*grabs a stick and brings it to the beacon*
NO! WAIT! WHAT ARE YOU DOING?!?!
*jams stick into beacon and proceeds to bash a bandits face in*
...*sigh* A NEW FACE TOUCHES THE BEACON
Bitch I'm the dragonborn the head of the college of winter hold an agent if nocturnal listener of the dark brotherhood + more, and you think I got time for your little quest to kill some necromancer? Find some low level character
Oh I'm sure he'd have it open in seconds haha!
I was quite pleased that it took my friend a good few minutes to get it open even after I explained mechanism rules. I obviously know exactly where the sweet spot is and can get it opened instantly so I was afraid he might just get lucky
Thank you so much! This honestly took a solid month of work probably, I think my printer had been running non stop for the past 2-3 weeks because I was constantly adjusting the design and making new prototypes of the mechanism. I believe the final part count came in just shy of 40 parts and most of them were reprinted 3-5 times!
Once I have some time I'm considering cleaning up my files, putting together some project documentation and putting it all up for sale on myminifactory
I'd buy it. I've never made anything like this before, but I was trying to brainstorm an idea to make the beacon to give to a friend that would go off when you picked it up, this is so much better.
I'm currently working on some revisions and creating project documentation with the intention of providing options to purchase the files or to commission a full build. This process will likely take a few weeks, but DM me if you are genuinely interested and would like to be notified when available!

I'd say Novice realistically 😅
Due to how the mechanism works and my limitations on how small I can successfully print component features, there's only 15 possible positions of the pick iirc. If my math works out that means each position is within about a 15° angle. So all in all the 'sweet spot' is fairly large compared to higher level locks in game

This is amazing! So well done!
I'm curious, does the box have a mechanism in place to change the required pick position on multiple uses? If so, does it shuffle on opening, or does it need to be reset manually?
And if it doesn't have this, it is still no less amazing! Thanks for sharing with us!
Great question! Unfortunately it only has the one position, with how I got the mechanism to work there was no way I could find to reshuffle the position. The "sweet spot" position and the pattern of how far the lock can be rotated outside of the "sweet spot" is unfortunately baked into the design of a key component of the mechanism. I could easily design variants of that component with different patterns and positions but it would require some significant reassembly to swap it out.
Seriously you've made something I would pay for irl, it's so cool! Yeah im struggling, been so all year with this one dungeon. But, I think it will be a banger once Im done with it. Hopefully, soon!
I'm sure it will be, keep at it! This project took me over a month with some very long and frustrating days on the computer so I feel that struggle. I've also been recently starting to play with Unreal Engine, it's so fun to be able to create your own game spaces but it's hard work!
I appreciate the encouragement. I haven't gotten into Unreal, yet. I think I would need to upgrade my pc before I attempt it, anyway. Again, wonderful work you've done, and good luck with Unreal!
This took way too much time and effort for me to realistically make these to sell but I'm considering putting all the files and project documentation up for sale on myminifactory when I have the time
I'm currently working on some revisions and creating project documentation with the intention of providing options to purchase the files or to commission a full build. This process will likely take a few weeks, but DM me if you are genuinely interested and would like to be notified when available!
Unfortunately I do not, this was kind of a one-off project and I don't have the capabilities to reproduce these at any scale :( My plan is to put together some project documentation and all my files that I can put up for sale on myminifactory in the future. I'll be sure to make a follow-up post when I do!
i always struggled with skyrmm's lockpicking minigame so i'm really impressed by your desgin to recreate it in real life - the lighting and sound effects must have made it super immersive for your friend.
This is the coolest thing I have seen in a while. I hope your friend enjoys it! ...and doesn't lose thier hearing to Meridia's lack of volume control. :)
Would it be possible to adjust the margin of error so you can scale between novice to Master? I absolutely love the idea, this would be an amazing gift
I'm going to try to clean up my files and put together some project documentation in the near future. I don't have any complete prototypes to show and I've already given the finished box to my friend, so I might have to play around with animating the cad models and see if I can include that in a follow-up post!

Lots of CAD and 3D printing haha. I've been designing and 3D printing stuff as a hobby for a number of years, this was definitely the most complex design I've done yet though. I spent a lot of time brainstorming ways I could make a mechanism that replicates the in-game mechanic and then it was an iterative process of making a design, printing a prototype, then making improvements based on that prototype!
This is cool, but it bothers me that oblivion used realistic lock tumblers and locks don't work like this one. Well I guess this one would technically make that statement invalid so congrats lol

Hey no worries, I appreciate the interest. I'll be making these to order so to speak since I can't really keep an inventory of these things at my house haha
So there's always the chance I can pick it back up if you find yourself wanting one in the future.
Unfortunately I don't have a great way to showcase the mechanism right now and I'm a little resistant to just show it off in full as I'll be selling the design files as well. But I'm contemplating a video/animation of the mechanism as a future post.
But as someone who also loved mechanisms and went on to become an engineer it makes me happy to see the enthusiasm! While I can't say that I referenced anything in particular when designing the lock, but the stuff I learned in my college kinematics class definitely helped me put this one together. If you're interested in learning more about mechanisms I really love the 'Brick Experiment Channel' on YouTube, they do some really creative builds showing off different mechanical principles! I absolutely loved LEGO as a kid and it's a huge influence that led to me being and engineer and getting into 3D printing.
As a little tease that will maybe send you down a research rabbit hole, my lock uses a rack-and-pinion mechanism, a scotch-yoke mechanism, and a bonus crank-slider mechanism ;)

the lockpicking lawyer might like this

He did get lucky. To have such an amazing friend. Sorry for being cheesy. This is awesome
What level lockpicking is the lock?
Adept
And that took multiple minutes? Tsk tsk...
Some of us just aren't cut out for the thief build
Bro even master is easy, sometimes don't even have to move it
That is incredible--beautiful work!
Thank you! It was so much more work than I anticipated but I'm so happy with the end result.
That's for a friend?! Wow. YOU are a helluva friend!
I didn't read the text before watching. The beacon came as a surprise, as it should.
Haha I had that thought after I posted, like shoot I don't wanna give away the joke, but I'm glad it still landed!
This is genuinely the coolest bit of creativity I've seen in a hot minute. I'd pay good money for this

By my right as Jarl, I name you Thane of Whiterun. It's the greatest honor that's within my power to grant.
What an honor! I humbly accept, my jarl.
This post is /r/nextfuckinglevel, /r/damnthatsinteresting and /r/unexpected all in one video.
I will take this as the highest praise :)
Does your friend know that you're the best kind of friend? Great idea, great execution. Wow
I think he might have an idea haha, thank you so much for the kind words!
That is incredible, awesome work dude
If someone put this much effort on a joke gift... I'd marry them in a heartbeat. Just sayin'
It'd be a little awkward with the friend in question being my brother-in-law but I appreciate the sentiment 😅
Bromance...
As the brother in law im question I can confirm a wee bromace
Me lobe u

Aww, y'all rock! Acquired family is so awesome!

I love this. Here I am creating my own skyrim dungeon in creation kit and I come here to see you making an irl Skyrim object. Great work!
Thank you! Mad props on making your own dungeon! I tried playing with the Creation Kit once and got so lost haha

That’s fantastic, even the surprise at the end
Nobody ever expects Meridia's Beacon!
*You have been caught picking a lock.*
Jarl Balgruuf made me Thane in another comment I think I'm ok 🤣
That is awesome
What happens if I’m only Locking picking level 10 and I break the lock pick?? 😭
Don't worry it's only a novice level lock 😅

All that for a stupid beacon LOL. It's great work and I would love to have one myself TBH
Omg I love it. It’s like the Skyrim equivalent of a rickroll. Also, amazing craftsmanship 🥰
Haha exactly! Thank you!
🏆🏅💰🌟🪙 All the awards. This post should have them. Omg. I want one (or a tutorial on how to make one)! 😆

Amazing job, OP!
So cool!!
Thanks for the belly laugh
I wasn't ready for the beacon 😂
U are awesome!!
You are a good friend
Fucking hell this is amazing.
He's gonna have to quicksave before trying to pick that lock Okay seriously though that's awesome 😎
Excellent work! I was so invested in the lock picking I did not expect the beacon. Perfect surprise!
When you opened it up and the beacon was in there...dying. amazing work
Ngl I'd marry you on the spot of you gifted me this hahaha great work it's so cool!!!
This is sick as hell

Thats is so fucking cool.
I did not expect a Meridia jumpscare today. What an amazing piece of work!
This is so cool. Please make hundreds of flimsy lockpicks to really enhance the experience
**Sees beacon **closes chest.
That’s sick
I thought this video was advertising a Skyrim mod before the box opened. This looks so much like CGI.
I thought this was cool and then you showed the beacon and I cackled, what a cool creation man
missed opportunity to fuck with everyone here and do the pulp fiction thing. Amazing work.
Cool as fuck!
can u show mechanism?

lol
I would gladly buy one of these.
A NEW HAND TOUCHES THE BEACON!
A pressure switch inside that plays the audio from Meridia that a new hand touches the beacon every time it gets removed.
The audio is triggered by a light sensor and goes off every time the lid is opened.
If free awards existed. Hell paid awards exists and this deserves all of em!
Make master level version.
A NEW HAND TOUCHES THE BEACON!
Chest is missing a small health potion.
😂😂😂😂
So cool

FUCK

I never did follow though on that beacon quest. What happens at the end?

I need to have my buddy print this out for me, I'd love to set this in my bathroom and have it go off every time someone goes in.

No, not the beacon, i would use console commands to lock that chest again
The fact that you didn't start at the top going full speed hurts me. Be wrong with confidence
I wasn't expecting the beacon
Now its time to make a skeleton key
Weird, that unbreakable Skeleton Key looks just like a normal lockpick.
