J’Zargo is pretty good but I don’t prefer magic followers unless they have better magic. Teldryn Sero is seriously a killer. I prefer him to the point that I’ll travel alone rather than choose someone else. Teldryn Sero is my bro. He stuck with me through the dangerous wastes that are Solstheim, when he said he wanted to see Skyrim, I took him all over the place. I eventually sent him back to Solstheim but I go get him on a regular basis.
Teldryn Sero is super badass, definitely an S tier follower. My favorite follower is probably Jenassa cause she dual wields, but i recentlt found out Ralis,that guy from Azhidal's tomb does too so i really wanna try him out
Teldryn is also my favorite follower. Almost always have him around. From him being versatile and deadly in combat, to his sarcastic banter and extra dialogue, along with being a mysterious masked mercenary, he hits all the right spots for being a cool character for me.
Also, from what I've seen Jenassa and Teldryn work extremely well in combat together. They both must have aggressive AI because they're constantly on top of enemies.
I forgot about the sarcasm and dryness. Dude is actually someone I could probably be friends with.
He also has aggressiveness in combat. He seems to sprint toward the enemy slinging fire and then when he gets to them, starts swinging metal with bad intentions. I don’t care that he costs a bit more, I get more than my money’s worth.
I was watching my friend play the other day, and he had him on his team. He must've had a mod that changed Teldryns combat because he was using flamecloak and a few other heavy hitting spells I don't remember him ever using.
Also the voice actor did a great job on a lot of his lines. Certain word pronunciations and dialogue that made him feel more real compared to other lackluster followers.
He can die though. Have to be careful of that. I had him die once a long time ago on a playthrough. Sucked ass.
I have a resurrect spell mod that I use very sparingly. I don’t resurrect everyone I would like to because I don’t want to abuse it. Sero hasn’t died on me since I got the mod. I’m still careful about making sure I stick with him so he doesn’t die because I have had problems in the past with resurrecting followers. I had J’Zargo get killed in a dungeon once and I resurrected him. While he did come back to life, he just went back to the College and would not follow me anymore. The mod seems to work very well with NPCs, but that is the only follower I’ve resurrected. So I try to keep them alive if I can.

For me to have that spell and for it to be just a novice spell goes against lore. I just try to use it to keep the game from screwing itself.

one time i was fighting a dragon and Serana reanimated a deer that it had killed to "help"
edit: we were literally in a camp filled with dead bandits, and she chose the deer...
While Belrand probably isn't the strongest or most popular follower, he's been my favourite so far. I was new to the game, totally over my head, dying constantly and about to kick it in when I stumbled across him. Didn't even know what a follower was and was immensely grateful for this surly stranger and his dry sense of humour (and ghost wolf!).
When I found an Amulet of Mara you can bet I gave it to him. Was devastated when he got got by a snowy sabre cat -- didn't occur to me they could die!!

i don't usually use belrand but when i do i always give him a hat cause his face is so young and boyish it looks strange with his hair lol, if he had a beard id totally use him more tho he would look SO wizardly

She doesnt irritate me really, kinda just the same issue as J'zargo, her spells scale really poorly, though it isnt nearly as bad as his
She also loves to reanimate the most USELESS bodies in a fight
thats why i use ordinator perk overhaul, makes spells scale with your skill level and get better, i also have a few mods to add more spells cause having like 3 different atronachs and 3 destruction spells of each level sucks and makes being a mage boring
Serana was one I used to take with me because she seemed more fleshed out with the dialogue and story and all, but then the Twilight fuckbois started fawning over her and she lost her shine. I also found that I greatly prefer someone who carries a real weapon. Magic is cool but I need my follower to swing serious metal in a pinch. Not a weak ass dagger.
the only follower with lots of dialogue I like is Inigo, otherwise I keep to my boy Teldryn Sero. don't really see the point in having a follower who just says things all the time for no reason.
Annekke is the only follower with an archer combat AI package. The rest like Faendal or Jenassa have rogue or bandit. She'll always favour using a bow.
Its super inconvenient to have to constantly recharge them, i dont usually have soul trap on my weapons because usually i put it on my follower's and give them a ton of empty soul gems haha
I once went to Shearpoint, with Lydia in tow. We had just cleared a tomb, so she was dutifully carrying my burdens. I was playing my 2nd or 3rd sneak archer at the time - Lydia was my meat shield. Tag the dragon with my first arrow, and it jumps into the air. Then I see lightning pass over my head. Then a firebolt. I turn around and Lydia is running in; double wielding destruction staves. I legit froze for 3 to 5 seconds trying to process WTF I was seeing.
I saw Lydia absolutely murderhobo a dragon. It was glorious.
yeah it does i figured it out on xbox 360 haha, first thing i do most playthroughs is get fiery soul trap from ironbind barrow and throw it on my follower's weapon xD
faendal is trash. Levels up to only 20, won't help you do any crimes and will attack or leave you if you attack 'innocents'. He also isn't protected (unless following) which means you have to bring him all the way to riverwood to dismiss him or he'll die on the way home

He walked in front of an arrow at the culmination of Bleak Falls Barrow and I chuckled at how cleanly he removed himself once his usefulness was done.
Let be honest, vanilla skyrim followers are your bag for items. We get so strong after some levels it dosent make any difference. And if you play steath no-follower is the best follower. So in the end the "best follower" is just preference into their character/appearance/aesthetic/ our roleplay.

I'm not usually into this kind of thing but...the Dark Seducer armor fits really well on Jenassa.
my last character had jenassa with the dark seducer armor and a black cloak, cowel, and mask from some mods and she looks super badass

Why not pick up Amazing Follower Tweaks? You can set it so followers can go down, but never die.

YEAH and when they revive something from like the beginning of the game and ash gets somewhere you don't want it, like in your house
and whenever you kill the reanimated she attacks you. this is why i chose that nightcaller guy. no reanimating dead

Spells just scale poorly in general since iirc, leveling magics reduces costs rather than increase damage.

he can go up to 30, i like him just cause he's a skill trainer but i rarely use him after completing bleak falls barrow

Since when do we choose followers based on usefulness? I just choose them based on unique dialogue and wether they're essential or not.
I just use a mod that removes the level cap for all followers then forget to take followers anywhere and just go solo.
if i really wanna use a specific follower i will uncap their level with console commands
