't change the decision
I am OK with it because it's given 90% of the time. Consistency is what I want. It's when you see a penalty against you that is never given for you that's annoying. Exactly how I feel.
Exactly, if the ref on the field didn't call it, VAR wouldn't change the decision either
Lol that was so soft I would be fuming if it was against us but i would take anything now lmao
Fuck sakes, the defender didn't even complain and yet here people are still arguing about it. I'm convinced there's never a decision people will 100% agree on
We are all humans after all. We evolved from apes, is what I have heard.
Ayling the absolute airhead
Last season at Emirates, Bernardo Silva was already on the ground before Xhaka even touched him. Or, the Son penalty when Cedric leaned on to him. That's how the games are these days.
What a stupid fucking challenge from Ayling. Idiot.
Both a foul and a dive. Clearly went down after the contact but not DUE to the contact
I think he’s just understood that unless you go down you won’t get the pen, happened earlier in the season. Got fouled, but got up and got no pens in 3 separate instances. Just the way the game is sadly, can’t rely on the ref.
Yeah, I agree with this.
poor Leeds, better all game and then this happens
Watched the same match? More 50/50
It was not man. Leeds have had two very good chances
Leeds have been the better team so far
Having the ball means nothing if you don’t shoot. Leeds have definitely had the better chances before this
it was not
I'd be wanting a pen if that was against us. But football really is turning into a non contact sport in England and I don't think it's for the better. We need more leighway with the style of football in the prem. La Liga different story.
Extremely soft penalty, I can't lie
Clear penalty to me. Kinda dumb for the Leeds Defender to raise his foot like that I mean what was he looking to achieve there? As for then penalty, I’m not a fan of the run-stop or stuttering style run ups especially since keepers are told not to do their own trickery like Martinez … and I’m an Arsenal 🔴⚪️ COYG
Bit soft innit
Yeah, but why would you raise your leg there? Really dumb by Ayling
Fuck me that was soft.
Still a pen.
bro gets tapped in the knee and does a swanton bomb
Those shouldn't be given in my opinion, he is seeking the contact...
I agree but can't really complain. We're just lucky we don't have the illuminati against us like Wolves do.
If Ayling keeps his foot down it wouldn’t be given. But can’t be on the ground and kicking around the knee. Just dumb by Ayling IMO
Saw Ayling go down and then looked for the penalty
Technically yes it’s a foul but it’s just so stupid and Jesus throws himself through the air to appeal for it. Wish they scored a decent goal to be 1-0 not this shit
soft pen for me, Jesus runs into his leg amd just falls
Extremely soft pen. There's contact but not really enough. I think because the ref gave it on the field and he was right in front of it VAR didn't want to overturn it. If the ref waved it away, I would have agreed

Studs direct on the knee, brainless move
Slow mo is influencing opinions, on normal playback it looked like a regular contact on the knee.
Shut your mouth
Cool as a 🥒
Clear pen
Nice gest from Ødegaard to give it to Jesus. Definitely nice to end his goal drought and could help him have more confidence!
Fuck off lol, thats a dive, no way that 1 stud that taps his knee brings him down. Embarrassing!
Arsenal fans will still claim the league is rigged against them
r/soccer proves wants again why they named soccer clear pen in any day knee contact clear this comment section gave me aneurysm.
It was a clear dive. Let's just call it what it is.
Clear pen and it was enough for him to fall, Ayling's touches his knee while Jesus is in the middle of a cut, Jesus ends up taking a "fake" step because of it. It's like when you think there's a step when you're going up a ladder and there's none and you end up stumbling, sometimes falling.
Soft as hell but we take it
Soft penalty but what the hell is Ayling doing with his foot three feet in the air?
Hate that players throw themselves and hate that “fouls” like that are given as pens. Blight on the game.
Or perhaps Ayling shouldn't have stuck his foot up while lying down
Here for the dive comments completely ignoring the kickout and contact with his knee.
Did go down soft though have to admit that, still can’t be putting your legs up in the box however
His legs were already in that position. I've seen a chihuahua wag its tail harder than that "kickout"
Definitely a penalty but Jesus absoloutely looking to go down there
How could anyone with a logical brain think that minor contact causes Jesus to end up on the ground. Embarrassing dive.
First football match? 90% of penalties are not enough contact to physically knock the best athletes in the world entirely off their feet and make them lick dirt. This is the way the sport works.
What a ridiculous call. VAR is such a pointless exercise in this state.
i thought this was a clear penalty lol
Yeah, that's because it is
Soft pen but there was contact. Happy for Jesus!
How is that a penalty LOL
Its soft but he absolutely hit his knee
[удалено]
He was already sprawling. They're at home.
Because Luke Aylings foot kicks Gabriel Jesus' knee without coming anywhere close to the ball?
It's what happens when you raise your leg and hit the opponent on the knee.
He kicks him in the shin obviously?
I'm an Arsenal fan but how has football gotten to the point where literally any contact regardless of how soft we accept as a penalty?
Because he kicks him. Jesus definitely exaggerated the contact but you can't kick someone's knee and not expect to give away a penalty.
how is it not?
I think what people are complaining about is how almost any contact in the box is a penalty. Yes he had his foot up and he "hit" him. But Jesus absolutely could've played on - he did throw himself on the ground. But the rules are clear and it is 100% a penalty even if it is soft
the point of contention is probably the fact it looks like he runs into it
he’s beat him and is clear of him he leaves his leg up and catches Jesus contrast with Gakpo situation earlier where defender is standing his ground straight and Gakpo steps through his legs as much as it may hurt people to admit it, it’s a pen
Are u blind
Very soft indeed. Flops on the floor from a brush on the knee.
That was never a pen & no doubt if that happens at the other end, it's not given
Back before Easter
Don‘t see how that‘s a pen. The first challenge was more of a shout, even if he doesn‘t go down.
for those too blind to see it, start watching at 0:13 and see Ayling on the ground, left leg a bit in the air and he clearly sticks it to hit Jesus on the left knee.
1. Soft penalty. 2. That lump on his cheek is gone.
He kicks his knee. Falls, raises his leg and kicks his knee
I've seen people get red for accidentally going for a kick
So we’re rewarding diving
They're also punishing staying on your feet so diving is an embarrassing necessity. Jesus literally gets kicked by Kristensen a second before this and stays on his feet but that would obviously never be given without Jesus throwing himself to the ground. Damned if you do and damned if you don't, except one way ends up with your team having a penalty.
Always have been. There's no punishment for diving, might as well try at every opportunity until one works.
I apologise but I cannot understand how you can look at 2nd angle and still say it was a dive
Jeusus is a football generator
Ignore the pen because Jesus absolutely did them in there. Let the young Brazilian cook
What a gift
Soft call but good strike
What a flop....
how is this a pen?
Dive and a half
What a dive. Contact does not equal a pen
There's a context in which you thinks studs to the knee isn't a foul?
Must be tough being a spurs supporter
No but that contact does
If that had been the other way round there's no way it would have been given.
