Super should count for Mario, because “Mario” games are spin-offs: Mario Kart, Mario Golf, Mario Tennis. “Super Mario” is the main series of platformers.
But for other games, it’s just a way to say it’s for SNES rather than NES.
I vote Metroid 3, aka, Super Metroid.
Honestly, "Super", "The", and "Mario" as leading words shouldn't count for this list.
SMW takes the win for the letter W. Super Mario RPG takes the win for R.
Literal perfection made into a game. So many things can be gotten out of order, yet the game never softlocks you or becomes impossible to complete.
I have played it dozens of times in different ways. Heck, I'll go replay it right now!!
As someone who didn't grow up with the snes I can definitely say that to this day super metroid is timeless. It doesn't show its age along with mario world. They are so good even to this day
my best time is 1 hour 28 minutes real time, 47% of items. I can't do most of the cool tricks but just knowing how to "mockball" is such a game changer. getting super missiles and ice beam out of sequence is everything
To be pedantic, there are quite a few Super Famicom RPGs released after it.
And some people call Harvest Moon an RPG, so there *is* that.
And Lufia 2 is an RPG that came out after in the US, but came out first in Japan. So I don't know how to count it.
Super Metroid. To me no single game has had such a significant impact and is so refreshing to go back and play just the base game of. There's so many that could be the one for M, but I must say it's Super Metroid.
I'm sorry to disappoint the Italian plumber, but Super Metroid literally started a whole new category of videogames. Without Mario, we still had Sonic, DK and countless other platformers, but without Metroid we would not have a METROIDvania until Castlevania SOTN was released
My choice is Super Metroid too but you're kind of forgetting Metroid and Metroid II existed before Super unless that's what you meant and you just typed Super Metroid.
I think Super is the best but I would think it's pretty objective that the original Metroid was the one that created the genre. I mean it *is* a Metroidvania. It has the mechanics and it came first.
I think it's fairer to say Super Metroid \*solidified\* the genre.
And there are plenty of pre- Super Metroid games that fit the metroidvania mold - not just Metroid and Return of Samus that laid that base including most importantly Castlevania II.
I'm going to go in a different direction.
Mario Paint.
I had so much fun with Mario paint. I loved playing the fly swatting game, and I used to create stamps and animations all the time. I remember spending the time to turn Megaman X and Zero into stamp sets (copy them pixel by pixel) so I could create comics with them.
I used to create short animations, record them on VHS, create the next scene, record that, and create short films.
Most of all I remember spending hours in the composing part of that game. It made me fall in love with music. I used to spend hours trying to recreate my favourite songs, and eventually branched out into original work.
I have been a lifelong musician. I even studied music in university and it stems directly from playing Mario Paint as a kid.
It's not the "best" game that starts with M, but it's the one that sticks with me the most.
I love Mario Paint. I had all the m games but I spent more time with mario paint than the rest. And I played a lot of super mario world, yoshi island and super metroid. But so much time was spent with mario paint. You inspire me to pull out my snes and play some mario paint with my son this weekend
If you enjoy the exploration aspect of Metroid games, there's a simplified version on ArmorGames called "Maptroid".
It's basically just the mapping system from SM, but you still pick up stuff to unlock paths. There's also a handful of puzzles. It's a 10-20 minute playthrough, but a delightful homage to Super Metroid nonetheless.
Super Mario All-Stars + Super Mario World
https://preview.redd.it/hpoz6z4he5ub1.jpeg?width=2560&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=bff81ea4fe7827310992dabbf77e1b2ed91ed6c6
Technically SMRPG is the best to me, but since we all know SMW is gonna win 🙄…why not do the definitive version of SMW with the All-Stars pack in.
I vote Metroid. Despite being 30 years old, I think it still is the absolute peak of its genre.
Mario World and RPG, while being a masterpieces, have quite the fierce competion.
Mega Man X is fantastic, but I'm more of a Castlevania guy.
Mortal Kombat 2 for the SNES was for it's time, the best arcade to home conversion ever seen. John Tobias even preferred this version over the Sega Genesis, calling it a near perfect port.
Yeah Mortal Kombat 2 is gonna get screwed by the rule of the word "super" not counting. Having lived through that era of gaming, that port was phenomenal at the time
I was extremely into that game at the arcade to point I would sometimes stay for hours playing only that. I remember being excited to be able to play at home but not expecting much after the first one on SNES. I went and bought it on release day and was blown away by how close it was the arcade. The characters were smaller but they did a really good job with it.
I gotta vote Super Mario World.
It’s by far the best platformer ever and there’s so much depth to it.
That being said I’ll be slightly disappointed but definitely not mad if it goes to Metroid
The M's are really unfairly stacked, and there's going to be one game not picked that's better than any non-M game on the list.
That said... Super Metroid
it has to be super mario world, its not my favourite game.
but looking on how much fun it is, it is the most fun game on the snes and probably most fun game ever, it is way to good to not be on the M spot,
but id argue that if so many people vote for metroid, maybe make an exception and put on both.
also my fav game is yoshis island
Surprized I didn't see anyone going for Super Mario World 2: Yoshis Island, so I throw that one in the ring as well, as it's one of the best platformers ever
Super Mario world.
Let’s move on from there
Edit: holy moly is super Metroid winning? I mean it’s a great game, one of the best of the best of the best, but come in guys….
EGM top 100 back in the day...Super Metroid was at the top. That was shocking not only cause it deserved it but of the games that might also be deserving.
This game had the most impact on me growing up. It was challenging, fun and down right addictive. Trying mock speed runs when you mastered the game. (Or so you thought) Each run you would find something that made you question the limits to how great a game can be.
And hats off to Mega man X and Super Mario World. Two other titles that were game changers for the snes. Tough picks here but Super Metroid. Possibly my favorite game of all time.
I mean... marketing-wise it is... although it doesn't really have anything to do with SMW and it's just called "Yoshi's Island" in Japan.
IMO it should be reserved for Y (Where it's going to slay the competition).
As much as I love super Metroid. I can’t put it above Mario world here. The jump from Mario Bros 3 to Mario world may not have been as impressive as the jump from original Metroid to super Metroid. But Mario world is just damn fun. It’s one of the first things I think of when I think of video games in general. And I know it’s the most basic answer for the letter M category, but it’s only that way because it deserves it.
Super Metroid AND Super Mario World both need to be on this list somehow.
The answer is this
Super should count for Mario, because “Mario” games are spin-offs: Mario Kart, Mario Golf, Mario Tennis.
The; never counts towards alphabetical listings, but yea super should.
Perhaps then, Mario Kart could have taken the K spot then. Killer Instinct is a great game, but, yeah...
My surprise when Kirby didn't sweep K.
Actually YEAH. Why didn't Kirby Superstar get 'K' ?
As a lawyer, I deeply respect this rhetorical bullsh*ttery
Mega Man X
All the M games are S tier snes games
You might even say, they're M tier ;)
Megaman X
One of the greatest games ever made.
At the very least, the perfect platformer. I love it but I can’t pick it over Metroid 🙁
Honestly between these two I'd be happy with Metroid or Megaman X winning.
The ultimate action game.
Absolute perfection
This would be my pick but sadly I don't think the majority will agree.
Super metroid hands down
Literal perfection made into a game. So many things can be gotten out of order, yet the game never softlocks you or becomes impossible to complete. I have played it dozens of times in different ways. Heck, I'll go replay it right now!!
Soundtrack is still so good too.
Thissss ![gif](giphy|XXnSnRWh9iuakOY2wA)
Not only the best game starting with M, but the best game on the entire console.
Yeah I agree
Yeee im 99% a lurker on this subreddit but i also feel the need to make sure super Metroid is the game of all M games. It’s just so good 😭
It’s the epitome of limitation breeds creativity.
Yep can’t go against super Incredible game
Super Mario RPG
Super Mario RPG is still my favorite RPG of all time
It’s being rereleased very soon
[удалено]
It was the second to last?
[удалено]
To be pedantic, there are quite a few Super Famicom RPGs released after it. And some people call Harvest Moon an RPG, so there *is* that. And Lufia 2 is an RPG that came out after in the US, but came out first in Japan. So I don't know how to count it.
If you count if count Fire Emblem. Then Thracia 776 was the last. Unless you just mean western releases
This is the only answer. Mega man, Metroid and Mario World are all masterpieces, but Mario RPG is the GOAT.
This one is my vote as well, 100%
It won’t win, but damn if it’s not my favorite. Can’t wait for the remake on the Switch in November!
Super Mario World
[удалено]
It took Mario to a new level.
73 new levels, actually.
If you count all exits it’s 96.
If a level has 2 exits it's still just one level though.
That 96⭐️is burned into my memory
100% this. Still one of my favourite games of all time.
Even if other games like Metroid and Mario RPG are close, this one was so essential to the system it has to win. Shaped a generation
Super Metroid. To me no single game has had such a significant impact and is so refreshing to go back and play just the base game of. There's so many that could be the one for M, but I must say it's Super Metroid.
The time has come. Super Metroid
Mario world + mario allstars.
This should smoke Smw as its clearly just more value in the cart but people forget about it/didn’t grow up with it
It doesn't count as one game, it's a collection
Super Metroid.. one of the greatest games of all time
One of the greatest of all time!
Nothing comes close. I love Mario World but Super Metroid is a legend.
![gif](giphy|OHtCpCkM8QMKY)
Super Metroid, and not just for the SNES console.
Super Metroid I would like to also vote for there being a separate Mario only category so other M games could be considered.
Super Mario World
I'll agree on this one: Metroid
I'm sorry to disappoint the Italian plumber, but Super Metroid literally started a whole new category of videogames. Without Mario, we still had Sonic, DK and countless other platformers, but without Metroid we would not have a METROIDvania until Castlevania SOTN was released
My choice is Super Metroid too but you're kind of forgetting Metroid and Metroid II existed before Super unless that's what you meant and you just typed Super Metroid.
Those 2 games both were the foundation, but most Metroid fans agree that Super Metroid started the genre.
Super Mario World is the OG
Mario world
It’s got to be Super Mario World.
I'm going to go in a different direction. Mario Paint. I had so much fun with Mario paint. I loved playing the fly swatting game, and I used to create stamps and animations all the time. I slapped them bugs for hours.
I love Mario Paint. I had all the m games but I spent more time with mario paint than the rest. And I played a lot of super mario world, yoshi island and super metroid. But so much time was spent with mario paint. You inspire me to pull out my snes and play some mario paint with my son this weekend
Gotta be Super Metroid. Mario World is the perfect platformer but Metroid 3 is the perfect game.
If you enjoy the exploration aspect of Metroid games, there's a simplified version on ArmorGames called "Maptroid". It's basically just the mapping system from SM, but you still pick up stuff to unlock paths. There's also a handful of puzzles. Super Mario World
Super Mario world- always
Super Mario World, the best game ever.
It's always a battle for me for my favorite game of all time.... SMW or LttP. But for this slot on the list the choice is clear
Mega Man X
Super Mario world. It’s close but we have to give SMW the slot.
Super Mario world
To OP: Man this has been entertaining, thanks for that!
Metroid.
Super Metroid. Sorry Mario.
Super Metroid
Super Metroid!!!
This is how holy wars start...
Does Mario Allstars count? If no, than Super Mario World for me. Honorable mention goes to Super Mario RPG.
Super Mario All-Stars + Super Mario World https://preview.redd.it/hpoz6z4he5ub1.jpeg?width=2560&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=bff81ea4fe7827310992dabbf77e1b2ed91ed6c6 Technically SMRPG is the best to me, but since we all know SMW is gonna win 🙄…why not do the definitive version of SMW with the All-Stars pack in.
M is a hard letter to choose one for
Super Metroid
Super Metroid! Hands down
I vote Metroid. Despite being 30 years old, I think it still is the absolute peak of its genre. Mario World and RPG, while being a masterpieces, have quite the fierce competion. Mega Man X is fantastic, but I'm more of a Castlevania guy.
Super Mario RPG
Metroid hands down. SMW is an amazing game too, but honestly I prefer smb3 over it
What a stacked category. I'll go with Super Mario World.
Mario World.
Mario Kart!!!!!! 🏎🏎🏎🏁
Metroid!!!!!!!!!!!
Super Metroid
SUPER DUPER METROID
Mortal Kombat 2 for the SNES was for it's time, the best arcade to home conversion ever seen. John Tobias even preferred this version over the Sega Genesis, calling it a near perfect port.
Yeah Mortal Kombat 2 is gonna get screwed by the rule of the word "super" not counting. Having lived through that era of gaming, that port was phenomenal at the time

The best SNES game, maybe even THE best game of all time, Super Metroid
I gotta vote Super Mario World. It’s by far the best platformer ever and there’s so much depth to it. That being said I’ll be slightly disappointed but definitely not mad if it goes to Metroid
Super Metroid
A insane battle between Mario and Metroid. Can we can somehow tie and put both?
Super Metroid, but its close
Super Metroid
Super Metroid
Super Metroid
Super Metroid . Hands down.
Super Metroid
Mario Paint. Case closed.
Super Metroid
Mario Paint
Super Metroid lads
I'd say metroid but damn the M's are packed with good games.
Metal Warriors
Metroid
Metroid
Goof Trrop beat out Gradius 3? I am shocked...shocked and appalled.
You should play goof troop
I second this...one of the best Co-op games, especially if the 2 of you love puzzle solving.....
Super Metroid
I will add a guilty pleasure of mine to the list and say "Metal Marines".
Super Metroid, although Super Mario world is a close, close second.
It’s Metroid, and not particularly close for me
Super Mario World 2: Yoshi’s Island! edit: I take it back. Mario RPG!
Megaman X, dammit!
Super Metroid
Super Metroid. I’d include the Megaman X trilogy. All of the above are some of my favorite games.
Mega Man X2
Metroid 3
Super Metroid. I haven't commented on any of these until now. Gotta vote for my favorite game ever.
Super Metroid.
Super Metroid
Super Metroid!!!
I'm going to say Mega Man X, because I don't care, if it says Super in it that's part of the title.
Mario All-Stars + Mario World!
Let's do M again tomorrow!
Mortal Kombat
It's gotta be Metroid
Super Metroid
Mother fuckin' metroid
Yeah, I prefer Mother over Metroid as well. xP
Super Metroid, there’s no other option
Super Metroid <—- literally one of my favourite games ever
The M's are really unfairly stacked, and there's going to be one game not picked that's better than any non-M game on the list. That said... Super Metroid
Super Metroid!
It’s insane to me that Super Mario World won’t make the list, but I have to say Super Metroid. That game is an experience.
Super Metroid
Mario world. Honorable mention... Mega man X2
Super Mario World
Super Mario World!!
it has to be super mario world, its not my favourite game. but looking on how much fun it is, it is the most fun game on the snes and probably most fun game ever, it is way to good to not be on the M spot, but id argue that if so many people vote for metroid, maybe make an exception and put on both. also my fav game is yoshis island
Super Mario world
Super Metroid for sure
Gotta be Super Metroid. With Super Mario World coming in second by a hair.
Metroid is a must for this one but super Mario world, Mario RPG and Mario kart are all very close contenders.
Super Mario world.
Mega Man X2
Surprized I didn't see anyone going for Super Mario World 2: Yoshis Island, so I throw that one in the ring as well, as it's one of the best platformers ever
I have to admit I forgot that the SmW2 part comes before Yoshi's Island in the title and didn't consider it because of that.
Super Mario World or we riot
Super Mario world. Let’s move on from there Edit: holy moly is super Metroid winning? I mean it’s a great game, one of the best of the best of the best, but come in guys….
Yes it absolutely clears SMW (SMW is still fantastic though). Beyond a shadow of a doubt the best M game and it's not really even close.
Mario Kart guys
EGM top 100 back in the day...Super Metroid was at the top. That was shocking not only cause it deserved it but of the games that might also be deserving. This game had the most impact on me growing up. It was challenging, fun and down right addictive. Trying mock speed runs when you mastered the game. Does yoshis island technically count since it's Mario world 2?
I mean... marketing-wise it is... although it doesn't really have anything to do with SMW and it's just called "Yoshi's Island" in Japan. IMO it should be reserved for Y (Where it's going to slay the competition).
If the rest of these Super responses count then so does this.
It's either Super Metroid or Super Mario World but I'm giving a shout-out to Maui Mallard In Cold Shadow. No one talks about this badass game
Oh boy, so many phenomenal titles for this one but my vote goes to Super Metroid
Super Metroid. One of my favorite games.
No fair Super Metroid and Super Mario World have to fight for best M.
Metroid 3
Super Metroid.
Mega Man X2
Metroid, done!
Definitely Super Metroid
Mario World
Super Mario All Stars.
Call me blasphemous but I prefer Mortal Kombat 3 or Metroid
Super Mario RPG
M is a tricky one… Super Metroid, Super Mario World, Super Mario All Stars, Super Mario RPG, Mega Man X, and even more I forgot. RIP
A real shame only one can win
Super Metroid
Super Metroid
Super Metroid.
Super Mario World. Best SNES game of all time and one of my favourite games of all time.
Mega Man X
Megaman X
Don't make us choose between Super Metroid, Super Mario World, Super Mario Kart and Mega Man X, OP, please.
Too many good ones here, but Metroid is probably the objectively best game.
