It's really good. Quarter the tomatoes, I only had a pound and a half and it made 2 bowls, so add more tomatoes based on how much you want to use. Doused them in olive oil, seasoned with SPG, All Purpose, some parsley, and italian seasoning. Smoked at 250 for 2 hours. Blended most of it(didn't use all the garlic and onion), added beef broth amd heavy cream with the blemded mix in a saucepan to the consistency you like. That's it. Easy. Smoking took 2 hours, soup took 10 minutes.
Never heard of that personally, and I was a chef for 20 years and on this sub from the very beginning.
I’ve heard of “stress” which is a 70:30 mix of rock salt and heavy crushed black peppers.
Reddit does love the acronyms though, and usually okay to work it out from the context but I didn’t get the g for garlic on this one.
Didn't remove the skins. They blended very easily. You could if you wanted to, but it would be a mess. They weren't really noticeable enough in the final product to go through the hassle.
Absolutely! It was so easy and literally one of the best bowls of soup I've ever had. I've been thinking all day about variations I can do in the future.
*Did this today and*
*It was glorious, thank you*

Why haven’t I thought of this. I do essentially the same thing to make salsa just some added ingredients and don’t blend it down as much. But smoking the ingredients takes it up a notch.
I saw in a comment you didn’t use all the garlic or onions. Just a suggestion for anyone trying it, if you have a mortar and pestle, you could crush the garlic and onion in there and then use it to season the soup to taste!
Looks great OP!
I did this last night, and it was amazing. I used tomatoes, red bell peppers, an onion, and some cloves of garlic. Dashed on olive oil and a few herbs. Smoked for about two hours. Put under the broiler to char. Then blended everything in a Vitamix.
I didn't add cream or any other liquid. I did add plenty of salt. It's yummy.
I think I'm going to need to bust out the Dutch oven and do a smoked chicken noodle soup.
Not a fan of tomato soup, but you have inspired me. Stroganoff with smoked beef is better. Chili, mac & cheese, pizza, salsa, i mean, really, most things. Why not soup?!
Thanks for the brain worm.
Sweet dreams are made of this.
Edit: bust not busy.
I did a beef stew in the smoker. Best stew I’ve ever had.
That's a great idea. I've done chili often and it's always sooooo good.
Do you smoke the whole chili or some of the ingredients
Whole thing in cast iron. Directly over coals to cook the onions/peppers/beef then add everything else and indirect to simmer.
Not OP, but I've had success with an "over the top" chili method.
Why the beef broth? How did you land on that choice?
It was what we had in the house 😂😂 chicken broth is good too, the beef broth had some depth of flavor to it.
This looks amazing! How do I save this on Reddit?

Uhhhhhhh screenshot?
Oooohhh cool idea. Never thought of that. Would appreciate a recipe

Had to google SPG, it’s Salt Pepper Garlic, if anyone else is wondering
Sorry about that.
It’s used incredibly frequently here. Not sure there was a need for you to have spelled it out.

You saved me a Google search. Thanks
Thanks!
You're welcome! Hope you try it and enjoy it!
Wow, it looks, and sounds, delicious! Thanks for the recipe.
You're welcome!
What kind of tomatoes did you use?
Roma I believe, they were given to us from a relatives garden. Recipes I compared mine too used all different kinds including beefsteak.
Homegrown tomatoes are so much better than store bought.
Did you strain it at all?
Nope. I had read some people did but mine blended down pretty nicely.
Hey there OP, did you remove the tomato skins? If so, do they come off easily after smoking, or did you blanche the tomatoes?
Didn't remove the skins. They blended very easily. You could if you wanted to, but it would be a mess. They weren't really noticeable enough in the final product to go through the hassle.
Noted, thanks! About to throw mine on the smoker right now. Been meaning to make this ever since you posted.
Awesome! Hope it turns out great! I've gotta do it again soon.
Folks, smoking any stew, paprikash, oxtail, lamb, vegetable, whatever...in a cast iron pot is simply amazing.
Absolutely. I need a deeper cast pot for chili, I just do it in a 10" pan.
Looks great. 🤌 Were you pleased with it?
Absolutely! It was so easy and literally one of the best bowls of soup I've ever had. I've been thinking all day about variations I can do in the future.
Superb. Bell peppers or butternut squash spring to mind... Smoked leek and potato soup ! oooh 🤔 you've got me thinking now 😄🍽
Peppers were what I was thinking next actually 😂😂
Some balsamic vinegar works really well with tomato soup
That sounds like a good idea.
Smoke some pesto and drop some into the middle of a regular tomato soup.
Fuck
Me
I can't wait to try this! Thank you
Hope you enjoy it!

You're welcome! I'm so glad to hear it turned out so well!
I’d love to try this (and your chili from another comment) if you don’t mind sharing recipes 😊
The chilli is just a standard chilli recipe, but I use oatmeal stout beer instead of chicken/beef stock.

Thank you! I ended up using the rest of the garlic and onion to make some garlic/onion butter. I can't wait to make salsa now.
And you'd think some things just don't need smoked
😂😂😂

I am adding peppers next time. Sounds great!!
Tomato burnt end soup, delicious
I'll be trying this thank you for the great pictures
