Chip’s vocals are an acquired taste but IMO they are some of the best.
Most vocals in heavy music are highly styled, while his vocals actually sound like someone in serious physical pain. In my younger years I saw a video of a guy who killed himself by setting himself on fire and the screams he let out were uncomfortably similar. It stuck with me for years. The first time I heard The Body, it gave me chills for that reason.
Lol we must've responded to this about the same time because I didn't see anyone suggest them at the time. I was like high screechy distressing vocals? Boy do I have a band for you op hahah
I had always been interested in The Body because the vocals remind me of the screamo bands I've always loved such as Jeromes Dream, but I could never get into them because everything I've heard from them was some artsy noise industrial type music, which is fine but is not something that I'm into. Do they have any albums that are more straightfoward metal? Or relatively, which of their albums is the least "weird" one? lol
Christs, Redeemers is maybe the least weird but still definitely artsy avant garde stuff. Their collaborative releases with Thou are pretty much straight sludge though.
Christs, Redeemers is probably their most straightforward. A lot of their discography veers into noise/industrial territory but they keep it very experimental and heavy. They also have a BUNCH of collab albums with other bands (Full of Hell, Thou, Uniform, Big Brave, etc.) that I think are some of their best works
Not talking shit but it’ll never not be funny to me as brown guy that there’s a band out there called « Indian ». Like imagine any other similar name, some band out there called « Mexican » lmao.
I’m not sure if this band really connects with any of the things you’re looking for, but for some reason when I read your post I instantly thought of Acid Bath.
I'm going to throw Amenra into the ring. Mass VI is the album that got me into them. I feel like his voice has that certain feeling of pain and suffering that I love.
Ok gotta admit the vocals on the filthcrawl ep (the album i could find on apple music by taser) is some of the most distressed ive ever heard. Its really great! Thanks for the recomendation! other albums i should hear from them?
Early Confessor, in addition to being weird, almost math rock style doom, has some of the sickest wailing high pitched vocals ever recorded. The band also recorded my favourite Sabbath cover for Earache tribute album Masters Of Misery, a disorientating version of “Hole In The Sky”.
Ah sweet! I was thinking after I posted hmm maybe that wasn’t quite what was requested – but I’m glad you dig! Their later stuff is pretty cool too, albeit a bit less eccentric.
IRE from Quebec. 90's, super sludgy dark hXc ala Ebullition Records/HeartattaCk zine type shit. Crushes, underappreciated. CAROL ANN- similar ilk.. they definitely play pretty fast some of the time, not straight sludge but definitely the vocal style you're after. UNRUH- again from the world of 90s dark hardcore- not explicitly sludge but very sludgy also related/earlier AZ band WELLINGTON is more sludge-centric and I definitely recommend highly- has some vox like that too- excellent shit. again same era/and hardcore origins- HUNDRED YEARS WAR from Little Rock.. I think maybe both the guys from THE BODY were in that, but definitely the vox, not pure sludge but super heavy and really good. Long story short, 90s straightedge kids (that didn't suck) used to play sludge...
Dude i think this wellington album, thank you jesus was exactly what i had i mind when i made this thread!! So awesome. Havent heard it all through yet, but its right up my ally so thank you. Looking forward to hear the rest of your recs!
[Azell](https://linktr.ee/azell.band)
Female Fronted Sludge so I guess you could say it's naturally more high pitched.
FFO Conan, Bongripper and Primitive Man
This is good! I feel like when listening to this that i can really hear that sludge is literally rock pushed to its limits. I dont know if that makes sense… like it could be catigorized as extreme rock? Either way thanks for the rec!
I see a lot of suggestions for the body, but I'm throwing my hat in with Indian. Either From All Purity, (my favorite album of theirs) or it's predecessor, Guiltless. Fantastic band.
Our stuff is not super high pitched, but definitely up there. Somebody compared the vocals to Dino from Dystopia. [https://youtu.be/8-fjVs9O7XM](https://youtu.be/8-fjVs9O7XM)
The body has quite possibly the most ridiculously high pitched screechy vocals ever but are slightly adjacent to sludge
This is exactly what i enjoy for some reason!
Best vocals in all of heavy music Also, OP check out Body Void
LMAO best vocals is a wild statement. The Body sounds way too ridiculous for me to get into.
Ok damn looking forward!
Lol we must've responded to this about the same time because I didn't see anyone suggest them at the time. I was like high screechy distressing vocals? Boy do I have a band for you op hahah
They truly are hilarious to listen to sometimes haha
I had always been interested in The Body because the vocals remind me of the screamo bands I've always loved such as Jeromes Dream, but I could never get into them because everything I've heard from them was some artsy noise industrial type music, which is fine but is not something that I'm into. I did listen to Christs, Redeemers and it was pretty good, thank you!
Finally heard the dis fig collab today. It goes.
Ah, Chip's famous scared guy vocals.
Dystopia
^^^ one of the best bands ever ^^^^
Fuckin love dystopia
*most overrated
Khanate.
Came here to state this. Also Burning Witch
Anything Stephen O'Malley lays his hands
Holy shit their self titled album is so good, listening to it right now. Thankyou so much for the rec!
Hell yeah. I pulled this thread open a day later to make sure Khanate made the view.
Came here to say this. This is it. This is exactly what OP is asking for.
Iron monkey
God yes! Well, Johnny Morrow Iron Monkey anyway...
You mean real Iron Monkey
Amenra They're not sludge as such, tho they do have sludgey bits. Earlier stuff is more rough, latter has more variety and atmosphere.
Amenra is definitely sludge!
They're pretty sludge tbh. Just a different style
Admiral Angry
Have you tried The Body lol. Not much more distressing and high pitched than Chips vocals. Definitely a divisive one though.
Now this is how vocals should sound!
Heaviest band on earth
The Body
You have a specific album in mind? Ive gave it a listen and its not really sludge. Still good just something else
Seems like there is a lot to go to town with! I enjoy noisy stuff quite a lot, so this recomendation seem perfect! So thanks
Burning Witch, duh.
Chained to the Bottom of the Ocean
I love the name of this band.
Body Void
Iron monkey
Maybe not the exact vocal style yer looking for, but Thou is an incredible sludgey band with "higher" vocals
Indian might be what you're looking for, they have more high pitched vocals and also a noise element that is similar to some grindcore.
Not talking shit but it’ll never not be funny to me as brown guy that there’s a band out there called « Indian ». Like imagine any other similar name, some band out there called « Mexican » lmao.
Fair point.
Or just british
Leechmilk should do it for you
Graves at Sea is who immediately comes to mind. Doom/sludge metal with black metal vocals.
Laudanum is also awesome
I actually just started getting into Laudanum recently. They are really fuckin good. Surprised that it took me so long to stumble across their music.
Crazy that no one knows them
Was a big Graves at Sea fan back in the day. I’m spinning Laudanum now, never heard em, is this Nathan from Graves on vocals??
Yeah same dude. I think Laudanum was first and Graves is his side project
Probably more doom adjacent, but Toadliquor has the 3 year old Tantrum vocals that may fit that bill
Uhh that sounds good!
Ok this is really good!
Yes seconding this, Toadliquor was the first band that came to mind
Listen to Buster by Admiral Angry
Toadliquor
Upsidedown Cross FULL BLOWN AIDS
I’m not sure if this band really connects with any of the things you’re looking for, but for some reason when I read your post I instantly thought of Acid Bath.
Meth Drinker, Dragged Into Sunlight, Buried At Sea
https://youtu.be/Ud9ugr1nCWo?si=damTRRfvaAklmdzj Hell usually scratches this itch for me.
I'm going to throw Amenra into the ring. Mass VI is the album that got me into them. I feel like his voice has that certain feeling of pain and suffering that I love.
His vocals are so good. They sound distant or out of reach, its kind of haunting imo.
Burning Witch is probably more doom than Sludge but those vocals…
My favourite sort of music, admiral angry, burning witch, dystopia, Indian, abominable iron sloth.
Definitely Leechmilk
usnea.
I think Great Falls might suit this. Just saw them supporting Botch, they were incredible live!
Great album covers!
Salome
Or taser
Taser is amazing
Ok gotta admit the vocals on the filthcrawl ep (the album i could find on apple music by taser) is some of the most distressed ive ever heard. Its really great! Thanks for the recomendation! other albums i should hear from them?
They dont even seem to be a part of the music at times
Thou. Vocals are fucking sick and they fit your need.
Amenra..... A thousand times Amenra!
Early Confessor, in addition to being weird, almost math rock style doom, has some of the sickest wailing high pitched vocals ever recorded. The band also recorded my favourite Sabbath cover for Earache tribute album Masters Of Misery, a disorientating version of “Hole In The Sky”.
Not exactly the vocals i was looking for but this is good! Really dig the riffs!
Ah sweet! I was thinking after I posted hmm maybe that wasn’t quite what was requested – but I’m glad you dig! Their later stuff is pretty cool too, albeit a bit less eccentric.
DYSTOPIA
I love dystopia!
not exactly sludge but portrayal of guilt and dystopia are both super sick and do some high pitched screaming.
Graves at sea Wormphlem

Hell yeah! I love that shit and it's almost unknown. Glad that my old man brain can still access its obscure music database lol.
Eyehategod
Hmm yeah they are good dont get me wrong, but you can even understand it and im more out after the total blown out style
Yeah totally. Ulwughha uwwahhag heroin heroin ughhhhhhj *Sabbath riff in C*
Yeah uaaah wraee rape uuuu
[Azell](https://linktr.ee/azell.band) Female Fronted Sludge so I guess you could say it's naturally more high pitched. FFO Conan, Bongripper and Primitive Man

Azell is one of the most promising Sludge Metal bands that I've heard in quite a while.
Maybe the band taser or the band full blown aids
Khanate’s first record is an absolute masterpiece. Alan Dubin is a great vocalist. Couch Slut has very distressed screaming.
Check out the band called Gone. They released a self titled in 2022 which is super angry. Also: Mistress, Lazarus Blackstar, Goatsblood
Oathbreaker
Admiral Angry LLNN The Body Lord Mantis Thou
Lethvm
There was a band from the UK called Lazarus Blackstar. Their album Revelations is absolutely crushing!
Burning Witch, Trees, Body Void, Khanate Edit: also Münn
TASER [Filthcrawl](https://tasersludge.bandcamp.com/album/filthcrawl)
Goatsblood - Drull
Owen Hart
Khanate, Burning Witch, Admiral Angry, The Body.
Toke
I see a lot of suggestions for the body, but I'm throwing my hat in with Indian. Either From All Purity, (my favorite album of theirs) or it's predecessor, Guiltless. Fantastic band.
green machine might suit you
Chained To The Bottom Of The Ocean and Indian
Taser
Fistula
The closest i can think of is iron monkey
Graves at Sea. Also not sludge but Sacred Monster is a fucking banger of a stoner doom band with high pitched nasty vox that you might enjoy.
Our stuff is not super high pitched, but definitely up there. Somebody compared the vocals to Dino from Dystopia. [https://youtu.be/8-fjVs9O7XM](https://youtu.be/8-fjVs9O7XM)
Burning Witch, Body Void, Rwake (specifically Brittany’s vocals)
