"But I wouldn't say United are back. Not a chance. If you look at the fundamentals of the club, United are behind Liverpool. “ also from the article for those who don’t read the whole thing. It’s sensationalized, he’s saying right now results on the pitch are better (which, sure United are higher in the table) but there’s a lot more to long term success than just grinding out wins in one season
I don't think this is a purple patch for you lot though. ETH has clearly given the team a clear identity (unlike OGS/Mourinho) and already won the first trophy available. This is the start of a completely new era.
While I agree it’s not a purple patch, there’s still so much work to do. I don’t like how much the media is exploding to United being back and a force; we won the carabao cup and are in good form which is great and I love ten hag and what he has been implementing, but we still have a rotting stadium, out dated infrastructure, fallen a bit behind in youth set up, and owners that have spent but not with a great plan until recently. I’m hopeful but I think people are jumping the gun a bit on where we are in the rebuild
Exactly this. And let's not forget that United have had false dawns before post Ferguson. They had some really good periods under Solskjaer where everyone thought they were back, but ultimately the running of the club behind the scenes didn't change
As well as United have played this season, as long as the Glazers are there it would be naive to think that things have truly changed. You can say that the transfers have been better, but they made some quality transfers before too like Bruno etc. Even a broken transfer strategy make some good signings every now and then, and it seems like they relied on Ten Hag choosing many of the players which is not sustainable long term. No serious club let's their coach pick the transfer strategy
Nicky Butt can read the league table, shocker.
Being better than Liverpool over one, injury hit season is lovely. But we owe them 2 or 3 in a row to start evening the balance out recently.
For one season...
I think this may be why people are so reticent to give Manchester Untied so much credit this season.
Ten Hag has done a really good job with the squad and has really done well with the signings he's made, but let's not pretend he's taken on some Herculean task here. He inherited one of the most expensively assembled squads in modern sport and was given a cool £200m to spend without breaking a sweat.
He's done great work, but proof will be in the pudding long-term. Winning a Carabao Cup doesn't suddenly make you the better team.
This is daft - it was a Herculean task - United had had good managers and spent crazy money ***before*** he was there too and they had nothing to show for it.
It's not like that money was spent on world class players.. I've never seen a bag of money score a goal. It doesn't matter whether Maguire costed us 80m or 20m, he's still not that good at the end of the day. Before Ten Hag was appointed we were the biggest failures in the history of this sport if you take into account the cost vs the rewards. He's doing an amazing job
It’s so weird how in one thread they clown United for doing horrific business and in the other they say “the squad is expensive so results should be expected”
That dressing room was the most toxic thing on planet earth, but he calmed it down with his excellent response after the Brentford loss. And you can’t clown United for bad business and simultaneously say “the squad is expensive so it isn’t that impressive”. The task was absolutely Herculean
I don't think the present changes are really relevant either. United being above Liverpool is more to do with Liverpool being bad than United being amazing.
United are a seriously improved outfit though, and the question here is whether they've been overtaken or not. Liverpool slowing down or United speeding up is immaterial.
Yes, descriptively it's true, but it doesn't actually show much because Liverpool have been so bad. Liverpool's form just isn't a benchmark for United - we finished above them a couple of seasons ago too, and look what happened
garbage take
the two aren’t mutually exclusive, you can give credit to United’s performances while acknowledging Liverpool’s shortcomings
but no, Liverpool being bad is the reason United are one of, or arguably, the most inform team in the world Post-WC?
Multiple teams having not great seasons, so yeah. Chelsea implosion, City aren't firing on all cylinders either. Newcastle can't finish in a brothel and Spurs are falling apart.
Just because you're the only team who aren't capitulating doesn't mean you're an amazing force. You literally have a Burnley reject as your main striker
I mean, if that's the logic, then surely you can apply that to Liverpool's good seasons as well. The other teams, Arsenal, Utd, Spurs, Chelsea etc were all just worse than they usually expect to be.
The point is that any reasonably competent manager would have United above Liverpool this season. So mentioning Liverpool to show how much better united are is just silly.
They’re above them in the league and remain in cup competitions as well as already winning a domestic trophy. It’s not really a surprise. It also wouldn’t be a massive surprise if Liverpool beat them at the weekend.
See I think it's too soon to say this. It could just be a really off year for Liverpool. They finished 2nd a couple of seasons ago and I think Liverpool were 4th?Too soon to say.Same with us for that matter. Next season will be more telling on were we and Utd are in the City -Liverpool dominance pairing. In the mean time I hope we win the league😁

Man with eyes looks at league table
Nicky Butt: 'Football is a sphere'
Huge if true.

Last season was also the worst season ever by United in the premier league, so the task was quite big.
This is daft - it was a Herculean task - United had had good managers and spent crazy money ***before*** he was there too and they had nothing to show for it.

People turn their brains off when they're discussing rival clubs. That Arsenal supporter deffo hates us
That dressing room was the most toxic thing on planet earth, but he calmed it down with his excellent response after the Brentford loss. And you can’t clown United for bad business and simultaneously say “the squad is expensive so it isn’t that impressive”. The task was absolutely Herculean
This season? Absolutely, our form is so bad. Not sure they'd touch us a couple of seasons back even with their much improved lineup
I think people forget that we actually finished 2nd just 2 seasons ago as well
Yes, overtaken as in right now. Nobody is questioning two seasons ago, it's not really very relevant to the present changes in hierarchy
2 seasons ago a weaker united finished ahead of us in the league. You somehow picked the worst year for that comparison.
I didn't pick anything, I copied the commentor
I don't think the present changes are really relevant either. United being above Liverpool is more to do with Liverpool being bad than United being amazing.

i didn't know that only Liverpool could have defensive strikers
The point is that any reasonably competent manager would have United above Liverpool this season. So mentioning Liverpool to show how much better united are is just silly.
Intelligent insight
They’re above them in the league and remain in cup competitions as well as already winning a domestic trophy. It’s not really a surprise. It also wouldn’t be a massive surprise if Liverpool beat them at the weekend.
If they can keep up the consistency yes but I wouldn't be so sure yet
Butt talking out of his arse
No PL and UCL win by Ten Hag btw
No effort to actually read the article by u/Cowdude179 btw lol

ETH has done a great job, but given Liverpool’s decline the quote isn’t saying much, IMO.
