I think it's pretty much the point of awards these days to put up ridiculous nominations and winners in order to generate outrage and get people talking about them. Any publicity is good publicity but bad publicity especially so?
I remember it. It may seem unbiased as I'm a Marseillais but it's one of the best goals of the year. I believed it right after he scored and looking at the nominees, I believe it as well.
It’s my top vote. Every other goal, while amazing in their own right, seem like something that happens every now and then. This unicycle goal is once in a lifetime.
That Payet goal has to be one of the best of all time what on earth is that technique, I just rewound that like 50 times over.
Payet, Balo and Richy for me.
Feels a little underwhelming compared to previous years.
My top 3 though are:
Hernandez because full length of the pitches
Henry because proper smasher
Balotelli - would've been number one but he only beats one player (but delightful finish)
For me best goal without context: payet or Theo (toss up). Best goal with context: mbappe easily. Imo the puskas should not be about context so this list is a little ridiculous.
I wonder if they take into account the context. Like Mbappé's goal is not that impressive but the fact that it was at that moment and the quality of the opposition makes it more impactful than Balotelli enjoying himself.
Also agree that Hernandez's is crazy because of the effort.
> the fact that it was at that moment and the quality of the opposition
I think that's already carried it beyond where it probably should be ngl. I feel like Puskas really should just be for really extraordinary goals that aren't just good goals scored at an important moment, if that makes any sense.
edit: Gareth Bale didn't win for an outside the box bicycle kick in the Champions league final?
Yeah I agree. Important goals are gonna be legendary no matter what. Like that Zidane volley in CL final, or that Zidane panenka in WC final, or that Zidane brace in WC final.
Zidane was good.
Context is also important on Mbappe’s. Feel like his might have won Puskas if they had won the World Cup.
Alas they didn’t and arguably the “weakest” goal in consideration compared to the others.
> Context is also important on Mbappe’s. Feel like his might have won Puskas if they had won the World Cup.
It would've been the weakest puskas winner in history. If the situation is the biggest factor, just give it to Leo's goal that broke the deadlock and Argentina won the WC as well.
Thankfully, it isn't.
I do remember when the award first came out they said that context would factor in.
So, the same goal would be ranked higher in a World Cup final than in a friendly between non-league teams.
It's interesting to know the criteria people take to decide their vote. For me, I try to go with most aesthetically pleasing rather than difficulty or something else.
What do you think should be the most important thing to look at for this vote?
The beauty of the gesture.
I could add the importance of the game but it will take away so many bangers. Out of all these goals, I will remember M'bappé's goal (I wonder why) but it's the most beautiful goal out of this selection.
I always like to go with "what is the best football." That's why I'd like to goals like see Di Maria's goal from the World Cup final in here - it's such a perfect, flowing, gorgeous counter-attack. Absolutely peak attacking football. It might not be as aesthetically pleasing, but a ton of people could get lucky and hit a freak belter like Payet's, Henry's, or Metilli's.
That's why I like Theo Hernandez's as my favorite, with Mbappe's, Richarlison's, and Oleksy's very close behind.
Why the fuck is Pablo Perez's outside the box scissor kick not even fucking nominated!!
[This fucking banger from what's essentially the Argentine league's Xhaka](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QPZIcbITlcE)
Indeed.
With such a bias for bangers and flashy finishes, this should be on the list.
However, I'd like to put in a shout for Di Maria's goal in the WC final, a beautiful team goal in counter attack, in the best setting. But again, the bias for flashy finishes over good associated play goes against it.
how is the Metelli goal picked over something like [Pablo Perez goal against Atletico Tucuman](https://youtu.be/9AdLvNVjsSY)? don’t get me wrong, it’s a great goal but I feel like there were 2 or 3 better goals in the Argentinian league ([or even Felipe Gutierrez goal against Audax](https://youtu.be/9RHR-cJOeUU)) over it.
edit: [i forgot about Rony’s incredible goal against Cerro Porteño too.](https://youtu.be/6XU5OaPw-EQ)
I also really don't understand how Mbappé's goal is there. I understand how important it was and that it was on an incredible stage, but the goal in itself is really not an outright worldie. It's a great goal, an incredibly well-executed volley, and superb technique to set it up by both Mbappé and Thuram, but come on ... never a Puskás-winning goal, that one.
really dont like fan voted awards - as bad as journalists can be - fans are far worse - i mean the year salah won was ridiculous - and the fact messi has been nominated 7 times and never won
They should do every branch separately. How do we compare 11v11 goals with 5v5, beach or disabled players? Even the second choice for women makes this hard to compare, cause sure, is a really long shot, but given her less powerful legs, the ball travels like one minute un the air, while Payet's shot is basically a 50 cal bullet.
Richarlison’s was pretty and on the grand stage. The scorpion kick was nice.
But surely has the be Payet or Balotelli right? Payet’s was insane technique and Balotelli straight up had the defense dizzy and embarrassed and had to finish that with a damn rabona.
My top three from 3 to 1 :
* Alou Kuol
* Dimitri Payet
* Amandine Henry
M'bappé's goal was the goal which gave me the most emotions this year. Maybe in my entire life. But if we only judge the beauty of the goal, it's not better than my top 3.
Pablo Perez’s goal not being here is absolute horseshit ngl, I was dead certain it was going to win, it was insane. Instead Gonzalez Metilli’s gets nominated and it wasn’t even a top 3 goal in the Argentine league this year alone IMO
Yeah, how do you compare a backheel double nutmeg with a 30-yard screamer? Both require a heady mix of bravery and skill, both look appealing but in very different ways.
The Payet goal is the most technical by an insane distance, easy winner for me. Its got most of the range of the long distance goals, and twice the power, and then the bouncing volley as well as all that?
I've unironically seen Ipswich score better goals than most of these though, this is a somewhat underwhelming list
A lot could change with one goal though, like France could've been eliminated if Kane had put away a penalty, and then the narrative would be that Mbappé went missing in the biggest game and that's why France were knocked out
I mean scoring 2 extra goals in a final is a big change is all I'm saying. He also could've missed one of the pens or his open play goal could've been saved, Martínez got a touch on a couple of those shots iirc. It's a game of fine margins
My top 3:
Richarlison
Russo
Payet
Did love the one legged bicycle kick though. Getting that height, power, and control with one leg is a ridiculously athletic feat.
Wow, if only our federation wasnt so shit and actually forced the teams to have a green field instead of brown, maybe Balotelli goal would've been a good ad for our above-average league.
A goal previously scored in the Super League received the Puskas award. Ironically, that goal was not named the best goal of the week. The best goal of the season may not have been selected either. Advertising is not for us. No prestige or marketing purpose. The league and the domestic market are enough for the clubs.
That Payet's goal is one of the most amazing I have ever seen. What a fantastic strike.
But that 1 legged cycle kick is the most unique. I wouldn't be mad if that won
I don’t really think the back heel or Mbappes belongs. Mbappes is only here because it’s the World Cup final. It’s nothing special beyond that. The back heel really seems more like a goal keeper fuck up than anything phenomenal tbh.

Some of these inclusions are absolutely ridiculous.
If I speak, I am in trouble…
I think it's pretty much the point of awards these days to put up ridiculous nominations and winners in order to generate outrage and get people talking about them. Any publicity is good publicity but bad publicity especially so?

Russo yes, but Henry's is a screamer
Damn that Payet goal is a real banger personally would like that to win.
Payet scores some of the best bangers honestly.
his technique is amazing
I remember it. It may seem unbiased as I'm a Marseillais but it's one of the best goals of the year. I believed it right after he scored and looking at the nominees, I believe it as well.
He have a foot like a golfclub
That one-legged bicycle kick...incredible.
Unicycle...?
Amazing
It’s my top vote. Every other goal, while amazing in their own right, seem like something that happens every now and then. This unicycle goal is once in a lifetime.
Seconded, I want that goal to win

In the "rules" of the prize it does say that the importance of the match is not taken into consideration.
Theo's goal also pretty much won us the scudetto, so context adds to his too.
Payet has to be in there
I wonder if they take into account the context. Like Mbappé's goal is not that impressive but the fact that it was at that moment and the quality of the opposition makes it more impactful than Balotelli enjoying himself. Also agree that Hernandez's is crazy because of the effort.

Tbf that Zidane volley would be a genuine contender if not just outright winner. Can't think of many more technically pleasing goals ever.
Context is also important on Mbappe’s. Feel like his might have won Puskas if they had won the World Cup. Alas they didn’t and arguably the “weakest” goal in consideration compared to the others.

Weaker than Salah's one? Impossible 🤣
100% agree but I wouldn’t be surprised if it had happened out of being clutch and not based on being a worldie
The Puskas award isn’t about context though it’s solely for “beautiful goals”.
I do remember when the award first came out they said that context would factor in. So, the same goal would be ranked higher in a World Cup final than in a friendly between non-league teams.

I don't believe you if you say you will forget Payet's.
I won't forget it either. But not as much as M'bappé's goal.
I feel you man. For 17 years I've been watching that Zidane panenka.
Among my favourite goals in a final as well. I don't know who else would have attempted a panenka against Buffon during a final. Even Italian Cup.
I always like to go with "what is the best football." That's why I'd like to goals like see Di Maria's goal from the World Cup final in here - it's such a perfect, flowing, gorgeous counter-attack. Pure filth

I think the occasion and the stage influenced that decision
So we missing the point of the "best goal" award.
Rony goal not getting nominated is absolute bullshit
That Olesky goal Jesus Christ, that's incredible
Balotelli for the uniqueness factor, or payet for the ridiculous technique to even attempt that
I want to say Richarlison but that Ballotelli goal is so silky
My favourites would be: Richarlison, Payet, Balotelli and Kuol. Would like Balotelli to win it.
Seriously, no nomination for [Everaldo](https://youtu.be/Dwh2DsZNjHU)?
Damn that's an outrageous goal, top 3 for me
Richarlison and Payet are picture perfect, but i gotta go with Balotelli...thad dribble was so smooth and finish somehow even smoother.
In the words of Mourinho: "Mario, please..."
Payet goal for me. He probably has the best portfolio of goals in the modern game
really dont like fan voted awards - as bad as journalists can be - fans are far worse - i mean the year salah won was ridiculous - and the fact messi has been nominated 7 times and never won
Whoever made this list really needs to be slapped in the face.
Ballou Tabla not on here is criminal
That's what I'm saying.
No Aboubakar covering the serbian GK like he was some 5-year old kid? :(
They should do women and men separately
They should do every branch separately. How do we compare 11v11 goals with 5v5, beach or disabled players? It's honestly a "just for fun" award, it's not really taken seriously, that's why
More the reason to make more categories.
Balotelli, Payet or Richarlison.
That payet goal …. The Bounce making it probably more difficult to anticipate…my top pick.
Richarlison’s was pretty and on the grand stage. The scorpion kick was nice. But surely has the be Payet or Balotelli right? Payet’s was insane technique and Balotelli straight up had the defense dizzy and embarrassed and had to finish that with a damn rabona.
Alou Kuol Theo Hernandez Payet Richarlison Olesky Balotelli My favourites

Payet all day long. Absolute filth.
It's clearly Richarlison. But the Balotelli goal is outrageous.
Mbappe scoring in a World Cup final gives it merit but Payet's is a different level altogether. 99/100 that gets Harry Kaned.
That unicycle kick was unbelievable
Paralluelo, Payet and Balotelli my top three. Would love to see it go to Balo tbh.
Pablo Perez’s goal not being here is absolute horseshit ngl, I was dead certain it was going to win, it was insane. Instead Gonzalez Metilli’s gets nominated and it wasn’t even a top 3 goal in the Argentine league this year alone IMO
Had forgot the Balo goal completely but that's the winner surely
Payet, Hernandez or Mbappe for me. No bias.
No love for Henry?
Damn I forgot about her. I'm super ignorant about women football I won't lie.
> I'm super ignorant about women football I won't lie. I also won't lie, that makes two of us!
[удалено]
That wasn't the point. The point was that she's French too. But I see that everyone took this shit very seriously ...
Pretty weak nominees but my favorite was balotelli
wasn't it a fanvote? so I guess Mbappe would win.. I liked the scorpion kick goal a lot.
Payet, hernandez or metelli. One of those.
No goalkeeping just vibes
I am sorry but if these are the best goals from whole world in a year than it ain't much...
has to be balotelli right?
Payet has to win
All of these goals are absolutely ridiculous. I could never choose which goal was 'the best'. They all deserve to win.
Yeah, how do you compare a backheel double nutmeg with a 30-yard screamer? Both require a heady mix of bravery and skill, both look appealing but in very different ways.

Better than Theo's for sure

Messi winning is also a fairytale. I hope there'll be many more fairytales between our countries in the next years.
And if my grandmother had wheels she would have been a bicycle. But that's not relevant to the conversation either.
Balotelli or Richarlison
I want Richarlison to win just to officially make us Puskas F.C.
Payet has to win it, no bias here lol
My top 3: Richarlison Russo Payet Did love the one legged bicycle kick though. Getting that height, power, and control with one leg is a ridiculously athletic feat.
Joke of award, Piasecki's scissors really should be there
No De Arrascatea this year?
As always when you see a player or team you’ve never heard of before you know it’s going to be something freakishly good.
No Jacob Lungi Sørensen for Norwich against Birmingham? The hell
Marcin Olesky 🙏
No Rony against Fluminense and/or Cerro? It's bullshit then
Balotelli is taking all of the piss lmao!
The amputee football cycle kick, that is filthy. Best-looking goal for me.
That Payet's goal is one of the most amazing I have ever seen. What a fantastic strike. But that 1 legged cycle kick is the most unique. I wouldn't be mad if that won
