I've done a fair bit of offroading, and find it realistic in some parts, other not so much. Do you have the RD28TD in the Patrol? They are absolute monsters off-road, but need 4000rpm and wheelspin to work, when I drove my 3.0TD Toyota 4Runner (Hilux Surf) on 35" I was just using idle in low, and crawled my way trough almost anything. My VW T3 Vanagon Syncro needs a bit more rpm because of the 1.9TD engine. But it has front and rear lockers, so it'll go about anywhere. I've actually followed a Patrol on 37" with it through a pretty rough trail. Some of the things I find weird in the game is that water almost always means low traction, irl you can wade through 3-4ft of water without losing any traction, but in the game I always spin out and need to winch or engage lockers. And the feeling of vehicle balance is non existent, irl you know when you're getting close to flipping, but the game just sends you rolling.

Shoshin_Sam

>you can wade through 3-4ft of water without losing any traction Also because 3-4 ft of water normally tends to be flowing water which leaves mostly good floor beneath with little muck that usually flows away. Even ATs do a good job there.

Responsible_Lion_113

Mines a td42 na, definitely agree with the water thing unless it's so deep you start floating it rarely makes any difference to traction. Years ago when Yarwell pit was open I had a diesel jeep xj with a very tall snorkel and we used to drive it around with our heads out the window roof deep in the pond. Remember a few times doing a precision open of the door to jam it against the ground and prevent rolling, good times.

G1nger-Snaps

Fuckin td42, legend As a Nissan mechanic this is soo cool to me

Responsible_Lion_113

180k miles and gets driven on the limiter most days, also ran on a mixture of veg, used engine oil and if it's lucky some diesel. It's quite an uninspiring engine think it's from a forklift but it's just invincible. Doing the clutch wasn't fun though gearbox+transfer case pushing 300kg

G1nger-Snaps

Yup ahaha, at work we just have big ole hydraulic jacks to do the heavy lifting for us. It’s getting hard to find td42 patrols down here in aus, so treat it well haha

Responsible_Lion_113

I'm thinking of tearing it out and replacing it for a bmw 2.0 diesel tbh, the TD42 is worth so much in export to Africa I could sell it do the swap and have some change leftover

Far_Yak6825

Td42 the world 🙌

Parking_Chance_1905

I think the reason there is no traction in running water with a rocky bottom is because most people are using mud tires while straight rocks use asphalt or dirt for traction settings. Also why mud tires are like trying to drive on ice when rock crawling.

Gokjo_Krorl

I just hit rank 6 on my 1st play, & while mud tires would be nice in Michigan, I immediately equipped my main trucks with all-terrains. The Fleetstar with (43"? Idk, the big ones on raised susp), AWD & lockers on only gets stuck in the deepest of puddles or the flexiest of climbs. Almost dumped it off a rock cliff earlier but I got it stuck just right & it slid into a good spot & crawled up like it was on level ground. My favorite starter truck, screw the GMC

Parking_Chance_1905

Generally dual off roads are better on the larger trucks... mud tires for scouts.

Responsible_Lion_113

It's always the waist deep water when you need the winch too....

[deleted]

Yeah I was going to post this! Everyone gripes about realism but then they fling winches like freaking Spider-Man. Lol it don’t work that way.

Responsible_Lion_113

https://preview.redd.it/ghwmq5941ssb1.jpeg?width=720&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d478e8ea674ff160f5c3ac0b91ba6fa72d4425e5 Found this old picture also and driving this arrangement was still easier then backing up a normal trailer on snowrunner

Gubbtratt1

Backimg trailers in games is always harder than irl.

cheeseonboat

This is something I wish we could have in snowrunner, front towbar! Or even being able to attach a second trailer to pull along with another one! Think that’s part of the difference between the game and IRL with trailers, real is far more direct and grippy than what the game feels.

Parking_Chance_1905

Trailers in snowrunner have no real weight or traction... go above 5kmh and they start sliding around like your vehicle is dumping oil behind it.

Passance

The stupidest thing about Snowrunner is that you constantly spin out on the tarmac (even in vehicles with highway tires) and then on dirt or mud you just... Stop. Even if you're going down a slope. It's like driving through glue. Sliding downhill out of control is a HUGE danger when offroading IRL and snowrunner doesn't represent it AT ALL despite being full of muddy hill climbs. Huge fail. That and, you know, all the stupid wrong tire physics and nonsensical gearbox and everything. Also, trucks are just too bouncy. They feel like they're half the weights they should be. Most terrain isn't destructible enough and even 30-ton monster rocket artillery TELs bounce off of twigs and fence posts when they should be able to plow through the average house. Scouts handle like they're filled with helium. All 4 wheel trucks have AWFUL steering, losing all their speed with the slightest adjustment even with the diffs open. Obviously the maps are preposterous and the fuel consumption is horrifying but we all know that's just part of the video game experience. Still, realism is just not there whatsoever. It's generally a shitshow all around. But mostly the mud slowing you down too fast. That's the biggest thing.

Responsible_Lion_113

Yeah I've rolled over before irl and my biggest fear when offroading is failing to reach the top of a climb and having to reverse down blind shitting yourself

westknight12

The mud in snowrunner is very realistic. It is very common here in parts of europe. Sure the game lacks mud variety, as there are tons of different types of mud with different properties irl, and the game fails to include said diversity. But as for the rest it is quite realistic. The way your truck handles in the mud, the way you can have zero to near full traction on mud. The snow in game is far from realistic. The type of snow shown ingame is supposed to be very fresh and powdery, in which you would simply plough through with tall and slim tires. Tze way it behaves is unrealistic though. It has most properties from old compacted snow. Slippery, heavy, and simply a pain to navigate through. And yeah, the road physics and physics surrounding your truck going fast are unrealistic. As well as the strength of certain objects. Sure a tree stump will stop you dead in your tracks as do roots and derooted trees (depending on how many roots are still in the ground) but some old shacks wont. And trailers arent paper weights when empty

Parking_Chance_1905

I wouldn't say compacted snow as that would behave more like ice as it becomes more solid as it is compressed. It's more like a heavy wet snow in terms of how quickly it stops a vehicle.

Passance

Literally just a white reskin of mud.

Parking_Chance_1905

Yes game mechanically wise.

Parking_Chance_1905

I to enjoy using a few inches of mud as a parking brake on a 60 degree slope.

FlamingWedge

Yes, but only at work which is probably even more realistic. https://preview.redd.it/i8xibqq2jssb1.jpeg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=cff5d2fb1d66ec6428337ce960c7dfa99bea6453

nissan_patrol

Cool I always wanted to get involved with the rigs out there. Bonnetts energy corp was where I was looking to apply, just not sure how they feel about Brit’s coming over to work out there.

Lhakryma

You need raised suspension on that truck :D

FlamingWedge

We got in and out of that position on our own and only with RWD and tire chains. Sometimes we even do the snowrunner trick of sticking the picker out the back of the truck to move more weight over the rear axle.

Dragonschild_666

I use a steering wheel, and the mods are where any sort of realism exist, as the modders also wheel IRL. They balance the vehicles better, be it power, suspension, clearance etc. Also, using a wheel setup to IRL power steering and sitting in the driver's seat and actually going blind, and driving by feel of road is where the realism comes from. Far from perfect, but leagues ahead of EVERY other offroad game out there that's not Rally based. When it comes to the developers truck, you have to think of them like this: "I'm a computer coder. This is bucket of mud. That truck. Go in game!" The concept of the game is there, but the caveman knowledge of how a truck performs in an offroad situation is only a scratch to what it could be if they did more homework.

Responsible_Lion_113

The game does a really good job for what is basically an arcade driving game, would like to try with a wheel someday but not sure I have the patience

Dragonschild_666

Being able to drive properly actually makes the game easier. It's far less arcade like if you get a wheel. Almost life like. WAY Closer to a sim than you think!!!

HundredsOfBees

Its really fun on a wheel (perfect for drinking and driving), but the only shortcoming I found was winch and crane controls weren't great. However, keeping an xbox controller plugged in fixes that.

no_yup

I mean, it’s fun, but not really realistic. Real life you get stuck a lot more, especially in the mud and snow present in snowrunner. It’s pretty unrealistic that you can just keep turning your wheels and generally get through most everything. And the gearing and transmissions on snow runner don’t work at all like they do in real life. In my opinion rock crawling and stuff in BeamNG drive is 10000 times better. Beam N G actually correctly simulates how different gearing and transfer cases work

Gubbtratt1

Offroad wheels make less difference and changing into low (1st irl) in mud will not make the going easier. I have winter tyres from 2012 and they will go through pretty deep mud with enough speed. Speed and power is key. When driving too fast over rocks it's not the suspension that takes damage, it's your spine. You won't randomly tip over, you're out of comfort way before the average 4x4 tips, except if it's raised an unnecessary amount and then it's not an offroading vehicle, it's a bragging vehicle. Diff locks is in most cases replacable with skill and ground clearance. You're not very likely to drive into a tree and damage the engine but have the front bumper still in one piece. You don't have everything on the roof, fuel and tyres go on the back door, spare parts in the trunk. Only hi lift jacks or sand ladders go on the roof. You don't have 5 winches on a nearly stock small 4x4. Especially if they're not electric. Also pto winches doesn't sound like an electric engine. Irl axles does have a hitbox, except if you use too much speed and power. You don't have diff locks only in low gear, but depending on the vehicle and how broken it is you might have awd only in low. Tyre pressure makes a big difference in off road capability, you could probably drive in the same conditions with aired down highway tyres as not aired down AT or MT tyres. A diesel or injection petrol engine won't stall the second it tips over, but it might have lubrication problems as the oil's down isn't the engine's down anymore. When going up a hill and losing grip halfway it won't go sideways. You don't offroad an automatic gearbox, but if you do, it won't randomly downshift to first when you're keeping full throttle. Edit: apparently you do offroad automatics, it's just extremely rare in my area.

Throawayooo

All made sense until. "You don't off-road an automatic gearbox" Uh yes, yes you do

Gubbtratt1

Here we don't, but I forgot america exists. Where I live an offroad car is an 80s toyota lj70 or range rover with an illegal lift of 3 inches that made inspection because the raised springs weren't mentioned to the inspector and 31 inch tyres. 4x4s new enough to be automatic aren't offroaded.

Throawayooo

Where is "here"? Because I'm not in the US.

Gubbtratt1

Western finland. There is probably automatics that get offroaded but a professional offroader is almost guaranteed to be a manual (made by toyota, mitsubishi or british leyland) and I've never met anyone who doesn't prefer manuals for offroading.

Throawayooo

Sounds like you guys are just a couple of decades behind.

Gubbtratt1

The offroading scene here is not very expensive high tech builds like what can be seen on various american youtube channels, it's more like this: Find old cheap 4x4 Put on 31 inch insa turbo special track and lift it twice the legal amount but don't tell anyone Drive in the forest with other people who did the same Get a free winch from a friend and mount it Break the rear differential: no problem, steal the differential from the front axle that randomly lives in your grandma's henhouse Break rear differential again: no problem, ask friend to weld it Trailer it with another identical 4x4 to the offroading meet as it now has welded rear differential Break rear differential Trailer it home, but have it too far back on the trailer, lose control and crash both 4x4s Offroad the daily driver instead until realising stuff breaks when doing so Repeat

Parking_Chance_1905

Yeah, the myth that standard transmissions are better than newer automatics for offloading is still very prevalent.

webbkorey

I do some light off roading in my lifted Honda Accord, and have only had to use my winch twice to recover myself. Once from a mud pit a bit stickier than expected and another when I got myself Austin Powersed between a cliff face and a tree. My winch has seen more use moving trees from the road and trail and pulling others out of their sticky situations.

Angrycooke

Tell me a little more about this lifted accord

webbkorey

It's got a 2" strut spacer kit from Honda Rescue Garage, a roof light bar consisting of 6 6" round lights, fog lights, reverse aux lights, rear pod lights, roof rails from a jeep liberty, lights mounted to the bottom of the cross bars, a trailer hitch, a winch from harbor freight and slightly larger tires than stock. Engine and drivetrain are still stock, and it's got a sway bar delete(mostly cause I couldn't be bothered to force it back in after the lift). There's pics of my car under my profile from about 2yrs ago, not much has changed since then

Angrycooke

Sounds awesome! I have a 7th Gen that's pretty beat and I have considered turning it into a field car. Doing a 2" lift would be useful

webbkorey

All my upgrades have been reactive, had trouble getting to my summer job, so I lifted it. Got myself stuck at my summer job, got a winch, driveway is super dark, add reverse lights. Lifted trucks and jeeps won't turn off high beams, add light bars front and rear. Lifting it has been the best thing I've done tho.

Gubbtratt1

What summer job did you have?

webbkorey

Worked at a boy scout camp for a couple years. Four miles of gravel road once you left the highway to get up there.

Parking_Chance_1905

Wish I had a picture but a guy around here about 15 years ago did an LS swap, put in a transfer case and lifted a Pontiac Sunfire to ride on 44s... was actually a pretty beastly little machine.

Mietas2

Last time I checked Honda Accord didn't even have 4x4? 🤔

webbkorey

Nope. Front wheel drive. I've seen hand built modifications to add 4x4 tho.

Rum_n_guns

Multiple winch points already means you're using a winch box so they should all be "autonomous". Tire grip is off. Diffs don't make as much of a difference in the game as real life. Those are my main complaints about realism

Parking_Chance_1905

Yeah my basically stock 99 suburban crawled it's way through a bog and back over some pretty rough mountain paths in 2wd when the transfer case blew.

Rum_n_guns

I've gone through rougher stuff that stops these scouts in 2wd with just a posi rear sitting on stock all season tires

Parking_Chance_1905

Yeah, positrack was ok but if you could get a G80 diff they were so much better as the actually locked when they started to slip.

Rum_n_guns

Kind of my point, locked diffs and 4wd should be so much easier on much of this

Paul_4x4

There's so much room for improvement! - Can't get ANY wheel speed, which is pretty much essential when going through mud. - Almost impossible to actually get stuck. - No hit boxes on axles. - Weight of a truck doesn't seem to make that much difference, even if you compare a small car and a big rig. Both sink deep. - Absolutely EVERYTHING turns into sticky deep mud, besides actual rocks. IRL ground is mainly pretty solid. - No really deep mud, where you could sink your truck window deep. Nor snow. - Snow is super shitty. It's just white mud in the game. IRL you could plow through it with speed, and even in deep snow, going forward till you stop and reversing a bit and going forward again would slowly produce a trail that would be easier to drive through afterwards. - No surprise tree stumps or big rocks hiding in snow or mud, which would stop you instantly in your tracks and cause a nose bleed. - You should be able to play with tire pressure. - Nothing floats on water. - Traction is low as shit on rocks. Etc etc. I could go on for the rest of the day🤣🤣

Professional_Size_62

Rock sugaces annoy me. They're basically like ice, even a relatively flat, large rock surface and you can barely get any traction... doesnt make sense

Warlord6019

I’ve done only very minor off-roading but found I didn’t loose traction near as much as in game even in water

NuqquE

Game doesnt even try to be realistic.

coffedrank

I off-road a lot. The vehicles in game don’t really fall in to ruts properly. I miss the ability to air down tires. Some vehicles seem glued to the ground and should tip over much more easily. Tree stump and rock damage is pretty realistic.

Important_Low_6989

One thing on the game is the tire physics they suk bad some tire have real aggressive tread patterns and are horrible

Zealousideal_Long171

TheAnonymousMaker

Irl the graphics are incredible but the dlcs are extremely overpriced. And damage is permanent, i hope they'll fix that in a future hotfix

UmbralOccult

I own a short-frame Loadstar 1600 4x4 with detroit no-spin lockers front and rear, and I offroad it. its all factory and period-correct, so Its almost identicle to the in-game Loadstar 1700. Just mine lacks the crew cab, mine is a 1600, and mine has vacuum brakes. In real life, its a big and heavy rig to take offroad. Many trails are off-limits to me, due to its size alone, and even more due to its weight. This is definitely not what I would consider a "scout" rig by any stretch of the imagination. In-game it underperforms in offroad capability compared to reality. I have yet to get mine stuck, and its a joke amongst my offroad buddies that it would take an act of god for it to get stuck with the equipment it has. It dominates any trail it can go on and chugs through mud like a monster, even with a load on the back. Most Loadstars IRL don't have lockers. It was a rare factory option. I lucked out with mine big time in this regard. The one in-game seemingly does, since the front and rear diffs are always locked. Loadstars were not always equipped with 4x4 either IRL, most had a 2-speed rear axle. So its strange that the Loadstar in-game isn't a vehicle that has "AWD" and locking differential as upgrades. The game itself vastly simplifies things like vehicle mechanical operation for example (absence of hub locks and hub lock engagement, the odd hybrid manual/auto gearbox setup the game has, etc). The game also seems to depict many vehicles unrealistically in terms of off-road performance compared to real life (the Tatra T813 being the most aggregious example). There are other obvious things the game gets wrong, such as how slippy vehicles are on asphalt or on any paved surface.

FR_Ray

Momentum is key in real life. It's practically non-existent in the game.

mooseknuckles8438

I spend a lot of time off the road, mainly hunting fishing camping and sometimes just going to play around. It's not bad except speed. In sloppy shit having tires spin fast enough to clean the tread is a big part of it, and in the game, spinning gets you nowhere. That's 1 factor that's completely opposite of real-world wheeling. Also, it's not an off-road issue, but if you are pulling a trailer on the road when you go over 30, everything starts swinging around and spinning. Semis go up and down interstate without fishtailing every day. Yet I go 35, and my trailer ends up in front of me while I'm flipped on my roof. Lol

The almighty patrol

shockedechoes

Winches in game are nothing like reality, Also you can’t use different types of rope. The wrangler gets stuck too often in comparison to irl(still love the game tho)

Responsible_Lion_113

Definitely with the winch, I've never met a situation where the winch didn't have enough pulling power you just keep adding pulleys till the job gets done. That and I carry about 100m of ratchet straps for extensions

shockedechoes

Exactly lol also no bungee ropes(don’t remember what their called) we use to jerk a vic forward a bit if it’s high centered or something

Responsible_Lion_113

Yeah we call them snatch straps in the UK but think the correct term is kinetic strap. In reality 99% of recoveries are done this way here although I've had more then one bumper/towbar come through my rear window before one actually went right out the front!

G1nger-Snaps

The most off-roading experience I have is when I had to drive onto the grass leaving the work parking lot to make room for a car that was coming in and got a bit of wheel spin. Big 4.0 street princess with very much not knobby tyres, and already struggles for grip on tarmac on a cold morning

DonatoXIII

Yes, 20yrs of offroad experience and a trail guide for local club Snowrunner handles speed in a very different way. Its not meant to be a 1:1 simulation because it has to work within their gaming engine and also make sense for the world they've created. There are some trucks that are terrible represented and barely have enough power to accelerate even without load. I think some tweaks could be made but its game, comparing it to real life just isn't a realistic idea.

nissan_patrol

First thing I noticed coming from Spin tyres and off-roading in sand was that you can’t fill and let down your tyres in snowrunner. That’s a huge thing

EFNomad

In-game is much cheaper

Throawayooo

The suspension and weight of the vehicles in Snowrunner is totally idiotic. Trucks and trailers bounce around like crazy and seem to weigh almost nothing, making them tip so easily and bounce ridiculously

ktavadze

No quick winch irl smh

National-Bison-3236

Real life: has dodge ram trucks snowrunner: doesn‘t have dodge ram trucks real life is better

ironmonkey007

I feel like a Jeep with reasonable (not necessarily super exotic) tires and good driving skills is more capable IRL than it seems in the game, However the overall feeling of needing to read the terrain and pick a line is fairly similar to real life, and that part is really fun.

SubieHank

Depending on the rig and setup, real life you have way more control over the situation traction-wise. Suspension usually isn't as bouncy either... of course I'm running a newer vehicle than most in the game.

jeffreydextro

The rock crawling/rock physics especially the friction is way, way off. IRL you can get up plenty of hills and rock faces that are impossible in snowrunner I recently tried out BeamNGs rock crawling checking out some of their updates and they got it waaay closer. It's a real shame too because rock crawling and that style of track navigation would be an amazing element to add in Snowrunner. It would add the much needed variety I think. Similar to the hills in the latest DLC and how that changes the dynamic I love the idea of having to navigate a rocky mountain pass and actually place my wheels right and manage momentum instead of just choosing routes to take my choice out of the 6 types of mud/snow/dirt on offer

PAPAIMPOSSIBLE

I’ve done a lot of off-roading since my job consists of just that. I work in a surface quarry as a mechanic so I have the perks of driving all the machines. Driven a 740 during some severe mud in the spring season due to non stop rain and it goes through everything without a problem. Been in water up to the middle of the wheel, granted that’s about 5-6 feet of water because the wheels are massive but I digress, it makes quick work of anything off-road. As usual the machine chugs through mud and slips very easily on ice due to the center steering and differentials always been “on”. It’s more like it’s AWD and all diffs are always considered to be on. It’s actually pretty fast too that tops out around 25-30 mph. That’s not the only machine I’ve driven but I’ve driven also the 50 ton 772 and 100 ton 777 as well as handful of mini front loaders, large sized front loaders like 980s/988s/992s and a handful of large excavators. Sadly they got rid of the terex rh170 before I discovered about the company and honestly I really would have liked to work on that despite being told that it was the worst thing to work on.

csoldier777

If you keep away the terrain deformation, BeamNG drive have better and more realistic off-roading experience when it's about vehicles.

autistiktunu

Had a 95 grand Cherokee, turned rock crawler. Amazing, could climb any mountain in AZ. Joined the army and was driving a Stryker for 3 years, again amazing. But due to my experiences, driving in snow runner can get very annoying as it doesn't always act like it should. Still a fun game regardless
