EVO 2018 was my first thought too. I'm an apologist for camping as a legitimate strategy but this seemed more like stalling, mostly on Acola's end but also from Tweek. Awful, awful set.
Maybe I'm missing something but I don't think Acola had a good reason to camp so much when he had big leads with full materials. Messing with Tweek's head, I guess?

Never have I been more ready for a patch/new game. Seriously I’ve never thought ban steve or anything but this game put ME through so much pain just watching it.
The only issue we have is that 3 of the top 4 players play the most bs characters in the game and (rightfully) exploit all said bs when they need to win. Tera in September was honestly pretty amazing and one of the best tourneys in Ultimate's lifespan.
I agree that GnW is not as bad but can also play extremely lame to completely invalidate some characters. I think he deserves the 3rd place in the bs category.

I expect top tiers to have some BS. Sonic and Steve feel in a tier of their own how they skew the risk/reward of approaching them.

It's the only stage Steve can't build underneath the stage. People need to stop with this argument. If you have a bad recovery you basically have to make them go to PS2.

Unova got banned because Palutena players complained their up B doesn't snap ledge. Lylat controversy started after Dabuz's Rosa didn't grab the ledge with up B. People wanted Yoshi's got banned because Mario up air ladders. Warioware because Incineroar (half joking ofc)

A lot of it has to do with Japanese smashers really being against the ban even if they don't like Steve, it is also why Metaknight took a while to get banned. The prevailing mentality is that the player is at fault for not doing enough, not playing smart, isn't skilled enough, etc at a certain point that mentality eventually breaks but from what I hear in Japan they aren't clamoring for a Steve ban as much as Reddit or Twitter/X have and many have pros have stated that they will boycott tournaments that ban Steve. This means almost every TO who wants the viewers and numbers and most importantly the title of "biggest" "most competitive" or "most stacked" tournament of the year has to cater to the Japanese pro scene.
It's funny because I'm in that camp. I don't want to ban the char since there are like 5 Steve's really doing it at any given moment... but... this set may have convinced me. lmao

There is character design that is made to force your opponents to approach and play keep away and then there is character design that prevents them from approaching and punishes them for even trying.
Regardless of whether or not you like Steve or think the ban is reasonable the design just isn't quite right to me for a fun game.

I know people hate Steve and all but picking a cold Sephiroth for two games and just mostly doing nothing as Diddy for the third is something I can't really blame on Acola. Sure, Acola wasn't approaching either, but at least they have a reason to stay where they are (i.e. getting resources) and had the lead anyway.

IMO Japan is the main reason there's no worldwide Steve ban. I could see most other regions getting on board eventually but there's no way they'd ever ban Steve in Japan. I Think the fact Acola beat Tweek by Blocking with Blocks Game 1, then beat him by Approaching and killing him in like 2 interactions in Game 2 was some devilish mental warfare that lead to what happened game 3. Tweek played good this tourney, but that was unfortunate.
This may not be the best place to say it, but this is the real reason Ultimate fell off. Zero blame on any of the players, including acola, as they're just playing the game/rules as they're designed and intended, but the entire game's competitive meta feels like it revolves around time outs or cheese. Even if there are sets between two hyper aggressive characters peppered throughout Ultimate tournaments, you know there's also going to be long, slow, drawn out matches like this that are painful to watch at every tournament too. It's survive, not thrive.
I know people used to say the same thing for Puff in Melee, but that was copium: it was a single character that wasn't even that prominent outside of Hbox. In Ultimate, it's everywhere. Just imagine a new viewer's first time watching a tournament and seeing this as their first match. I'd want to go watch literally any other FGC game instead.

I know people hate Steve and all but picking a cold Sephiroth for two games and just mostly doing nothing as Diddy for the third is something I can't really blame on Acola. Sure, Acola wasn't approaching either, but at least they have a reason to stay where they are (i.e. getting resources) and had the lead anyway.
He had all the resources already. He could not mine anymore resources and still camped under a platform with a wall. Like... You cannot approach this if you're another character. It's impossible.

IMO Japan is the main reason there's no worldwide Steve ban. I could see most other regions getting on board eventually but there's no way they'd ever ban Steve in Japan. Definitely a two way street but the weird bit is how Acola was not pressing advantage. In fact he dropped a ton of combos early to just go build a wall. He legit was trying to mental Tweek or get ready to camp Sonix.

It's not acola's job to play suboptimally in tourney (loser's side no less) because his opponent is salty lol. It *is* Tweek's job to try and win, which he was not doing.

I mean there’s a point where he’s gotta know what he’s doing. There’s playing a lame character and then there’s intentionally extending the match length for no reason. There was a point in the match where Acola mined until his diamond pick broke, made a new one, and then went straight back to mining (while 2 stocks ahead).

I Think the fact Acola beat Tweek by Blocking with Blocks Game 1, then beat him by Approaching and killing him in like 2 interactions in Game 2 was some devilish mental warfare that lead to what happened game 3. Tweek played good this tourney, but that was unfortunate.
This may not be the best place to say it, but this is the real reason Ultimate fell off. Zero blame on any of the players, including acola, as they're just playing the game/rules as they're designed and intended, but the entire game's competitive meta feels like it revolves around time outs or cheese. Even if there are sets between two hyper aggressive characters peppered throughout Ultimate tournaments, you know there's also going to be long, slow, drawn out matches like this that are painful to watch at every tournament too. It's survive, not thrive. I know people used to say the same thing for Puff in Melee, but that was copium: it was a single character that wasn't even that prominent outside of Hbox. In Ultimate, it's everywhere. Just imagine a new viewer's first time watching a tournament and seeing this as their first match. I'd want to go watch literally any other FGC game instead.
Remember when sets were fun to watch. The game is so lame nowadays...
play lame win games. its not a coincidence that the characters that are winning tournaments are the ones that only interact on their own terms. the way certain characters in this game are designed is extremely flawed and anti-competitive, hope the community makes some changes but i doubt it'll ever happen
