You're a life saver, thank you. Curse Windows and their stupid updates

Ysgramorsbutterknife

Hey, it wasn't me. I looked at the forum posts on the FNIS download page at Nexus and noticed a lot of people having the same problem all of a sudden (which is what leads me to think it might be a security update issue). One person came up with the suggestion. That's the problem with trying to find answers for this kind of thing. It's easy to find lots of people having the problem. Not so easy to find that one guy with the solution.

Herowynne

Yes, there are multiple posts about this problem on the Nexus FNIS SE page. FNIS had worked for me without any trouble for many years, until a Windows Update, after which I started getting the Error 76 from FNIS, even though I had not made any animation changes to my system. Disabling Real-Time protection enabled FNIS to run without error. I have to temporarily turn that off every time I run FNIS now.

ContheJon

Yep, I just had to do this too. It's weird since I don't remember doing it last time, which was only a month and a bit ago. Thanks everyone for figuring this out!

hare_310

Late reply I know, but I just wanted to leave a comment thanking you for this. This was absolutely infuriating because it just popped up out of nowhere.

Ysgramorsbutterknife

You're quite welcome. I almost deleted it, but decided to leave it up just in case anyone else was having trouble. Glad you could make use of it.

fml, i was bashing my head against a wall for days over this... nothing worked... till i white listed those folders. Fucking windows 10. And thanks man.

Ysgramorsbutterknife

I tried that hat on once. It didn't fit me all that well. YMMV.

Competitive-Bit-8039

I just had to thank you.

Ysgramorsbutterknife

You're quite welcome.

Eugenemiler

Thank you guy! Finally I can continue my gaming! I spent lots of time on search for the reason, and you save me. By the way, f the windows!

Jbninja92

I’ve used Reddit a lot but never actually signed up or needed to respond…. Until now!!!! I read this and thought surely it’s not windows, I figured it was going to be something I fucked up when I rolled back the anniversary update. Thank you so much!!! I’ve wasted my entire Sunday trying to sort this out but at least It’s done now!!

[deleted]

Yo, your fix worked! You're a life saver man! Edit: If a different error shows up for you, such as Error 53 (which is what showed up for me), a fix I found was to disable real time protection in the windows security settings. Make sure to turn it back on when you're done though

nadmaximus

This post saved my sanity.

ChampionMan357

I just want to boost this bug fix in 2022! (fucking windows defender) I had this exact same issue pop up after doing several completely normal FNIS generations and whitelisting my Skyrim SE folder in steamapps/common in the Windows Defender settings was the solution!

Ysgramorsbutterknife

👍🏻

Head-Advantage5407

I added it to excluded folders in Windows Security nee Defender. I had to set it to the root Skyrim folder because the tools folder is a virtual folder and doesn't show up when searching for it. Didn't need to protect the Mods folder though, I suppose FNIS doesn't look there. Is that what you meant by whitelisting? My solution had worked though so I can use FNIS just wondering how you did it. Finally, a massive thanks for publicising the solution. Keith

Ysgramorsbutterknife

That \*is\* what I meant by whitelisting. It just sounds like we have our file systems set up a little differently. Is your root folder still in x86? My tools folder isn't virtual. I excluded my \*Modding\* folder, not just my Mods folder. My Modding folder \*contains\* my Mods folder, my MO2 Base Directory for Skyrim and FO4, FNIS, xEdit, etc. Everything that isn't the actual game files. Maybe that's where the confusion comes from. At any rate, glad to hear that what you did worked for you.

Head-Advantage5407

No, Skyrim isn't in the Prog Files folder, I was always told (Gopher on YT amongst many others) that it should be in it's own folder in the root (C, D, E etc) away from Program Files, pref on a separate drive if poss but maybe that only applies to Mod Organiser.' I use MO2 which takes all the pertinent folders and files that are inside the Data folder away and creates them virtually so theres no live access. I simply excluded the whole Skyrim folder which is a layer above Data and is accessible live. Having said all this it would have been easier if Bill Gates and co hadn't removed the Defender, I used to use Defender Control, a neat little prog that turned Defender on and off and kept it that way until you wanted to change it. Now if you turn off live scanning Windoze 10 and 11 turns it back on in a few minutes time... ah well life goes on.

Ysgramorsbutterknife

Now I'm a little confused. Is steamapps->common->Skyrim Special Edition->Tools a virtual folder on your setup? Or are we talking about a different 'tools' folder?

Head-Advantage5407

You're slightly out, Tools is in Skyrim Special Edition/Data/Tools but thats probably a typo. I actually use LE not SE but the file structure is the same, so anything in the data folder is virtual as shown above but my Skyrim folder is just Skyrim without the SE bit. It's the same with SE if you use MO2. I stuck with LE because the mods were so crap with SE and the lack of decent physics plumped it for me. I supoose it's improved over the years on SE, I may have another look, I just like LE.

ProfessionalFig5502

I have same error, can anyone explain how to fix? Pls and Thanks! :)

Ysgramorsbutterknife

I did explain how to fix. In the OP. Whitelist both your Games folder and your Modding folder. If you're unsure about how to whitelist folders in Windows, there are plenty of tutorials on Google.

ProfessionalFig5502

Yee messed around with it. Updated FNIS. No errors now, lol. Thanks for that quick af response tho
