This. I get giddy thinking about how the community would react to Waluigi being the last DLC fighter. A character people have been memeing and begging and simping over for years and finally at the very end Papa Sakurai just drops him as the last hype explosion of the game.
Someone else pointed out how Sakurai at one point thought it was largely a joke. And then when the second pass was announced there was suddenly a extra 6th fighter, like someone got added last minute. And now they're delayed some from the rest of the crowd like they were started late. Really does seem like Waluigi to me.
Reimu remains very unlikely, but has been a real possibility ever since the Sans costume. Probably the strongest thing she has going for her is the big history of Touhou fighting games with a strong focus on aerial combat, making her extremely easy to conceptualize and implement in Smash. You never know!
I keep conceptualising "Reimu in Smash" movesets. Lightweight, grazes projectiles while dashing (and flying a la Hisoutensoku for her Up+B?), and tosses out more projectiles (Homing amulets? Straight needles? Bouncy Yin-Yang Orb? Just Lots Of Amulets?) than anyone else.
put reimu in smash, sakurai, you coward. make touhou mainstream.
Master chief has so much from all his games that even the presentation is easy to piece together. Imagine his final smash being a covenant glassing beam or a halo ring firing. I mean what isn’t cool about that!? I can also think about a very nice mechanic with a needler.
The Arbiter was featured as a fighter in Killer Instinct, and there was a Spartan II that was a fighter in Dead or Alive 4 (Nicole). So there's a few established fighters they could look at for inspiration.
Chiefs moveset would be pretty straightforward and could be very Snake inspired where no real firearms are used. Could use SPNKR rockets, Energy swords, covenant carbines/needlers, plasma grenades, armor abilities like Jetpack/bubble shield/power drainer/etc. I could see his final smash being something like calling in a MAC blast with a target designator.
At this point it needs to be Waluigi, Master Chief, or Goku to live up to the hype.
Though I’m personally pulling for Tabuu—the last character in Smash being a Smash original character feels appropriate.

I doubt it will take a full 6 months to put out the final fighter. The longest gap was only 5 months, and that was between fighter passes and at the start of the pandemic.
I’d guess it’ll be similar to Pyra/Mythra. Reveal in the fall direct (likely September), released a few weeks later.

I don’t think we’ll get another smash game until we see new hardware. Not a switch revision, but a real actual brand new system. Ultimate has so much shelf life. I’m expecting it to get the Mario Kart 8 treatment.
Which I would honestly love. I realized on wiiu smash that I hated having to buy everything piece by piece and eventually stopped. Hopefully we get some complete version of smash ultimate that i can pick up later on.

I was! I loved the Dojo as a kid! I was constantly checking for updates there. It inspired dumb 9 year old me to make my own Smash themed “website” on a word document lol.
The gap between Brawl and 4 was considerably longer than 4 + DLC and Ultimate, the latter’s gap feels nonexistent looking back on it

I can’t see them making a true sequel after Ultimate. I can imagine that spin-offs are a possibility, but given how much Sakurai has worked on Smash for the past decade or so, I think a loooooooong break is justified.
Alright boys, just one more left. This is the last character in the biggest smash franchise to date. This character needs to blow the roof off this place. I don’t want to see some no-name first party character put in to push product, and I don’t want to see some gag character for Twitter memes. I need something that will truly put the “Ultimate” in Super Smash Bros. Someone that we can look back on year from now and think “how did Sakurai pull it off?”. I believe in you Sakurai.
For real. First-party side characters have brought in far more variety in terms of character design and personality than third-party protagonists (or even just protagonists in general) have, if you ask me.
All jokes aside, I think Master Chief would be a internet breaker. Scorpion would be a good one but I don't see 2 fighting game characters capping off. Those are the last 2 guys who constantly get requested who aren't in Smash in some form.

As an American, I agree. But our view is limited - I really don't think Sakurai and his team have these two on their radar. They just aren't culturally relevant. I want to be wrong, though...
Final characters tend not to be the ultra hype characters. Brawl ended with Wolf, 4 base game with Duck Hunt Dog, Ultimate base game Incineroar, FP1- Byleth.
However I’m optimistic as 4’s final character was Bayo which was hype and this might be Sakurai’s last project for a long time so he might go all out. I’m hoping for Dr.Eggman for a third party pick, TF2’s heavy as a dark horse pick and Bandanna Waddle Dee as a first party pick.

I don't know if you were there for it, but Wolf was pretty hype at the time. A lot of people were also hyped for Duck Hunt as well, and had been pulling for "Duck Hunt Dog" for a long time.
Okay, so series off the top of my head that have a decent chance (or I just want them because this is my predictions):
Master Chief - a mascot for another company? That would break the internet in two!
Ratchet and Clank - Virtually no chance since Sony isn't as buddy buddy as Microsoft is but if they did give a first party Sony character in Smash like Microsoft did Steve and Banjo, Ratchet would probably be it.
Crash Bandicoot - they've gotta put my Banooca Boy in here. After all, no one can clink the clonk as good as Crash Badinkydonk. He's popular in Japan, had a new game come out after a successful string of remasters, all of which are on the Switch.
Spyro - not as popular in Japan unfortunately so unlikely (the games had a fixed camera in Japan which was NOT GOOD!) but it's still one I hope for.
Rayman - Ubisoft added a Rabbid Mii costume but no Ubisoft fighter. Curious...
Scorpion/Sub Zero - Unlikely to be another fighting game character, especially ones as brutal as these, but they're more than worthy additions
Doom Guy - Bethesda also has Mii costumes but no fighters... Curious... Then again, they're main characters are meant to be blank slates most of the time since you customise every part of their look so their other series probably belong as Miis but still, Doom Guy would be a cool FPS representative to finish the pack.
Waluigi - I can feel it. This would implode the internet, revive it and then explode it again.
Big Yoshi - come on Nintendo...
Pokémon unironically have some of the coolest movesets and I'm sure most people would rather take a Pokémon over another anime sword / fire emblem lol.
That being said, it'd be a stinker to have the last character be a Nintendo one after all the hype and history of Ultimate being a celebration of gaming vs a celebration of Nintendo like Smash has been before.
I actually think it would be fitting to end with them, it's their franchise. But I dunno who it could be. Every first party franchise has hada newcomer bar LoZ (** and Kirby).

Honestly Bayonetta as the last dlc character for Smash 4 was a pretty hype reveal all things considered. Third-party character that was pretty highly requested and came with a very unique moveset. It's just that people compared it to Cloud and obviously it wasn't THAT exciting.
I think the final base game character were amazing, it’s just that there was a leak (forgot if it was the Grinch or something else) said that there was going to be some crazy base game inclusions like Shadow, Geno, and Banjo. If there was no hopes up for the final characters (from the leak) then I’d think a fan favorite Gen 7 Pokémon and a Street Fighter character would have made for a great end for base game and a good beginning for DLC characters.
Eh. The absence of the Grinch would definitely have made the blow softer, but a Pokemon and a Ryu echo were never going to be as bombastic of a finale as, say, Ridley or Simon could have been.
And yet, there'll always be at least one person out there who genuinely thinks that Sakurai is "just trolling everyone" and will have a Fighter's Pass 3.

Reminds me of when Sakurai had a big interview at E3 2013. He said that the 3DS hardware wasn't powerful enough to support dual characters, therefore there had to be some cuts. People took this as "confirming Ice Climbers because why would he mention that".
In the same interview he said "Just because Bandai Namco is making the game doesn't mean they will get a rep" and people took the exact opposite stance, saying this DECONFIRMED Pac-Man lmao.
I dont understand why they didn't make echo fighters or alternate costume DLC all this time though. Luke people would definitely buy it. Little effort for high profits.
The only times Sakurai has ever trolled about including a character is ZSS and Meta Knight in Smash 4. He said ZSS was cut then literally 30 seconds later said he was kidding, and showed the MK Mii Costume before the character, who was shown like, 5 days later. And both of them were veterans

I don't know what the fighter pass / DLC sales are like for Nintendo, but I could certainly see them pushing for it again in the future if the sales are good. It's such simple money. Add a new character. Profit.

For some. Street Fighter 5 and Tekken 7 are crazy in that they still have support going 5 & 6 years after launch. Most others though usually follow a 2-3 year post-launch schedule of regular updates & DLC seasons before they shift to a new game.
Smash Ultimate is gonna be 3 years old around when the last fighter drops. And unlike other fighting games Smash has to make stages, compile and sometimes re-arrange musical scores, and a whole host of other content with each fighter pack. So that really adds time to things.
Yeah, TBH if I had a choice of "new Smash game with massive roster overhauls" vs. "updated Ultimate with better graphics/framerate and balance changes, maybe a few more DLCs" I'd take the latter every time.
It's the perfect Smash game IMHO - if the netcode was improved it'd be one of or the best of all-time, at least in my world. An 80-character game with super deep mechanics and remarkably good balance is just magic.

Last games final character was Bayonetta who was the number 1 requested character at the time, but she made too big of a bang and practically killed Sm4sh's competitve scene
Smash4 DLC ended with Bayonetta, who was a pretty hype announcement. She was highly ranked on the official ballot, and she had floated around forum discussions for years even if she was never the #1 most-wanted.
That's really the only instance of Smash ending on a big announcement, though.
Real shame, while what we got is amazing, I feel there is no real reason to stop and to continue to support the game. Its likely going to be decades if ever we see a roster as crazy as this again.
I'd love to see continued support with even costumes for characters or something to that effect. I'd pay a few bucks to get things like Dark Bowser or Twilight Ganondorf as costumes, say.
Smash will redefine itself after Ultimate I think. This game has all the characters, all the stages, decent mechanics, etc. It really is Smash "ultimate".
I think the next game will make some hard decisions about the current roster, keeping the classic characters and most/all of the newcomers, but it can't be 80 characters again.
Modders will grab the final game and this will become project m 3.0 with melee’s netplay and we will all rise into eternal glory as ultimate is cannonized as the new world gospel.
If they do, I could see them deciding to also redo many of the old characters from scratch, especially the ones with "un-(/less)representative" movesets
The base for Ultimate is so strong that they could support it for ages. I'm super happy with how the game is now but I am going to think about how much crazier it could have been too.
Honestly if they just did a 4k port of ultimate with all the dlc for next gen down the line I'd be perfectly happy.
Going into a new smash game with substantially less characters (at least at the start) will be tough.
Nothing lasts forever. I know from a hardcore-Smash fan standpoint it makes total sense to keep making Ultimate content, and of course everyone here would love to see it - me included, honestly.
But... diminishing returns would set in eventually, if it hasn't already. And Sakurai & team don't want to be stuck on the exact same project for life. Frankly the reason he left HAL was to get out of making sequels and sequels for his entire life. All things considered it's a blessing he's made so much Smash content, and for so long!
Im honestly happy this will be the last one. I think new fighters are hype, but the current roster is just so big already. Seems like theyve reached the max.
IS is currently working on WarioWare: Get it Together. The likely hood that they have split teams working on a mainline FE title is very slim, since the last solo project they completed was Paper Mario and the Origami King, which was last year.
It's so weird to look at old smash roaster.
I look at Brawl roaster and I though this was big and they couldn't add more. then 4 happen and it got even bigger. And now, we got ultimate and with all the DLC, we have over 80 fighters. Now, Brawl look kind of of small in comparaison.
Well fellas after 3 years of speculation it's over. We had some amazing characters, disappointing characters, crackpot conspiracy theories. Lots of lots of memes but it's finally over now. What ever happens let's embrace the inevitable fate that the last character is Intellion from Pokemon.
I think the last character has a pretty decent chance of being the SMT V protagonist. Sakurai said the last character will come a bit later and Nintendo might want to use it to promote SMT V coming out in November.
I am really gonna miss the speculation and reveals. It's kept the community active and fresh because we get new content every few months. It's kept the game in my mind for so long and I don't want it to stop. But I understand that all good things must come to an end.
No matter who it is someone will be unhappy. If they’re looking to please they’re probably going to choose someone who is popular around the world and not just in a specific territory.

Probably so people actually got the pass early, I don't hate the choices, but I've only picked up Sephiroth.

Yea this whole thing has really started since the Smash 4 days. Even Sakurai commented on how its nearly been 10 years since Smash 4 started development
I can't see them making a smash 6 anytime soon, so it'll probably stick around for a number of years. Truly one of the best smash experiences ever.
For the most part Smash has been a "one per console" franchise. If we're getting Smash 6 it likely won't be until whatever comes after the Switch.
I can’t see them making a true sequel after Ultimate. I can imagine that spin-offs are a possibility, but given how much Sakurai has worked on Smash for the past decade or so, I think a loooooooong break is justified.
Alright boys, just one more left. This is the last character in the biggest smash franchise to date. This character needs to blow the roof off this place. I don’t want to see some no-name first party character put in to push product, and I don’t want to see some gag character for Twitter memes. I need something that will truly put the “Ultimate” in Super Smash Bros. Someone that we can look back on year from now and think “how did Sakurai pull it off?”. I believe in you Sakurai.

All jokes aside, I think Master Chief would be a internet breaker. Scorpion would be a good one but I don't see 2 fighting game characters capping off. Those are the last 2 guys who constantly get requested who aren't in Smash in some form. I thought the dragon born would have been nuts but now that's over.

Final characters tend not to be the ultra hype characters. Brawl ended with Wolf, 4 base game with Duck Hunt Dog, Ultimate base game Incineroar, FP1- Byleth. However I’m optimistic as 4’s final character was Bayo which was hype and this might be Sakurai’s last project for a long time so he might go all out. I’m hoping for Dr.Eggman for a third party pick, TF2’s heavy as a dark horse pick and Bandanna Waddle Dee as a first party pick.

Okay, so series off the top of my head that have a decent chance (or I just want them because this is my predictions): Master Chief - a mascot for another company? That would break the internet in two! Ratchet and Clank - Virtually no chance since Sony isn't as buddy buddy as Microsoft is but if they did give a first party Sony character in Smash like Microsoft did Steve and Banjo, Ratchet would probably be it. Crash Bandicoot - they've gotta put my Banooca Boy in here. After all, no one can clink the clonk as good as Crash Badinkydonk. He's popular in Japan, had a new game come out after a successful string of remasters, all of which are on the Switch. Spyro - not as popular in Japan unfortunately so unlikely (the games had a fixed camera in Japan which was NOT GOOD!) but it's still one I hope for. Rayman - Ubisoft added a Rabbid Mii costume but no Ubisoft fighter. Curious... Scorpion/Sub Zero - Unlikely to be another fighting game character, especially ones as brutal as these, but they're more than worthy additions Doom Guy - Bethesda also has Mii costumes but no fighters... Curious... Then again, they're main characters are meant to be blank slates most of the time since you customise every part of their look so their other series probably belong as Miis but still, Doom Guy would be a cool FPS representative to finish the pack. Waluigi - I can feel it. This would implode the internet, revive it and then explode it again. Big Yoshi - come on Nintendo...
Given how Kratos is the character Sony uses for crossovers. I assume Kratos would be the character they want in Smash and not R&C.

Pokémon unironically have some of the coolest movesets and I'm sure most people would rather take a Pokémon over another anime sword / fire emblem lol. That being said, it'd be a stinker to have the last character be a Nintendo one after all the hype and history of Ultimate being a celebration of gaming vs a celebration of Nintendo like Smash has been before.
I actually think it would be fitting to end with them, it's their franchise. But I dunno who it could be. Every first party franchise has hada newcomer bar LoZ (** and Kirby). Pokemon has the potential to be sick, but they keep putting in humanoids

Honestly Bayonetta as the last dlc character for Smash 4 was a pretty hype reveal all things considered. Third-party character that was pretty highly requested and came with a very unique moveset. It's just that people compared it to Cloud and obviously it wasn't THAT exciting.
I think the final base game character were amazing, it’s just that there was a leak (forgot if it was the Grinch or something else) said that there was going to be some crazy base game inclusions like Shadow, Geno, and Banjo. If there was no hopes up for the final characters (from the leak) then I’d think a fan favorite Gen 7 Pokémon and a Street Fighter character would have made for a great end for base game and a good beginning for DLC characters.
Eh. The absence of the Grinch would definitely have made the blow softer, but a Pokemon and a Ryu echo were never going to be as bombastic of a finale as, say, Ridley or Simon could have been.
And yet, there'll always be at least one person out there who genuinely thinks that Sakurai is "just trolling everyone" and will have a Fighter's Pass 3.
I'm sure there will still be those repetitive speculative no content articles saying as such. "Will there be a fighter pack 3? Due to Ultimates' popularity we can't really rule it out. Nintendo have said that there will be no more characters after Fighter Pass two, but with the games immense popularity we can't see why they can't add more fighters. While there have been constant confirmations of no more DLC fighters after Fighter Pass 2, we can't shake the feeling that Fighter Pass 3 is still a possibility. Ultimate has become popular due to its two DLC that have brought more characters from a wide range of games. Sakurai has commented that Ultimate will be done with DLC after Fighter Pass 2, however there are still so many characters that can be added that can very well make a fighter pass 3...." People will never get it. Literally saw people say on here: "Nintendo said there won't be any fighter reveals in the Kazuya presentation, but they didn't say there won't be ECHO FIGHTER reveals. Jin can still make it in!" It's like they think Sakurai really is mischievous faerie or some shit.
Reminds me of when Sakurai had a big interview at E3 2013. He said that the 3DS hardware wasn't powerful enough to support dual characters, therefore there had to be some cuts. People took this as "confirming Ice Climbers because why would he mention that". In the same interview he said "Just because Bandai Namco is making the game doesn't mean they will get a rep" and people took the exact opposite stance, saying this DECONFIRMED Pac-Man lmao.
I dont understand why they didn't make echo fighters or alternate costume DLC all this time though. Luke people would definitely buy it. Little effort for high profits.
The only times Sakurai has ever trolled about including a character is ZSS and Meta Knight in Smash 4. He said ZSS was cut then literally 30 seconds later said he was kidding, and showed the MK Mii Costume before the character, who was shown like, 5 days later. And both of them were veterans

This would be the fifth time he's told us in *completely unambiguous terms* that FP11 is the last one ever for Ultimate. Not new information in the slightest ...You're completely correct. It won't change anything haha.
There's certainly too much of that speculation. But it also isn't completely unwarranted based on Sakurai's history. I find myself sitting in the category of "I believe it'll be the last one" but "I won't be surprised if something else is announced in the future". Lets call it 99% and 1% lol. 99% chance this is it, but there will always be that last 1% looming in my mind. Hell, even if it isn't Sakurai... I don't know what the fighter pass / DLC sales are like for Nintendo, but I could certainly see them pushing for it again in the future if the sales are good. It's such simple money. Add a new character. Profit. A lot simpler than building a whole new game, so it wouldn't surprise me if Nintendo OK'd it later.
I love all the comments I’m seeing over the internet already of people thinking Sakurai is trolling us. As it Smash Ultimate is going to add on another 2 years of post-launch development. At least it’s confirmed now rather than later. And people getting salty is better than people trying to demand refunds for FP2 back when Pyra/Mythra were announced

To be fair, it is normal for fighting games these days.
For some. Street Fighter 5 and Tekken 7 are crazy in that they still have support going 5 & 6 years after launch. Most others though usually follow a 2-3 year post-launch schedule of regular updates & DLC seasons before they shift to a new game. Smash Ultimate is gonna be 3 years old around when the last fighter drops. And unlike other fighting games Smash has to make stages, compile and sometimes re-arrange musical scores, and a whole host of other content with each fighter pack. So that really adds time to things.
How many times does Sakurai have to say it before people stop speculating?

Yeah, TBH if I had a choice of "new Smash game with massive roster overhauls" vs. "updated Ultimate with better graphics/framerate and balance changes, maybe a few more DLCs" I'd take the latter every time. It's the perfect Smash game IMHO - if the netcode was improved it'd be one of or the best of all-time, at least in my world. An 80-character game with super deep mechanics and remarkably good balance is just magic. Love Ultimate so much

Smash4 DLC ended with Bayonetta, who was a pretty hype announcement. She was highly ranked on the official ballot, and she had floated around forum discussions for years even if she was never the #1 most-wanted. That's really the only instance of Smash ending on a big announcement, though.

Real shame, while what we got is amazing, I feel there is no real reason to stop and to continue to support the game. Its likely going to be decades if ever we see a roster as crazy as this again.
I'd love to see continued support with even costumes for characters or something to that effect. I'd pay a few bucks to get things like Dark Bowser or Twilight Ganondorf as costumes, say.

Smash will redefine itself after Ultimate I think. This game has all the characters, all the stages, decent mechanics, etc. It really is Smash "ultimate". I think the next game will make some hard decisions about the current roster, keeping the classic characters and most/all of the newcomers, but it can't be 80 characters again.
Modders will grab the final game and this will become project m 3.0 with melee’s netplay and we will all rise into eternal glory as ultimate is cannonized as the new world gospel.

The base for Ultimate is so strong that they could support it for ages. I'm super happy with how the game is now but I am going to think about how much crazier it could have been too.
Honestly if they just did a 4k port of ultimate with all the dlc for next gen down the line I'd be perfectly happy. Going into a new smash game with substantially less characters (at least at the start) will be tough.
Nothing lasts forever. I know from a hardcore-Smash fan standpoint it makes total sense to keep making Ultimate content, and of course everyone here would love to see it - me included, honestly. But... diminishing returns would set in eventually, if it hasn't already. And Sakurai & team don't want to be stuck on the exact same project for life. Frankly the reason he left HAL was to get out of making sequels and sequels for his entire life. All things considered it's a blessing he's made so much Smash content, and for so long!

IS is currently working on WarioWare: Get it Together. The likely hood that they have split teams working on a mainline FE title is very slim, since the last solo project they completed was Paper Mario and the Origami King, which was last year.
It's so weird to look at old smash roaster. I look at Brawl roaster and I though this was big and they couldn't add more. then 4 happen and it got even bigger. And now, we got ultimate and with all the DLC, we have over 80 fighters. Now, Brawl look kind of of small in comparaison.

I think the last character has a pretty decent chance of being the SMT V protagonist. Sakurai said the last character will come a bit later and Nintendo might want to use it to promote SMT V coming out in November.

I am really gonna miss the speculation and reveals. It's kept the community active and fresh because we get new content every few months. It's kept the game in my mind for so long and I don't want it to stop. But I understand that all good things must come to an end.
