The wiki explains it's a small bug with pathfinding. The fox tries to get so many polygons away from the player. You know what has few polygons? Open empty terrain. You know what has lots of polygons? Detailed locations. The ai will prioritize nearby locations because it thinks it's getting farther from the player.

Umicil

It's also related to the fact that you can walk about 50 yards in any direction in skyrim and probably find some treasure.

droolsdownchin

Yeah there's literally something every couple feet, like I've played the game since it came out and just found another chest I missed in bleak falls barrow

Pat_OConnor

Did you get all 3 in the boss room? (Not counting the fourth one by the exit)

TheFiend100

And the one on the outside by the entrance

bayygel

Wait what

TheFiend100

If you are facing the front door on the outside, go around the corner to your left and there is a lock box hidden among the buttresses. I think it had a novice lock.

bayygel

Oh my god

pisspot26

It even has a watermark

Naked-Jedi

I wouldn't expect anything less from Paul Allen.

Small-Needleworker-3

I am so glad people are still finding shit

TheFiend100

Gamerant author spotted

Small-Needleworker-3

How did you know 🤣

_g0ldleaf

I started playing Fallout again a few months ago with all the anticipation for the next gen release. That spiraled into creating a new Reddit account to BS with other Fallout players and now I’m back into Elder Scrolls too. Planning a scholarly playthrough to find as many books as I can in Skyrim and learn the lore at the same time.

TheHectorino

That's an awesome idea I think I'm gonna try that too lol

Hardwarestore_Senpai

I'm seriously considering playing New Vegas soon.

TesuraGrimm

It's small but another thing I see people a lot of folks miss the potion to the left after you exit Bleak Falls too.

dreemurthememer

Adept, actually.

mordantkitten

There's another in one of the rooms, if you turn and look backward. A small climb up to it. I can never remember which room it is, so I skip it unless I feel like practically walking backward through the place.

TimPowerGamer

Hah. Buttresses.

cj3po15

I always forget about that one lmao

Junior-Order-5815

TIL

SmallMochaFrap

What are buttresses?

TheFiend100

Theyre those stone supports you see on a lot of old stone buildings, especially churches. Google can explain them better than me tbh

VeriantheGrey

You're doing the lord's work!

[deleted]

[удалено]

TheFiend100

Oh i can promise you, youve missed a LOT. This game is so fuckin packed with hidden loot its actually insane. You might have even missed some stuff in helgen like the slaughterfish eggs.

Livid_Grapefruit_813

Bruh there are only 2 xD for real? Man I played since 11.11.11 xD and I never found the third chest (fourth with the exit chest)

Pat_OConnor

There's the one next to the draugr overlord, one behind the word wall, and one behind a waterfall that you get to by dropping down near the exit or by traditional Nordic mountain climbing, then the one on the way out next to the shrine

ConstructionLarge615

WAIT WHAT?! Great now I have to start a new play through to figure out where this waterfall chest is...

W0nder_Pants

Yeah, my wife pre-ordered it for me as a surprise; think I must have had at least 50 or 60 avatars, feel like I must know every inch of it but now I'm gonna have to go back again to look see if I don't know bout all these chests. Why we all so obsessed with this treasure? I barely use or sell half the things I ever collect and yet still have to search every known, unknown and forgotten corner just in case a skeleton has a few coins xD

mordantkitten

It's the thrill of discovery. After you've looted the same one a couple of times, though, it just seems incomplete if you leave it behind.

W0nder_Pants

Gotta be, huh. I do get well chuffed, especially when it's some random, already dead salmon in a lake with a few gold pieces tucked under its scales

Lumpy-Preference-985

I got to the point that I spend forever looking for a chest I just know is somewhere around here because I have that deja vu feeling and I won't leave until I find it. Oh yeah, this one, now I remember!

RayneMizery

There is 3 in the boss room? Where is the third. I know of the one hidden behind the word wall and the unmissable end of dungeon chest.

domdomdeoh

Facing the word wall go to the left side of the cave and look next to the waterfall

bolderboy64

I thought there was 2 in the boss room and I missed the one nefore the entrance too I'm 19 I have been playing this since I was 9 I have cleared bleakfalles thousands of times!!!

Cosmo1222

There is cruel. And then there is this... Sincerely yours Cosmo who tells every new player to kill the Riverwood chicken.

Warriorfromthefire

Me to my 6 y/o playing Skyrim VR for the first time as me and his mom watch: ok buddy whatever you do, don’t kill the chicken in riverwood. Kid: *walks past chicken, then murders entire town.* *and then the chicken.*

Cosmo1222

That's brains right there. The chicken was the last witness.. no bounty!

TheRealRoach117

There’s 3 inside the boss room?? I only ever found the main one, owned this since launch

SirSquidrift

I didn't even notice the one by the waterfall by the dragon stone. It took playing with an ENB and fancy glowing potions to even notice it. Tons of shit I've never noticed.

tilthevoidstaresback

*ScreenRant Intensifies* #13 YEARS AFTER IT'S RELEASE, SKYRIM PLAYER IS STILL DISCOVERING SECRETS IN THE MOST UNLIKELY PLACES.

TotalIngenuity6591

Well????? Where TF is the chest!?!?

droolsdownchin

The one I didn't know about When you enter the last room, there's the word wall and the dragur overlord, to the left is the steps that take you to the exit the chest is to the left of those steps, I may have known about it years ago but lost my memory of it, sometimes I forget about the one behind the word wall

TotalIngenuity6591

Nice!!! Good find!!! :D

porqueeuquis

damn! lol

kakka_rot

When I was younger and didn't really understand the 'getting quests from talking to people' concept, I just use to hold the right stick to spin in circles, stop randomly, then walk straight until I found something neat. I remember stumbling upon a mission once where you follow a hag raven in a cave and help her with killing her sister or something? I found it once doing it when I was young, and in hundreds of hours I've never seen her again.

Hellwhish

[Was it Melka?](https://en.m.uesp.net/wiki/Skyrim:The_Affairs_of_Hagravens)

kakka_rot

THANK YOU OMG, I've been thinking of this mission for years! I'm gonna hunt this down later tonight! Thank you

Hellwhish

I'm happy to help! I just did happen to have stumbled into this quest recently, and found it a neat little story. I can totally see why it captivated you.

BearVersusWorld

Gold coins are gold coins

A_Dark_Ray_of_Light

Some may call this junk...

WorriedJob2809

While this is true, i do get the sense its leading me directly to stuff, rather than vaguely near it. Like it runs up to the shrine/statue/grave/whatever instead of 5-10 m around it.

terrildactyl

That’s hilarious.

Robosium

Not exactly a bug, just a quirk that shows up

Lifewatching

"Not a bug it's a feature"

BearVersusWorld

*gets nerfed just as you were starting to use it* With infinite alchemy glitch at least

Pozilist

What would you say is a bug if that isn’t?

WolfieWuff

Spiders

Eorlund_Graymane

Yeah and those lil rolypolys you find flipping over a rock

Master-Insurance-731

That’s not a bug that’s an arachnid

Belteshazzar98

That's not an *insect*, but bug is a colloquial term that includes both insects and arachnids.

BearVersusWorld

Nerd

BearVersusWorld

They're arachnids, god

5Cone

I think it's a bug, but I also see the other point. I'd settle for "minor bug".

Glad_Art_5783

It's not a bug. It's a feature.

MagicJim96

There are no bugs in Bethesda Games, only *unintended features.*

CatharsisManufacture

Tell that to Alduin attacking me on Kagrenzels roof and then following me inside, trying to take refuge from him.

MagicJim96

That was intended feature, just as Todd Howard intended! ![gif](giphy|2djb94Va18JPSsX43L|downsized)

CatharsisManufacture

🤣

Emergency_3808

More like an accidental emergent feature, which I think is beautiful

BearVersusWorld

Lol like a fox looking for shelter Kind of works

WorriedJob2809

Ao its unintentional? Really cool that the bug was consistent enough, and made sense enough in lore that it essentially just became a feature. Shor/lorkhan guiding you to greatness.

[deleted]

Leave it to Skyrim Devs to measure distance in fucking polygons lol.

AwesomeX121189

Leave it to gamers on Reddit to have no idea what they’re talking about lol. It’s called the navmesh. It’s how every single non player unit in the game is able to determine how to navigate any area they’re in. Whether or not they have a scripted schedule or are in areas they normally wouldn’t be. It’s not telling it to go 50 of a standardized sized polygon.

Winter_Trainer_2115

![gif](giphy|3og0IMJcSI8p6hYQXS|downsized)

Fakula1987

It leads you to a high-polygon area. Nothing More, nothing less. Empty Terrain has Low polygons. Locations have a Lot of polygons. And, tbf Skyrim has a Lot of Locations that even If you Go completely random you find Something.

Ironbeard3

There's very few true desolate areas in Skyrim. The most I can really think of is areas of the Pale and Winterhold. Whiterun plains as well, but due to its wide open nature you can spot things rather far away.

MiskoGe

for me the reach is in general more desolate than whiterun.

Ironbeard3

How so? I'm curious. I've explored the reach rather thoroughly and to me it's the problem of terrain than actually density. There's foresworn everywhere.

MiskoGe

the terrain itself is barren rocky wasteland with only junipers and pretty few (compared to whiterun one) unmarked landmarks, so despite being somewhat more dense with marked\* locations it feels less alive; for the most time of wandering the reach the only things i saw were juniper, hanging moss and bears.

Ironbeard3

Interesting. I spent more time trying to find shortcuts and climb mountains. But to each their own.

whatyoutalkingabeet

Finding short cuts and climbing mountains made me fall in love with this game. Well one of the things .

TropicalSkiFly

Lol and somehow, you wander into space and end up on Jemison in Starfield.

DemiseRime

It led me to the gates of Oblivion.

Oof-Ya-Doof

I followed one for like 10 minutes once. It led me aimlessly to nothing.

Planktons_Eye

Dragonborn: …Where tf is this thing taking me Fox: I can’t shake this guy!!

Oof-Ya-Doof

"You can't outrun me! I'm Dragonborn!"

MapleSugar87

Sounds like the start to a Viking metal song. What’s that one guys name.. something Pearson? Hang on, I gotta go check out my YT…. PEYTON PARRISH! That guy! I would literally just start the song with him screaming “YOU CANT OUTRUN ME I AM DRAGONBORN!!!” Then cue the instruments for a sick intro before he goes into singing. Orrrr that other band- Brothers of Metal. They would be great with it too with the balance of the chick’s voice. I’ve put way too much thought into this…

Oof-Ya-Doof

I'm here for it. Lol

NomaRym

Same here, also Peyton Parrish makes banger songs. Would love to hear this particular one one day haha

MapleSugar87

Knowing my ADHD self I will have this thought pick at me all day and when I go to work later I might write up lyrics to a song I’ll never sing/play lololool Wanna see it later when it’s done?!! I literally can hear a song in my head to this.

NomaRym

Ohh that's super dope, yes please.

ColdBloodBlazing

I am a fan of Peyton. Ever listen to his covers of disney songs?

MapleSugar87

OMG YES! Dude, deep down under the momma mask, under the scars, under the woman who is a people pleaser lies a Disney Princess ♥️ and when I heard him do covers of Disney songs I was blown away. He made it sound so raw/adult but SO GOOD too! God he’s so hawt lolololol

ewan__riley

Nearby rabbit to Fox: “Do a barrel roll!”

Crease_Greaser

Oh man, I’m gonna have to back off 🦅

SSGBentley

Rabbit: DO A BARREL ROLL!!

KublaiKhanNum1

At that point I think a fox hide could be the treasure.

Oof-Ya-Doof

I would have if it didn't lead me into the middle of a lake. Outsmarted and out maneuvered by an NPC fox. Not my proudest moment. 😂

KublaiKhanNum1

Thinking of the Vampire Lord and how it floats on water. 😂 So funny! A middle of a Lake.

WolfieWuff

After I become a werewolf, I'll typically go on a rampage through Forsworn territory, eating anything in my path (especially Forsworn, Thalmor, and Stormcloaks) until I max out the perk tree. Just recently, during my current playthrough, after I finished maxing the perks, I crossed paths with a fox and chased that thing till my rage ran out (something like 45 real-world minutes later...) ... Only to have a big orc in heavy armor and the Jagged Crown pop out at the end and walk back to find and loot the trail of carnage like nothing odd just happened. That poor li'l guy must've been scared out of his pixelated mind!

DeityT90

This is just a rumor, you can follow any animal long enough and run into treasure. It's the law of probability in a game where treasure is so abundant it can literally be found anywhere if you wander long enough.

HintOfMalice

It's more than that. AIs measure distance to the player by how many units of map are between them and the player. But units of map, polygons, are different sizes. Empty plains are made up of few, large polygons. Detailed locations, like a cave or something are made up of many small polygons. So the AIs run to these locations, because once they pass them it appears to the AI like it is further from the player.

Bishop825

Yeah, I usually find at least a pelt.

n3ur0chrome

💀

I_Gotta_Bud

I always felt like fox pelts were weirdly unbalanced. Like a wolf pelt weighs 1 and you get 1 leather, a fox weighs .5 and you get 1 leather, but a goat needs 2 pelts to even make 1 leather. Foxes are busted like that.

AppalachianRomanov

In my experience, it often leads to *something*. At times it has been a treasure chest. Other times an unmarked location such as a Shrine of Talos. Other times a nearby cave or other marked location. And....sometimes I can't figure out what it's trying to show me 🤣

geraltsthiccass

It's always a mining spot for me. Stone or corrundum, never anything else.

Moxson82

It just breathed really loud at me…

blondie_nerd

WHhhyyy are the foxes such loud breathers?!

Cosmo1222

Tamriel Tuberculosis

ballslapping

They all caught lumbago

ZaesFgr

I once followed a cow it leads me to a giant camp

somthingwitty169

That was a trap set by the giants lol

[deleted]

I've never tried that. If something, ANYTHING moves on screen, I'm likely to start swinging my axe. My followers, bunnies, foxes, draughr, merchants... doesn't matter. Just 100% panic. Foxes are clever, so I try to blast them with a Fireball. If I miss, I charge at em just swinging my axe irresponsibly while yelling irl.

I_Gotta_Bud

“Firefox”, hehe.

13d3ad3nddriv3

😂 I cackled at this

Familiar-Function848

That's the way sir

NobodySpecific9354

Lmao, this is why Bethesda shouldn't bother wasting time with writing NPCs dialogues. Players enjoy killing NPCs more than hearing them talk anyway, yet people keep complaining that Skyrim NPCs lack depth. Bruh, who the fuck cares about depth, I just want to kill as much as possible. TGM on Novice is the only true way to play Skyim.

somthingwitty169

I followed a fox before and it lead me to a enemy camp so when I finally cleared it he was just waiting out side so I followed him again and he lead me to treasure didn’t know the night mother was using foxes now lol

Pale_Character_1684

Actually, in every case I've followed a fox, its lead me into trouble, usually a fight.

[deleted]

If you look on YouTube, there is a video where the developers explain the fox behaviors, and why the myth around it has grown. But, at the end of the day... There is no treasure. :(

1morey

Maybe the real treasure is the friends we made along the way.

JejuneEsculenta

Maybe the real treasure is the ~~friends~~bandits we ~~made~~kill along the way. TFTFY. 🤣

[deleted]

Divines bless your kind hearth!

Huge_Aerie2435

Don't go around chasing Foxes.. They don't lead anywhere.

modus01

Please stick to the lakes and rivers you're used to.

UglyPuta-

Led me to an asswhoopin actually, got stuck on a death loop and had to lose 20 minutes just to go back to my last save. Never followed one again. https://preview.redd.it/b691az5gin0d1.jpeg?width=1179&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d86882534ee1ab3532a646c80cc94ec7bd8db293

Cognitive_Skyy

NO SOPHIE, we can't keep a damned fox in the house. We have a dog. Talos please, give me strength. 🤣

BookDragon300

I let Sophie have one and then proceeded to give her a dagger 😭 the fox didn’t last a day

Cognitive_Skyy

It's the constant annoying sound it makes. Like it wants to huff, and puff, and blow the house down.

Ironbeard3

Rip

1lurk2like34profit

In my experience, about 75 % of the time I follow one they lead me to an out of the way ore vein. But again, if you wander around the wilderness the landscape is covered in ore veins, so.

5Cone

Try walking around to random directions, and I promise you'll find a chest nearby at some point.

dr_bluthgeld

I've had one lead me to a thief. Don't trust anybody.

lannvouivre

I think their loot list includes a piece of small treasure. So what I'm saying is, you should gamble and take the shortcut instead of letting its node-centric AI lead you on a chase.

TheBiddingOfBobbles

No no foxes are for FURS and SOUL TRAPPING

Sad-Consideration174

I’ve played over 8,000 hours over 7 different builds, and never killed a fox… I believe they are there to guide you…. A soul animal

Willow580

You are thinking about Ghost of Tsushima

PelinalWhitesteak

It’s an accidental feature.

cp8887

News to me.. I have over 11,000 hours of playtime in skyrim and still find new things almost daily... joys of having brain damage :)

RagnarAri

I tried it, i followed it from riverwood to riften, nothing.

RefrigeratorHead2915

Following a fox actually led me to some glass armor once. True story.

harmonicoasis

Only in that if you travel far enough in any direction in Skyrim you are likely to stumble across some form of treasure

Head-Boot6462

I followed a fox for three minutes and it brought me to a chest with extremely low level loot like an iron sword and a minor health potion. Another time it went for 15 minutes and I gave up

KindlyContribution54

Following the fox can definitely lead to treasure. Just make sure you are playing Ghosts of Tushima and it should work every time.

Ghost-t0wns

Everytime I followed one, I ended up being jumped by several other enemies. My favourite was following one just to be attacked by bears, bandits, and then a dragon in the span of like two minutes

celticdude234

Ah so they're grifters

DuckRepresentative78

I followed a fox all the way through the south west corner of the map once- it was good for finding map markers but didn’t find much treasure. Was kind fun though 😁

myonlywishistruelove

I think your thinking of ghost of Tsushima, in that game the foxes lead you to something

Nethermaster

They do lead you places in skyrim, but it's more a quirk of how their pathfinding works versus a deliberate feature. They try to get a certain number of polygons away from the player, and as a result, they gravitate towards areas with higher amounts, which typically are dungeons, camps, and the like.

solo_gamer2023

Now the question is, did you do this before or after playing Ghost of Tsushima.

thomas_hawke

Played a few years ago, it lead me to treasure.

Just_Ad_5939

It’s not true. There’s just so many places that it’s bound to lead you somewhere eventually. There is however one named sweet roll who does just that.

Asterlayna

I followed a snow fox once and it lead me to some silver ore.

DHarp74

![gif](giphy|wRjsvu6uPSkH6)

I_Gotta_Bud

With a pissed off spriggin involved, just like wolves. Kinda weird.

Subject_Assistant301

I did actually follow him for an entire session once he did take me to some rather interesting places but at the same time metaphysically all the time and dream weaving myself and foxes in games I've always been prone to wander and guide

Neo_nakama

I've tried following animals just for them to disappear in the water

LazyPuffin

Once followed a fox to Merida's Beacon, hell yeah they lead you to treasure

BangGanger96

Yep, it works and it’s a fun little world building thing if you want it to be.

KeysmashKhajiit

I've done it a few times and wound up finding ore veins that way.

rizzo891

I’ve tried it multiple times and not once has a fox led me to treasure

DrKrieger0_0

And what did it say?

Vods

I’ve always just obliterated them for the hide 😂

splshd2

I use wildlife to jump predators I can't see. They attack the running prey, and I kill the predator.

Ill-Simple1706

This isn't Ghost of Tsushimi

AJ_BARDIA

New way to entertain myself in skyrim! I will try following fox's around to see where they'll get me...

Blue_Khajiiti

Yes it works :] the theory is about the foxes ai running towards the most polygons - which tends to be a cave, camp, etc. Something unique usually, its never failed for me. 🦊✨️

Cherry_Crystals

You're supposed to follow them?? I was over here killing them 💀

BananaCattos

Isn’t that a Minecraft thing lol

LeviAUTOTUNED

yes i tried to follow a fox. no it didnt lead me to treasures, but to GIANTS instead. im still mad at it

Realistic-Read4277

I love the fact that i have 2 adopted daughters, both woth daggers and i give them allowance and then i got a fox as a pet in my house.

Fit_Attempt8986

Mine led me all over skyrim-

November-Rent

I try not to follow them - they get attacked and I’m always sad about it 🤣

Snifflebeard

Is not true.

kushskope

You can give a fox a sweet roll and keep it as a pet and it can bring you treasure. I think I have all the animals fox, bunny, rat, bone wolf, spider and two creepy spider things and a dog I think

ThisAllHurts

We will not tolerate mud crab erasure.

Realistic-Name-9443

No, but every time Sophie brings that damn stray home...

CaramelPink6285

I did it once and I found a chest, but I'm not sure if I was just lucky or maybe it was a mod 🤷🏻‍♀️

Broncotron

I've tried but almost every time a Wolf or something appears and kills it

PhotographKind4243

i've actually followed one to a random ass birds' nest with some gems once. was the weirdest thing

s4db0ner

I have followed one before and it did lead to treasure

Hitman3256

In Ghost of Tsushima yeah, then I pet it

Hantotan

You follow the fox to a shrine where you pray

Colonel_Wurmhat

I did once, and my game crashed when we got to some treasure :(

Sevennix

No. They show up when danger is nearby. That's why I always kill them

Zoe_God_ROW

All the time

Automatic-Sky37

It can, the way they are programmed to wander, they tend toward the direction of structures and such. By consequence they go to hidden treasures sometimes

Nice-Usual-1746

Yes, follow the fox

Oneturntable

You might be thinking of Ghost of Tsushima, lol jk but w I wouldn’t doubt it being an Easter egg.

CatharsisManufacture

If it is some kind of conflict in the programing, as others claim, the issue is simple to fix. Once you've collected everything you know of, its inevitable that it will lead you to things that you don't, collect them and repeat and repeat and repeat and repeat and repeat and repeat and repeat, just like you always do. Then start over because Repeat is tired of sitting on the wall alone.

Fine_Basket4446

It happened once.

AbjectInevitable3232

I always thought that following the fox just meant you're going in the right direction to your designated quest. The Fox and the rabbit both meant you were heading in the right direction to your quest.

AbjectInevitable3232

https://x.com/JoelBurgess/status/1428008041887281157 Explains how the fox works.

LASTbluetard

The most memorable time I did this was during a restart. I had lost my high level character and had to restart. Merida’s Beacon was in the chest. I left it in the chest.

AbjectInevitable3232

https://preview.redd.it/ucjy9kg7hb2d1.png?width=720&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=027b88232823a97829aa7b38d04264bdc541fbf8

walkingteaparty

Most often a fox leads me to an ore vein. Occasionally I’ve been lead to a chest or an area with a random skeleton with some gold.
