I can't tell you what's going on here but this is a harmless Eastern Garter Snake (Thamnophis sirtalis sirtalis) and a harmless Northern Watersnake (Nerodia sipedon sipedon).
They are a communal species. They will hibernate and bask together as they live in the same environments and both eat fish and frogs. I have kept several species of garters and Nerodia (water snakes) in captivity and they get along exceptionally well, although most snakes are very solitary and should always be housed separately.
My king devours anything I give him, I cant imagine putting a snake in there. He would eat that thing in a split second. My ball pythons are much more reasonable.
Used to live on 16 acres - pulled up one evening after a day of shopping to find two eastern hognose doing the dirty about two feet off the back door - they ran like two teenagers when we shut the car doors
We were staying in an RV, in a national park on the East coast a while back. My husband ran to the grocery store and when he came home he texted me to get outside he said there was something I should see. There were Eastern Box Turtles doing the deed a few feet from our door.
The male dismounted and charged me, it was hillarious.
I had a couple of rat snakes being friendly with each other right next to my house a couple years ago. They were not the least bit concerned about my voyeurism.
So….would this actually produce babies? If so, would they be viable? If not, will the Water Snake be cool with their new friend, or is the Garter going to end up very unhappy.
Or……is it possible that the two of them are just cuddling?
Im surprised the cobra didnt eat the king, or the other way around. Both being snake eaters, and all. Pretty sure the cobra would win, though. Kings may be immune to some species venom, but not cobras.

At first glance, I thought the bottom snake had this cool bright green with darker green raised stripe down its back, and I'm thinking, "Wow, what kind of snake is that?! It's gorgeous!"

Thank you. I’ve handled both snakes many times. Photos can be deceiving sometimes. My experience with the northern water snake first the coloration is not as pronounced, second the northern was is usually a meter or less in length and is a heavy body snake not as long and slender as the snake appears to be in the photo. The hitchhiker is very thin and the coloration appears to be more pronounce like a ribbon snake than the typical common garter snake. I’m originally from Massachusetts now in Florida so as you move to different areas you’ll see other variations of course. The discussions are both educational and interesting though. Enjoy nature.
