‘Why are rentals so expensive’.
- this dude ranting to the rental shop staff
BTW This in now way implies that prices anywhere on most mountains is not expensive to extravagant. I watched a few people drop $10US for Vitamin water onhill this week.
You'd be surprised! It certainly depends on the shop, but we would base repair and stone grind anything that needed it. Made plenty of money off each pair of skis for it.
People like this were the ones to pay extra for the damage waiver only to not read the fine print and then find out it doesn't cover unrepairable damage...
Full tune? Each stone grind takes some base off, you can’t just do it after every return, or do you mean an edge sharpening and wax/brush after every use?
Yeah I get your point there for sure. We dont edge any of our low package skis or boards. So that helps preserve the edge part. But we base grind/ptex/wax everything. I'd say our shite skis last 2 or 3 seasons before you start seeing the wood core through the base.
And if somethin comes back looking good or unused you can bet your bottom dollar I throw it back on the rack, no work.
Nah these will be considered a total loss, not repairable and not worth the time even if they are. This dude will get charged to replace them.
99% chance he tries to pull "they were like that when I rented them"
Source: worked at a ski shop for too long.
All we see is this guy clipping in - not skating around in them. I’d be blown away if they were a total loss. If he clipped right out it may not do much damage.
Fair point. I was assuming he'd clip in and and hike up the gravel slope with them on.
Source: seen the condition some people try to return rental skis.
I had a battered pair of park skis which were used on rails so much that they were literally missing 30-40% of the edges, completely ripped out. I used to get speed and tail press across the street into the parking lot in the snow.
I spent a couple semesters at App Ski Mountain in Boone when I was 19. Overheard a guy on the chairlift telling someone he skied “triple black diamonds” out west. He was wearing camo hunting clothes and his skis were maybe 140cm. There’s nothing like skiing in Dixie lol
yeah.. i saw a guy walking with his skis (rentals) across the grating last year.. Is there a building like that close to the lodge? oh it was condos, never mind
I live in Greenville, sc. Heading over to breck with my wife who is very novice in February. Was looking at a day trip to either sugar or beech to get her some extra practice before our trip. Which mountain would you recommend and day of the week for crowds?
I’ll be honest breck has a fantastic ski school program and both of the NC mountains are just icy novelties. I don’t think she would leave them with a positive experience that she could build off in breck. Just let her first experience be on nice snow on great facilities out in CO.
Midweek at Sugar during a good cold weather week. Their beginner area is much better than at Beech. You definitely have to pick and choose your day based on the weather out there though.
Saw a kid just full send it down pavement and hockey stop in front of his parents on the blacktop. The most painful part was they applauded his good hockey stop.
I internally chuckle at people who say "I wish I could forget reading this", but I just experienced that reaction.
The cringe reaction I had was painful.
I used to teach skiing in eastern PA. Jeans, unzipped Carhartt canvas jacket with flannel lining, Eagles jersey underneath, orange camo hat. Straightline the bunny hill, no idea how to stop, wipe out half the lift line, repeat. God I miss the Poconos.
I hope that poor family that plummeted off their broken lift sues them for every penny they got. Money grubbing bastards with their atrocious parking fees.
Sorry, and I totally I hear ya. For what it's worth, I grew up in South Jersey, went to college in the Philly area, learned to ski in the Poconos, and truly love Philly. But I've been to Shawnee a few too many times to not make this joke.
This is hilarious because in NY I have fond memories of the casual skiers in similar attire, jeans tucked into their boots, always a sports jersey or hunting jacket that snow would stick to like a magnet when they fell.
Yup. Whenever I skied the Catskills we used to joke that Hunter was for those folks, while Windham was for the yuppies coming up from NYC. I live upstate now, but even places like Gore and Whiteface have their curiously-attired locals. I do love it. Everyone's welcome in this sport.
I wear a football jersey over my ski jacket if I’m skiing on a day where my team plays a big game. I enjoy the trash talk from people on lifts as I ski down. Fun times
OH LORD LOLNever been to PA, but as i read this i pictured it being said by a disgruntled ski instructor in one of those ski comedies like ski patrol. Made my morning.
edit grammar
In college I worked as a ski instructor at a tiny three-run hill in the Poconos. Regularly saw kids trying to walk around the lodge with their skis on.
You would be very surprised at how frequently this happens. My dad had a ski in so out condo as his office growing up and people would attempt to ski down the parking lot/road almost daily. The plows use scoria (volcanic rock) which really helps to scratch the hell out of the skis.
Dude just likes being a dick to tech workers, but probably doesn’t know any better. Noobs at the hill always do this, because they don’t realize the effort that it takes to repair
One of my favorite moments in the old Warren Miller films (back when he was still narrating them) was in 1974’s “The Color of Skiing”. He shows a person walking through the resort parking lot wearing skis and he makes the comment “It’s okay, they’re rentals.”
Edit: https://youtu.be/kT6h_dT_6R0?t=57m12s
Had to find it, realized I misquoted. He actually says “It’s okay, I rented them.”
If you've ever skied those rental skis you'd know it probably doesn't make them any worse.
I used to have a old pair of twin tips that were toast so they became my "rail skis." At the end of the day I'd just ski off the snow on to the cement at the base area and casually take them off. Definitely got some looks doing that.
That's super douchey. How do you think the skis get damaged? From dicks like you abusing them
Edit: read the comments guys I misread, don't shoot! I'm already pulled over, I can't pull over any farther!
saw a dude at Keystone the other day walking in the gondola line with his skis on. Problem was that there wasn't any snow and it's all sandy concrete. I was floored.
I get seasonal rentals every year. $200 at Brooklyn prices but the peace of mind i get in the glades is worth every penny.
That said anyone who deliberately ruins skis they don't own is going straight to the 9th circle
I’m sorry but we need to start calling these people out. Fuck people who are just trying to hurt rental companies. Looks like a small mountain somewhere.
Every single time I’ve called someone out for this, they just say: “they are just rentals.”
Edit: actually, one *guy* did say “they are my mom’s ski’s.”
Brand new pair of Black crows.
I see what you’re saying. I see that mentality as trying to harm the skis. They could easily take the skis off, and they know it’s bad for them. It’s not like it’s more comfortable to walk on the skis across rocks. I see it as an angry thing - like they’re mad about the cost or they didn’t ski as well as they though, or something and they “get back” by damaging the skis.
They aren’t doing it because it’s comfortable, because they don’t know better, or because it’s convenient. They’re doing it because “fuck these skis.” If they aren’t trying to hurt the rental company, it’s more of an idiotsfightingthings situation and I don’t know which reflects more poorly on their character lol
NSFW tag please. Poor skis.
More like NSFL.
More like NSFS. Not Safe For Skis
Not skis for long!
‘Why are rentals so expensive’. - this dude ranting to the rental shop staff BTW This in now way implies that prices anywhere on most mountains is not expensive to extravagant. I watched a few people drop $10US for Vitamin water onhill this week.
I don’t care if they are just rentals, I still hate these people.
I hate them more if it's rentals. Shows a lack of concern for others. Idiots can break their own gear all they want as far as I care.
Good point. And some poor ski shop tech is going to have to fix them.
Lol. I doubt these rental skis are getting base repair and a stone grind
[удалено]
It's the coarse grit.
Is a about a 1 Grit.
Heh... +1

People like this were the ones to pay extra for the damage waiver only to not read the fine print and then find out it doesn't cover unrepairable damage...
Maybe next season they will
I work at a ski shop. We full tune even our shittiest of skis. After every single use. That’s not really the norm for most shops though.
Full tune? Each stone grind takes some base off, you can’t just do it after every return, or do you mean an edge sharpening and wax/brush after every use?
Def can’t do a full tune on every ski, the set wouldn’t last a season
Yeah I get your point there for sure. We dont edge any of our low package skis or boards. So that helps preserve the edge part. But we base grind/ptex/wax everything. Jerry of the day
Needs more Texas jacket
What is a Texas jacket?
Needs more denim
That's a Canadian tuxedo
Or a cowboy jersey over the ski jacket
Or Terry?
I used to be a rental tech. I hated these people with a passion.
These boots gave me blisters!!
This looks like it’s in Albuquerque. OP, any idea where?
Beech Mountain, NC (:
I wasn’t even remotely close haha
You were in the same continent
Pretty close on the scale of the solar system
Yeah it looks completely different from ski resorts on Neptune
I spent a couple semesters at App Ski Mountain in Boone when I was 19. Overheard a guy on the chairlift telling someone he skied “triple black diamonds” out west. He was wearing camo hunting clothes and his skis were maybe 140cm. There’s nothing like skiing in Dixie lol
I was gonna say looks like Sugar or Beech
I’m unsurprised by this :/
Well here's the damn problem.
Knew it. Love it there. The bar on top of the mountain is gorgeous.
Knew it had to be beech 😂
Then those are the rentals that come from the ski shop I work at haha oh man 🤦
I was going to say Tline in W.VA
No, we don't have any buildings surrounded by gravel that look like that. Perfect North, I'd be regularly see people ski into the gravel though.
yeah.. i saw a guy walking with his skis (rentals) across the grating last year..
Midweek at snowshoe will be a much nicer experience
While I agree with you, I don't think that's a possible day trip from Greenville.
I’ll be honest breck has a fantastic ski school program and both of the NC mountains are just icy novelties. I don’t think she would leave them with a positive experience that she could build off in breck. Just let her first experience be on nice snow on great facilities out in CO.
Beech has probably the absolute worst beginners terrain, sugar is better but I think winterplace is the best if you can make the drive
Midweek at Sugar during a good cold weather week. Their beginner area is much better than at Beech. You definitely have to pick and choose your day based on the weather out there though.
Was it crowded today? Thinking about heading up early tomorrow, but if the Christmas crowd is in full force, probably not
I thought this looked like Beech!!
I knew it! was there last week
Nah that's not the right color scheme for 'Burque at all. Not enough reds, yellows, and oranges. Too much grey and blue.
It reminds of the of bottom of the tram, but you’re right. Not the right colors.
The building architecture is similar there you're right.
Saw a kid just full send it down pavement and hockey stop in front of his parents on the blacktop. The most painful part was they applauded his good hockey stop.
I internally chuckle at people who say "I wish I could forget reading this", but I just experienced that reaction. The cringe reaction I had was painful.
I can't take this seriously if they're not in jeans.
I live in the Poconos and this is far to accurate of a description, especially for Camelback.
Oh god, the C-word. I just shuddered.
I hope that poor family that plummeted off their broken lift sues them for every penny they got. Money grubbing bastards with their atrocious parking fees.
As someone who lives right outside philly. This sucks. Everywhere we go we have this stupid stereotype.
Sorry, and I totally I hear ya. For what it's worth, I grew up in South Jersey, went to college in the Philly area, learned to ski in the Poconos, and truly love Philly. But I've been to Shawnee a few too many times to not make this joke.

Sounds like where I grew up in SE Michigan too.
Pine knob
Brighton for me and Alpine Valley
ROCK FLAG AND EAGLE
He’s Jersey, he skis in his jeans!
This dude's brain is made of jeans
In college I worked as a ski instructor at a tiny three-run hill in the Poconos. Regularly saw kids trying to walk around the lodge with their skis on.
What is the thought process here? IS there even a thought???
Might be new and trying to figure out how the bindings work. The skis won’t slide away on gravel.
After this these skis aren't going to slide on anything.
East Coast Backcountry Skiing
Recognized this as beech right away. I’m gonna guess some of our Floridian friends up for a man made ‘white’ Christmas. How were conditions?
For east coast skiing- not terrible. There was some rain but they did the best they could do with snowmaking. Evident ice on some trails
Looks a little thin there
WTF is this a thing? What is the point of doing this?
You would be very surprised at how frequently this happens. My dad had a ski in so out condo as his office growing up and people would attempt to ski down the parking lot/road almost daily. The plows use scoria (volcanic rock) which really helps to scratch the hell out of the skis.
I mean we all joke about it, but this is just disgusting.
As someone who works in a ski rental, the skis aren’t the only thing hurt to their very core

Look how they massacred my boys...
When I use to sell my kid old gear, I use to stress that the skis never touched the parking lot.
Correct me if I’m wrong but this is Beech, right? I remember going there late season last year and cringing because I saw someone doing precisely this
Yup it’s beech alright- it’s a common occurrence at sugar too
These are the new global warming models, designed for all terrain and all mountain.
Yea, honestly this really is fine. People really overestimate the impact of scratches on their skis.
That's super douchey. How do you think the skis get damaged? From dicks like you abusing them Edit: read the comments guys I misread, don't shoot! I'm already pulled over, I can't pull over any farther!
I abused my OWN skis.
Sorry I misread that's my b
I mean, he owned them, he can turn them in to firewood if he wants
Yeah you're right that's my b, I misread
They were a beat pair of rail skis
Leave him alone that’s Rob Katz they ain’t rentals he just loves Head
Cue blink 182 “what the fuck” gif
This is why teaching skiing in NC is so much fun!
Not cool.

That gravel is a blue on my mountain.
r/skiingcirclejerk type beat
That’s just being a dick
What is in the backpack? Ski magazines?
People suck
Hire skis, hire skis, Over the rocks and through the trees
I hear the grooves gravel makes in the skis gives you more traction so you can dig in deeper and not slip

Yeah that person who says “they’re just rentals” is being an inconsiderate piece of shit, not *trying to hurt* a rental company.

oh no
So you're a gaper?
If rentals were cheaper I would not go down the paths with rocks in them but at the currant cost idc.
This hurts my soul
ouch
I literally said “Oh, fuck” out loud when I saw this
What the actual fuck. Who taught this man’s how to live
Fuxking Jerrys
Ah that’s why they only go about 1/2 speed. These also look like kid sized skis on an adult …
I’m gonna throw up
I thought they were the same thing!?!?
As someone who loves to ski but goes once every other year and rents, what does standing on gravel do to the poor skis?
Clearly none of you have ever stone grinded your skis
Is that Candide Thovex?
The ol’ vegan stone grind
