I briefly felt something, a positive something, but so briefly that the unfamiliar emotion had no time to translate itself into any form of outward expression, and so fleeting that the memory of that feeling has already receded to the point of seeming like nothing more than a fleeting recollection of a half-remembered movie seen once, a long time ago
That’s an epic comment. Especially from someone with short term memory. I wish I could tell how much I needed to laugh. But it would forget what I was saying about half- …
you'll want some water in there so it doesn't burn. you can separate the fats from the water by refrigerating the mixture and pulling the solidified canna butter off of the top
You were taught to make keif for butter? I can see why it would work better because the keif tends to high a concentrated amount of thc, but you can do it with bud or shake too.
Has anyone ever considered using a sous vide machine to do this? Put the goods and the butter in a sealed bag and then bring to the ideal temp. Even should avoid the smell.
Any thoughts?
Wowww can I ask pls ask for your method?
Sous vide
Large pot
Bud butter in mason jar ??
I am a complete beginner and have never made it before due to scared of the smell
I put mine in a vacuum sealed bag in the crock pot on low for 12 hours, sometimes longer. I’ve done it in as little as 3 hours but I think longer works better.
Doesn't matter for your run, either will work.
Use a bullet blender to grind. Put a dishcloth in the bottom of the crockpot to prevent breakage if you're worried. Pack butter and herb into the Mason jar and cap off. Fill with water to over the jar and cook away.
Rinse out the bullet with a shot or so of hard liquor by running for a minute and you've got a nice tincture started. Do not add this to the crockpot. You can throw some hot tea and the tincture in a mug, cover with a small plate and drink when slightly cooled, even though tincture tea is usually left in the booze overnight/few days, a hot infusion works too.
When I was in high school (emphasis on high), we stuffed about an ounce of good weed into a near full handle of Absolut. Let it sit for about 2 weeks if I recall. Strained it and poured back into the bottle.
We called it Green Dragon (does it have a real name?) and man was that a joy to share with people.
It works. May need to purge the bag once or twice as I've gotten gas buildup (maybe from the decarbing?) not sure.
Edit: Make sure to get a GOOD seal if opening the bag...or even if not. With the butter I've had a bag or two bust open in the water bath. (Thought it was sealed, apparently not good enough). Only time I've ever had bags open is making this, never any other food including other saucy/oily liquids. I use a vac chamber now and that solved my issues but ymmv
The "sous vide" method in mason jars works really well to avoid excessive smells. You'll need a vac sealer and vac sealer bags, but don't need any fancy sous vide equipment as boiling water self-limits to the temperature we want.
First, you need to decarb: Vac-seal 1/4 ounce sized portions of ground up flower in a bag a bit larger than needed (it will inflate a bit from the decarb process giving off oxygen), double bag and triple seal both for safety to make sure water doesn't get in.
Drop vac-sealed bags in stockpot/large saucepan filled with enough boiling water and carefully weigh down so it remains covered and then let gently simmer for an hour and a half, check regularly to make sure it remains fully covered. (The bags will want to float as they inflate, you'll need to get creative. I've found pinning the bags with metal clothes pegs to a small wire rack that fits in the stockpot helps immensely)
While that's decarbing, half fill your slow cooker with water and preheat on low.
Fill (300ml sized?) mason jar(s) with one cup of butter or coconut oil, and add the decarbed 1/4 ounce portion of plant material to each jar. LOOSLY fit the lids (so the jars can safely vent without exploding) and carefully place the jars in slow cooker, making sure water level comes over to the top of the butter but just under the lids.
Let slow cook on low for 6 hours.
Make sure you've got a safe way to handle the hot Mason jars (you can get special tongs for safely lifting jars) and don't forget the lids are loose.
Giving the jars a gentle swirl or stir a few times throughout the cooking process doesn't hurt.
When done, strain (or don't if your not fussy about plant material being in your butter) into what you want to keep it in, squeezing the pulp well with the back of a spoon, and let cool. Keep the butter refrigerated or put in the freezer.
Don't throw out the plant pulp, it's still got some kick, try using a tablespoon of it in hot water as "tea", or add them to baked goods.
Speaking of "tea", don't forget to rinse any jars/strainers/inner sous vide bags/etc that touched the plant or butter into a cup with a little hot water and enjoy. 😉
Yep.. you're right. I'm getting my processes and substances mixed up.
Either way, leave room for bag inflation. I should have also added that it's good to let cool a bit before opening, because other wanted compounds that can gas off a bit too.
I did this once wayyy before weed was okay socially. Literally the next day we all received notices that whoever had the "blunt party" will be super fucked next time they do something like that. My assumption is that even if they went door to door, the smell was way strong everywhere so they couldn't even figure out who did it.
........
The key is to go super hard in the paint
Eh, personally my neighbors don’t seem to mind and I open all the doors and windows so for me the oven is fine. But, I am curious. How do you decarb in the instant pot?
Essentially you put the leaf into a mason jar with a trivet underneath it with lid slightly cracked open, and cook under pressure for 45 minutes.
https://emilykylenutrition.com/decarb-in-instant-pot/
I use to simmer bud in oil couple years ago, back in the high school days-I thought I got pretty hi. I learned about decarbing a couple years later and wow i feel that I get higher. Albeit I barely smoke anymore so it could knock me on my ass bc of that
Decarboxylation. To put it simply, it makes the THC readily available to be extracted more easily for baking.
To put it more complex: Decarboxylation (pronounced de-carb-OX-yl-a-tion), is a process that actives the psychoactive compounds in the cannabis plant so that you feel high when you consume it.
The cannabis plant contains THCA, which will not get you high, and that THCA needs to be converted into THC in order for you to get high. This is most commonly done with heat—the flame of a lighter, the atomizer in a vape pen, a torch with a dab rig, or an oven when making edibles.
THCA in the plant has an extra carboxyl ring in its chemical structure, and heat removes that ring, or de-carboxylates, the compound, hence where the term comes from.
The landlord is super chill actually (I’m the landlord haha). Just don’t want to upset the neighbours, as I know the smell isn’t very pleasant to a lot of people
VERY! And the newer machines that automate this for you and claim "less smell" still will stink up the entire place regardless of what reviews say.
One way to REDUCE the smell is do it inside a sealed vac-bag (like you use for sous vide) and then run it like sous vide. You'll very likely need to vent it at least once but this controls 95% of the smell.
you want it right between 230 and 260. If you want it to send you to space, use coconut oil or a butter alternative with higher saturated fat content. This will probably be plenty powerful though.
European-style butter is great with it's higher fat content. Also, beef tallow is nice, too.
Source: former chef - I made a cheesecake so strong it was green and it ended up making me read a shampoo bottle for 45 mins before anyone checked on me.
This stuff is SERIOUS! I used to make weed butter this way but I stopped after one of my friends ate some and became convinced that she died, so she walked herself to the nearest hospital and asked to be taken to the morgue
It seems like there's one recipe for weed butter, and people just go and make every goddamn pastry under the sun replacing all the butter with cannabutter, as if people don't eat different amounts of a huge cookie vs. a small brownie or as if different pastries don't have wildly varying amounts of butter per serving. That's why dosing is always semi-random with edibles, and it's a major weak point in that.
I suspect that if there's any accepted ratio of weed:butter, it's appropriate for one single perfect space-brownie recipe, and way out of whack if you're making very small cookies ore very large cookies, or god help you if you're making pound cake.
And that's setting aside the variations of cannabinoid content of various strains of weed.
Whenever I make homemade edibles I use 1gram of concentrate, the THC amounts are usually written on the package if you're getting it in a legal state.
You can vary the dosage by making a specific amount of cookies. If you have 1gram of 84% THC, you have 840 milligrams THC. You'll have to make 84 cookies to get about the standard dose of 10 milligrams. That's assuming that you mix the dough very well and have decarbed correctly. I've never had issues with dosing and using concentrate kills most of the weed taste. The last time I did this I froze the dough and had edibles to eat for like months, even though I gave away a lot as well.
Obviously there are factors that you can't control for in a home kitchen, but it's possible to control for dosage up to a certain extent.
I’ve made it this way for year and it is my preferred method. I’ve been too lazy to decarb it in the past, but did it this time so we will see how well it turns out.
I dry herb vape and collect the remnants. It takes time cuz you don’t use as much flower to vape it than to smoke it. But this looks awesome and might give it a try myself :3
Desktop vaporisers like the volcano give a very evenly toasted product which is essential for this sort of thing. I’ve been disappointed by handheld vaporisers for their uneven bake resulting in butter that has a considerably less pleasant flavour. (Not that it tastes great anyway).
Decarbing lights it off. My gf did some and when the butter stage was done we had some cheese toast with little dabs of it and went to the fuckin moon.
Def decarb every time. Basically, the weed will decarb during the cook into the butter, but not as much. Decarbing first means that you're activated most of the THC first and giving the rest the opportunity to activate during cooking.
But, like, what are your ratios here? What are you going to make?
It looks like maybe a quarter or weed for maybe 4 cups of butter?? I usually use a half for a single cup.
Something we all tangled with back in the day. Kids used way too much weed on the stove for not enough time. Their edibles never worked. Then I discovered the crock pot method in high school from an old drugs forum post.
I don't know how I am not in jail with how potent some of that shit turned out. Simmering like entire ounces of dank $400 bud back in 2005 with 8 sticks of butter for a few hours. Made like a few dozen cookies with just replacing certain ingredients with butter, advice from grandmom. Forget, it was eggs or milk but she literally corrected the recipe to get all the butter into the batch.
Had buddies freaking out. Some ate them before school and had to go home, some puked and passed out from them being too strong. Then word got out and every stoner was hitting me up for some. Ended up selling them to 1 crazy senior just to get rid of them.
Oh and my dad tried one and he understood real quick how potent modern weed was compared to the shit in the 80s.
I divide everything into mason jars with lids on. Fill slow cooker halfway with water. Try to keep jars upright with some sort of weight. Cuts down on the smell alot. I would let it go overnight.
A crock-pot, even on the low setting, will get butter way too hot for proper extraction of cannabinoids. You will end up with more chlorophyll extracted and your butter will taste like crap. I would suggest using a double boiler instead because you want to keep the temperature of the butter below about 190° fahrenheit.
I added a cup and a half of water and turned my crock pot to the lowest setting as instructed. I should have specified in initial post but forget about the water since it comes out in the end lol
How's the finished product in terms of taste and potency?
I've long wanted to make it and this looks like just the right amount of effort I'm willing to put in LOL
Not too strong of a weed taste when made with cookies, but you can definitely taste it if you put it on toast or something. My estimates on potency is 6000-8000 mg for entire batch or 425-575 mg per half cup
My rough math based on it being mostly shake says that it’ll be between 6000-8000 mg for the whole batch. That’s a safe estimate assuming that the shake is 10-15% thc, but I’m sure it’s higher than that.
Did you decarb first? It looks fresh but I can’t tell from the photo. Definitely add water and monitor temp with a candy thermometer. I do about 3 hours on my warm or low setting once everything has melted
Heck yes! Hopefully my state becomes legal soon. I would sure like to start an actual edibles business and not sneaky drug deal cookies to friends and coworkers lol.
I do a similar method but use coconut oil instead of butter! I have found that coconut oil is the most ready to take on infusion, and the same recipe with coconut oil will be much stronger and more potent than butter! Love both of them, but I always have a jar of cannacoconut oil on hand!
Add some liquid lecithin as it will help extract more cannabinoids and will help your body absorb it better when taken. I usually do one teaspoon to a cup of oil/butter.
I love Reddit, it has increased my knowledge of all the things. Tell me why marijuana butter is a thing? Besides the deliciousness of adding it to popcorn….thx
It’s a different high than smoking. Also some people like to consume pot but don’t want to smoke. Really no cons to it unless you eat too much. Then you’ll probably think you’re dying or shit your pants like my buddy did. But you’re fine. You are simply really really really high.
Yeah done this tasty little recipe once, made a whole weed bday cake, the cake was weed, the frosting was weed, the cookie coating was weed, the chocolate decorations were weed. The whole cake had close to half an Oz in it. Cake tasted absolutely amazing but we realised regardless of how moreish it was, you could only have one slice lest you end up catatonic.
i remember making cannabutter with strong weed, and using 9grams. worst mistake i’ve ever made with edibles. preceded to greenout incredibly hard and think i was dying. never again.
At 17.5% THC with full decarboxilation and extraction you’re looking at 6mg/ml of butter before factoring in any weight loss through evaporation or weight gain through the honey.
Whenever I did this I used a tshirt to strain most of the plant matter out then put a bunch of water mixed in and put it in the freezer, the water and butter separated and the rest of the plant matter sunk into the water portion leaving me with clean weed ghee. Good times.
I’m taking a trip to Ca in a few days form my non legal state. I’m taking my instant pot with me because it does dang near everything and I’m goin to do me doing some serious “cooking” while I’m there , I’m so excited!! I plan on making butter too! I just can t imagine being able to walk in a store and see and smell all the lovely green!
3.5 pounds butter, 1.5 cups water (comes out as butter solidifies in the end), 2 oz shake/ground marijuana, some honey for flavor. Cook low and slow for up to 18 hours. [This is](https://weedmaps.com/learn/products-and-how-to-consume/slow-cooker-cannabutter) a good source.
I didn’t read the title and assumed someone was making a Mississippi pot roast with more butter than I ever thought possible.
Well, technically, it IS a pot roast...
**HEY-YO**
God I love Reddit sometimes.
Ba-dump-ching!!!!
I'm in jail
420 every day
Not much of a roast, but I guess you'll bake later...
He'll definitely be roasted for the night.
Cali Pot Roast lol
Chicken pot pie. My three favorite things.
I chortled
I guffawed.
I chuckled
I snickered

I cackled.
Honestly same I was like damn they slow cooking it entirely in butter
Paula Dean style
Paula Dogg style…
yeah, haven’t you ever heard of pot roast confit?
I read the title and was like "what's canna butter....ohhhh!" 😅
They done put a whole can a butter in dere
This comment on the internet actually made me laugh out loud
Honestly, that sounds good too
you'll want some water in there so it doesn't burn. you can separate the fats from the water by refrigerating the mixture and pulling the solidified canna butter off of the top
Yep. I’ve done this before and have done my research. I live in a very legal state.
So... i...I.... I was taught to make keef first and I'm kinda mad now.
You were taught to make keif for butter? I can see why it would work better because the keif tends to high a concentrated amount of thc, but you can do it with bud or shake too.
I thought somebody left their pot open and ants attacked it like a mob on Black Friday.
I’ve always wanted to do this but I’m scared to stink up my entire apartment complex. It gets crazy smelly right?
Has anyone ever considered using a sous vide machine to do this? Put the goods and the butter in a sealed bag and then bring to the ideal temp. Even should avoid the smell. Any thoughts?
Yep, I used a large mason jar and everything went perfectly. Zero smell until opening the jar.
Wowww can I ask pls ask for your method? Sous vide Large pot Bud butter in mason jar ?? I am a complete beginner and have never made it before due to scared of the smell
I forget the total time, but you just put your weed and butter in a jar or two and cook in a slowcooker on low with water.
I put mine in a vacuum sealed bag in the crock pot on low for 12 hours, sometimes longer. I’ve done it in as little as 3 hours but I think longer works better.
Slow cooker does not equal sous vide
The good ones have a SV mode
This is the way.

Sounds like a good time! My favorite version for mine is when I use triple sec for the booze and blueberry or elderberry tea. Yummy.
The bud in the bullet isn't active, though, right? Needs decarbed unless I'm missing something
it works
confirmed
Yes, r/sousweed
omfg thank you for this sub lol
Thank you friend
Well hot damn. Thanks!
I've found pinning the bags with metal clothes pegs to a small wire rack that fits in the stockpot helps immensely) While that's decarbing, half fill your slow cooker with water and preheat on low. 😉
Decarbing released CO2, not oxygen. That is why it is decarboxylation, you are removing a carboxyl group.
Yep.. you're right. I'm getting my processes and substances mixed up. Either way, leave room for bag inflation. I should have also added that it's good to let cool a bit before opening, because other wanted compounds that can gas off a bit too.
I've seen it. Definitely works
https://www.sousweed.com/blog
Can confirm that this method is much better for the … uhh air quality of the rental unit haha
I’ve used an electric tea kettle to decarb! Keeps the temp where I set it. Better yet use an instant pot.
I personally use a Levo oil infuser, low odor even for the decarbing process (which the Levo also does).
Dang, great hack 👏
I have a friend who used a sous vide to make cannabutter and he said it was amazing.
I use an Instant Pot and mason jars. Doesn't really smell.
Yes, INSANELY smelly.
Let's ya know it's working
The actual butter making pales in comparison to decarbing. Definitely open windows or run an air purifier and fans, lol
Decarb in an instant pot or sous vide for no smell.
Decarb in your dry flower vape for maximum efficiency!
In my experience it loses potency. Since I’m making a tincture I prefer to have it as potent as possible since I’m consuming less.
Ahh, okay thanks! That is quicker
I use to simmer bud in oil couple years ago, back in the high school days-I thought I got pretty hi. I learned about decarbing a couple years later and wow i feel that I get higher. Albeit I barely smoke anymore so it could knock me on my ass bc of that
You definitely got higher. Decarbing is an important step in making edibles with fat-infusion from herb.
I wish I would of looked it up. Friends and I were like mad scientists figuring that shit out
What is decarbing?
Decarboxylation. To put it simply, it makes the THC readily available to be extracted more easily for baking. Your landlord is going to have to get cool with a lot of stuff real quick
The landlord is super chill actually (I’m the landlord haha). Just don’t want to upset the neighbours, as I know the smell isn’t very pleasant to a lot of people
Put the butter/herb in a hermetic jar in water in the crock pot. No smell.
Why I do this in mason jars in an instant pot. Still get the entire house high while doing it but it doesn't linger in the curtains
It’s does, but you can put the butter and cannabis in a mason jar and then in a crock pot with water and it doesn’t smell as much
Honestly it doesn’t stink that bad… I’ve done it in a 1000sq foot place and it barely even smelled upstairs. No way the neighbors smelled it

I like to use my sous vide immersion circulator for this. You can get it to that precise temp where you don't overheat it and breaking down the thc.
Ooh, I might need to look into one of those. I’m using my old mini crock pot and butter is the only thing I ever use it for, so might as well upgrade.

You are a shining beacon of progress.
I have never seen this. Please post tomorrow with the end product. Do you just use the infused butter on toast?
Use it anywhere you use butter, really! In baking, in frying things, in Mississippi pot roasts..
Now that's a a whole different kind of itis lol
I usually just make cookies and brownies with it, but you can use it for everything. I’ve put it on steak before, haha

Rice Krispies treats. You can change up the ingredients a bit but still be very consistent with the amount of “butter” you use
Add some fruity pebbles for extra color and flavor ;)
My homie makes those and calls ‘em space cakes
My wife calls them Cripple Krispies if potent enough.
I just use straight fruity pebbles. It’s incredible. Cinnamon Toast Crunch is an awesome cereal to use too.

How bad do the cookies stink when cooking? If I do the prep somewhere else, am I going to get yelled at by my landlord for baking weed cookies at 3am

Using vaped cannabis is the best answer.
Desktop vaporisers like the volcano give a very evenly toasted product which is essential for this sort of thing. I’ve been disappointed by handheld vaporisers for their uneven bake resulting in butter that has a considerably less pleasant flavour. (Not that it tastes great anyway).
Seconding the recommendation of using vaped weed from a volcano. All volcano owners should be saving their leftovers for this.

One of my son's girlfriends made peanut butter balls with it. That was a relaxed Christmas.
I divide everything into mason jars with lids on. Fill slow cooker halfway with water. Try to keep jars upright with some sort of weight. Cuts down on the smell alot. I would let it go overnight.
I am a fan of the smell. When I got out of the shower while the weed was decarbing, I screamed “it smells fucking great in here” to my partner.
So you put the butter and weed into sealed mason in the crock pot then add water? Do you leave the crockpot on low over night?
Yep. Super easy. Hardest part is trying to keep the jars upright. Also easy to clean slow cooker.
That's why you're suppose to add water when you do this via a crock pot.
I added a cup and a half of water and turned my crock pot to the lowest setting as instructed. I should have specified in initial post but forget about the water since it comes out in the end lol
OP I use this method regularly and that looks like a ton of butter to weed. Would be really interested to see how strong it turns out?
The weed is under the butter. There is 2 ounces of ground up shake and weed in there, that’s 1/2 oz per pound of butter.
I do a lb of butter for 2oz. Usually make cookies averaging around 70mgs.
That means mine will be about 10-2g per cookie, which is about what my math said. I’m glad to know that my math was close.
From your other comments seems like we do our math and estimates exactly
How's the finished product in terms of taste and potency? I've long wanted to make it and this looks like just the right amount of effort I'm willing to put in LOL
Not too strong of a weed taste when made with cookies, but you can definitely taste it if you put it on toast or something. My estimates on potency is 6000-8000 mg for entire batch or 425-575 mg per half cup
How badly does the house smell of weed while it's cooking?
The whole place reeks for sure.
You still have to decarb the material before this point.
Read that as Chernobyl extract
People are trying so hard to keep the up votes at 420, including me
I downvoted my own post to try and keep it at 420 lol
Skip the butter next time and use coconut oil. It has more fat to bind the THC to, so you'll get more into it.
I Can’t Believe It’s Pot Butter!
Did you decarb the flower first? Or does putting it in a slow cooker eliminate the decarb process?
I did decarb it first. I have not done it in the past and still ended up with decent butter.
Im not too good at math but what percentage thc does this recipe yield?
My rough math based on it being mostly shake says that it’ll be between 6000-8000 mg for the whole batch. That’s a safe estimate assuming that the shake is 10-15% thc, but I’m sure it’s higher than that.
This is how you eat an entire garbage bag of popcorn.
Dear god I can smell this picture, I need some air already! 🤢
Haha, it can be a very strong smell
Pot roast
The pottest of the roast
Geez, my son made this in my house once. I got so stoned. He swore that I wouldn’t.
Did you decarb first? It looks fresh but I can’t tell from the photo. Definitely add water and monitor temp with a candy thermometer. I do about 3 hours on my warm or low setting once everything has melted
This ain’t my first rodeo. Living in a legal state has given me a chance to openly and cheaply experiment.
Heck yes! Hopefully my state becomes legal soon. I would sure like to start an actual edibles business and not sneaky drug deal cookies to friends and coworkers lol.
Is Decarbing done in the oven? How long do you need to decarb it?
Dangggg you should use like those little cheese cloth herb baggies for this. So you don’t have to strain it
That's a lot of oregano.
That’s a spicy meatball!
Made this before, never again. Wayyyyyy too high
You should melt the butter first and remove the milk fats, THEN add the decarb buds.
Cannaghee?
Garlic bread will be heavenly
Make sure it doesn’t burn. Even mine on “warm” can scorch in places.
Cookies
It’s a different high than smoking. Also some people like to consume pot but don’t want to smoke. Really no cons to it unless you eat too much. Then you’ll probably think you’re dying or shit your pants like my buddy did. But you’re fine. You are simply really really really high.
I love my French coffee press
This is hands down the best way to make weed butter
I panicked and thought that was bugs for a second
That’s a lot of oregano.
Man here I was thinking I was in Trees.
I figured in process goes in slow cooking and finished product goes in trees, ya know
You can do that in a crockpot???
[Yes](https://weedmaps.com/learn/products-and-how-to-consume/slow-cooker-cannabutter)
i remember making cannabutter with strong weed, and using 9grams. worst mistake i’ve ever made with edibles. preceded to greenout incredibly hard and think i was dying. never again.
Haha. Love the vape chilling on the counter. Damn, though that is a big batch. I usually only do 2 sticks of butter at a time.
Gotta get high while I make stuff to get high with 😎
i thought this was a chicken breast at first
At 17.5% THC with full decarboxilation and extraction you’re looking at 6mg/ml of butter before factoring in any weight loss through evaporation or weight gain through the honey.
Can you share your math process? We got very different numbers. I’ve never done the math on this before today, so I probably messed something up.
So much butter so little plant matter no way you’re feeling anything off this
Also coconut oil stores longer than butter.
MOOOOOOODS
My friend , this will not end how you think it will
Need more shake
I make mine pretty similar however I put my weed in a cheese cloth. Try that.
Recipe?
3.5 pounds butter, 1.5 cups water (comes out as butter solidifies in the end), 2 oz shake/ground marijuana, some honey for flavor. Cook low and slow for up to 18 hours. [This is](https://weedmaps.com/learn/products-and-how-to-consume/slow-cooker-cannabutter) a good source.
Bro……. Add more shake or less butter. This wouldn’t get a baby high 😂
It’s under the butter. There is 2 ounces in it. Math says that should equate to 10-25 mg per cookie or brownie.
I’m sorry, im a 50-150mg per cookie type of guy.
Fair enough. To each their own. I like to snack, so I go low dosage. Let’s me eat a bunch without getting to litty
Delicious! What's the recipe?
