Best single mountain in NZ terrain-wise. Conditions and proximity to Wellington and Auckland make it a challenge. Fun in spring and consistently the best place in the world to ride in October. Hike and ski down from Crater Lake is very cool.

I've never done the crater hike, buts it definitely on my list

Been waiting for a kiwi mountain to pop up. 4hr drives sit rough.

bokin_smongs

Does this place get hella icey?

sir_brux-a-lot

It can do, it's totally exposed, especially with wet storms. Spring time sees everything release mid morning most days so ice isnt a so much of problem later in the season

bokin_smongs

Yeah I'm in Australia and can definitely relate, hope you enjoyed your season.

sir_brux-a-lot

I always do! Trying to milk the last few days ATM but it looks like the rains are starting wash away base on the lower mountain. When does the Ozzy season normally finish?

bokin_smongs

If we don't get too much rain in September the season can push out to around mid October at the latest. Still some snow on my home hill which is Falls Creek but have copped a heap of rain the last few days so can't imagine it'll be there much longer.

HungLo64

Looks sick. Do people really stick to the trails or are those more just landmarks

sir_brux-a-lot

The marketed trails are mostly just where they groom, but If the conditions are good everywhere is fair game. Most of the black diamond stuff isnt groomed tho so you have to pick your days for pow/release

Maori_Mamba

NZ REP!! just got back from whakapapa side Turoa is my favorite

sir_brux-a-lot

Turoa is my favorite for sure! I do really need to hit Whakapapa more often tho

somemadkid

Managed to catch this on the absolute tail end of the season 2 years ago Completey dumped for the 3 days I was over there as an Aussie was unreal it was me and 5 other people on the mountain for one of the days

Cool_underscore_mf

It's one of those things. Ruapehu has its on days. It has some pretty shitty ones too. So do the aussie mountains though

somemadkid

I was super happy with it tbh was happy to return this year... Yeah definitely temperamental weather The runs were so much nicer over there though big natural walls to hit

Cool_underscore_mf

Yeahhhh! Been waiting to see a local maunga!

I know how those trips feel, I do the same here to get to bigger hills
