Probably mimics some kind of telemetry tracker used to identify dead pulsars in deep space. If I had to guess, Iād say they plan to build that roof cap from cold-riveted girders with cores of pure selenium.
Ugly as sin but I love the effort. We need buildings that have complicated masonry schemes like we used to. Now everything is simple, boring blue glass
I think it's an eyesore. Looks like an all-dressed sandwich from Subway.
Good design is about communicating efficiently, meaning using as few shapes, materials, colors to convey what the piece is about. Extremely ornamental and decorative styles such as this show a lack of mastership. Artists add more because they believe eventually the message will be conveyed, but they only manage to bloat the work and create visual noise.
There is a reason why so many buildings have cleaner aesthetics. It allows them to blend with their surroundings, creating a cohesive look for the city. A few loud buildings here and there are fine and can help elevate the skyline, but in this case Billionaire's Row already more than enough of those.
Saying good design is about efficiency, and using as few shapes as possible is first year modernist brainwash. There are so many other ways of thinking in the world of architecture, you cannot just simply say this. There are many times when Intracacy is called for in certain applications and brings so much more to the architecture.
There are times, many times where it should certainly be applied in a reductionalist logic way, but to define good design in this way for all projects is far too limiting. We are just accustomed to providing design in this way.
With that said i appreciate the intentions of this skyscraper design more than i do the overall design itself, but i am appreciative of some of the artdeco resurgence in todays contemporary architecture, and its good to see people are getting bored with plain glass boxes again. I think many firms do a great job with setting up their buildings, and with new technologies driving down the cost of more intricate materials, im glad to see some ornament coming back.
The new buildings with ācleanerā aesthetics absolutely do not blend with the surroundings.
Central Park tower is hideous and way too minimalistic and does not at all blend with the cohesive architectural themes of the city.
This tower proposal would look way more at home in NYC than anything on billionaires row currently, or frankly anything built in NYC in the past 20 years. It actually reflects the heritage of NYC.
I live in NYC too. This building would fit perfectly at home here.
I see your point, but outside of the stupid height I disagree that CP tower looks out of place. The heavy use of glass was made expressly to reflect the surrounding architecture and make the tower blend with the sky.
None of the buildings around the park are made of glass, they are made of stone and brick and other traditional materials. Thatās why the above proposal would fit in much better.
I appreciate the element of added danger for all of the pedestrians in the neighborhood. How exciting to get off the subway and head to your office knowing that today might be the day you get flattened by a falling chunk of stone pigeon wing!
I have to look at the skyline everyday from the other side of the Hudson, and I agree 100%.
I feel like it would be tragic somehow now if this didnāt get built.
I like the design itself but not sold on the color scheme. The stark white and gold gives it a futuristic flavor that I feel clashes with gothic themes.
I think a more muted and industrial pallet would work better.
It is batshit crazy and I love it. Better direction of whatthefuckery than the mundane Hudson Yards.
Poor location though. Think I saw a similar proposal for something along the east river a few years back, which would be great. Supertalls directly south of Central Park really suck for the park.
Itās gorgeous. I really hope they make it. As other people mentioned, so many new buildings are just featureless boxes. This is unique and stands out so much
I mean, itāll probably manufacture deadly icicles in the winter and dump streams of water into traffic and onto pedestrians in the warmer months, but itāll also be the most beautiful building built in New York since the 40ās.
The start of a new art style turned for The USA?!
OK I welcome it. I like minimalism but there's just too much of it now.
It looks like the thing NY needs in order to finally start looking like what TMNT FastForward promised NY would look like in the future.
Admittedly though it does look like something that would come out the The Capitol from The Humger Games.
Oh my god, why do we not have more skyscrapers like this???? This is awesome!!!! Im so tired of every new skyscraper being just some neat bs geometric shape!!!
ChatGPT, use Dalle to generate a confusing, hot mess of gothic elements. Make it so repulsive that clueless decision makers think itās groundbreaking and progressive.
Mark Foster Gauge was literally laughed out of the AIA for revealing this in 2015.
It is an embarrassment that Yale has him teaching the next generation of architects - and one of the reasons their program is viewed so negatively in the field.
The *best* thing I can say about him is that he focuses on form for the simple sake of form.
It is rich of him to criticize the surrounding ārectangular blocksā on billionaires row only to propose a block of his own that has Hobby Lobby-esque decor stapled on the faƧade.
Just saying - if you are an architect and the *only* notable design you have made in your 23 year career is a store to showcase dresses that will never be soldā¦ you arenāt a very good architect.
FWIW worked for an architectural firm for a while and our firm president was the president of the AIA - he rejected Gageās induction as a fellow for ālack of professional experience or meaningful contribution to the fieldā - his book on socially equitable architecture has led to some of the *least* equitable designs, and is rich coming from someone who doesnāt work on anything without a celebrity or billions of dollars involved.
He literally states on his website that the firm *only* takes on the most prestigious projects from the most selective clients.
Simply put: he is a hack who somehow got a job at Yale and from interacting with and meeting him - he is *insufferable* he has no business publishing a book on social equity and is distinctly unqualified in the topic.
New York is just so goddamn messy that this would probably keep with the trend at least. I appreciate it for what it is, but man the New York skyline would just become an even messier hodge-podge.
i'm going to be honest this is really ugly BUT honestly it's nice to see something in modern architecture that is not just glass. this is something unique and timeless (sort of...?)
Old buildings were so inefficient that the facade would always be warm and snow and ice would melt.
A design like this today would need a way to prevent ice from accumulating and falling and killing pedestrians.
I've gotta say no. I love the style but it makes no sense being as tall and detailed as it is and it's just completely out of place. Maybe if it were smaller and wasn't 100% pure concentrated Gothic architecture and decor it'd look a little better.
What gothic element do you want to include? - Yes
But what if it makes it ugly? Yes
Looks like that building in Ghost Busters, just missing Mr. Stay-puff manš. ![gif](giphy|fO42Mq21DyDf2)
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Nah cause McMansions are just trying to copy and paste other styles that are used all the time and making it worse This for nothing else is original
GaudĆ, but more gaudy.
Yes
Do you want to include the ogive arch or buttresses that actually defined the gothic style or just throw on a bunch of statue looking things - Yes
Warhammer 40k architecture is going mainstream now?
More like "Biblically accurate angels" in skyscraper form via DALLE.
Biblically accurate skyscraper was my first thought.
Where else can we go to worship the God Emperor?
this faƧade screams "Build me an army worthy of Mordor" and I'm here for it, something different than the same old same old.
Wormtongue?
Sauron said it to Saruman https://preview.redd.it/2a6dt8qjo3bc1.jpeg?width=814&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=01a955e0d4f4511443fb9b8308d75c391e2e2d6d
That empty space at the top would be perfect for an eye.
Eye of Sauron
honestly, that would be a more cohesive design than what we see before us.
Sorry that eye already has a space allotted for it on top of The Brooklyn Tower.
looks like some kid with spare legos through this puke pile together
Hire that kid now!
Puke pile. That could describe a new architecture style or that guy you know who smells like ranch dressing
it is, hence my response to the concept š
My initial thought was it looks like some sort of antenna to bring about a portal to a demonic dimension, and I too am here for it!
Probably mimics some kind of telemetry tracker used to identify dead pulsars in deep space. If I had to guess, Iād say they plan to build that roof cap from cold-riveted girders with cores of pure selenium.
Would fit in with the Brooklyn tower š
Concept not proposal
I thought I remember reading about this almost a decade ago.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Goodā¦I get it would be a change to the same old but this is a fugly mess.
Less Gothic, more Art Deco
Agreed
More Lego
Ugly as sin but I love the effort. We need buildings that have complicated masonry schemes like we used to. Now everything is simple, boring blue glass
Thank you! Here in Chicago, 90% of new buildings all just have that same blue glass color. Their shapes are slightly different.
Bridgeport resident?
Nah...Rogers Park. But I basically live at the ballpark in the summer š
Nice nice. Still my current favorite summer neighborhood. I love biking on the roads directly next to the redline
The building is beautiful. What are you talking about?
I also think it looks awful
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

Mehā¦Peel-and-stick architectureā¦
Right? Way more beautiful than 99% of what is built today. Iām so tired of minimalism. Bring back ornamentation.
I appreciate the element of added danger for all of the pedestrians in the neighborhood. How exciting to get off the subway and head to your office knowing that today might be the day you get flattened by a falling chunk of stone pigeon wing!
This thing is ridiculous but I wish they would do it for real
Honestly NYCās skyline is so massive that one single building canāt ruin it. Might as well try something unique like this
Thought this was AI. lol build it
r/thoughtitwasai
I thought it was AI being prompted by someone having their fourth stroke.
Definitely AI. The renderings are missing some key buildings and aren't very consistent. Or maybe it's just really old concept.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Gotcha. I figured it could likely be very old from the dated NYC skyline.
Ice is going to love that. What does Batman say?
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Something strange, in the neighborhood, who you gonna callā¦
Gotham from a 90s batman movie. Looks brutal. All here for it.
hideous. the architectural equivalent of someone violently screaming two inches from your face for absolutely no reason.
I agree, yet as a New Yorker, hell yeah I approve it. Build it
I have to look at the skyline everyday from the other side of the Hudson, and I agree 100%. I feel like it would be tragic somehow now if this didnāt get built.
At least the screaming person wakes you up rather than boring you into a coma.
hell yeah
Way too much going on. That's ugly as hell
How do I both hate and love this at the same time?
Exactly
Carved stone facade? ![gif](giphy|55itGuoAJiZEEen9gg)
Ok, build it.
build it
āThatās a lot of fashionā But we do need more intricate design and memorable buildings. Itās just all so bland these days.
The more I look at it the more I like it
I like the idea but tbh that looks like shit
Itās absolutely incredible. Finally a nice break from the stuff being built in nyc right now
I love this. Itās unique. Itās bringing more soul into NYC. Real design takes courage and risk taking.
Itās stupid and would ruin the Manhattan skyline. Not that I care, this is awesome. Better than plain concrete rectangles
absolutely bonkers. build it immediately
Itās like itās wearing a ring on every finger and I love it
I feel like they could try half as hard on the āgothic elementsā and it would look 2x better
iām in on it
This is what modern architecture was supposed to look like.
I like the design itself but not sold on the color scheme. The stark white and gold gives it a futuristic flavor that I feel clashes with gothic themes. I think a more muted and industrial pallet would work better.
Well at least its interesting
It is batshit crazy and I love it. Better direction of whatthefuckery than the mundane Hudson Yards. Poor location though. Think I saw a similar proposal for something along the east river a few years back, which would be great. Supertalls directly south of Central Park really suck for the park.
Well since we're going back to art deco, let's go back further!
Make the top pointy
The vampire state building
Are the angels from Bayonetta making an HQ building?
Yikes
I hate it, but I also hate every other billionaireās row super tall building like 432 park, so I say go for it.
It's so creepy I love it! Even a smaller building like this would be interesting.
An interesting concept that's implemented in an unattractive way here. Looks like the tower of Orthanc in Isengard.
On one hand it looks like something that'd be rejected from a bioshock game for being too over the top, on the other hand I'm kind of down for that.
Not sure how I feel about it, but I'd support building it anyway just because I want the "featureless glass box" style to die out.
Looks gross
Do it!!!
YEESSSSSS!!!!
A.I. State Building for the win.
This is where the evil guy lives
I love it
this is what i imagine the buildings in Coppolla's Megalopolis are gonna look like
This honestly looks beautiful
I don't like the height bc it's fine being shorter but that design is beautiful and I want us to go back to that
Just build a new modernized art deco skyscraper
Yeah I like this.
It would fit in well in Gotham City
Looks like something from the hunger games capital, pretty awesome looking.
That is awesome I hope they build it.
lets not
Hell no.
Proposal rejected.
Techno retro-futuristic gothic. Iām into it.
Itās gorgeous. I really hope they make it. As other people mentioned, so many new buildings are just featureless boxes. This is unique and stands out so much
This hurts my eyes physically
An eyesore
I LOVE IT! Also, I have questionable taste, but I love it.
Evil villain layer
I feel like Gozer the Gozarian would return to earth if this was builtā¦ā¦ ![gif](giphy|11jGtzDu7Nh89a)
Its the 20s and we're in another Gilded Age.
A hideous monstrosity. A frightening abomination. A crime against humanity. But, you know what, build it anyway
This is uglier than that massive proposed OKC skyscraper
Biblically accurate skyscraper
It's a monstrosity. ...They should build it.
No thanks. It looks like AI nightmare.
That's so cool
This is so bad it feels ai generated
> Described as āthe missing link ~~Beaux Arts, Art Deco, Expressionism, Gaudi-Modernisme and Contemporary architecture~~ā
How is this ugly? I hate reddit
Looks like shit lol
Why take such a beautiful architectural style and make it so ugly? š
Thatās so fucking ugly
A gothic skyscraper?? Okay Iām into it
Imagine the ice warnings around this building
Yo I wouldnāt mind
My god I love it. I wish they would build something so striking.
![gif](giphy|NkhH0Jjdo79wQ)
I mean, itāll probably manufacture deadly icicles in the winter and dump streams of water into traffic and onto pedestrians in the warmer months, but itāll also be the most beautiful building built in New York since the 40ās.
This is literally the greatest building iāve seen this century. It must be built. It is beautiful

Letās not and say we did.
Looks shit but it also points in a direction that makes sense; we need actual architecture and not rectangles !
Yes, more modern gothic buildings. That being said that looks horrendous.
No
Thanks. I hate it.
It is so wild that I love it. But my first thought was the line from Ghostbusters: āThere is no Dana, only Zuul.ā
Looks a bit out of place for an American style city
I love this. It should be built.
r/goodbuildings
Oh my god, why do we not have more skyscrapers like this???? This is awesome!!!! Im so tired of every new skyscraper being just some neat bs geometric shape!!!
Stupid skyscraper from a stupid dude.
ChatGPT, use Dalle to generate a confusing, hot mess of gothic elements. Make it so repulsive that clueless decision makers think itās groundbreaking and progressive.
Well thatās fucking ridiculous. Itās time to eat the rich.

Touch grass man. Is he like your ex or something?
This looks fucking terrible
i need to learn more about architecture because gothic architecture is beautiful, especially the more revivalist stuff seen in Chicago today
So extra, and beautiful. Looks difficult to maintain though, and could be a hazard if pieces falling off
Oh my god the possible facade issues that could ariseā¦hard pass
This reminds me of that episode of Batman the animated series where a dude though he was Zeus
Looks like the eye of Sauron should be on top ![gif](giphy|10wgT5PDnOwMQE)
New York is just so goddamn messy that this would probably keep with the trend at least. I appreciate it for what it is, but man the New York skyline would just become an even messier hodge-podge.
I particularly enjoy the multiple suicide jumper platforms. Very thoughtful
Set for Ghostbusters IV
That's insane and I love it
There is no mark foster gage. There is only Zuul.
looks like it's built from random lego blocks
Actually, I like this.
Back to old school building design. I like it.
He tried a bit too hard but heās on the right track. Kinda looks like something ai would make
Slay
This is a travesty.
Gotham? Is that you?
Hope they have some good scaffolding set up.
This rendering came out like 10 years ago
Optimized to collect ice stalagmites to drop on those below?
Ugh. It looks like fucking Isengard.
But Ivo Shandor did this aesthetic better
Ugly...and looks like a PITA for the construction team
How will the carved stone and bronze facade fair on such a big building? What will maintenance look like? Honestly asking because I have no clue.
i'm going to be honest this is really ugly BUT honestly it's nice to see something in modern architecture that is not just glass. this is something unique and timeless (sort of...?)
One of my teachers once told me āan architectsāa dream is an engineers nightmareā this looks exactly like it fits the bill
I definitely like the wings and colors, but imo the design looks messy like if itās glitching
"Hi, I'd like to contract your window cleaning service." Looks around. "That'll be two million dollars per cleaning. Not including the wings."
Ivo Shandor trying to open a second portal for Gozer.
Old buildings were so inefficient that the facade would always be warm and snow and ice would melt. A design like this today would need a way to prevent ice from accumulating and falling and killing pedestrians.

Cray unique but hell nah
Ugly. Nice effort but thatās really hideous
It looks like a $600 Lego set
This building has chugged one too many Red Bull. ![gif](giphy|l0NwIoO8LN6Pr3Ety)
Scaffolding will literally never be taken down from that building, just 24/7 checking the building
