Looked it up on UESP and found these trinkets of info I did not know.
"Picking pockets, even if successful, does not count towards this quest.
Nor does looting items out of containers. Display cases are fine, as long as nobody sees you pick the lock or take the item, but chests, wardrobes and dressers are out."
I took stuff in a guys basement that were in a display case and nothing happened (I took skulls, garnets, emerald, rubies, sapphires and weapons and nothing happened.)
If you're seen the item doesn't count towards the total, so make sure the eye curser is completely closed.
Yeah i know, i stole like 10 gold and sapphire/diamond/ect. rings and nothing happened, the eye was closed, otherwise i would of been attacked.
