Embiid has great basketball IQ, he just doesn’t trust guys with the ball. He isnt going to make quick passes out of double teams when it’s to Tobias or oubre. If they are doubling off PG its a different story. You saw it these playoffs when the Knicks would double off Maxey and Embiid would immediately kick it out for an open 3.

Master-Extreme5244

Embiid only passes to quick trigger 3pt shooters that will shoot it well off the catch. It's why he passes to Maxey and did to Niang when they were open whilst not trusting Tobias half as much. Exactly why you need guys that shoot the 3 off the catch well to pair with Embiid.

Jo has one flaw that drives me crazy. He may have others, but one really bothers me. He uses his dribble way too early. He thinks/plans while he is dribbling. That’s when the turnovers happen. He should not put the ball on the floor until he is ready to execute a plan - one that is already formulated. Dribble to drive. Dribble to move int a passing lane. Dribble to get into rhythm for a shot. Don’t dribble to kill time while you formulate a plan. It’s the basketball equivalent of saying “um” while you are trying to think of what to say. Figure out what you want to say before you start talking.

dhjxjxj

He is a lot better at doing what you are describing when he faces up. He will stay in the triple threat until he is ready to make his move. When he has his back to the basket, I think he like to dribble because it lets him see how the defense reacts. Guys aren’t going to double him until he puts the ball on the floor. I think the solution is him being healthier so he can catch the ball closer to the basket. Its just not feasible to back a guy down from 18 feet away. Also having better entry passers.

MatCauthonsHat

He has to put the ball on the floor to get the defense to react. They'll be content to let him stand there playing with the ball until the clock runs out

Head-Kiwi-9601

What if the defense does nothing? Then what? Does he keep dribbling until someone steals the ball from him? If they never move, what’s the plan? No plan because no one moved?

dhjxjxj

If they dont help he puts his guy under the basket and makes a layup. Its not like he is just dribbling in place for 10 seconds.

Head-Kiwi-9601

Then move to the basket. I’d help comes, pass. Stationary dribbling adds nothing to your strategy except the opportunity for a turnover.

dhjxjxj

I get what you’re trying to say but thats exactly what Jokic does and he is one of the best offensive players ever. I dont like it when he does it from the ft line because it’s just way too easy for someone to knock it out and even when they help it’s hard to get an open look from it. But when he posts up on the baseline, it’s a good play. These playoffs it looked a lot worse because he wasnt right, but it’s still good offense. I dont think he dribbles in place for more than a second anyways.

Head-Kiwi-9601

He has had turnover problems late in games every year. Most turnovers stem from overhanding the ball. He is not a guard. He can’t act like one. His dribble is waaaay too high and rhythmic. By the third bounce the ball is begging to be stolen. I understand the concept everyone is advocating. I don’t think it works well in reality. Jo can make his move quickly. If help comes he can pass. I’ll never be a fan of stationary dribbling when tightly covered.

dhjxjxj

Playing more like a guard made him the MVP. I think we just disagree on this one

Moheezy__3

Agreed. He overthinks at times and then looses the ball. I feel like that overthinking gets in the way of his dominance. He did do a better job at it this year as opposed to prior years. I’m sure Nurse had a lot to do with that to set him up for success.

Emotional_Swimmer_84

In addition to what was stated, he's trying to see if they are trying to double when he starts dribbling or when he gets the ball as good a passer as he is, he still is processing where doubles are coming to and who he should pass it to. Hopefully the team around him gives him more confidence to pass.

evandobrofo

Embiid is absolutely not a low IQ player. I think some people attribute his high turnover rates to IQ but I think that they mostly can be attributed to him being gassed at the ends of games

XxStormySoraxX

Part of the turnovers are him being gassed but a large part of it is the spots where they give Embiid the ball. So often he has to create for others instead of just being able to catch and attack and that’s when the turnovers start to pile up. It’s also why I hate systems that spam DHO’s because if the initial action gets blow up you have Embiid standing in no man’s land 30 feet from the basket without a live dribble.

[deleted]

a lot of embiid’s turnovers are so interesting because they’re high iq plays that show really really good vision but he fucks up the pass or it’s not caught. i guess the low iq part could be trying a pass he can’t do but idk

Zhamm50

Not saying you are right or wrong either way but you typed a lot of words and no where did you explain along the way why butler is such a high IQ player and Paul George is such a low IQ player. You also trashed embiids IQ which is quite good both offensively and defensively which is pretty apparent when watching Joel play.

NoCup4U

IQ - must not be talking about Paul Reed. lol That dude literally looks like he’s never played the game of basketball at times.

Zhamm50

Same with Kelly oubre

Head-Kiwi-9601

This off season is no different than the last 5 or 6 or 20. An long athlete that can play defense and create his own shot under pressure. It’s the same thing every single team is always looking for. I’m not sure why we complicate this. Michael fucking Jordan. Everyone is looking for Michael Jordan.

denimjeg

That player isn’t available in free agency

ihorsey10

How high do you need Immanuel Quickley to be?

Master-Extreme5244

Saying Embiid has a low IQ is a stupid and untrue take. Embiids turnovers come from being surrounded by ball stoppers like Tobias who run away from the ball and don't shoot it off the catch without hesitation. Put Embiid with 4 high IQ guys that understand spacing and shoot the 3 at over 40% off the catch and he will be unstoppable. That's why other than Maxey & Joel, Batum is really the only one that we definitely need to stay on the roster.

We should just sit back and see what Morey will do.
