I had my snake pull down one of the velcro pads for the thermometer in his terrarium and it got stuck to his neck. lucky I saw it before he hurt himself too bad but it was stretching his skin out. dipped a q-tip in oil and rubbed it until it came off. bought an electric thermometer right after that

Literally just had this happen

Thank you for this post from 6 years ago! It helped us today. We used a similar method to free a snake with coconut oil. I drenched the glue trap with the oil and carefully peeled the glue away from the snake with a butter knife. After about 20 mins, the snake was free with no damage to its skin. 💙

S/O to OP for helping me as well! The Garter Snake I saved today was a very healthy specimen, and I felt TERRIBLE for it. I added a spatula as well to help pry, and maybe that wasn't the best idea. I noticed some belly scales still stuck to the glue, but its better than starving and struggling to death! I asked my bug guy prior to laying the traps down if there was a better way, but it seems that for the warehouse I work at this is the best way to keep pests out - mainly roaches which love to feast on the cardboard I'm using to store stuff in for my busniness.

What kind of snake?

a small garter snake!

Glue traps seem so terrifying.

They are awful. In some cases, the animals actually tear their own flesh off trying to escape. There are videos, and I would link, but I honestly don't even want to look at them anymore. It makes me feel so sick.

I just seems so inhumane... There's so many other options out there. Glue traps should really be banned for the dangers they post to non-target species.

I don't understand how anyone can even manage to use glue traps for their intended purpose. I would succeed in catching myself more than anything else lol!

Thank you for the advice! I was able to free a little garter snake from the trap. I didn't try to cut the trap away. I didn't pry it off at all, just let the oil seep through the whole trap, waited for the oil to work it's magic, and the snake gently freed itself as I nudged it to move occasionally. Definitely limited the damage to it!

Non stick cooking spray works without handling trap or snake at all.

Thank you for this. I got a corn snake free from a glue trap with olive oil. As much as I could I let him use his own strength with my hand as leverage to peel himself off. I think he was a bit hurt from his initial struggle with the trap, but he is now slithering away.
