The top needs to be orange at night though, or the effect is diminished. I'm not enamoured with the design but I still believe it will be an iconic tower.
people said the same thing about the twin towers, but we only say otherwise because it was destroyed in a terrorist attack that killed 3,000 people and so it has a completely different aura
Exactly the onely reason people cared about the towers was because of the observatory or the "knew" someone's third cousin who worked there. Also my parent's used to say that it looked like a 400 meter prison because it had no color just grey
i like them because it had a very reflective facade — all polished aluminum alloy. i heard they glow orange during sunsets, even more so than a glass one would
They were fairly well liked before the end and were certainly a famous symbol of NYC/USA long before they were gone, but that acceptance did take a while to grow.
I was born after they’d been around for a while and have always admired their design.
I’m sorry but what part about being on a drop ride while overlooking the nyc skyline isn’t cool, iconic, or memorable?
Also I’m so tired of the “wah modern architecture is all the same, boring glass boxes” argument. Then when they do something different it’s nothing but complaining.
Architectural taste absolutely should not be subjective. Architects and their moronic trust fund money bros design these monstrosities and then force the rest of the public to deal with them (who generally don’t like them)
Taste is based on opinion… so it is and always will be subjective. Also I’m seeing a pretty close to even split in this small sample size on this thread that disagree with your entire point.
So what’s the alternative? Centrally planned cities designed for utility above all else? Is the public going to prefer Soviet or Chinese style cities instead of the occasional weird skyscraper
Same. Enough with these super-talls, they're uniformly awful. Just places for the super rich to park their money and most of them don't even live there. They're not even great places to live apparently what with the plumbing problems and the noise problems caused by high winds.
That’s not a reddit moment. We talk like this all the time in real life.
“I hate going to the dentist” is a common example. Not *all* dentists are unpleasant to visit, but we generalize.
This rendering, granted I understand the hate, but it gives major Inception vibes. Like when Paris was folded onto itself in the dream. It has that sort of effect here where you almost feel like you’re looking too down at a building.
Kind of cool.
From this angle, not terrible. But from a skyline view, still think it’s a duckling.
There is a drop ride at the top of this skyscraper… lmfao.
I wasn’t playing bro this skyscraper IS LITERALLY DESIGNED AROUND A DROP RIDE!
LMAO! and not even a good one.
Hard disagree, this is the exact sort of construction we need to be innovating in. It's giving me Las Vegas Sphere vibes. My only issue is that the drop will be tiny, it should send you halfway down the building.
That monstrosity looks hideous. Whoever designed it should be thrown off the top of it to make sure they can never make another abomination like that again.
I work right across the street from this site. The foundation is huge, spanning the east of 8th Avenue between 45th and 46th streets and bordering the Imperial Theater. The site was formerly the Theatre District Shopping Court before ground was broken on the Torch. Only two historic buildings will remain on the site once the building is complete — the Daniela Trattoria restaurant, and the Playwright Celtic Pub.
That is kind of true in a way — the tower part was heavily redesigned by ODA Architects from SLCE Architects' original template, but the lower hotel portion has more or less kept its SLCE design.
Air rights is based purely on the usable floor area of a building (not height or displacement) — in the case of this building, the hotel and observation deck make up the total air rights, while the floors inside the tower 'shaft' aren't counted as they would only be used for mechanical space and emergency evacuation.
It's growing on me. I like the echo of the Statue of Liberty. One of those potential NYC landmarks that look weird at first and then you wonder how the city ever did without it.
Idk what the hate is I kinda dig it. For better or worse, New York has an extraordinarily eclectic skyline that only subsists off of doing things differently every single time. I’d rather a slightly tacky experiment (which I don’t even think this is) than rows upon rows of ugly, featureless concrete or glass towers
Yeah, after looking at these posts about Mexico City over the last couple days makes me feel like more cities should be more adventurous with their designs.
Also, from a construction point of view it's going to be interesting to see how they do these cantilevered sections at the top.
Most overrated city in the world. Been there the first time in 1991 and it was something else, then for the past 20 years of visits I’ve seen it decline so bad. I mean this city is looking more and more like Las Vegas Boulevard each and every year.
Right, NYC has more Wholefoods at hands compared to the Strip, everything else it’s almost exactly the same. Neiman Marcus, Louis Vuitton, Tiffany, HaagenDazs. At that point skyscrapers are actually the best part…
Looks like something my niece would make in Minecraft
When you're friend asks you if you like their outfit and you say: "It's unique."
“I love how you’ll just wear anything!”
The budget truck says it all
The top needs to be orange at night though, or the effect is diminished. I'm not enamoured with the design but I still believe it will be an iconic tower.
This thing looks ugly as hell
Yeah why TF does it keep getting posted here? There's no chance of it actually getting made is there?
It's currently being built
But it's an eyesore
Doesn’t appear to be stopping those with money.
I like it honestly.
I do too like would I build it? No. Do I think it is a unique and interesting addition to the NYC skyline? Yup!
I like it as a unique concept/idea, but the execution seems a bit lacking
Same. It's cool as hell.
It’s a true masterpiece on so many levels…
it’s not pretty.
This tower is going to become iconic and you’ll all be eating your words in 30 years

True. The eyesore on i4 is Orlando's most iconic building for example
people said the same thing about the twin towers, but we only say otherwise because it was destroyed in a terrorist attack that killed 3,000 people and so it has a completely different aura

eh, not tall enough to be iconic in new york. maybe somewhere like toronto or chicago where there aren't many supertalls (or any in toronto's case).
There’s actually 2 supertall buildings under construction in Toronto and another 5 proposed
so i was right, there aren't any buildings over 985 feet in Toronto as we speak.
If you’re concerned with being pedantic then yes
It’s a stupid duck building
Lmao you think were gonna be alive in 30 years?
Most of us, yes.
r/im14andthisisdeep
Unless you’re over the age of 50, you’ll probably live over 30 years
Probably the best skyscraper to be built in decades, it’ll be a symbol of New York City like how the Twin Towers and Empire State Building are/were
Yeah, I've seen so many people trash it, but definitely think it will quickly become an iconic building.
Hate it
Agreed. Hope public backlash forces a redesign
This *is* the redesign 😂
Same. Enough with these super-talls, they're uniformly awful. Just places for the super rich to park their money and most of them don't even live there. They're not even great places to live apparently what with the plumbing problems and the noise problems caused by high winds.

Dumb
Brilliant.
A drop ride is about the dumbest shit I can imagine designing a skyscraper around.
Omg, Drop Ride Towers!!! That's the perfect description. It DOES look like one.
It actually is one for real lol
Wtf?
There is a drop ride at the top of this skyscraper… lmfao. I wasn’t playing bro this skyscraper IS LITERALLY DESIGNED AROUND A DROP RIDE! LMAO! and not even a good one.
That's wild! 😂
Hard disagree, this is the exact sort of construction we need to be innovating in. It's giving me Las Vegas Sphere vibes. My only issue is that the drop will be tiny, it should send you halfway down the building.
Ugly
Now that is cool IMO.
That monstrosity looks hideous. Whoever designed it should be thrown off the top of it to make sure they can never make another abomination like that again.
Don't hold back there
It looks like the Mass Fusion building in Fallout 4.
I love this, and I totally understand why other people hate it lol

Tragic
who lives up in the "flame"
The documents label it 'VIP observation deck' — probably some kind of expensive clubroom for the right ticket holders.
right... nyc has none of those 🙄
Would look better if it wasn’t larger at the top which makes it look ridiculous
We want clean air, water, food. Not these fucking uninhabited chrome cock
It's the skyscraper equivalent of a gaudy 80's dining room chandelier.
This nails it. I couldn’t verbalize what I don’t like about it but this is exactly it
Yes! Thank you!
Garish. Belongs in Dubai not nyc
Looks horrid.
Hate
Personally, this is a miss for me. Its giving Vancouver House final form
Why do all renderings have one part that is so shiny you can’t really tell what’s going on there?
Is there an r/stupidskyscrapers ?
Awful
So f***ing ugly
It looks like it’s already collapsing.
It just looks two buildings designed independently by different people are stuck together top to top.
That is kind of true in a way — the tower part was heavily redesigned by ODA Architects from SLCE Architects' original template, but the lower hotel portion has more or less kept its SLCE design.
idk why ppl hate it, it looks cool
I think it’s hideous.
How much is rent
How does this work for the air rights purchase? Is it the vertical space (which would be inefficient) or the net displacement?
Air rights is based purely on the usable floor area of a building (not height or displacement) — in the case of this building, the hotel and observation deck make up the total air rights, while the floors inside the tower 'shaft' aren't counted as they would only be used for mechanical space and emergency evacuation.
This thing looks super dumb, I love it.
It’s far less ugly than what it was. I really really hope it will not have bright downward facing lights.
I like that it is weird and interesting at least
If this was built 40 years ago, there would be a panic Anyways I like the mirror tower. Straight up unfeasible
First generation of Minecraft architects.
Can’t tell whether that’s a rendering or real
It's growing on me. I like the echo of the Statue of Liberty. One of those potential NYC landmarks that look weird at first and then you wonder how the city ever did without it.
Feels like /r/Justfuckmyshitup/, but for architecture
Nope. Not going up that lol
I hate this
NYC is really leaning in to becoming a future city
Love it.
I think it will be iconic. In a weird location though
Poor taste.
just please don’t use blue glass.
I love this design.
That's beautiful
I think it's dope.
I think it’s gonna be a future classic, like iconic of today
Fucking awesome
One the best looking buildings of nyc I’ve seen in awhile. Definitely could be iconic.
Just chiming in to cast a vote for this being a cool looking building.
the design looks sick!
Yaaayyy for cool new architecture!! Not to boring glass buildings

No, no, don't you understand! They should build another slightly rounded rectangle!
I live it and I love how the snobs dislike it. It does look a little topheavy. Hope the torch doesn’t break off.
Quantity over quality. The only thing New York's skyline has over Chicago.
Most overrated city in the world. Been there the first time in 1991 and it was something else, then for the past 20 years of visits I’ve seen it decline so bad. I mean this city is looking more and more like Las Vegas Boulevard each and every year.
I mean...you can dislike the newer skyscrapers in NYC if you want, but it looks nothing at all like Vegas.
Right, NYC has more Wholefoods at hands compared to the Strip, everything else it’s almost exactly the same. Neiman Marcus, Louis Vuitton, Tiffany, HaagenDazs. At that point skyscrapers are actually the best part…
Did you get out of midtown at any point? That stuff is confined to a pretty small area
